Summary The rainfall patterns and regions of the monsoonal island of Sri Lanka have been investigated. On the basis of quality-controlled monthly rainfall data from 110 gauges for the period 1931–60, three major homogeneous rainfall regions were derived based on a variety of rainfall parameters using cluster and discriminant analysis. For each of these regions, identified as the South-west Monsoon (SWM), the Northeast Monsoon (NEM) and the Inter-monsoon II (IMII) regions, multiple regression methods were used to determine the geographical factors influencing the spatial patterns of rainfall. For the NEM and IMII regions, the level of explanation as indicated by the coefficients of multiple determination were reasonable with values generally above 0.60. For the SWM region, the level of explanation was much lower at about 0.20. Examination of the residuals of the regression equations demonstrated the significance of local factors in influencing the patterns of rainfall distribution in Sri Lanka.With 6 Figures 相似文献

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is investigated in samples of Peralimala (PM) pluton (ca. 550 Ma) and adjacent
gneiss, gabbro, mylonite and amphibolite from the Moyar Shear Zone (MSZ), Southern Granulite Terrane (SGT) with an aim to
decipher the time-relationship between fabric development in the pluton and regional tectonics. Magnetic foliation recorded
in the PM pluton is sub-parallel to the WNW-ESE striking MSZ. Magnetic foliation and lineation trajectories are sigmoidal
and curve into the shear zone. A dextral sense of shear is deciphered from the trajectories, which is similar to that reported
within the MSZ in some earlier studies. It is inferred that the PM pluton has developed post-emplacement deformation-fabric
related to reactivation of the MSZ during Pan-African age. Based on the data and existing information about regional tectonics
of the area, the possibility of the (a) PM pluton being a Deformed Alkali Rock and Carbonatite (DARC) and (b) MSZ marking

Thirty borehole temperature–depth profiles in the central and southern Urals, Russia were scrutinized for evidence of ground surface temperature histories. We explored two inversion schemes: a simple ramp inversion in which solutions are parameterized in terms of an onset time and magnitude of change and a more sophisticated functional space inverse algorithm in which the functional form of the solution is left unspecified. To enhance and potentially identify latitudinal differences in the ground surface temperature signal, we subdivided the data into three groups based on geographic proximity and simultaneously inverted the borehole temperature–depth logs. The simultaneous inversions highlighted 13 temperature–depth logs that could not both fit a common ground surface temperature history and a priori models within reasonable bounds. Our results confirm that this is an effective way to reduce site-specific noise from an ensemble of boreholes. Each inversion scheme gives comparable results indicating locally variable warming on the order of 1°C starting between 1800 and 1900 AD. Similarly surface air temperature records from 12 nearby meteorological stations exhibit locally variable warming also on the order of 1°C of warming during the 20th century. To explore the degree to which borehole temperatures and surface air temperature (SAT) time series are responding to the same signal, we average the SAT data into the same three groups and used these averages as a forcing function at the Earth's surface to generate synthetic transient temperature profiles. Root mean square (RMS) misfits between these synthetic temperature profiles and averaged temperature–depth profiles are low, suggesting that first-order curvature in borehole temperatures and variations in SAT records are correlated. 相似文献

Mineral assemblages in the blueschist-facies metapelites fromthe Ile de Groix (Armorican Massif, France) permit the distinctionof two main units. The Upper Unit is characterized by: (1) highmodal proportions of garnet; (2) larger grain size; (3) therarity of graphite-bearing layers; (4) a single, although composite,foliation S1. A Lower Unit is defined by: (1) low modal proportionsof garnet; (2) smaller grain size; (3) an abundance of graphite-bearinglayers; (4) a pervasive crenulation cleavage S2. In the UpperUnit, coexisting garnet and chloritoid are more magnesian andless manganiferous than in the Lower Unit. The differences inmodal proportions and chemistry of coexisting minerals reflectdifferent PT conditions. The PT history of theblueschist-facies metapelites is estimated using a simplifiedpetrogenetic grid in the NFMASH system and thermodynamic calculations,which suggest peak PT conditions at about P = 1618kbar, T = 450500°C and P = 1416 kbar, T =400450°C in the Upper and Lower Units, respectively.Peak PT conditions were followed by a nearly isothermaldecompression for both units at slightly different temperatures(of the order of 50°C). The contact between the two units,i.e. the garnet isograd, is interpreted as a greenschist-faciesductile thrust. Thrusting of the higher-grade unit, i.e. theUpper Unit, over the Lower Unit occurred after the high-pressureevent, i.e. during the exhumation of both units. The observedsuperposition of higher-grade rocks over lower-grade rocks arguesagainst models where the exhumation history is entirely controlledby crustal-scale vertical shortening (i.e. extension). The Bengal basin, Bangladesh, represents one of the most densely populated recent floodplains of the world. The sediment
flux through the basin is one of the highest on a global scale. A significant portion of this sediment load find its sink
in the basin itself because of its lower elevation and frequent flooding. The textural, mineralogical and chemical nature
of the sediments thus have an important bearing on the environmental quality of the basin as well as for the Bay of Bengal.
The sediment load of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) river system consists exclusively of fine sand, silt and clay at
their lower reaches within the Bengal basin, Bangladesh, and is deposited under uniformly fluctuating, unidirectional energy
conditions. The sediments have a close simitarity in grain size with the sediments of the surrounding floodplain. The mineral
assemblage is dominated by quartz and feldspars. Illite and kaolinite are the major clay minerals, and occur in almost equal
proportion in bed sediments. The heavy mineral assemblage is dominated by unstable minerals which are mostly derived from
high-rank metamorphic rocks. The characteristic smaller grain-size, i.e. having large surface-to-mass ratios, and the mineralogy
of sediments suggests that they are susceptible to large chemical adsorptive reactions and thus could serve as a potential
trap for contaminants. However, the sediments of the GBM river system in the Bengal basin, Bangladesh, shows lower concentration
of Pb, Hg and As, and a marginally higher value for Cd as compared to that of standard shale. Considering population density
and extensive agricultural practice in the basin, the sediments can in the long run become contaminated.

The response of the midlatitude F 2 layer to the effect of powerful HF radiowaves is studied using the numerical model of the ionosphere. The large-scale modification of the F 2 layer over the Sura heating facility near Nizhni Novgorod is considered for autumnal conditions. The calculations are performed for various cases when the heating wave has different frequencies under the daytime and nighttime conditions. The calculation results show that large-scale changes in the electron temperature and density in the F 2 layer caused by the artificial heating should substantially depend on the heating radiowave frequency. It is found that there should exist such, most effective, heating wave frequency at which a decrease in the electron density at the F 2 layer maximum height over the heating facility should be maximal. 相似文献

Surface and core sediments collected from six mariculture farms in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) were analyzed to evaluate contamination levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The ∑PCBs (37 congeners) concentrations ranged from 5.10 to 11.0 ng g(-1) (mean 7.96 ng g(-1)) in surface and 3.19 to 22.1 ng g(-1) (mean 7.75 ng g(-1)) in core sediments, respectively. The concentrations were significantly higher than that measured in the sediments of their corresponding reference sites, whereby the average enrichment percentages were 62.0% and 42.7% in surface and core sediments, respectively. Significant correlations (R2=0.77, p<0.05) of PCB homologue group proportions between fish feeds and surface mariculture sediments suggested that fish feed input was probably the main source for the enrichment of PCBs. Due to the fact that PCBs could be transferred along food chains, PCB contamination in fish feeds and mariculture sediments should not be overlooked. 相似文献

Geostatistical simulation aims at reproducing the variability of the real underlying phenomena. When nonlinear features or large-range connectivity is present, the traditional variogram-based simulation approaches do not provide good reproduction of those features. Connectivity of high and low values is often critical for grades in a mineral deposit. Multiple-point statistics can help to characterize these features. The use of multiple-point statistics in geostatistical simulation was proposed more than 10 years ago, on the basis of the use of training images to extract the statistics. This paper proposes the use of multiple-point statistics extracted from actual data. A method is developed to simulate continuous variables. The indicator kriging probabilities used in sequential indicator simulation are modified by probabilities extracted from multiple-point configurations. The correction is done under the assumption of conditional independence. The practical implementation of the method is illustrated with data from a porphyry copper mine. 相似文献

A numerical study of gas flow through a porous cometary mantle is presented. A kinetic model based on the well-known Test Particle Monte Carlo Method for the solution of rarefied gas dynamics problems is proposed. The physical model consists of two spatial plane regions: the condensed ice phase and a porous dust mantle. The structure of the porous dust layer is described as a bundle of cylindrical inclined channels not crossing each other. A vertical temperature gradient may exist across the dust mantle. The aim is to investigate how the characteristics of molecular flow depend on the capillary length, inclination angle, and temperature gradient. Examples illustrating a significant deviation of some results from equilibrium values are shown. In particular, the gas velocity distribution at both ends of the pore is strongly non-Maxwellian if there is an important temperature contrast across the pore. The emergent gas flow rate is found to vary with the pore length/radius ratio in excellent agreement with Clausing's empirical formula. The degree of collimation of the flow is quantitatively studied as a function of the length/radius ratio, and consequences for the jet force of outgassing through a dust mantle or, indeed, a rough surface are estimated. 相似文献
