The long-term evolution of stellar orbits bound to a massive centre is studied in order to understand the cores of star clusters in central regions of galaxies. Stellar trajectories undergo tiny perturbations, the origins of which are twofold: (i) the gravitational field of a thin gaseous disc surrounding the galactic centre, and (ii) cumulative drag arising from successive interactions of the stars with the material of the disc. Both effects are closely related because they depend on the total mass of the disc, assumed to be a small fraction of the central mass. It is shown that, in contrast to previous works, most of the retrograde (with respect to the disc) orbits are captured by the central object, presumably a massive black hole. Initially prograde orbits are also affected, so that statistical properties of the central star cluster in quasi-equilibrium may differ significantly from those deduced in previous analyses.  相似文献

We have studied the dynamics in the sunspot transition region between the chromosphere and the corona and investigated the extension of the flow field into the corona. Based on EUV spectra of a medium size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, observed with CDS and SUMER on SOHO, we derive line-of-sight velocities and study the line profiles for a series of emission lines.The flow field in the low corona is found to differ markedly from that in the transition region. In the transition region the relative line-of-sight velocity shows an upflow in the umbra and relatively large areas with downflow that cover part of the penumbra. The spatial extent of these areas with upflow and downflow increases with increasing temperature in the transition region, but the whole flow field changes character as the temperature increases from the upper transition region to the low corona. Based on a calibration of the SUMER wavelength scale we find that the entire sunspot transition zone appears to be moving downwards towards the chromosphere. The relation between this finding and the general tendency for transition-region lines to show a net red shift is discussed.Several of the transition-region spectral line profiles are observed to show two line components with Gaussian shape and line-of-sight velocities that differ markedly. Several of the line profiles that are composed of two spectral line components occur close to the dividing line between up- and downflow. A discussion of this observation is presented. In small regions with spatial extent of a few arc sec we detect enhanced continuum emission underlying explosive events. The similarities between explosive events with continuum emission and the moustaches observed in H close to sunspots are so striking that we are tempted to introduce the notation transition-region moustaches.  相似文献

During the recent apparition of comet Hale—Bopp (1995 O1) near infrared photometric observations were carried out in the J, H, K filter bands and also in the 3.0—3.4 μm region at the 1.2 m telescope at Gurushikkar, India. The effective temperature of the comet was substantially higher than the equilibrium blackbody temperature. A mean superheat value of 1.83 was derived in the post-perihelion phase which implies that a large fraction of the grain population are made up of small and hot grains with radii <0.5 μm. High albedo values of ∼0.4 were also derived in the scattering angle range 135° to 160° which could explain the unusual brightness of comet Hale—Bopp. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The HEGRA experiment investigates the relativistic (non thermal) universe by measuring air showers initiated in the atmosphere by photons and charged particles from the cosmos, using the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov light technique (> 500 GeV) and the showerfront sampling technique (> 20 TeV). New results concerning the search and study of gamma ray sources above 500 GeV, the measurement of the energy spectrum and chemical composition of cosmic rays above 1 PeV and the search of TeV counterparts of Gamma Ray Bursts are briefly described. We present a comprehensive analysis of the 17 August 1994 flare, the first flare imaged at millimeter (86 GHz) wavelengths. The temporal evolution of this flare displays a prominent impulsive peak shortly after 01:02 UT, observed in hard X-rays and at microwave frequencies, followed by a gradual decay phase. The gradual phase was also detected at 86 GHz. Soft X-ray images show a compact emitting region (20), which is resolved into two sources: a footpoint and a loop top source. Nonthermal emissions at microwave and hard X-ray wavelengths are analyzed and the accelerated electron spectrum is calculated. This energy spectrum derived from the microwave and hard X-ray observations suggests that these emissions were created by the same electron population. The millimeter emission during the gradual phase is thermal bremsstrahlung originating mostly from the top of the flaring loop. The soft X-rays and the millimeter flux density from the footpoint source are only consistent with the presence of a multi-temperature plasma at the footpoint.  相似文献

Geodetic satellites have been providing the low frequency part of the geopotential models used for precise orbit determination purposes (e.g. JGM3, EGM96, …). Nevertheless they can be used to estimate the temporal variation of selected coefficients, helping to clarify the complex interrelations in the earth-ocean-atmosphere system. In this paper we present the two years long analysis of SLR data from the seven available geodetic satellites (Lageos I–II, Stella, Starlette, Ajisai, Etalon I–II) to recover monthly estimates of low degree geopotential coefficients; the results are obtained analysing the satellites separately and in proper combination. An accurate modelling of the satellite orbits is required in order to separate the geopotential coefficients: we assume as a priori geopotential the JGM3 model together with its associated tides and we take care of non-gravitational effects on the satellites by means of proper empirical estimated accelerations. The time series of the estimated coefficients (J2, J3, J4, J5) are inspected to detect the sub-annual perturbations related to seasonal variation of mass distribution. Huge residual seasonal signals in the orbit of Stella indicate a strong model deficiency related to the Sun's influence on the environment. The remaining six satellites are homogeneously modelled and build up a three cycles per year oscillation on J2 and a seasonal oscillation (1 year and six month periods) revealed on the J4. The origin and possible causes of these signals are further discussed in the text. We also present a preliminary estimate, using twelve years of Lageos-I and Lageos-II observations, that is compared with previous obtained values.  相似文献

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are one of the Union Territories of India, located in the eastern part of the Bay of Bengal. In 2010 summer, the increment in sea surface water temperature (up to 34℃) resulted in the bleaching of about 74% to 77% of corals in the South Andaman. During this event, coral species such as Acropora cerealis, A. humilis, Montipora sp., Favia pallida, Diploastrea sp., Goniopora sp. Fungia concinna, Gardineroseries sp., Porites sp., Favites abdita and Lobophyllia robusta were severely affected. This study is to assess the recovery status of the reef ecosystem by estimating the percentage of Live Coral cover, Bleached coral cover, Dead coral with algae, Rubble, Sandy flat, Algal assemblage and other associated organisms. The sedimentation rate (mg cm-2 d-1) and coral coverage (%) were assessed during this study period. The average sedimentation rate was ranged between 0.27 and 0.89 mg cm-2 d-1 . The observed post bleaching recovery of coral cover was 21.1% at Port Blair Bay and 13.29% at Havelock Island. The mortality rate of coral cover due to this bleaching was estimated as 2.05% at Port Blair Bay and 9.82% at Havelock Island. Once the sea water temperature resumed back to the normal condition, most of the corals were found recovered.  相似文献
