The intention of our study was to gain new insight into the complex interplay between different types of eruption of the Stromboli volcano by combining detailed field observation with different geophysical methods. We recorded more than 600 eruptions by use of continuous Doppler radar measurements. We detected the onset of the seismic precursor and the beginning of the visible eruption by use of seismic and infrared data. Two soil samples per day were used to monitor the effect of humidity on the eruptive style. We mapped the crater region as a reference base for the long-term morphological changes of the active region and for the exact positions of our measurement systems. Two distinct types of eruption were distinguished from each other on the basis of seismic and radar data - short, wide-angle Strombolian explosions and pulsating, sharp angle fountain-like eruptions. Data and visual observations imply that weather conditions significantly effect volcanic activity. We also interpret the intensification of eruptive activity during our field study as replenishment of the reservoir with a new batch of magma in late September 2000. 相似文献

Geometric Aspects and Testing of the Galactic Center Distance Determination from Spiral Arm Segments
We consider the problem of determining the geometric parameters of a Galactic spiral arm from its segment by including the distance to the spiral pole, i.e., the distance to the Galactic center (R0). The question about the number of points belonging to one turn of a logarithmic spiral and defining this spiral as a geometric figure has been investigated numerically and analytically by assuming the direction to the spiral pole (to the Galactic center) to be known. Based on the results obtained, in an effort to test the new approach, we have constructed a simplified method of solving the problem that consists in finding the median of the values for each parameter from all possible triplets of objects in the spiral arm segment satisfying the condition for the angular distance between objects. Applying the method to the data on the spatial distribution of masers in the Perseus and Scutum arms (the catalogue by Reid et al. (2014)) has led to an estimate of R0 = 8.8 ± 0.5 kpc. The parameters of five spiral arm segments have been determined from masers of the same catalogue. We have confirmed the difference between the spiral arms in pitch angle. The pitch angles of the arms revealed by masers are shown to generally correlate with R0 in the sense that an increase in R0 leads to a growth in the absolute values of the pitch angles. 相似文献

Thomson (incoherent) scatter radar measurements of F-region electron densities and temperatures were made approximately twice per month throughout 1966 and 1967 at Millstone Hill for periods of 24 hr. Owing to the increase in sunspot activity the results display a rich variety of different types of behaviour. Geomagnetically quiet days tended to follow patterns observed near sunspot minimum. Thus in winter there is typically a marked diurnal variation in electron density with a peak near noon and often a smaller secondary maximum between 02 and 04 EST. In summer there is less day-to-night variation and the peak density is encountered near ground sunset. Usually hmaxF2 is higher in summer than winter and the layer thickness is larger also.Some magnetically disturbed days follow a distinct pattern in which Nmax and hmax are normal during the first day of the storm until afternoon when they both increase to very high values. There is then a corresponding decrease in electron temperature. During the night the electron temperature often reaches abnormally high values, providing evidence of nocturnal heating. On the following day Nmax and hmax are abnormally low.During 1967 instances in which the trough of low electron density moved south to occupy a position over Millstone became frequent. The electron temperature rose to particularly high values on these occasions. These morphological features are discussed in terms of current theoretical ideas. The results are also employed to derive seasonal variations of electron temperature and protonospheric heat flux. It is shown that since 1964 the protonospheric heat flux has been larger in winter than summer and displays a clear sunspot cycle variation. 相似文献

This communication is dedicated to the investigation history and naming of the undersea morphostructures of the Sea of Japan for the last 50 years. Many of them were first described and studied during long-term geological-geophysical investigations in this basin carried out by Russian scientists. The analysis of 60 names of its undersea feature names revealed that only approximately half of them are cited in the GEBCO Gazetteer some of the undersea morphostructures are known under two or more names, the origin of their names is unknown, or their names were chosen voluntarily. For maintaining the priority of Russian investigations, the nomenclature and names of the undersea features should be adjusted in accordance with the national and international principles and regulations. 相似文献

Fragmentation, or the "coming apart" of magma during a plinian eruption, remains one of the least understood processes in
volcanology, although assumptions about the timing and mechanisms of fragmentation are key parameters in all existing eruption
models. Despite evidence to the contrary, most models assume that fragmentation occurs at a critical vesicularity (volume
percent vesicles) of 75–83%. We propose instead that the degree to which magma is fragmented is determined by factors controlling
bubble coalescence: magma viscosity, temperature, bubble size distribution, bubble shapes, and time. Bubble coalescence in
vesiculating magmas creates permeability which serves to connect the dispersed gas phase. When sufficiently developed, permeability
allows subsequent exsolved and expanded gas to escape, thus preserving a sufficiently interconnected region of vesicular magma
as a pumice clast, rather than fully fragmenting it to ash. For this reason pumice is likely to preserve information about
(a) how permeability develops and (b) the critical permeability needed to insure clast preservation. We present measurements
and calculations that constrain the conditions (vesicularity, bubble size distribution, time, pressure difference, viscosity)
necessary for adequate permeability to develop. We suggest that magma fragments explosively to ash when and where, in a heterogeneously
vesiculating magma, these conditions are not met. Both the development of permeability by bubble wall thinning and rupture
and the loss of gas through a permeable network of bubbles require time, consistent with the observation that degree of fragmentation
(i.e., amount of ash) increases with increasing eruption rate.

The model of a saturated porous medium with a brittle deformable skeleton is formulated in an isothermal approximation. The general form of governing equations is found, which is necessary and sufficient to fulfill the principles of objectivity and thermodynamic consistency. It is shown that the kinetics of developing the ensemble of microcracks, determined by the derivative of the elastic potential of the skeleton with respect to the fracture parameter, results in a nonnegative dissipation of the scattered destruction with any type of loading. For small deviations from the initial state, a new elastic potential is proposed which has made it possible to describe the main irregularities of the behavior of the medium in question. The solution of the problem about the consolidation of a saturated porous half-space with a brittle skeleton under a normal load has been constructed. 相似文献

This paper interprets differences in flood hazard projections over Europe and identifies likely sources of discrepancy. Further, it discusses potential implications of these differences for flood risk reduction and adaptation to climate change. The discrepancy in flood hazard projections raises caution, especially among decision makers in charge of water resources management, flood risk reduction, and climate change adaptation at regional to local scales. Because it is naïve to expect availability of trustworthy quantitative projections of future flood hazard, in order to reduce flood risk one should focus attention on mapping of current and future risks and vulnerability hotspots and improve the situation there. Although an intercomparison of flood hazard projections is done in this paper and differences are identified and interpreted, it does not seems possible to recommend which large-scale studies may be considered most credible in particular areas of Europe.

Widely applied bioindication methods are analyzed based on the survey data of 1980–1996 for over 400 lakes and 300 watercourses in the northeastern Fennoscandia known to experience anthropogenic impact (toxification, acidification, eutrophication, and thermofication). Representative results of hydrobiological analysis of the quality of surface waters in areas with mixed toxic pollution (or anthropogenic acidification) may be obtained if methods are applied, different from the bioindication methods that are now accepted as standard for Russia, along with methods of biotesting natural waters. The GRACE satellites have been orbiting the Earth since 2002, monitoring the time variable gravity field. Some of the observed fluctuations are due to geodynamic causes, but they are often hidden in the complex signal, composed of hydrology, ocean, atmosphere, and geodynamics, the signal of geodynamic origin being usually the smallest. In addition, dealiasing residuals and noise make the separation of the signal from the different causes more difficult. We proposed a method based on the Empirical Orthogonal Function decomposition to extract the signal of physical origin, under the hypothesis that the physical signal is spatially more consistent than the noise and aliasing incomplete correction. We used synthetic geoid variations associated with earthquakes located at nearly 2000 positions at the Earth surface, based on several examples of large actual subduction events. We show that, with the present day accuracy, we can retrieve the geoid variations associated with more than 98 per cent of the earthquakes of magnitude 9 or above, around 60 per cent for magnitude 8.8, 40 per cent for magnitude 8.6 and 33 per cent for magnitude 8.3. Some events, with the right properties and location, can be detected with magnitude as low as 8. We then applied the method to the GRACE solutions, and retrieved the Hokkaido event (2003) and the Sumatra event (2004), which is in agreement with the retrieval rates mentioned here above. 相似文献

The data obtained on the sodic part of the SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-K2O system with F at 800°C and 1 kbar provide the basis for constructing a phase diagram showing the region of an aluminosilicate melt. In this system, oxide and fluoride phases are identified that control the stability field of the melt and the solubility of F. Liquid immiscibility was detected in aluminous nepheline-and quartz-normative Li-bearing compositions (the latter compositions are characterized by a wider immiscibility field). Solubility of F was determined in an aluminosilicate melt saturated with respect to F, i.e., coexisting with phases rich in this element. The F concentrations in the glasses range from 2 to 20 wt %. The quartz-normative glasses are poorer in F (no more than 5 wt % F) than the nepheline-normative glasses (which contain mostly 5–10 wt % F). The maximum F concentrations (> 10 wt %) in the phase diagram lie on both sides of the albite composition point in the region of ultragpaitic nepheline-normative melts and in the region of normal syenite melts. Changes in the phase relations when Na is substituted for K were determined in the quartz-normative silicate melt. 相似文献
