Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) data, obtained from NOAA polar orbiting satellites for the months March–June, for 31 years is utilized to investigate low-frequency oscillation in pre-monsoon convection over southwest peninsular Indian region. The analysis reveals a characteristic fall in OLR over the region, about 5–9 weeks prior to the onset of Indian summer monsoon in almost all the years under study. Such fall is shown to be related with a characteristic peak in convective activity associated with the movement of Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone over the region. The results suggest an indirect non-linear relationship between the time of occurrence of the pre-monsoon convective peak and the onset date. A regression equation is developed to predict the onset date. The results of estimation of present method and that of an earlier method (based on conventional synoptic observations) are compared. The performance of both these methods is validated for two independent years (2007 and 2008). The study highlights the potential application of the developed method for the prediction of onset of Indian summer monsoon well in advance using the remotely sensed satellite-derived OLR data. 相似文献

We present the results of a multidisciplinary study of the Ms = 6.2, 1995, June 15, Aigion earthquake (Gulf of Corinth, Greece). In order to constrain the rupture geometry, we used all available data from seismology (local, regional and teleseismic records of the mainshock and of aftershocks), geodesy (GPS and SAR interferometry), and tectonics. Part of these data were obtained during a postseismic field study consisting of the surveying of 24 GPS points, the temporary installation of 20 digital seismometers, and a detailed field investigation for surface fault break. The Aigion fault was the only fault onland which showed detectable breaks (< 4 cm). We relocated the mainshock hypocenter at 10 km in depth, 38 ° 21.7 N, 22 ° 12.0 E, about 15 km NNE to the damaged city of Aigion. The modeling of teleseismic P and SH waves provides a seismic moment Mo = 3.4 1018 N.m, a well constrained focal mechanism (strike 277 °, dip 33 °, rake – 77°), at a centroidal depth of 7.2 km, consistent with the NEIC and the revised Harvard determinations. It thus involved almost pure normal faulting in agreement with the tectonics of the Gulf. The horizontal GPS displacements corrected for the opening of the gulf (1.5 cm/year) show a well-resolved 7 cm northward motion above the hypocenter, which eliminates the possibility of a steep, south-dipping fault plane. Fitting the S-wave polarization at SERG, 10 km from the epicenter, with a 33° northward dipping plane implies a hypocentral depth greater than 10 km. The north dipping fault plane provides a poor fit to the GPS data at the southern points when a homogeneous elastic half-space is considered: the best fit geodetic model is obtained for a fault shallower by 2 km, assuming the same dip. We show with a two-dimensional model that this depth difference is probably due to the distorting effect of the shallow, low-rigidity sediments of the gulf and of its edges. The best-fit fault model, with dimensions 9 km E–W and 15 km along dip, and a 0.87 m uniform slip, fits InSAR data covering the time of the earthquake. The fault is located about 10 km east-northeast to the Aigion fault, whose surface breaks thus appears as secondary features. The rupture lasted 4 to 5 s, propagating southward and upward on a fault probably outcropping offshore, near the southern edge of the gulf. In the shallowest 4 km, the slip – if any – has not exceeded about 30 cm. This geometry implies a large directivity effect in Aigion, in agreement with the accelerogram aig which shows a short duration (2 s) and a large amplitude (0.5 g) of the direct S acceleration. This unusual low-angle normal faulting may have been favoured by a low-friction, high pore pressure fault zone, or by a rotation of the stress directions due to the possible dip towards the south of the brittle-ductile transition zone. This fault cannot be responsible for the long term topography of the rift, which is controlled by larger normal faults with larger dip angles, implying either a seldom, or a more recently started activity of such low angle faults in the central part of the rift. 相似文献

This study investigates the performance of two planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterisations in the regional climate model RegCM4.2 with specific focus on the recently implemented prognostic turbulent kinetic energy parameterisation scheme: the University of Washington (UW) scheme. When compared with the default Holtslag scheme, the UW scheme, in the 10-year experiments over the European domain, shows a substantial cooling. It reduces winter warm bias over the north-eastern Europe by 2 °C and reduces summer warm bias over central Europe by 3 °C. A part of the detected cooling is ascribed to a general reduction in lower tropospheric eddy heat diffusivity with the UW scheme. While differences in temperature tendency due to PBL schemes are mostly localized to the lower troposphere, the schemes show a much higher diversity in how vertical turbulent mixing of the water vapour mixing ratio is governed. Differences in the water vapour mixing ratio tendency due to the PBL scheme are present almost throughout the troposphere. However, they alone cannot explain the overall water vapour mixing ratio profiles, suggesting strong interaction between the PBL and other model parameterisations. An additional 18-member ensemble with the UW scheme is made, where two formulations of the master turbulent length scale in unstable conditions are tested and unconstrained parameters associated with (a) the evaporative enhancement of the cloud-top entrainment and (b) the formulation of the master turbulent length scale in stable conditions are systematically perturbed. These experiments suggest that the master turbulent length scale in the UW scheme could be further refined in the current implementation in the RegCM model. It was also found that the UW scheme is less sensitive to the variations of the other two selected unconstrained parameters, supporting the choice of these parameters in the default formulation of the UW scheme. 相似文献

Sediment core PI-6 from Lake Petén Itzá, Guatemala, possesses an ~85-ka record of climate and environmental change from lowland Central America. Variations in sediment lithology suggest large and abrupt changes in precipitation during the last glacial and deglacial periods, and into the early Holocene. We measured stable carbon isotope ratios of total organic carbon and long-chain n-alkanes from the core, the latter representing a largely allochthonous (terrestrial) source of organic matter, to reveal past shifts in the relative proportion of C3–C4 terrestrial biomass. We sought to test whether stable carbon isotope results were consistent with other paleoclimate proxies measured in the PI-6 core, and if extraction and isotope analysis of n-alkanes is warranted. The largest δ13C variations are associated with Heinrich Events. Carbon isotope values in sediments deposited during the last glacial maximum indicate moderate precipitation with little fluctuation. The deglacial was a period of pronounced climate variability, e.g. a relatively warm and moist Bølling–Allerød, but a cool and dry Younger Dryas. Arid periods of the deglacial were inferred from samples with high δ13C values in total organic carbon, which reflect times of greater proportions of C4 plants. These inferences are supported by stable isotope measurements on ostracod shells and relative abundance of grass pollen from the same depths in core PI-6. Similar trends in carbon stable isotopes measured on bulk organic carbon and n-alkanes suggest that carbon isotope measures on bulk organic carbon in sediments from this lake are sufficient to infer past climate-driven shifts in local vegetation. 相似文献

The compositions of parental melts of Tolbachinsky Dol (Kamchatka) basalts were estimated from the compositions of olivine-hosted (Fo90.5-83.1) primitive melt inclusions in the rocks of the Northern breakthrough of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975 A.C.) and of the late-Holocene cone “1004”. The parental melts contain 100–150 ppm Cu and 0.16–0.30 wt % S. These concentrations are much higher than those determined for the initial magmas of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), for example of the Juan de Fuca ridge (Cu = 55–105 ppm, S=0.09–0.12 wt %). Modeling of mantle melting under variable redox conditions demonstrated that the high Cu and S contents in the Tolbachinsky Dol melts can be obtained by 6–12% melting of DMM-like source under oxidized conditions (ΔQFM = +1.2 ± 0.1) and do not require a significant (>30–35% for S) subduction-related influx of these elements to the mantle source. The high contents of Cu and S in the Tolbachinsky Dol melts are largely explained by the increase of sulfide solubility in a silicate melt under oxidized conditions. In contrast, relatively reduced (ΔQFM ~ 0) conditions of MORB generation result in low contents of Cu and S in their initial magmas. The estimated ΔQFM values agree well with the data obtained using the Cr-spinel–olivine oxybarometer. The high oxygen potential of Tolbachinsky Dol primary magmas is inherited by more evolved magmas, thus favouring Cu enrichment up to 270 ppm during magma fractionation, approaching maximum copper contents in the global systematics of island-arc rocks. 相似文献

An ensemble of convective thermals is distinguished from the surface layer of penetrative turbulent convection over a heated
horizontally uniform surface. For an isolated convective element, an integral model of a quasi-stationary spontaneous jet
is proposed which admits an exact analytical solution. A simple statistical model is constructed for an ensemble of dynamically
identical thermals. In this model, convective thermals ascend in a static environment, their dynamic parameters are described
by the equations of an isolated quasi-stationary jet, and their diameters are stochastic. It is shown that the ensemble of
thermals rising in a horizontally homogeneous environment forms surface-layer turbulent moments. The analytical relationships
for higher turbulent moments of vertical velocity and temperature are compared with experimental data from the second to the

Concentrations of the (n, γ)-produced radionuclide60Co were measured in lunar samples at various depths from the surface down to 360 g/cm2. By comparing the data obtained to calculated production rates (based on the work of Lingenfelter et al. A novel method for synthesis of aluminium hematites, based upon the homogeneous precipitation of Fe and Al oxinates in various proportions, is presented. The precursor precipitates are heated in air at 700?°C. X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, BET, FTIR, optical reflection analysis, TEM and Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature and 80?K of the resulting products indicate that single-phase hematites are formed with structural Al substitution of up to 10 at%. Interestingly, the particle size (>100?nm) is not substantially reduced by the Al content. Although it remains difficult to obtain a homogeneously distributed Al substitution in the final hematite, this processing line offers a unique opportunity to separate the effects of grain size and Al substitution on the Morin transition temperature (T M) of Al hematite. From the comparison between the present hematites and a series of Al-substituted hematites with lepidocrocite as precursor, it could be shown that the effect on T M, associated with a change of a factor 10 in grain size, is about 1/3 of the effect caused by a change of 10 in the degree of substitution. Finally, it is suggested that proper thermal treatments under different conditions of the same precursors are likely to produce spinel phases. 相似文献
