Magnetometer array studies have led to the discovery and mapping of the Southern Cape Conductive Belt (SCCB) crossing the southern tip of Africa from west to southeast coasts. The SCCB lies just south of the Namaqua-Natal Belt of cratonic rocks remobilized about 1000 m.y. B.P. It is shown that it coincides with a zone of weakness which has been exploited by three major geosynclinal accumulations over some 600 m.y. Relationships between the SCCB and the basement geochronology, geology and tectonics are considered in detail. These relationships support the view that the conductive belt was formed by an accumulation of marine sediments and oceanic lithosphere at the top of a Proterozoic subduction which stopped about 1000 to 800 m.y. B.P. Associated with this subduction we propose a Proterozoic range of Andean mountains, whose roots are now exposed in the Namaqua-Natal Belt. Later subduction further south, near the present south coast, is proposed to account for the intrusion, between the south coast and the SCCB, of the Cape Granites in the time interval 600-500 m.y. B.P. There is some evidence for a third, yet more distant, subduction episode off Permian Gondwanaland. After outlining this tectonic history, the paper turns to a closer examination of the hypothesis that the Southern Cape Conductive Belt consists of partly serpentinized basalt accumulated at the top of a Proterozoic subduction. A large static magnetic anomaly, which correlates with the SCCB over most of its length, is well fitted by a model which strongly supports this hypothesis. Bouguer gravity anomalies along western and central profiles likewise support the hypothesis. A discussion follows of the process of formation of the proposed block of serpentinized marine rocks, beginning with serpentinization of the crust near oceanic ridges by reaction of warm, porous, newly-extruded basalt with seawater convecting through it. The serpentinized basalt is stable at crustal temperatures and pressures and so is transported in the seafloor until it reaches a subduction, where it accumulates because of its low density. Examples of such accumulations are cited. Finally, it is shown that any iron in the olivine and pyroxene in the original basalt precipitates, when these silicates are hydrated to serpentine, as magnetite which is the dominant mineral conferring high electrical conductivity and high magnetic susceptibility on serpentinites. In particular the Beattie static magnetic anomaly requires, in our model calculation, a very high susceptibility readily attainable in basalt at 15–20% serpentinization. The authors know of no other rock able to provide this high susceptibility. A similar percentage of serpentinization provides the density required to model the gravity anomalies. 相似文献

The sedimentary record from Lake George provides the longest relatively continuous Quaternary continental sequence yet available from Australia, and may record one of the longest Upper Cainozoic lacustrine records in the world. Palaeomagnetic analysis of a 36 m core from the lake floor identifies a sequence of deposition extending through the Brunhes and Matuyama, to the Gauss magnetic Chron. A longer core from the same site, but with incomplete recovery, extends to 72 m in lacustrine sediment; the age of the base of this core estimated by extrapolation is between 4.2 and 7 Ma. As there are still older and deeper sediments in the basin, extending to an estimated depth of 134 m, the age of the tectonic formation of the Lake George basin must be reckoned as Middle Miocene or older. The pattern of facies organisation through time demonstrates a phase of deep water deposition extending from the base of the cored sequence (72 m) up to 51.5 m, at which time a major change took place. A disconformity developed at this level, associated with a period of deep weathering and a prolonged phase of slope mantle deposition (from 51.5 to 30.8 m). A gradual return to lacustrine environments, with diminishing proportion of slope wash detritus, resulted in increased rates of deposition coincident with the Jaramillo Subchron at 21.5 m. Thereafter, throughout the Brunhes magnetic Chron, lacustrine conditions dominated, varying from deep to lake dry conditions in a rhythmic fashion, and reflecting the major climatic oscillations of the past 700 000 years, becoming more regular in the past 400 000 years. The pollen analytical record of the upper 8.6 m, covering the last 350 000 years, provides the main framework for the reconstruction of climatic history. The pollen and algal records indicate a sequence of vegetation and lake level changes, in which four major glacial/interglacial cycles are correlated with stages 1 to 10 of the 180 marine record. This provides by far the longest continuous biostratigraphic framework for the Quaternary period in Australia. Comparison between the palaeoclimatic record and the lake level evidence shows that there is no simple correlation between the lake level fluctuations and the glacial/ interglacial oscillations. In fact, major falls in the lake level occured both at the peak of cold glacials and during the warm interglacials. Though the falls in the lake levels during a warm period (interglacial) can be explained by high rates of evaporation, drying during maximum cold can be explained best in terms of a fall in precipitation. Permanent to deep‐lake conditions generally occurred during intermediate cool periods following warm intervals, when perhaps the seas were still warm and low rates of evaporation on land prevailed. On the other hand, short periods of shallow to deep lake levels also occurred during warm (interglacial) periods, showing that these were associated with reasonably high rates of precipitation. 相似文献

We discuss the properties of gamma-ray radiation accompanying the acceleration of cosmic rays via the converter mechanism.
The mechanism exploits multiple photon-induced conversions of high-energy particles from charged into neutral state (namely,
protons to neutrons and electrons to photons) and back. Because a particle in the neutral state can freely cross the magnetic
field lines, this allows to avoid both particle losses downstream and reduction in the energy gain factor, which normally
takes place due to highly collimated distribution of accelerated particles. The converter mechanism efficiently operates in
relativistic outflows under the conditions typical for Active Galactic Nuclei, Gamma-Ray Bursts, and microquasars, where it
outperforms the standard diffusive shock acceleration.
The accompanying radiation has a number of distinctive features, such as an increase of the maximum energy of synchrotron
photons and peculiar radiation beam-pattern, whose opening angle is much wider at larger photon energies. This provides an
opportunity to observe off-axis relativistic jets in GeV–TeV energy range. One of the implications is the possibility to explain
high-latitude unidentified EGRET sources as off-axis but otherwise typical relativistic-jet sources, such as blazars. 相似文献

The study area is the South Tatarstan Arch located in the Volgo-Ural Region, which is an enigmatic crustal segment occupying
one third of the East European Platform. Monitoring studies have shown that fluid discharge processes are still active and
time-dependent. This paper presents an integrated review of the geological, geophysical, hydrochemical and geochemical studies
of the crystalline basement of Tatarstan. These studies are based on the stratigraphic and compositional schemes within the
crystalline basement, the drilling of deep wells, the geodynamic activity of the fractured zones of the crystalline basement
and the presence of fluids therein. Furthermore, the changes in the chemical composition of the basement waters are taken

Chemistry of major and minor elements, 87Sr/86Sr, δD, δ18O and δ34S of brines were measured from Tertiary strata and Quaternary salt lakes in the western Qaidam Basin. The water chemistry
data show that all oilfield brines are CaCl2 type. They were enriched in Ca2+, B3+, Li+, Sr2+, Br−, and were depleted in Mg2+, SO4
2−, which indicated that these brines had the characteristics of deeply circulated water. The relationship between δD and δ18O shows that all data of these brines decline towards the Global Meteoric Water Line (GWL) and Qaidam Meteoric Water Line
(QWL), and that the intersection between oilfield brines and Meteoric Water Lines was close to the local spring and fresh
water in the piedmont in the western Qaidam Basin. The results suggest that oilfield brines has initially originated from
meteoric water, and then might be affected by water-rock metamorphose, because most oilfield brines distribute in the range
of metamorphosing water. The 87Sr/86Sr values of most oilfield brines range from 0.71121 to 0.71194, and was less than that in salt lake water (>0.712), but close
to that of halite in the study area. These imply that salt dissolution occurred in the process of migration. In addition,
all oilfield brines have obviously much positive δ34S values (ranging from 26.46‰ to 54.57‰) than that of salt lake brines, which was caused by bacterial sulfate reduction resulting
in positive shift of δ34S value and depleteed SO4
2− in oilfield brines. Combined with water chemical data and δD, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr, δ34S values, we concluded that oilfield brines mainly originate from the deeply circulated meteoric waters, and then are affected
by salt dissolution, water-rock metamorphose, sulfate reduction and dolomitization during the process of migration. These
processes alter the chemical compositions of oilfield brines and accumulate rich elements (such as B, Li, Sr, Br, K and so
on) for sustainable utilization of salt lake resources in the Qaidam Basin. 相似文献

Four successive assemblages of Berriasian brachiopods distinguished for the first time in the Crimea are correlated with concurrent subdivisions of the ammonoid scale. Berriasian brachiopods are represented by 44 species of 27 genera and 14 families, which are most complete in terms of taxonomic composition as compared to other concurrent brachiopod faunas known elsewhere. The assemblages are dominated by local species. As is proved, the Berriasian brachiopods studied are appropriate for age determination, subdivision and correlation of their host deposits. Their geographic distribution that has been analyzed elucidates connections of the Berriasian sea basins within the Mediterranean paleozoogeographic region. 相似文献

Metal-rich carbonaceous CB chondrites are generally assumed to be materials accreted from the gas–dust plume formed in catastrophic collisions of planetesimals, at least one of which was differentiated into a metal core and silicate shell. Micron-sized inclusions of siliceous alkali-rich glasses associated with sulfides were found in the metal globules of the Sierra Gorda 013 (SG 013), a CBa-like chondrite. These inclusions are unusual carriers of volatile alkalis which are commonly depleted in CB chondrites. The inclusions are presented by two types: (1) Al-bearing Nb-poor glass associated with daubréelite and (2) Nb-bearing Ca,Al,Mg-poor glass associated with an unknown Na-bearing Cr-sulfide. The glass compositions do not correspond to equilibrium condensation, evaporation, or melting. The Nb-bearing glass has a superchondritic Nb/Ta ratio (31) most likely indicating the fractionation of Nb and Ta in the high-temperature gas–dust impact plume due to condensation from vapor or evaporation of precursor Nb-rich particles. The glasses are interpreted as reaction products between refractory plume condensate particles (or possibly planetary or chondritic solids) with relatively low-temperature K-Na-Si-rich gas in oxidized conditions, possibly in a common plume vapor reservoir. Compositional differences indicate that the glasses and sulfides originated from several different sources under different fO2, fS2, and T conditions and were likely combined together and transported to the metal globule formation region by material flows in the heterogeneous impact plume. The glass–sulfide particles were enclosed in the globules aggregated from smaller solid or molten metal grains. The metal globules were further melted during transport to the high-temperature plume region or by plume shockwave heating. Thus, the composition of the glasses, the host metal, and the main mass of SG 013 shows dynamic heterogeneity of physical conditions and impact plume composition after a large-scale planetesimal collision. 相似文献

One of the most important elements in flood disaster management is the availability of timely information for taking decisions
and actions by the authorities. During the August 18, 2008 Kosi floods which impacted India and Nepal and affected more than
three million people, aero-space technology proved to be a critical input for providing vital information on flood inundation.
The satellite based flood inundation maps were extensively used for identifying marooned villages, submerged roads and railway
tracks and carrying out the relief and rescue operations by the state agencies. Decision Support Centre (DSC) at National
Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) kept a constant watch on the flood situation. More than 200 flood inundation maps, using about
30 satellite datasets were generated and provided in near real time mode to the state agencies during August to October, 2008.
DSC efforts were primarily focused in providing an overall picture of the flood situation in a short span of time to the state
agencies. The present paper discusses about the operational use of remote sensing technology for near real time flood mapping,
monitoring of Kosi floods and the satellite based observations made for the Kosi river breach. 相似文献
