Abstract

Towards the end of the Variscan orogeny, volcano-sedimentary basins were formed within the mountain hell. U-Pb age determinations on zircons of volcanic and plutonic rocks from intramontane basins of the Central Alps allows us to define the age of two volcano-sedimentary units: The former one was dated older than 333 Ma (probably Visean), the younger one was deposited in a short time span between 303 and 298 Ma (Stephanien). The latter contains tuffs (303 ± 4 Ma), ignimbrites and microgranites (299 ± 2 Ma) and intrusive rhyolites (300 ± 2 Ma) that are all coeval within analytical precision. Granitoid rocks intruded into the volcano-sedimentary rocks at 333 ± 2 Ma, 310 ± 3 Ma and 298 ± 2 Ma. An angular unconformity between the older and the younger units in the Tö di area (Aar massif) indicates uplift and erosion between 310 and 303 Ma.

Our results suggest the existence of two periods of late Variscan extension (or transtension) in the Alpine realm, both combined with magmatic activity. The extensional event of Stephaniun age is characterized by a short duration of only a few million years, between 303 and 298 Ma, comprising tectonic activity, volcanism and plutonism. The plutonic rocks are characterized by a dominant lithospheric mantle component, which was contaminated by different amounts of crostai material and might have been increasingly influenced by aslhcnos-pherie mantle melts in the course of crostai thinning. The ealc-alkaline geochemical characteristics of the granites may be explained as an inherited source feature.

The overall tectonic style and the mode of magmatism resembles the situation of the Basin-and-Kange Province (eastern USA). Consequently there is no need to invoke a late-Variscan Andean-type subduction to explain the geochemical composition of the magmatic rocks. We conclude that late-orogenic extension is an important tectonic stage of the Variscan orogeny, which lasted for some 50 million years. The extension led to thinning of the crust and upwelling of hot mantle, causing high heat flow, intrusion of mantle melts and formation of huge volumes of acid melts.  相似文献

The history of variations in water level of Lake Constance, as reconstructed from sediment and pollen analysis of a sediment sequence from the archaeological site of Arbon-Bleiche 3, shows an abrupt rise in lake level dendrochronologically dated to 5375 yr ago (5320 yr relative to AD 1950). This event, paralleled by the destruction of the Neolithic village by fire, provoked the abandonment of this prehistoric lake-shore location established in the former shallow bay of Arbon-Bleiche, and was the last of a series of three episodes of successively higher lake level, the first occurring at 5600-5500 cal yr B.P. The dendrochronologically dated rise event was synchronous with an abrupt increase in atmospheric 14C. This supports the hypothesis of an abrupt climate change forced by varying solar activity. Moreover, the three successive episodes of higher lake level between 5600 and 5300 cal yr B.P. at Arbon-Bleiche 3 coincided with climatic cooling and/or changes in moisture conditions in various regions of both hemispheres. This period corresponds to the mid-Holocene climate transition (onset of the Neoglaciation) and suggests inter-hemispheric linkages for the climate variations recorded at Arbon-Bleiche 3. This mid-Holocene climate reversal may have resulted from complex interactions between changes in orbital forcing, ocean circulation and solar activity. Finally, despite different seasonal hydrological regimes, the similarities between lake-level records from Lake Constance and from Jurassian lakes over the mid-Holocene period point to time scale as a crucial factor in considering the possible impact of climate change on environments.  相似文献

The fossil H chondrite Brunflo, found in a slab of Ordovician limestone from central Sweden, is pervasively altered to an assemblage dominated by calcite and barite. The meteorite is surrounded by a 15–20 cm wide zone of lighter colors than the unaffected limestone due to dissolution of hematite. Here we present detailed geochemical analyses of two meteorite samples, 14 limestone samples at distances from 0 to 29 cm along two profiles from the meteorite, and a reference sample of Brunflo limestone. Element concentrations in Brunflo and surrounding bleached limestone have been strongly disturbed during two stages of alteration (early oxygenated and deep burial). In the meteorite, the Ni/Co ratio has changed from an initial value of 20 to 0.8 and redox sensitive elements like V, As, Mo, Re and U are strongly enriched. The sulfur isotope composition of barite from Brunflo (δ34S=+35‰) indicates initial loss of meteoritic sulfide, followed by later accumulation of sea water sulfate as barite. During deep burial under more reducing conditions, reduction processes supported by an externally derived reductant possibly derived from alum shale underlying the limestone, were largely responsible for the observed redox phenomena. In spite of massive redistribution of many elements, concentrations of Pt, Ir and Au remain at chondritic levels. The geochemistry and mineralogy of alteration determined for Brunflo are similar to those in “reduction spots” in red beds, where accumulation of a similar suite of elements (except Mo, Re) occurred as a result of isolated reduction activity.  相似文献

Capture and geological sequestration of CO2 from large industrial sources is considered a measure for reducing anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and thus mitigating climate change. One of the main storage options proposed are deep saline formations, as they provide the largest potential storage capacities among the geologic options. A thorough assessment of this type of storage site therefore is required. The CO2-MoPa project aims at contributing to the dimensioning of CO2 storage projects and to evaluating monitoring methods for CO2 injection by an integrated approach. For this, virtual, but realistic test sites are designed geometrically and fully parameterized. Numerical process models are developed and then used to simulate the effects of a CO2 injection into the virtual test sites. Because the parameterization of the virtual sites is known completely, investigation as well as monitoring methods can be closely examined and evaluated by comparing the virtual monitoring result with the simulation. To this end, the monitoring or investigation method is also simulated, and the (virtual) measurements are recorded and evaluated like real data. Application to a synthetic site typical for the north German basin showed that pressure response has to be evaluated taking into account the layered structure of the storage system. Microgravimetric measurements are found to be promising for detecting the CO2 phase distribution. A combination of seismic and geoelectric measurements can be used to constrain the CO2 phase distribution for the anticline system used in the synthetic site.  相似文献

Using the database provided by the Reviewed Event Bulletins (REBs) for the first 2.5 years of the Group of Scientific Experts Technical Test-3 (GSETT-3) experiment, we compiled mislocation vectors for both arrays and selected three-component stations of the primary network from the published slowness and azimuth information gained through f-k- and polarization analysis. Imposing constraints such as a minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and number of defining phases, we aim at eliminating location bias as the hypocentral parameters are taken from the REBs. Results from 14 arrays with apertures from about 1 km to more than 20 km are presented as well as from 18 three-component stations, which indicate that the mislocation vectors in many cases can improve location accuracy considerably. If these mislocation vectors are compiled to provide coverage of a sufficient portion of the slowness domain these empirical corrections can easily be applied prior to location processing. In the context of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), these mislocation patterns could be essential for providing accurate event location of suspicious low-magnitude events, as these location parameters will be used to pinpoint the area where to conduct an on-site inspection.  相似文献

Summary For a comparison of snow chemistry data from different glaciers or snow fields it is important to have informations about the spatial representativeness of the data from each of the individual sites. In order to assess the representativeness of concentration data of major ions (volume weighted means of the winter accumulation) from glacier fields we investigated the variability in the average concentration of major ions from parallel samples within one snow pit and from different pits within one glacier field. The variabilities in the average concentrations of NO 3 - , SO 4 2- and NH 4 + for three parallel profiles within one snow pit at Goldbergkees (Austria) were 1.2, 3.3 and 2.0% (coefficient of variation). Cl and Na+ showed larger variations (6.6 and 56.6%) possibly originating from contaminations. The variability of average concentration data from different snow pits within one glacier field was studied at La Grave (France) and at Goldbergkees (Austria). At La Grave 3 pits and at Goldbergkees 4 pits at distance of several hundred meters were sampled. Variabilities for SO 4 2- and NO 3 - were quite similar for the two sites (17% for both ions at La Grave, 12% and 15% at Goldbergkees). Whereas variabilities for Na+, NH 4 + , Mg2+, Ca2+ and Cl were quite low at La Grave ( 12% and 27% for Cl), higher values were obtained at Goldbergkees for these ions (17–56%). Likely reasons for the higher variability observed at Goldbergkees are a) higher spatial variability of crustal aerosol species (Mg2+, Ca2+), b) problems with the detection limit of the analytical method (Ca2+), c) contaminations (Na+, Cl).With 4 Figures  相似文献
