Flora and fauna have both evolved under a natural cycle of light and dark. But especially in urban areas, the night is now
increasingly disturbed by artificial light. Many traits and behaviours in fish are triggered by a circadian clock, for example
hatching and swim bladder inflation, which predominantly take place at dusk or night. As lighting becomes brighter and extends
farther into rural areas, the distinction between day and night becomes increasingly blurred. Therefore, the loss of diurnal
trigger by artificial light at night was hypothesized having deleterious effects on these traits and impact fish reproduction.
To assess these effects, eggs of four native freshwater fishes, Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis, roach Rutilus rutilus, bleak Alburnus alburnus and chub Leuciscus cephalus, were incubated under two different light conditions: a photoperiod of 14 h light:10 h darkness (LD) and continuous illumination
(LL). The time to hatch and swim bladder inflation was recorded. The species showed inconsistent reactions to the light treatments.
In roach and bleak, the time to 50% hatch was longer in LL, whereas continuous lighting had an accelerating effect in chub.
Incubation in LL elongated the hatching period in perch and roach and, in perch, the onset of darkness seemed to trigger hatching.
The swim bladder inflation was significantly promoted by continuous light in chub and bleak but was not affected in roach.
In conclusion, nocturnal artificial illumination could have an effect on hatching and initial swim bladder filling by masking
the day–night-change and thereby diminish the trigger effect. However, the reactions were species specific and the increase
in variation indicated a lack of diurnal triggering, whilst a general deleterious effect of artificial light at night has
not been identified on early life stages. 相似文献

The power spectrum and the rms-value of the granular intensity fluctuations were studied using granulation photographs of excellent quality obtained during the JOSO site testing campaign 1979 at Izaña. The observed power spectrum was corrected using various effective modulation transfer functions of the system: telescope+aberrations+atmospheric seeing, assuming different contributions of the atmospheric seeing. With this procedure a lower and upper limit for the ‘true’ power spectrum of the granular intensity fluctuations and thus for the rms-value could be derived: 7.2% <I rms <12% at λ = 550 nm, with a most probable value of I rms = 10.5%. We checked the validity of the upper limit by applying to our data a MTF (Deubner and Mattig, 1975), which certainly must lead to an overcorrection. This procedure lead to I rms = 13.4%. Thus we can state that the true rms-value of the granular intensity fluctuations does certainly not exceed 13% at λ = 550 nm. 相似文献

Quantum physics challenges our understanding of the nature of physical reality and of space-time and suggests the necessity of radical revisions of their underlying concepts. Experimental tests of quantum phenomena involving massive macroscopic objects would provide novel insights into these fundamental questions. Making use of the unique environment provided by space, MAQRO aims at investigating this largely unexplored realm of macroscopic quantum physics. MAQRO has originally been proposed as a medium-sized fundamental-science space mission for the 2010 call of Cosmic Vision. MAQRO unites two experiments: DECIDE (DECoherence In Double-Slit Experiments) and CASE (Comparative Acceleration Sensing Experiment). The main scientific objective of MAQRO, which is addressed by the experiment DECIDE, is to test the predictions of quantum theory for quantum superpositions of macroscopic objects containing more than 108 atoms. Under these conditions, deviations due to various suggested alternative models to quantum theory would become visible. These models have been suggested to harmonize the paradoxical quantum phenomena both with the classical macroscopic world and with our notion of Minkowski space-time. The second scientific objective of MAQRO, which is addressed by the experiment CASE, is to demonstrate the performance of a novel type of inertial sensor based on optically trapped microspheres. CASE is a technology demonstrator that shows how the modular design of DECIDE allows to easily incorporate it with other missions that have compatible requirements in terms of spacecraft and orbit. CASE can, at the same time, serve as a test bench for the weak equivalence principle, i.e., the universality of free fall with test-masses differing in their mass by 7 orders of magnitude. 相似文献

Neutrino energy spectra have been calculated based on the recently measured energy spectra of Galactic very high energy γ-ray
sources. Based on these neutrino spectra the expected event rates in the ANTARES neutrino telescope and KM3NeT, a future neutrino
telescope in the Mediterranean Sea with an instrumented volume of one km3, have been calculated. For the brightest γ-ray sources we find event rates of the order of one neutrino per year. Although
the neutrino event rates are comparable to the background from atmospheric neutrinos the detection of individual sources seems

Energetic particle (0.1 to 100 MeV protons) acceleration is studied by using high resolution interplanetary magnetic field and plasma measurements at 1 AU (HEOS-2) and at 5 AU (Pioneer 10). Energy changes of a particle population are followed by computing test particle trajectories and the energy changes through the particle interaction with the time varying magnetic field. The results show that considerable particle acceleration takes place throughout the interplanetary medium, both in the corotating interaction regions (CIR) (5 AU), and in quiet regions (1 AU). Although shocks may contribute to acceleration we suggest statistical acceleration within the CIRs is sufficient to explain most energetic particle observations (e.g., McDonaldet al., 1975; Barnes and Simpson, 1976).The first and second order statistical acceleration coefficients which include transit time damping and Alfvén resonance interactions, are found to be well represented byD

Sediment sequences spanning the last 800 years from two small lakes in the south Swedish uplands were explored for assessment of effects of changing human population, local land-use practices and airborne pollution on lake-ecosystem functioning and resilience. Variations in nutrient cycling and deposition of lithogenic elements were studied, using a multi-proxy stratigraphic approach. Carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic analyses were applied in combination with records of hydrocarbons (n-alkanes) to investigate the sources and depositional conditions of sediment organic matter. Changes in fluvial and airborne delivery of inorganic matter were based on X-ray fluorescence measurements. The results reveal that population growth and related increases in land-use pressure had a major impact on catchment erosion and input of terrestrial organic matter to the lakes from the 1500s to the end of the 1800s. Evidence also exists of a brief period of catchment disturbance at ca. 1200–1300, followed by recovery, likely connected to the Black Death pandemic. At ca. 1900 synchronous shifts in most of the proxy records suggest a marked change in external forcing common to the two lakes related to a major decrease in population density and the introduction of modern forestry following the industrial revolution. Interestingly, the two sediment records exhibit generally coherent trends in C/N ratio, organic C content and δ13C, both before and after 1900, indicating broadly similar sensitivities of the lake ecosystems to human impact. In contrast, deviating trends in total N content, δ15N and lithogenic element concentrations (K, Ti, Rb and Zr) reflect site-specific responses to local disturbances during the last century due to different nutrient conditions and catchment properties. Our companion sediment records highlight the importance of understanding long-term human impact on watersheds and demonstrate how regional versus local forcing of lake ecosystems, as well as site-specific responses related to catchment characteristics can be reconstructed. 相似文献

This paper, based on a real world case study (Limmat aquifer, Switzerland), compares inverse groundwater flow models calibrated with specified numbers of monitoring head locations. These models are updated in real time with the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the prediction improvement is assessed in relation to the amount of monitoring locations used for calibration and updating. The prediction errors of the models calibrated in transient state are smaller if the amount of monitoring locations used for the calibration is larger. For highly dynamic groundwater flow systems a transient calibration is recommended as a model calibrated in steady state can lead to worse results than a noncalibrated model with a well-chosen uniform conductivity. The model predictions can be improved further with the assimilation of new measurement data from on-line sensors with the EnKF. Within all the studied models the reduction of 1-day hydraulic head prediction error (in terms of mean absolute error [MAE]) with EnKF lies between 31% (assimilation of head data from 5 locations) and 72% (assimilation of head data from 85 locations). The largest prediction improvements are expected for models that were calibrated with only a limited amount of historical information. It is worthwhile to update the model even with few monitoring locations as it seems that the error reduction with EnKF decreases exponentially with the amount of monitoring locations used. These results prove the feasibility of data assimilation with EnKF also for a real world case and show that improved predictions of groundwater levels can be obtained. 相似文献
