The giant impact hypothesis is the dominant theory explaining the formation of our Moon. However, the inability to produce an isotopically similar Earth–Moon system with correct angular momentum has cast a shadow on its validity. Computer-generated impacts have been successful in producing virtual systems that possess many of the observed physical properties. However, addressing the isotopic similarities between the Earth and Moon coupled with correct angular momentum has proven to be challenging. Equilibration and evection resonance have been proposed as means of reconciling the models. In the summer of 2013, the Royal Society called a meeting solely to discuss the formation of the Moon. In this meeting, evection resonance and equilibration were both questioned as viable means of removing the deficiencies from giant impact models. The main concerns were that models were multi-staged and too complex. We present here initial impact conditions that produce an isotopically similar Earth–Moon system with correct angular momentum. This is done in a single-staged simulation. The initial parameters are straightforward and the results evolve solely from the impact. This was accomplished by colliding two roughly half-Earth-sized impactors, rotating in approximately the same plane in a high-energy, off-centered impact, where both impactors spin into the collision. 相似文献

Separate lead isotope analyses of leachate and residue fractions are applied to a broad spectrum of rocks commonly investigated in metallogenic studies. Resulting data highlight a systematic behavior of leachate and residue fractions with respect to lead isotope compositions, which essentially depends on the mineralogical composition of the rock. Granitoid and high-grade metamorphic rocks have residue compositions virtually identical to common lead. In contrast, low-grade metasedimentary rocks may have residue compositions swamped by radiogenic lead of leach-resistant zircons. Mafic magmatic rocks have residues that are often more radiogenic than leachates, depending on the ratio of leach-refractory zircons to common lead in the residual fraction of these rocks. Separate leachate and residue analyses of source rocks provide two lead isotope end members whose mixture may represent lead with the appropriate ore fluid composition. Our leaching experiments indicate that hot acid solutions (and by inference hydrothermal fluids) preferentially leach radiogenic lead from medium- to high-grade metamorphic and granitoid rocks, whereas they preferentially leach common lead from low-grade metasedimentary and mafic magmatic rocks. The method presented in this study provides a reliable alternative to other methods (i.e., age-correction of bulk-rock compositions) for the determination of the common lead signature of felsic to intermediate magmatic rocks. This may be preferable to age-corrected bulk-rock analyses, where ages to apply for corrections of bulk-rock data are not known or where moderately to highly altered rocks must be used. Case studies of orogenic gold and MVT districts of Peru (Pataz and San Vicente, respectively) show that separate leachate and residue lead isotope analyses carried out systematically on whole rocks allow a more thorough evaluation of metal source reservoirs than does the standard method of age-corrected or uncorrected bulk-rock analyses. 相似文献

Measured settlements of buildings on the weathered Keuper Marl appeared to be much smaller than calculated settlements, which
were based on stiffness modulus from standard oedometer tests. Therefore, both special triaxial K
0-tests and oedometer tests were carried out for an accurate determination of stiffness moduli. Modulus obtained in the triaxial
K
0-tests were at least two to three times the values obtained in the oedometer tests. To verify observations from the laboratory
tests, the loads and the settlements of two single footings on weathered Keuper mudstone have been measured during construction
of a building over 1 year. Also, a large scale footing load test with measurements of deformations were conducted on the weathered
Keuper mudstone. The measured settlements of the two single footings and the tested foundation were compared with the settlements
based on conventional calculations with moduli from oedometer tests and triaxial K
0-tests. Up to a foundation pressure of σv = 500 kN/m2 the calculated settlement based on E
S-modulus obtained from triaxial K
0-tests was found to correspond well to the measured deformation. For foundation pressure beyond 500 kN/m2, the foundation
response was highly non-linear and it could not be described any more with the linear-elastic model. Therefore the footing

A monthly mean climatology of the mixed layer depth (MLD) in the North Pacific has been produced by using Argo observations.
The optimum method and parameter for evaluating the MLD from the Argo data are statistically determined. The MLD and its properties
from each density profile were calculated with the method and parameter. The monthly mean climatology of the MLD is computed
on a 2° × 2° grid with more than 30 profiles for each grid. Two bands of deep mixed layer with more than 200 m depth are found
to the north and south of the Kuroshio Extension in the winter climatology, which cannot be reproduced in some previous climatologies.
Early shoaling of the winter mixed layer between 20–30°N, which has been pointed out by previous studies, is also well recognized.
A notable feature suggested by our climatology is that the deepest mixed layer tends to occur about one month before the mixed
layer density peaks in the middle latitudes, especially in the western region, while they tend to coincide with each other

Ecosystem service is an emerging concept that grows to be a hot research area in ecology. Spatially explicit ecosystem service
values are important for ecosystem service management. However, it is difficult to quantify ecosystem services. Remote sensing
provides images covering Earth surface, which by nature are spatially explicit. Thus, remote sensing can be useful for quantitative
assessment of ecosystem services. This paper reviews spatially explicit ecosystem service studies conducted in ecology and
remote sensing in order to find out how remote sensing can be used for ecosystem service assessment. Several important areas
considered include land cover, biodiversity, and carbon, water and soil related ecosystem services. We found that remote sensing
can be used for ecosystem service assessment in three different ways: direct monitoring, indirect monitoring, and combined
use with ecosystem models. Some plant and water related ecosystem services can be directly monitored by remote sensing. Most
commonly, remote sensing can provide surrogate information on plant and soil characteristics in an ecosystem. For ecosystem
process related ecosystem services, remote sensing can help measure spatially explicit parameters. We conclude that acquiring
good in-situ measurements and selecting appropriate remote sensor data in terms of resolution are critical for accurate assessment

Daily Arctic sea-ice motion maps during the winter seasons (December–March) from December 1988 to March 2003 derived from
NSCAT, QuikSCAT, SSM/I, and AMSRE data by a wavelet analysis method have been merged with those derived from buoy data. These
merged sea-ice motion data have been used to study the circulation regimes and winter-to-winter variability of Arctic sea-ice
motion. The relation between sea-ice motion and the pressure field in the Arctic Ocean was also studied by applying Principal
Component Analysis (PCA) to the monthly merged sea-ice motion data and the monthly pressure field data from IABP. The mean
Arctic sea-ice motion map of the 15 winter seasons has two distinct features: the Beaufort Gyre and a cyclonic circulation
system in the Eurasian Basin, which moves ice from the Laptev Sea to Fram Strait. The strengths and sizes of the two features
change from one winter season to another. Seasons with a strong or normal Beaufort Gyre alternate with seasons with a weak
or no Beaufort Gyre every one to three seasons. The principal components of the first two modes of PCA of the monthly sea-ice
motion are closely correlated with their counterparts of the monthly pressure field in the Arctic Ocean. The mode-one components
of these two anomalies alternate between anticyclonic and cyclonic circulation systems. The correlation between Arctic Oscillation
indexes and the principal components of the first mode of PCA of the monthly Arctic sea-ice motion is low but statistically

Effects of an ecological conservation and restoration project in the Three-River Source Region,China 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:3
The first-stage of an ecological conservation and restoration project in the Three-River Source Region (TRSR), China, has been in progress for eight years. However, because the ecological effects of this project remain unknown, decision making for future project implementation is hindered. Thus, in this study, we developed an index system to evaluate the effects of the ecological restoration project, by integrating field observations, remote sensing, and process-based models. Effects were assessed using trend analyses of ecosystem structures and services. Results showed positive trends in the TRSR since the beginning of the project, but not yet a return to the optima of the 1970s. Specifically, while continued degradation in grassland has been initially contained, results are still far from the desired objective, ‘grassland coverage increasing by an average of 20%–40%’. In contrast, wetlands and water bodies have generally been restored, while the water conservation and water supply capacity of watersheds have increased. Indeed, the volume of water conservation achieved in the project meets the objective of a 1.32 billion m3 increase. The effects of ecological restoration inside project regions was more significant than outside, and, in addition to climate change projects, we concluded that the implementation of ecological conservation and restoration projects has substantially contributed to vegetation restoration. Nevertheless, the degradation of grasslands has not been fundamentally reversed, and to date the project has not prevented increasing soil erosion. In sum, the effects and challenges of this first-stage project highlight the necessity of continuous and long-term ecosystem conservation efforts in this region. 相似文献

We have developed a two-dimensional dynamical model of asymmetric subduction integrated into the mantle convection without
imposed plate velocities. In this model we consider that weak oceanic crust behaves as a lubricator on the thrust fault at
the plate boundary. We introduce a rheological layer that depends on the history of the past fracture to simulate the effect
of the oceanic crust. The thickness of this layer is set to be as thin as the Earth's oceanic crust. To treat 1-kilometer
scale structure at the plate boundary in the 1000-kilometer scale mantle convection calculation, we introduce a new numerical
method to solve the hydrodynamic equations using a couple of uniform and nonuniform grids of control volumes. Using our developed
models, we have systematically investigated effects of basic rheological parameters that determine the deformation strength
of the lithosphere and the oceanic crust on the development of the subducted slab, with a focus on the plate motion controlling
mechanism. In our model the plate subduction is produced when the friction coefficient (0.004–0.008) of the modeled oceanic
crust and the maximum strength (400 MPa) of the lithosphere are in plausible range inferred from the observations on the plate
driving forces and the plate deformation, and the rheology experiments. In this range of the plate strength, yielding induces
the plate bending. In this case the speed of plate motion is controlled more by viscosity layering of the underlying mantle
than by the plate strength. To examine the setting of the overriding plate, we also consider the two end-member cases in which
the overriding plate is fixed or freely-movable. In the case of the freely-movable overriding plate, the trench motion considerably
changes the dip angle of the deep slab. Especially in the case with a shallow-angle plate boundary, retrograde slab motion

Results of a systematic paleomagnetic study are reported based on Late Carboniferous to Early Permian sedimentary rocks on the north slope of the Tanggula Mountains,in the northern Qiangtang terrane(NQT),Tibet,China.Data revealed that magnetic minerals in limestone samples from the Zarigen Formation(CP^z)are primarily composed of magnetite,while those in sandstone samples from the Nuoribagaribao Formation(Pnr)are dominated by hematite alone,or hematite and magnetite in combination.Progressive thermal,or alternating field,demagnetization allowed us to isolate a stable high temperature component(HTC)in 127 specimens from 16 sites which successfully passed the conglomerate test,consistent with primary remnance.The tilt-corrected mean direction for Late Carboniferous to Early Permian rocks in the northern Qiangtang terrane is D_s=30.2°,I_s=-40.9°,k_s=269.0,a_(95)=2.3°,N=16,which yields a corresponding paleomagnetic pole at 25.7°N,241.5°E(dp/dm=2.8°/1.7°),and a paleolatitude of 23.4°S.Our results,together with previously reported paleomagnetic data,indicate that:(1)the NQT in Tibet,China,was located at a low latitude in the southern hemisphere,and may have belonged to the northern margin of Gondwana during the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian;(2)the Paleo-Tethys Ocean was large during the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian,and(3)the NQT subsequently moved rapidly northwards,perhaps related to the fact that the Paleo-Tethys Ocean was rapidly contracting from the Late Permian to Late Triassic while the Bangong Lake-Nujiang Ocean,the northern branch of the Neo-Tethys Ocean,expanded rapidly during this time. 相似文献

Six new chrysophycean stomatocysts ornamented with reticulum were illustrated based on SEM observation. They were described following the guidelines of the International Statospore Working Group (ISWG). All samples were collected from the Great Xing’an Mountains, China. Their taxonomic characteristics and habitats were described to provide new information on the biodiversity of chrysophycean stomatocysts.
