A complex history of Cenozoic vertical movements in the Faroe region has been revealed from interpretation of geophysical and geological data, mainly offshore reflection seismic data, side-scan images, shallow cores, and onshore mapping. The history comprises several phases of tectonic disturbances observed at different scales. On the eastern margin of the Faroe Platform a late Eocene–early Oligocene phase of doming of the Faroe Platform has caused a postdepositional tilting of Eocene strata along the southern margin of the platform; a mid-Miocene phase of compressional tectonics is evidenced on seismic transects as gentle anticlines and associated reverse faults; and possible Pliocene uplift of the Faroe Islands is indicated by a progradational wedge of sediments deposited on the eastern Faroe Platform. At the continental margin/slope north of the Faroe Platform, reflection seismic data imaging the postbasalt sedimentary strata indicate three distinct tectonic events phases in the Eocene–Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene, respectively. In contrast to the Faroe Platform the Faroe–Shetland Channel was characterised by more or less continuous subsidence dominated throughout the Cenozoic. During the Eocene, sediments deposited in the Faroe–Shetland Channel was mostly derived from a source area on the British shelf.  相似文献

With few exceptions, geochemical models of igneous differentiation have assumed that crystals form homogeneously throughout the cooling magma chamber. This is in spite of field evidence and physical models suggesting for natural systems, that heat loss, and thus most crystallization, occurs primarily along the walls and roof of magma chambers. Such systems would produce aphyric, evolved composition lavas. Existing models of boundary layer crystal fractionation suggest that the products of such a process are significantly different from the products of homogeneous crystallization. To investigate this process further, we have developed a model using a numerical approach to boundary layer crystal fractionation based on new phase equilibria and trace element constraints. In addition to olivine, augite and plagioclase, this new model includes the ability to calculate the effects of oxide (magnetite and ilmenite), apatite and low-Ca pyroxene fractionation. This is critical if we are to effectively evaluate the geochemical signature of boundary layer fractionation. This is because the products of boundary layer fractionation are most different from homogeneous fractionation for high degrees of crystallization in the solidification zone. These are the same conditions where oxides, low-Ca pyroxene and apatite are saturated in most natural, differentiated mafic systems. The results of this model suggest that boundary layer fractionation can help to explain such phenomena as phantom crystallization, variation in incompatible element ratios, and the decoupling of major and trace element systematics. In addition, many of the geochemical patterns that we use to distinguish between the products of low pressure and high pressure differentiation are obscured by the fact that the liquid line of descent can be controlled by the removal of phases not in equilibrium with the entire magma chamber.  相似文献

We report observations of a noctilucent cloud (NLC) over central Alaska by a ground-based lidar and camera on the night of 9–10 August 2005. The lidar at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Chatanika (65°N, 147°W) measured a maximum integrated backscatter coefficient of 2.4×10?6 sr?1 with a peak backscatter coefficient of 2.6×10?9 m?1 sr?1 corresponding to an aerosol backscatter ratio of 120 at an altitude of 82.1 km. The camera at Donnelly Dome, 168 km southeast of PFRR, recorded an extensive NLC display across the sky with distinct filamentary features corresponding to wave structures measured by the lidar. The occurrence of the maximum integrated backscatter coefficient corresponded to the passage of a bright cloud band to the southwest over PFRR. The camera observations indicate that the cloud band had a horizontal width of 50 km and a length of 150 km. The horizontal scale of the cloud band was confirmed by medium-frequency radar wind measurements that reported mesopause region winds of 30 m/s to the southwest during the period when the cloud band passed over PFRR. Comparison of these measurements with current NLC microphysical models suggests a lower bound on the water vapor mixing ratio at 83 km of 7–9 ppmv and a cloud ice mass of 1.5–1.8×103 kg. Satellite measurements show that this NLC display occurred during a burst of cloud activity that began on 5 August and lasted for 10 days. This cloud appeared 10 days after a launch of the space shuttle. We discuss the appearance of NLCs in August over several years at this lower polar latitude site in terms of planetary wave activity and space shuttle launches.  相似文献

We present the first technique to obtain precise and accurate vanadium (V) stable isotope compositions by chemical isolation and multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (MC‐ICP‐MS). Separation of V from matrix elements was achieved via five separate ion exchange columns. The procedure quantitatively removed Ti and Cr, which contain direct isobaric interferences on the minor isotope 50V. Isotope compositions were determined using a conventional standard solution‐sample bracketing technique. The V isotope composition for an in‐house secondary standard solution from BDH Chemicals was δ51V = ?1.19 ± 0.12‰ (2s, n = 600), measured as the per mil deviation relative to the composition of a widely available Specpure Alfa Aesar (AA) vanadium solution. This represents an improvement in measurement precision on previous techniques of almost two orders of magnitude. The effects of adding Cr, Ti and S to standard solutions were explored to determine the robustness of protocols. Only very low levels of these elements could be tolerated to obtain precise and accurate isotope compositions and was achieved with the chemical purification procedure. Standard solutions from AA and BDH processed as unknowns through the entire chemical separation and measurement protocols returned 100% yields and the same isotopic compositions as those of unprocessed standard solutions.  相似文献

Previous experiments by Raleigh et al. (1971) have shown that at strain rates of 10−2.sec−1 to 10−7.sec−1 only slip occurs in dry enstatite at temperatures above 1300°C and 1000°C, respectively.The present experiments have been conducted on polycrystalline enstatite under wet conditions in this regime where enstatite only slips, polygonizes and recrystallizes. Slip occurs throughout the whole regime on the system (100)[001] and at strains greater than 40% the system (010)[001] is observed. Polygonization and intragranular recrystallization begin at about 1300°C and 10−4.sec−1 and the orientation of these neoblasts is host-controlled. At lower strain rates intergranular neoblasts develop and their fabric is one of [100] maximum parallel with σ1 and [010] and [001] girdles in the σ2 = σ3 plane, similar to those in natural enstatite tectonites.Dislocation substructures of experimentally deformed enstatite have been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The samples were deformed within the field in which slip polygonization and recrystallization are the dominant deformation mechanisms. Samples within this regime have microstructures that are characterized by stacking faults and partial dislocations. Under the conditions of steady-state flow in olivine, these microstructures inhibit the operation of recovery mechanisms in enstatite.Other samples deformed within the polygonization and recrystallization field have microstructures that confirm the optical observations of intragranular and intergranular growth of neoblasts. It is suggested that the former result from strain-induced tilt of subrains, whereas the latter may result from bulge nucleation into adjacent subgrains.Mechanical data from constant strain-rate experiments at steady state, stress relaxation and temperature-differential creep tests are best fit to a power-law creep equation with the stress exponent, n~3 and the apparent activation energy for creep, Q~65 kcal/mole. Extrapolation of this equation to a representative natural geologic strain rate of 10−4. sec−1, over the temperature interval 1000–2000°C, gives an effective viscosity range of 1020–1018 poise and stresses in the range of 7-0.1 bar, respectively. Comparison with corrected wet-olivine mechanical data (Carter, 1976) over the same environment indicates that olivine is consistently the weaker of the two minerals and will recrystallize whilst enstatite will only slip and kink, thus accounting for the different habits of olivine and enstatite in ultramafic tectonites.  相似文献

Ostracods are a common microfaunal element of the Kimmeridgian of the Jura Mountains in NW Switzerland. The stratigraphical subdivision within the Kimmeridgian can as clearly be inferred from ostracods as it is the case from the ammonite biozonation. This proves the utiliy of the ostracod biozonation, especially where ammonites are not available or rare. The ostracod-bearing layers of the sequence under study (middle part of the Reuchenette Formation = Banné Member, Courtedoux Member and Lower Virgula Marls) have been deposited in waters with highly brackish to marine salinities (high in the pliohaline range to—predominanttly—brachyhaline according to the Venice System, Oertli 1964). From the base of the section (base of the Banné Member, high brachyhaline in average), salinities slowly decreased, with lowest salinities in the lower dinosaur track levels of Courtedoux Member (high pliohaline on average). They then increased again to higher salinities (high brachyhaline on average) above the upper dinosaur track levels of the Courtedoux Member and the Lower Virgula Marls (lowermost A. eudoxus Zone). These trends perfectly correlate with the increased occurence of ammonites above the upper dinosaur track levels. In terms of Kimmeridgian ostracod palaeobiogeography, the fauna of the NW Swiss Jura Mountains described in this work is most similar to the Aquitan and Paris Basins, a little less to Northern Germany, and even less (with not even half of the species in common) to Southern Germany. The NW Swiss Jura Mountains still belong to a largely boreally influenced “Western and Central European subprovince”, whereas Southern Germany (though located more to the north) was subjected to an enhanced tethyan influence.  相似文献

In october 1990 an automatic weather station was established at the Arctic Station (65° 15', 53°31'W), Qeqertarsuaq (Godhavn), Central West Greenland. The Station register parameters each 20 minutes, and the paramters have been described in an earlier paper in this journal by Nielsen et al.(1995). The present paper summarizes meteorological parameters during 1999.

During a field campaign in 1999, woody remains from Salix glauca were found on a nunatak, 515 m. a.s.l. on the Mittivakkat Glacier, South East Greenland. Radio carbon dating determined the age of a wood sample to AD 640. Together with analyses of macroscopic botanical remains and insect rests in peaty material found nearby, these results indicate, that a warmer climate prevailed near the glacier around AD 600. These findings are in accordance with temperature records based on studies of ice cores from the Greenland Ice sheet.  相似文献

In 1985 and 1986 monthly surveys of sediment volumes were carried out on a sandy beach and its nearshore platform at the north coast of Zealand. Both winters in the research period had temperatures below average, and consequently abundant sea ice formations. ‘Ice winters’ in open Danish waters occur statistically about 1/3 of the winters. The appearance of sea ice resulted in marked loss of sediment from the whole littoral zone, but by far the largest net erosion could be detected on the nearshore plane. An important factor is assumed to be the interaction of waves with the icefoot and ice pile-ups. For the beach itself, ice-glazing of the beach surface and interstitial frost in the foreshore sediments caused wave erosion within and just off the swash zone due to variations of the percolation parameter. This dynamic was observed during both the freeze-up and thaw-up periods. On the backshore, wind-derived forms characterized the winter beach, but here the net sediment budget was less affected.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The article focuses on Norwegian pupils’ negotiations of meaning in images of social inequality in A World at Stake, a circulating museum exhibition in Denmark, Norway and Sweden that addressed the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals. More specifically, the article focuses on the pupils’ engagement with two images in the exhibition. By investigating how the pupils negotiated the meaning of those images, the authors demonstrate some of the ways in which the pupils’ reported engagement and responses had the potential to foster critical debate relating to the North–South divide in terms of poverty and affluence. Drawing on critical visual methodology, the authors discuss their findings of how the pupils used their experiences to make sense of the images, situate their social identities within a globally and socially unjust world, and, by implication, the potential for two images to inspire them to reflect on their roles and responsibilities in the wider world. The authors conclude that although the pupils’ social identities to varying degrees were mobilized, AWAS spurred engagement and reflections that helped the authors to understand how the pupils saw themselves, their roles and their responsibilities beyond the Global North.  相似文献

Land‐terminating parts of the west Greenland ice sheet have exhibited highly dynamic meltwater regimes over the last few decades including episodes of extremely intense runoff driven by ice surface ablation, ponding of meltwater in an increasing number and size of lakes, and sudden outburst floods, or ‘jökulhlaups’, from these lakes. However, whether this meltwater runoff regime is unusual in a Holocene context has not been questioned. This study assembled high‐resolution topographical data, geological and landcover data, and produced a glacial geomorphological map covering ~1200 km2. Digital analysis of the landforms reveals a mid‐Holocene land‐terminating ice margin that was predominantly cold‐based. This ice margin underwent sustained active retreat but with multiple minor advances. Over c. 1000 years meltwater runoff became impounded within numerous and extensive proglacial lakes and there were temporary connections between some of these lakes via spillways. The ice‐dams of some of these lakes had several quasi‐stable thicknesses. Meltwater was apparently predominantly from supraglacial sources although some distributary palaeochannel networks and some larger bedrock palaeochannels most likely relate to mid‐Holocene subglacial hydrology. In comparison to the geomorphological record at other Northern Hemisphere ice‐sheet margins the depositional landforms in this study area are few in number and variety and small in scale, most likely due to a restricted sediment supply. They include perched fans and deltas and perched braidplain terraces. Overall, meltwater sourcing, routing and the proglacial runoff regime during the mid‐Holocene in this land‐terminating part of the ice sheet was spatiotemporally variable, but in a manner very similar to that of the present day.  相似文献
