Abstract A multi-offset hydrophone vertical seismic profiling (VSP) experiment was done in a 747 m deep borehole at Nojima Hirabayashi, Hyogo prefecture, Japan. The borehole was drilled to penetrate the Nojima Fault, which was active in the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake. The purpose of the hydrophone VSP is to detect subsurface permeable fractures and permeable zones and, in the present case, to estimate the permeability of the Nojima Fault. The analysis was based on a model by which tube waves are generated when incident P-waves compress the permeable fractures (or permeable zones) intersecting the borehole and a fluid in the fracture is injected into the borehole. Permeable fractures (or permeable zones) are detected at the depths of tube wave generation, and fracture permeability is calculated from the amplitude ratio of tube wave to incident P-wave. Several generations of tube waves were detected from the VSP sections. Distinct tube waves were generated at depths of the fault zone that are characterized by altered and deformed granodiorite with a fault gouge, suggesting that permeable fractures and permeable zones exist in the fault zone. Tube wave analysis shows that the permeability of the fault gouge from 624 m to 625 m is estimated to be approximately 2 × 10−12 m2.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the cyclic shear behaviour of steel box girders was conducted on one‐quarter scale models, comprising of two specimens with longitudinally unstiffened webs and one specimen with longitudinally stiffened webs. All the specimens exhibited ductile behaviour. The tests evidenced significant increases in the shear strength and energy dissipation capacity regarding the use of thicker webs and the provision of longitudinal web stiffeners. The web stiffeners also enhanced the stable hysteresis behaviour without substantial degradation in the energy dissipation due to pinching. The test results are compared with the shear behaviour simulated by inelastic large deformation analysis incorporated with a sophisticated constitutive model. The hysteresis behaviour, peak cyclic shear stresses, energy dissipation, and deformation shapes of the three specimens are satisfactorily predicted by the analysis. The respiration rates of copepod larvae and a ciliate (Placus sp.) from a tropical sea were measured with an oxygen electrode method. The general range of body size of these animals was 40–161m (diameter equivalent to a sphere), and the respiration rate measured was 0.00076–0.00176l O2 (animal)–1h–1 (or 2.02–9.05l O2 (mg wet weight)–1h–1) at 25.5–29.2C. There was no marked difference observed between the respiration rates of copepod larvae and the ciliate. The respiration rates obtained here are relatively higher than the rates of other similar sized protozoans found in the literature, but lower than the rate extrapolated from larger planktonic copepods in tropical seas.The present results and other information available on microzooplankton biomass suggest that microzooplankton respiration is of near equal importance to that of net zooplankton in the study of energy flow through tropical, pelagic ecosystems.  相似文献

Kerogen was isolated from a marine sediment from Tanner Basin, offshore California. Samples of the kerogen were heated under an inert atmosphere at various temperatures and times. The heated and unheated kerogens were subjected to alkaline potassium permanganate oxidation followed by GC/ MS analysis of the products. The kerogens yielded primarily aliphatic C2–C14 α,ω-dicarboxylic acids and benzene mono-to-pentacarboxylic acids. Yields of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids from kerogen decreased with increasing thermal alteration. Yields of benzenecarboxylic acids increased steadily with increasing thermal alteration. The data support the concept that thermal maturation during natural burial of this type of kerogen results in the generation of aliphatic hydrocarbons from an increasingly aromatic residue.  相似文献

Two short geomagnetic episodes in the middle Matuyama epoch have been identified within thin (4.3-mm) sections of two deep-sea calcareous sediment cores taken in the western equatorial Pacific. Both cores are correlated by magnetostratigraphic and micropaleontological methods. Magnetic stability and paleomagnetic reliability are tested by alternating field demagnetization of natural remanent magnetization as well as by the ratios of intensities of anhysteretic remanent magnetization to those of saturation isothermal remanent magnetization. One episode is dated to be 1.06 m.y. BP. The other is identified to be about 1.94 m.y. BP, which is presumably in agreement with the Reunion event. Both episodes seem to be accompanied by conspicuous drops in field intensity. Possible correlation of field intensity with biological productivity in the ocean is also postulated from the present paleomagnetic results.  相似文献

Work done initially with Y. Ogura and later by the present author was reviewed, with special emphasis on physical concepts in a cloud model. The present paper consists of two parts: a warm rain study and a graupel cloud model. The process of continuous improvement on physical ideas taken to formulate warm rain are described in the first part of this paper. It is shown that the number concentration of cloud droplets is the most sensitive factor in determining rainfall, and that there is a critical drop size distribution for initiation of rain. The second part describes a graupel cloud model and shows that graupel formation is the mechanism most likely to lead to precipitation from continental shallow convective clouds.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to estimate heaving pressures of saturated soil partially frozen in a closed system. Temperatures at both ends of a specimen were kept constant, i.e., positive at the top and negative at the bottom. When the overburden pressure P was maintained at a constant value, the pore-water pressure Pw, which showed a certain value before freezing, decreased gradually as freezing progressed, finally attaining a specific value, whereafter the specimen ceased taking water into it. The pressure difference between P and Pw, at this stage was defined as the upper limit of heaving pressure σu, which evidently depended on the temperature θc of the cooling end, in accordance with the relation: σu = −11.4 θc (kg/cm2)

It corresponds to the modified Clausius-Clapeyron's formula, which gives the freezingpoint depression of an ice—water system, where the pressure acting on the ice differs from that on the water. This is the same as the value obtained by Radd and Oertle (1973). It is considered, however, that, when θc lowers, the value of θu reaches finally a constant value smaller than the one obtained by the above equation. Denoted by σu max, it was defined as a maximum heaving pressure. The value of σu max depended on soil type.  相似文献
