Designing appropriate post-disaster emergency and recovery housing policies requires accurate estimation of the indirect or
“flow” loss generated by the involuntary displacement of households to housing other than their own destroyed homes. We employed
the stated choice method to measure residence choice following a hypothetical disaster in a procedure developed to estimate
flow loss due to house destruction. This method was applied to households in the city of Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture to
estimate flow loss for a range of residence types and residence attributes following relocation. The results revealed that
the relocation residence type itself (such as a shelter, temporary dwelling, rental housing, or one’s own home) had a substantial
effect on residence choice. Regarding residence attributes, residential expenses such as rent, housing loans, and spaciousness
had a significant effect on residence choice. Moreover, we found that respondents placed a very high value on living in their
own home compared with other residence types, indicating that subsidizing the prompt repair and rebuilding of private homes
is likely to be an effective recovery support policy. In addition, a cost–benefit analysis of our results revealed that rent
subsidies are more efficient than the construction of public housing as a means of financially assisting economically constrained

The present study developed a high-quality climatological dataset for the Indian Ocean - the Indian Ocean HydroBase (IOHB) - from a combined dataset including the World Ocean Database 1998 version 2 (WOD98v2). Methods are similar to those used by previous studies for other oceans. Japanese data for the IOHB originated from the Japanese datasets MIRC (Marine Information Research Center) Ocean Dataset 2001 and Far Seas Collection; these datasets contain more Japanese observations than WOD98v2. Water mass properties in the IOHB climatology are consistent with previous studies. Seasonal patterns of properties near the sea surface are well reproduced, and deep-layer properties are consistent with the Reid-Mantyla climatology that is derived from high-quality observations. The isopycnal climatology of the IOHB differs from the World Ocean Atlas 2001 (WOA01) along the fronts associated with the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The WOA01 shows a warm and saline intermediate water intrusion from South Africa to the east along the northern edge of the front. Such an intrusion is absent in IOHB where less saline intermediate water extends continuously northward from the southern ocean. The WOA01 shows a continuous belt of low potential vorticity along the ACC. This feature is less distinct in the IOHB climatology and in the Reid-Mantyla climatology. The IOHB consists of a 1° × 1° gridded climatology and the datasets of raw and quality-controlled hydrographic stations. Analyses of gallium content were made by the fluorometric method on 57 samples of seaweeds which were composed of 30 species. As the result of it, the gallium content was found ranging from 0.02 to 0.64g g–1 and the average was 0.14g g–1 in the dried seaweeds.Generally, the gallium content in seaweeds had a close relationship to the aluminium and iron contents. The average weight ratio of Ga/Al was 3.8×10–4 and one of Ga/Fe was 4.0×10–4. The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is the main component of intraseasonal variability of the tropical convection, with clear
climatic impacts at an almost-global scale. Based on satellite observations, it is shown that there are two types of austral-summer
MJO events (broadly defined as 30–120 days convective variability with eastward propagation of about 5 m/s). Equatorial MJO
events have a period of 30–50 days and tend to be symmetric about the equator, whereas MJO events centered near 8°S tend to
have a longer period of 55–100 days. The lower-frequency variability is associated with a strong upper-ocean response, having
a clear signature in both sea surface temperature and its diurnal cycle. These two MJO types have different interannual variations,
and are modulated by the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). Following a negative IOD event, the lower-frequency southern MJO variability
increases, while the higher-frequency equatorial MJO strongly diminishes. We propose two possible explanations for this change
in properties of the MJO. One possibility is that changes in the background atmospheric circulation after an IOD favour the
development of the low-frequency MJO. The other possibility is that the shallower thermocline ridge and mixed layer depth,
by enhancing SST intraseasonal variability and thus ocean–atmosphere coupling in the southwest Indian Ocean (the breeding

Diurnal variation in the atmospheric CO2 concentration and the carbon isotopic composition (Δ14 C and δ13 C) was measured in a forest in an urban area on 9 February 1999. The carbon isotope approach used in the present study differentiated between the quantitative contributions from anthropogenic and biogenic CO2 sources in the urban atmosphere. The anthropogenic (fossil fuel) and biogenic (soil respiration) contributions was estimated, and they ranged from 1 to 16% and from 2 to 8% of the total atmospheric CO2 . The diurnal variation of the anthropogenic CO2 was the major cause of the total atmospheric CO2 variation, while the biogenic CO2 remained relatively constant throughout the day. Estimating the contribution of soil respired CO2 provided the mean residence time of soil respired CO2 within the forest atmosphere. 相似文献

The evolution of an isolated meso-scale eddy near a coast is studied numerically. In particular, it is found that the translation speed of the adjusted eddy is estimated well by the mutual induction mechanism adapted to a rotating stratified fluid. The distribution and characteristics of Subtropical Mode Water (STMW) south of Honshu, the main island of Japan, were investigated using CTD, XBT, and dissolved oxygen data taken by the research vessels in the spring of 1988 and 1989. A comparatively low inventory of STMW was shown in spring 1988 during the large-meander period of the Kuroshio south of Honshu, while in spring 1989 during the non-large-meander period, the observation showed a considerable inventory of STMW which had outcropped east of 140°E in the preceding winter. These observations, together with published temperature maps, surface current charts, time series of vertical temperature profiles along 140°E, and wintertime Monsoon Index consistently support the climatology of the STMW circulation recently presented by the authors. That is, the change of the Kuroshio Countercurrent associated with the large meander of the Kuroshio most likely cuts off the westward/southwestward advection of STMW from its formation area east of 140°E. 相似文献
