Apatite fission-track (FT) ages and track length distributions are important sources of information about the thermal histories of rocks. Recent advances in the understanding of track annealing in apatite provide a solution to the forward problem of predicting FT ages and track length distributions that result from a given thermal history. In this paper, a method is presented to address the inverse problem—estimation of the thermal history from FT data. The inverse method uses an iterative approach (the downhill simplex) to systematically modify a starting thermal history to achieve satisfactory statistical agreement between the predicted and observed FT age and track length distribution. However, because of analytical uncertainties, a unique thermal history does not exist. Monte Carlo simulations are used to take into account the uncertainties in the data and yield a spectrum of possible thermal histories. The results are based on the isothermal annealing model of Laslett et al. ([1], Chem. Geol. Isot. Geosci. Sect., Vol. 65) but because the method uses forward predictions and not an analytical formula specific to a single annealing model, alternative annealing models could be used within the same framework. This method is an improvement in interpreting fission-track data because the range of thermal histories permitted by the data can be evaluated.To demonstrate the method, it is applied to several sets of test data created by forward modeling of idealized thermal histories. The results show that the age at which the sample cooled through its closure temperature and the most general features of the thermal history are revealed. However, data from partially annealed samples have wide spectra that reflect large uncertainties in the form of the thermal history. For such samples, FT data alone are not likely to provide strong tests of geologic hypotheses. Conversely, geologic information may play a crucial role in constraining the thermal history spectrum. In application to uplift-related cooling, this inverse method can provide much more realistic assessments of the cooling rate and its uncertainty than are otherwise possible.  相似文献

An integrated instructional program for cartography and geographic information systems in the Department of Geography at the University of Washington develops systematically with the use of a conceptual framework that consists of a matrix of instructional topics cross-listed by courses. Values in the matrix cells represent the depth of treatment for each topic within a course. Large samples of field horizontal branch (FHB) stars make excellent tracers of the Galactic halo; by studying their kinematics, one can infer important physical properties of our Galaxy. Here we present the results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of 530 FHB stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. The stars have a mean distance of ∼7 kpc and thus probe the inner parts of the Milky Way halo. We measure radial velocities from the spectra in order to test the model of Sommer-Larsen et al., who suggested that the velocity ellipsoid of the halo changes from radially dominated orbits to tangentially dominated orbits as one proceeds from the inner to the outer halo. We find that the present data are unable to discriminate between this model and a more simple isothermal ellipsoid; we suggest that additional observations towards the Galactic Centre might help to differentiate them.  相似文献

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Turkish General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Müdürlügü, MTA) are working together to provide a better understanding of the chemical properties of Turkish coals from major Turkish lignite producing areas.The coals in Turkey are generally low rank (lignite or subbituminous) formed in several different depositional environments at different geologic times and have differing chemical properties. Eocene coals are limited to northern Turkey; Oligocene coals, found in the Thrace Basins of northwestern Turkey, are intercalated with marine sediments; Miocene coals are generally located in Western Turkey. The coal deposits, which have limnic characteristics, have relatively abundant reserves. Pliocene–Pleistocene coals are found in the eastern part of Turkey. Most of these coals have low calorific values, high moisture, and high ash contents.Analysis of 143 coal channel samples (most are lignite and subbituminous in rank, but a few are bituminous and one is anthracitic in rank) has been completed for up to 54 elements and other coal properties using a variety of analytical techniques, including inductively coupled plasma emission and mass spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, and various single element techniques and ASTM standard procedures. Many of these coals have elemental concentrations similar to U.S. lignites found in the Gulf Coast and Fort Union regions. However, maximum or mean concentrations of B, Cr, Cs, Ni, As, Br, Sb, Cs, and U in Turkey are higher than the corresponding maximum or mean values found in either the Fort Union or Gulf Coast regions.  相似文献

Causal links that connect Holocene high stands of Lake Superior with dune building, stream damming and diversion and reservoir impoundment and infilling are inferred from a multidisciplinary investigation of a small watershed along the SE shore of Lake Superior. Radiocarbon ages of wood fragments from in-place stumps and soil O horizons, recovered from the bottom of 300-ha Grand Sable Lake, suggest that the near-shore inland lake was formed during multiple episodes of late Holocene dune damming of ancestral Sable Creek. Forest drownings at 3000, 1530, and 300 cal. years BP are highly correlated with local soil burial events that occurred during high stands of Lake Superior. During these and earlier events, Sable Creek was diverted onto eastward-graded late Pleistocene meltwater terraces. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) reveals the early Holocene valley of Sable Creek (now filled) and its constituent sedimentary structures. Near-planar paleosols, identified with GPR, suggest two repeating modes of landscape evolution mediated by levels of Lake Superior. High lake stands drove stream damming, reservoir impoundment, and eolian infilling of impoundments. Falling Lake Superior levels brought decreased sand supply to dune dams and lowered stream base level. These latter factors promoted stream piracy, breaching of dune dams, and aerial exposure and forestation of infilled lakebeds. The bathymetry of Grand Sable Lake suggests that its shoreline configuration and depth varied in response to events of dune damming and subsequent dam breaching. The interrelated late Holocene events apparent in this study area suggest that variations in lake level have imposed complex hydrologic and geomorphic signatures on upper Great Lakes coasts.  相似文献

The dilution attenuation factor (DAF) is a quantity used to relate the concentration of leachate leaving a source zone (e.g., landfill, impoundment, or contaminated soils) to its impact on down-gradient ground water quality. The DAF is of importance because it plays a key role in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s methodologies for developing soil cleanup goals and for managing hazardous wastes. In this work, a simplistic graphically-based approach for determining site-specific and generic DAFs was developed. In this case the DAF is based on time-and vertically-averaged concentrations along the plume centerline, and the mathematical framework employs well-known analytical and semianalytical solutions for dissolved contaminant transport. Finite sources with a range of decay characteristics are allowed for. One unique feature of this work is that the graphical approach allows for varying levels of sitespecificity, and thus can be used when one has a little, or a lot, of site-specific information. The graphs visually indicate the sensitivity to various parameters, which is valuable information not easily gleaned from most numerical software simulators. This approach is, however, not applicable to very complex hydrogeologic settings (e.g., fractured geology), or to ground water flows that cannot be reasonably approximated as one-dimensional.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions containing Ni(II) and a series of structurally related carboxylic acids were analyzed using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and Ni K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). XAFS spectra were also collected for solutions containing Ni2+ and chelating ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA)) as well as soil fulvic acid. Limited spectral changes are observed for aqueous Ni(II) complexes with monocarboxylates (formate, acetate) and long-chain polycarboxylates (succinate, tricarballylate), where individual donor groups are separated by multiple bridging methylene groups. These spectral changes indicate weak interactions between Ni(II) and carboxylates, and the trends are similar to some earlier reports for crystalline Ni(II)-acetate solids, for which X-ray crystallography studies have indicated monodentate Ni(II)-carboxylate coordination. Nonetheless, electrostatic or outer-sphere coordination cannot be ruled out for these complexes. However, spectral changes observed for short-chain dicarboxylates (oxalate, malonate) and carboxylates that contain an alcohol donor group adjacent to one of the carboxylate groups (lactate, malate, citrate) demonstrate inner-sphere metal coordination by multiple donor groups. XAFS spectral fits of Ni(II) solutions containing soil fulvic acid are consistent with inner-sphere Ni(II) coordination by one or more carboxylate groups, but spectra are noisy and outer-sphere modes of coordination cannot be ruled out. These molecular studies refine our understanding of the interactions between carboxylates and weakly complexing divalent transition metals, such as Ni(II).  相似文献

The distribution and quantity of organic sulfur and iron sulfur species were determined in the Holocene sediments from Mud Lake, Florida. The sediments of this shallow, sinkhole lake are characterized by high sulfur and organic carbon contents as well as active sulfate reduction. They record a shift from a basal peat (below 2 m) comprised of water lily-dominated organic matter to the present cyanobacterial/algal-dominated lake deposit (upper 1 m). This shift in depositional environment and subsequent organic matter source was accompanied by variation in the amount of reactive iron delivered to the sediments, which in turn influenced the type and extent of organic matter sulfurization. Extractable intramolecular organic sulfur is principally found as C25 highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) thiolanes. Extractable polysulfide-linked lipids, determined by selective chemical cleavage with MeLi/MeI and analyzed as methylthioethers (MTE), are dominated by n-alkanes with sulfur attachments at position 1 and 2, as well as lower amounts of C25 HBI-MTE. The δ13C values and carbon-chain length distribution of both series of n-alkylMTE indicate that they are derived from distinct biological precursors. Among the n-alkylMTE with sulfur attachment at position 1 there are three homologous series: one saturated and two with both cis and trans enethiol isomers. The identification of the enethiol in the sulfur-linked macromolecules indicates that n-alkylaldehydes are precursors lipids. The intervals of high concentration of bulk organic sulfur and sulfurized lipids coincide with the intervals of high mineral sulfur content (acid volatile sulfide and chromium reducible sulfur). We suggest that the main control on the enhanced addition of sulfur to the organic matter in Mud Lake was the increased formation of polysulfides during the reduction of iron hydroxides and the subsequent reaction of those polysulfides with mildly oxidized sedimentary organic matter.  相似文献
