This editorial introduction to the themed issue is divided into four parts. We begin with outlining five reasons for more sustained attention to ageing and old age in human geography and go onto discuss two major challenges for geographical inquiry into ageing and later life. One of these is examining embodiment in ways that keep both its social/cultural aspects and its biological/physiological dimensions in sharp focus; the other concerns the challenge of considering time, or rather spatiotemporality, in all its facets. With regard to the latter we argue that the life-course concept can be helpful in this regard, especially if attention is paid to transitions as well as to slow, difficult-to-identify forms of change and if life-courses are understood in terms of folds. Thinking in these terms opens up a perspective according to which ageing and space can be analysed as entwined becomings. We conclude by positioning the contributions in this issue vis-à-vis the perspective developed in this piece.  相似文献

The Corallian limestone of northern England (UK) is widely exploited for water supplies and exhibits the karstic phenomena of sinking rivers, conduit development and groundwater velocities of several kilometres per day. To test a number of model-derived source protection zones and elucidate contaminant transport mechanisms in the aquifer, three tracer tests were conducted from a set of swallow-holes draining the River Derwent toward public water supply wells in the eastern part of the aquifer. Tracers used included: Enterobacter cloacae (bacteriophage), Photine C (optical brightener), sodium fluorescein (fluorescent dye) and sulphur hexafluoride (dissolved gas), the varying properties of which make them suitable analogues for different types of potential contaminant. Observed tracer transport times and arrival patterns indicate that tracer transport occurs through karstic channels embedded in a network of primary fissures which exert control over tracer concentrations once initial tracer plumes have passed. A dipole flow system is observed between the swallow-holes and the closest abstraction well, whilst previously modelled source protection zones do not accurately reflect either groundwater velocity or those areas of the aquifer supplying the wells. These findings imply that managing such aquifers for potential contamination should rely upon empirical tracer evidence for source-protection zone modelling.  相似文献

Rates of lightning mortality in communities on the western shore of Lake Malawi are higher than any other reported rate in the world: 419 strike victims per million people per annum and 84 deaths per million per annum. To document the background to this phenomenon, we conducted comprehensive household interviews with surviving victims and witnesses of every case of lightning strike in seven administrative areas around Nkhata Bay, Malawi. We find that the consequential lightning strikes are significantly more common in the rainy season and during the morning. Among those victims struck by lightning, there is an average ratio of approximately one death to four injuries, which is substantially higher than the commonly accepted ratio of 1:10. Children and adults are at equal risk of being struck. If struck, the probability of death is greater when the victim is outside in the open or outside under cover than indoors under a tin or thatched roof, but is unaffected by different kinds of footwear or whether it is raining. Reported explanations for strikes often center on witchcraft or other forms of social conflict. Our findings extend the study of consequential lightning strikes in the developing world and highlight cultural factors associated with this hazard. We end with recommendations for reducing the risk of lightning for rural populations.  相似文献

Planetary aurora display the dynamic behavior of the plasma gas surrounding a planet. The outer planetary aurora are most often observed in the ultraviolet (UV) and the infrared (IR) wavelengths. How the emissions in these different wavelengths are connected with the background physical conditions are not yet well understood. Here we investigate the sensitivity of UV and IR emissions to the incident precipitating auroral electrons and the background atmospheric temperature, and compare the results obtained for Jupiter and Saturn. We develop a model which estimates UV and IR emission rates accounting for UV absorption by hydrocarbons, ion chemistry, and non-LTE effects. Parameterization equations are applied to estimate the ionization and excitation profiles in the H2 atmosphere caused by auroral electron precipitation. The dependences of UV and IR emissions on electron flux are found to be similar at Jupiter and Saturn. However, the dependences of the emissions on electron energy are different at the two planets, especially for low energy (<10 keV) electrons; the UV and IR emissions both decrease with decreasing electron energy, but this effect in the IR is less at Saturn than at Jupiter. The temperature sensitivity of the IR emission is also greater at Saturn than at Jupiter. These dependences are interpreted as results of non-LTE effects on the atmospheric temperature and density profiles. The different dependences of the UV and IR emissions on temperature and electron energy at Saturn may explain the different appearance of polar emissions observed at UV and IR wavelengths, and the differences from those observed at Jupiter. These results lead to the prediction that the differences between the IR and UV aurora at Saturn may be more significant than those at Jupiter. We consider in particular the occurrence of bright polar infrared emissions at Saturn and quantitatively estimate the conditions for such IR-only emissions to appear.  相似文献

A proper evaluation of the perturbations of the host rock induced by the excavation and the emplacement of exothermic wastes is essential for the assessment of the long-term safety of high-level radioactive waste disposals in clay formations. The impact of the thermal transient on the evolution of the damaged zone (DZ) has been explored in the European Commission project TIMODAZ (thermal impact on the damaged zone around a radioactive waste disposal in clay host rocks, 2006–2010). This paper integrates the scientific results of the TIMODAZ project from a performance assessment (PA) point of view, showing how these results support and justify key PA assumptions and the values of PA model parameters. This paper also contextualises the significance of the thermal impact on the DZ from a safety case perspective, highlighting how the project outcomes result into an improved understanding of the thermo–hydro–mechanical behaviour of the clay host rocks. The results obtained in the TIMODAZ project strengthen the assessment basis of the safety evaluation of the current repository designs. There was no evidence throughout the TIMODAZ experimental observations of a temperature-induced additional opening of fractures nor of a significant permeability increase of the DZ. Instead, thermally induced plasticity, swelling and creep seem to be beneficial to the sealing of fractures and to the recovery of a very low permeability in the DZ, close to that of an undisturbed clay host rock. Results from the TIMODAZ project indicate that the favourable properties of the clay host rock, which guarantee the effectiveness of the safety functions of the repository system, are expected to be maintained after the heating–cooling cycle. Hence, the basic assumptions usually made in PA calculations so far are expected to remain valid, and the performance of the system should not be affected in a negative way by the thermal evolution of the DZ around a radioactive waste repository in clay host rock.  相似文献

A properly designed groundwater-monitoring network is critical to evaluate groundwater management policies and regulations and establish a scientifically credible, risk-informed approach towards management of aquifer resources. To achieve proper design, the network must comprise a sufficient number of wells that comprehensively covers the area of interest. In this study, statistical power analysis is utilized to define the size of a proposed monitoring network within the Victoria County Groundwater Conservation District (VCGCD). In particular, the network seeks to provide empirical information to evaluate whether the VCGCD is meeting the criteria of the desired future conditions (DFC) established by the Groundwater Management Area 15 (GMA 15) through the joint planning process, as required by the statutes of Texas. The evaluation of DFCs is expressed as a hypothesis-testing problem with the null hypothesis stating that the VCGCD complies with the DFC, and the alternative hypothesis stating that the VCGCD does not comply with the DFC. The power analysis quantifies the ability of the statistical test to correctly reject the null hypothesis. The power of the statistical test is a function of the sample size and this relationship can be exploited to determine the size of the required groundwater-monitoring network if the effect size can be specified. However, prior to establishing a monitoring network, the groundwater level monitoring tends to be ad hoc; therefore, the statistical moments required for characterizing the effect size are not likely to be known with a high degree of certainty. As such, an innovative framework that integrates power analysis with bootstrap resampling protocols was developed to estimate monitoring network size under uncertainty. The results of the study indicated that a minimum set of approximately 70 wells is required within the VCGCD to statistically evaluate the compliance with DFCs with 90 % reliability and at a significance level of 10?% and 90 % power. The number of wells increased to about 85 when the significance level was reduced to 5 %. Geostatistical analysis indicated that these monitoring wells must be at least 3 miles apart to ensure statistically independent information. The developed methodology provides a practical framework to size a groundwater-monitoring network under data sparse situations.  相似文献

This review argues that organized crime accounts for a significant proportion of global economic activity but despite this has yet to receive substantive attention from economic geographers. It argues that the study of organized crime would expand the empirical terrain of economic geography and produce more holistic, nuanced accounts of globalisation but also that economic geography has much to offer the existing literatures of organized crime. The paper briefly discusses the nature and extent of the global organized crime economy and then goes onto consider the relatively limited explorations of the spatialities of organized crime to date. It then explores the often blurred distinctions between licit and illicit economic practices before considering what empirical investigations of organized crime might add to our understanding of processes of contemporary globalisation.  相似文献

Microtextural changes brought about by heating alkali feldspar crystals from the Shap granite, northern England, at atmospheric pressure, have been studied using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A typical unheated phenocryst from Shap is composed of about 70 vol% of tweed orthoclase with strain-controlled coherent or semicoherent micro- and crypto-perthitic albite lamellae, with maximum lamellar thicknesses <1 μm. Semicoherent lamellae are encircled by nanotunnel loops in two orientations and cut by pull-apart cracks. The average bulk composition of this microtexture is Ab27.6Or71.8An0.6. The remaining 30 vol% is deuterically coarsened, microporous patch and vein perthite composed of incoherent subgrains of oligoclase, albite and irregular microcline. The largest subgrains are ~3 μm in diameter. Heating times in the laboratory were 12 to 6,792 h and T from 300°C into the melting interval at 1,100°C. Most samples were annealed at constant T but two were heated to simulate an 40Ar/39Ar step-heating schedule. Homogenisation of strain-controlled lamellae by Na↔K inter-diffusion was rapid, so that in all run products at >700°C, and after >48 h at 700°C, all such regions were essentially compositionally homogeneous, as indicated by X-ray analyses at fine scale in the transmission electron microscope. Changes in lamellar thickness with time at different T point to an activation energy of ~350 kJmol−1. A lamella which homogenised after 6,800 h at 600°C, therefore, would have required only 0.6 s to do so in the melting interval at 1,100°C. Subgrains in patch perthite homogenised more slowly than coherent lamellae and chemical gradients in patches persisted for >5,000 h at 700°C. Homogenisation T is in agreement with experimentally determined solvi for coherent ordered intergrowths, when a 50–100°C increase in T for An1 is applied. Homogenisation of lamellae appears to proceed in an unexpected manner: two smooth interfaces, microstructurally sharp, advance from the original interfaces toward the mid-line of each twinned, semicoherent lamella. In places, the homogenisation interfaces have shapes reflecting the local arrangements of nanotunnels or pull-aparts. Analyses confirm that the change in alkali composition is also relatively sharp at these interfaces. Si–Al disordering is far slower than alkali homogenisation so that tweed texture in orthoclase, tartan twinning in irregular microcline, and Albite twins in albite lamellae and patches persisted in all our experiments, including 5,478 h at 700°C, 148 h at 1,000°C and 5 h at 1,100°C, even though the ensemble in each case was chemically homogeneous. Nanotunnels and pull-aparts were modified after only 50 min at 500°C following the simulated 40Ar/39Ar step-heating schedule. New features called ‘slots’ developed away from albite lamellae, often with planar traces linking slots to the closest lamella. Slot arrays were often aligned along ghost-like regions of diffraction contrast which may mark the original edges of lamellae. We suggest that the slot arrays result from healing of pull-aparts containing fluid. At 700°C and above, the dominant defects were subspherical ‘bubbles’, which evolved from slots or from regions of deuteric coarsening. The small degree of partial melting observed after 5 h at 1,100°C was often in the vicinity of bubbles. Larger micropores, which formed at subgrain boundaries in patch perthite during deuteric coarsening, retain their shape up to the melting point, as do the subgrain boundaries themselves. It is clear that modification of defects providing potential fast pathways for diffusion in granitic alkali feldspars begins below 500°C and that defect character progressively changes up to, and beyond, the onset of melting.  相似文献

Outgrowths of zircon and xenotime are abundant on detrital zircon in a greenschist facies regional metamorphic slate from the Scottish Highlands. Back-scattered electron images reveal that ca. 3-μm wide zircon outgrowths are porous, inclusion-rich and contain fine-grained intergrowths with xenotime. Focused ion beam milling, transmission electron microscopy and low-voltage scanning transmission electron microscopy show that the outgrowth microstructure is complex, composed of mis-orientated nano-crystalline zircon and a poorly crystalline zircon–xenotime complex. Well-defined micron-sized xenotime is also present within the outgrowth. Micro-textures show that the outgrowth developed in a polyphase history during cooling and exhumation. Accommodation space for the outgrowth is probably generated by a combination of thermal decompaction and the migration of defects in adjacent quartz driven by the force of crystallisation. Zircon may be unique in its ability to record textural evidence of events during uplift and exhumation that are not recorded in major silicate phases.  相似文献

Geochemical processes behind the occurrence of radium activities in excess of the U.S. EPA's drinking water limit of 5 pCi/L combined radium were investigated in a regional sandstone aquifer located in southeastern Wisconsin. Geochemical speciation modeling (PHREEQC 2.7) combined with a detailed understanding of the regional flow system provided by recent flow modeling efforts was used to determine that radium coprecipitation into barite controls radium activity in the unconfined portion of the aquifer. As the aquifer transitions from unconfined to confined conditions, radium levels rise and the water becomes more sulfate rich yet the aquifer remains at saturation with barite throughout. Calculations based on published distribution coefficients and the observed Ra:Ba atomic ratios indicate that barite contains approximately 12 mug/kg coprecipitated radium. Confined portions of the aquifer have high concentrations of sulfate, and barium concentrations become too low to be an effective control on radium activity. Additional, as yet undefined, controls on radium are operative in the downgradient, confined portion of the aquifer.  相似文献
