A technique was developed that allows the determination of the stable carbon isotope ratio of isoprene in air. The method was used for a limited number of ambient measurements as well as laboratory studies of isoprene emitted from Velvet Bean (Mucana pruriens L. var. utilis), including the light and temperature dependence. The mean stable carbon isotope ratio ( 13C) of isoprene emitted from Velvet Bean (Mucana pruriens L. var. utilis) for all our measurements is –27.7 ± 2.0 (standard deviation for 23 data points). Our results indicate a small dependence of the stable carbon isotope ratios on leaf temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The light dependence is 0.0026 ± 0.0012/( mol of photons m–2 s–1) for the studied range from 400 to 1700 mol of photons m–2 s–1. The temperature dependence is 0.16 ± 0.09/K. On average, the emitted isoprene is 2.6 ± 0.9 lighter than the leaf carbon. An uncertainty analysis of the possibility to use stable carbon isotope ratio measurements of isoprene for estimates of its mean photochemical age suggests that meaningful results can be obtained. This is supported by the results of a small number of measurements of the stable carbon isotope composition of ambient isoprene at different locations. The results range from approximately –29 to –16. They are consistent with vegetation emissions of isoprene that is slightly depleted in 13C relative to the plant material and enrichment of 13C in the atmosphere due to isotope fractionation associated with the reaction with OH-radicals. The stable carbon isotope ratio of ambient isoprene at locations directly influenced by isoprene emissions is very close to the values we found in our emission studies, whereas at sites located remote from isoprene emitting vegetation we find substantial enrichment of 13C. This suggests that stable carbon isotope ratio measurements will be a valuable, quantitative method to determine the extent of photochemical processing of isoprene in ambient air.  相似文献

Transplanted mussels and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) were used to assess levels of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc at four sites situated inside and outside of two enclosed marinas, near Melbourne, Australia. Mussels accumulated all metals except cadmium. Over one year, there were large temporal differences in tissue metal levels in mussels, but differences between sites were only apparent for copper and lead. DGT showed temporal differences of the same kind as those seen in the mussels, but appeared to have more power to discriminate between sites. DGT found higher copper levels inside marinas than outside, and high levels of zinc were found inside one marina. Levels of copper and zinc were high enough to be of environmental concern for one site. The effect of fouling on DGT measurements will have to be quantified, or avoided by the use of multiple short-term exposures, if the technique is to become a widespread in situ monitoring tool.  相似文献

Samples of polyethylene pellets were collected at 30 beaches from 17 countries and analyzed for organochlorine compounds. PCB concentrations in the pellets were highest on US coasts, followed by western Europe and Japan, and were lower in tropical Asia, southern Africa and Australia. This spatial pattern reflected regional differences in the usage of PCBs and was positively correlated with data from Mussel Watch, another monitoring approach. DDTs showed high concentrations on the US west coast and in Vietnam. In Vietnam, DDT was predominant over its metabolites (DDE and DDD), suggesting the principal source may be current usage of the pesticide for malaria control. High concentrations of pesticide HCHs were detected in the pellets from southern Africa, suggesting current usage of the pesticides in southern Africa. This study demonstrates the utility and feasibility of the International Pellet Watch approach to monitor POPs at a global scale.  相似文献

 This study compares radiative fluxes and cloudiness fields from three general circulation models (the HadAM4 version of the Hadley Centre Unified model, cycle 16r2 of the ECMWF model and version LMDZ 2.0 of the LMD GCM), using a combination of satellite observations from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) and the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP). To facilitate a meaningful comparison with the ISCCP C1 data, values of column cloud optical thickness and cloud top pressure are diagnosed from the models in a manner consistent with the satellite view from space. Decomposing the cloud radiative effect into contributions from low-medium- and high-level clouds reveals a tendency for the models' low-level clouds to compensate for underestimates in the shortwave cloud radiative effect caused by a lack of high-level or mid-level clouds. The low clouds fail to compensate for the associated errors in the longwave. Consequently, disproportionate errors in the longwave and shortwave cloud radiative effect in models may be taken as an indication that compensating errors are likely to be present. Mid-level cloud errors in the mid-latitudes appear to depend as much on the choice of the convection scheme as on the cloud scheme. Convective and boundary layer mixing schemes require as much consideration as cloud and precipitation schemes when it comes to assessing the simulation of clouds by models. Two distinct types of cloud feedback are discussed. While there is reason to doubt that current models are able to simulate potential `cloud regime' type feedbacks with skill, there is hope that a model capable of simulating potential `cloud amount' type feedbacks will be achievable once the reasons for the remaining differences between the models are understood. The goal of the International Study of Earth-affecting Solar Transients (ISEST) project as part of the Variability of the Sun and Its Terrestrial Impact (VarSITI) program is to understand the origin, evolution, and propagation of solar transients through the space between the Sun and Earth, and to improve our prediction capability for space weather. A goal of ISEST Working Group 4 (Campaign Events) is to study a set of well-observed Sun-to-Earth events to develop an understanding of why some events are successfully forecast (textbook cases), whereas others become problem or failed forecasts. In this article we study six cases during the rise of Solar Cycle 24 that highlight forecasting problems. Likely source coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were identified in all six cases, but the related solar surface activity ranged from uncertain or weak to X-class flares. The geoeffects ranged from none to severe as in the two Sun–Earth events in 2015 that caused severe storms. These events were chosen to illustrate some key problems in understanding the chain from cause to geoeffect.  相似文献

The relationship between seasonal catchment water storage and discharge is typically nonunique due to water storage that is not directly hydraulically connected to streams. Hydraulically disconnected water volumes are often ecologically and hydrologically important but cannot be explicitly estimated using current storage–discharge techniques. Here, we propose that discharge is explicitly sensitive to changes in only some fraction of seasonally dynamic storage that we call “direct storage,” whereas the remaining storage (“indirect storage”) varies without directly influencing discharge. We use a coupled mass balance and storage–discharge function approach to partition seasonally dynamic storage between these 2 pools in the Northern California Coast Ranges. We find that indirect storage constitutes the vast majority of dynamic catchment storage, even at the wettest times of the year. Indirect storage exhibits lower variability over the course of the wet season (and in successive winter periods) than does direct storage. Predicted indirect storage volumes and dynamics match field observations. Comparison of 2 neighbouring field sites reveals that indirect storage volumes can occur as unsaturated storage held under tension in soils and weathered bedrock and as near‐surface saturated storage that remains on hillslopes (and is eventually evapotranspired). Indirect storage volumes (including moisture in the weathered bedrock) may support plant transpiration, and our method indicates that this important water source could be quantified from precipitation and stream discharge records.  相似文献

By virtue of a novel experimental method, Phillips’ blockage theory was verified, while some of the experimental phenomena could not be well explained by Phillips’ theory. Deriving from the dynamic equations, the results obtained expound the experimental phenomena satisfactorily. The relevant wnclusions have significant and great pushing effects on ocean remote sensing techniques and potential value to ocean remote sensing techniques. It has been suggested that large areas of the Earth's lithospheric mantle undergo pervasive dehydration melting during the impact of mantle plumes and the Early-Cretaceous Paraná-Etendeka continental flood-basalt (CFB) province has repeatedly been cited as evidence of this phenomenon. During the Cretaceous, however, southern Brazil experienced two phases of mafic magmatism. These igneous events occurred ~50?Ma apart and therefore represent distinct episodes of melt genesis in the underlying mantle. The first phase of magmatism, in the Early Cretaceous, included the emplacement of lava flows associated with the Paraná-Etendeka CFB province and also the intrusion of small-volume mafic alkaline magmas (e.g. Anitápolis, Jacupiranga and Juquiá) in the Dom Feliciano and Ribeira mobile belts. During the Late Cretaceous, both sodic and potassic mafic magmas were emplaced on the margin of the adjacent Luis-Alves craton and intrude the flood-basalts at Lages. On the basis of variations in incompatible trace-element concentrations (e.g. Ba?=?1000 to 2000?ppm), initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7048–0.7064) and ?Nd values (?3 to ?12), we suggest that all of the Late-Cretaceous mafic potassic magmas were derived from the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) which was metasomatically enriched during the Proterozoic. We propose that these relatively low temperature, volatile-rich, mafic melts provide direct evidence that the underlying SCLM did not melt wholesale during the previous Early-Cretaceous Paraná-Etendeka CFB event. Late-Cretaceous melting of the SCLM beneath southern Brazil may have been caused by heat conduction from either: (1) ponded ~132?Ma Tristan plume-head material; or (2) ~85?Ma Trindade plume-head material channelled southwards between the thick cratonic keels of the Amazonas and São Francisco cratons. The Late-Cretaceous magmatism appears to have been contemporaneous with uplift across southern Brazil and Paraguay; we suggest that both of these phenomena represent the widespread effects of the impact of the Trindade mantle plume on the base of the SCLM. Plate margin stresses and lithospheric extension associated with the opening of the South Atlantic may also have changed the geothermal gradient beneath southern Brazil and contributed to mantle melting.  相似文献

We present the results of body waveform modelling studies for 17 earthquakes of M w ≥5.7 occurring in the South Island, New Zealand region between 1918 and 1962, including the 1929 M s = 7.8 Buller earthquake, the largest earthquake to have occurred in the South Island this century. These studies confirm the concept of slip partitioning in the northern South Island between strike-slip faulting in southwestern Marlborough and reverse and strike-slip faulting in the Buller region, but indicate that the zone of reverse faulting is quite localized. In the central South Island, all historical earthquakes appear to be associated with strike-slip faulting, although recent (post-1991) reverse faulting events suggest that slip partitioning also occurs within this region. The difference between historical and recent seismicity in the central South Island may also reflect stress readjustment occurring in response to the 1717 ad rupture along the Alpine fault. Within the Fiordland region (southwestern South Island) none of the historical earthquakes appears to have occurred along the Australian/Pacific plate interface, but rather they are associated with complex deformation of the subducting plate as well as with deformation of the upper (Pacific) plate. Two earthquakes in the Puysegur Bank region south of the South Island suggest that strike-slip deformation east of the Puysegur Trench is playing a major role in the tectonics of the region.  相似文献

Results from seventy two laboratories participating in GeoPT3, round three of the international proficiency testing programme for analytical geochemistry laboratories, are presented. The report includes analytical results contributed by participating laboratories, together with the z-scores derived from these results using appropriate fitness for purpose criteria. These data are available for use as part of the laboratories' quality control procedures to assess the reliability of analysed results.  相似文献
