We have obtained low noise (S/N > 103), high spectral resolution (/ 10 6) observations of two pure rotation transitions of OH from the solar photosphere. The observations were obtained using the technique of optically null-balanced infrared heterodyne spectroscopy, and consist of center-to-limb line profiles of a = 1 and a = 0 transition near 12 m. These lines should be formed in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and are diagnostics of the thermal structure of the upper photosphere. We find that the = 0R22(24.5)e line strengthens at the solar limb, in contradiction to the predictions of current one-dimensional photospheric models. Our data for this line support a two-dimensional model in which horizontal thermal fluctuations of order ±800 K occur in the region 5000 10–3–10–2. This thermal bifurcation may be maintained by the presence of magnetic flux tubes, and may be related to the solar limb extensions observed in the 30–200 m region.Observations of the = 1R11(29.5)f line, at 885.643 cm–1, show that it is anomalously weak in the photospheric spectrum. We argue that the source function in the core of this line has been substantially increased by interaction with the 9j-7i transition of Mgi at 885.524 cm–1, which is itself too weak to appear in the disk center spectrum.Visiting Astronomer, Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Simulations of the surface temperature and atmospheric humidity with a modern Mars climate model (MCD) and with Phoenix data are used to study the conditions for a liquefaction of brines as a function of latitude and season. The results show that, in the presence of appropriate salts, liquid cryobrines can in course of the diurnal cycle temporarily evolve at high latitudes on Mars’ current climate. The conditions for the liquefaction of “Mars-relevant” cryobrines and time and duration of their stability during the diurnal cycle are calculated for northern spring and for the Phoenix landing site.  相似文献

The Cassini Huygens mission provides a unique opportunity to combine ground-based and spacecraft investigations to increase our understanding of chemical and dynamical processes in Titan’s atmosphere. Spectroscopic measurements from both vantage points enable retrieving global wind structure, temperature structure, and atmospheric composition. An updated analysis of Titan data obtained with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer (IRHS) and Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Wind and Composition (HIPWAC) prior to and during the Cassini Huygens mission is compared to retrievals from measurements with the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS). IRHS/HIPWAC results include the first direct stratospheric wind measurements on Titan, constraints on stratospheric temperature, and the study of atmospheric molecular composition. These results are compared to CIRS retrievals of wind and temperature profile from thermal mapping data and ethane abundance at 10-15° South latitude, near the equatorial region. IRHS/HIPWAC wind results are combined with other direct techniques, stellar occultation measurements, and CIRS results to explore seasonal variability over nearly one Titan year and to provide an empirical altitude profile of stratospheric winds, varying from ∼50 to 210 m/s prograde. The advantage of fully resolved line spectra in species abundance measurements is illustrated by comparing the possible effect on retrieved ethane abundance by blended spectral features of other molecular constituents, e.g., acetylene (C2H2), ethylene (C2H4), allene (C3H4), and propane (C3H8), which overlap the ν9 band of ethane, and are not resolved at lower spectral resolution. IR heterodyne spectral resolution can discriminate weak spectral features that overlap the ν9 band of ethane, enabling ethane lines alone to be used to retrieve abundance. Titan’s stratospheric mean ethane mole fraction (8.6±3 ppmv) retrieved from IRHS/HIPWAC emission line profiles (resolving power λλ∼106) is compared to past values obtained from lower resolution spectra and from CIRS measurements (resolving power λλ∼2×103) and more compatible recent analysis. Results illustrate how high spectral resolution ground-based studies complement the spectral and spatial coverage and resolution of moderate spectral resolution space-borne spectrometers.  相似文献

Conventional numerical predictions of deep excavations normally neglect the construction process of the retaining structure and choose the earth pressure at rest as initial condition at the beginning of the simulation. The presented results of simulation and measurements during the construction process of the Taipei National Enterprise Center show, that such an assumption leads to an underestimation of the horizontal wall deflection, the surface ground settlements as well as the loading of the struts in case of normally to slightly over‐consolidated clayey soil deposits. The stepwise installation process of the individual diaphragm wall panels results in a substantial modification of the lateral effective stresses in the adjacent ground. Especially the pouring process of the panel and the fresh concrete pressure causes a partial mobilization of the passive earth pressure and a distinct stress level increase in the upper half of the wall. As a consequence of the increased stresses prior to the pit excavation, up to 15% greater ground and wall movements are predicted. Moreover, the increased stress level due to the installation process of the diaphragm wall leads to substantial higher strut loadings during the excavation of the pit. A lot of effort has been invested in Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) during the last decade regarding interoperable standards for services and data. But still the scalability and performance of SDI services is reported to be crucial especially if they are accessed concurrently by a high number of users. Furthermore, laws and provisions such as the INSPIRE directive specify challenging requirements regarding the performance, availability and scalability of SDI services. This article presents a Hybrid Cloud architecture for matching INSPIRE‐related Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, without investing in rarely used hardware in advance, by occupying external third‐party resources on a pay‐as‐you‐go basis. The presented Hybrid Cloud is a composition of a local IT‐infrastructure (Private Cloud) and the computational resources of third‐party vendors (Public Cloud). The local infrastructure is laid out to handle the average main load of a service and in lasting peak times additional resources of external providers are allocated and integrated on demand into the local infrastructure to provide sufficient service quality automatically. A proof‐of‐concept implementation of the proposed Hybrid Cloud approach is evaluated and benchmarked with respect to INSPIRE‐related QoS requirements.  相似文献

We report temperatures in Venus’ upper mesosphere/lower thermosphere, deduced from reanalyzing very high resolution infrared spectroscopy of CO2 emission lines acquired in 1990 and 1991. Kinetic temperatures at ~110 km altitude (0.15 Pa) are derived from the Doppler width of fully-resolved single line profiles measured near 10.4 μm wavelength using the NASA GSFC Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer (IRHS) at the NASA IRTF on Mauna Kea, HI, close to Venus inferior conjunction and two Venus solstices. Measured temperatures range from ~200 to 240 K with uncertainty typically less than 10 K. Temperatures retrieved from similar measurement in 2009 using the Cologne Tuneable Heterodyne Infrared Spectrometer (THIS) at the NOAO McMath Telescope at Kitt Peak, AZ are 10–20 K lower. Temperatures retrieved more recently from the SOIR instrument on Venus EXpress are consistent with these results when the geometry of observation is accounted for. It is difficult to compare ground-based sub-mm retrievals extrapolated to 110 km due to their much larger field of view, which includes the night side regions not accessible to infrared heterodyne observations. Temperature variability appears to be high on day-to-day as well as longer timescales. Observed short term and long term variability may be attributed to atmospheric dynamics, diurnal variability and changes over solar activity and seasons. The Venus International Reference Atmosphere (VIRA) model predicts cooler temperatures at the sampled altitudes in the lower thermosphere/upper mesosphere and is not consistent with these measurements.  相似文献

—?We apply an algorithm based on the modal summation method to theoretically estimate the site effect at selected locations underlain by different geological formations within the city of Thessaloniki (Greece). Complete strong motion synthetics are constructed for all components of motion at each site, for a maximum frequency of 10?Hz. The anelastic, local 1-D velocity models are based on cross-hole data. Four point sources with different azimuths and distances from the city are used to compute the input signals. The theoretical amplification is estimated through spectral ratios of accelerograms obtained by the local 1-D over those obtained by the regional 1-D velocity model. The results from the numerical modeling are compared with those derived from experimental techniques, such as of Standard Spectral Ratio and Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio, which had been applied to acceleration data recorded at the same sites. The comparison demonstrates that the theoretical amplifications based on known and simple subsurface geology can be used as a first-order estimate, while for cases of more complex geometries the use of at least 2-D modeling in site effects estimation is mandatory.  相似文献
