When Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 biofilms (attached to Sepharose surfaces) were subjected to dissolved Fe3+, most Fe was removed from solution within 25 h by surface complexation with negatively charged functional groups on the bacterial cell wall via a nucleation and mineralization process. Chemical formation of Fe-(hydr)oxides was partially responsible for dissolved Fe removal, which stemmed from a pH increase, facilitated by microbial activity. PAO1 used Fe3+ as an electron acceptor producing Fe2+ under localized anaerobic conditions over the first 50 h. The high ratio of Fe2+ to total Fe in solution produced a high proportion of Fe(II) in Fe precipitates; however, as the formation of Fe-(hydr)oxides started after 50 h, the Fe2+ content in solution began to diminish. Biofilms can so influence the local chemical conditions and metal speciation that the bulk solution phase is also affected, thereby mediating a wide-range (bio)geochemical cycling of iron. Long-term survival of natural biofilms, even under strict oligotrophic conditions, could have a broad lasting effect on the bulk geochemical environment. 相似文献

The development of rapakivi texture in feldspars from the Ketilidian granitoids of south Greenland has been investigated using Sr, O and H isotopes. A low temperature signature is found in the Sr and O data which seemingly contradicts some textural features that point to a magmatic origin of the plagioclase mantles around the K-feldspar ovoids. An origin for these mantles involving exsolution from an original alkali feldspar solid solution is proposed, which involves growth of mantles over a range of conditions determined by the mobility of the exsolving sodic feldspar. This mobility may be enhanced at high temperatures in the presence of melts or increased fluid pressures and at lower temperatures by the processes responsible for the transformation of K-feldspar to microcline. Rapakivi granites with both white and dark green feldspar occur in south Greenland but show no major isotopic differences, although the dark alkali feldspars contain significantly more fluid. New algorithms have been derived for computing terrain connections, all components of the attraction of the topography at
the topographic surface and the gradients of these attractions. These algorithms utilize fast Fourier transforms, but, in
contrast to methods currently in use, all divergences of the integrals are removed during the analysis. Sequential methods
employing a smooth intermediate reference surface have been developed to avoid the very large transforms necessary when making
computations at high resolution over a wide area.
A new method for the numerical solution of Molodensky's problem has been developed to mitigate the convergence difficulties
that occur at short wavelengths with methods based on a Taylor series expansion. A trial field on a level surface is continued
analytically to the topographic surface, and compared with that predicted from gravity observations. The difference is used
to compute a correction to the trial field and the process iterated. Special techniques are employed to speed convergence
and prevent oscillations.
Three different spectral methods for fitting a point-mass set to a gravity field given on a regular grid at constant elevation
are described. Two of the methods differ in the way that the spectrum of the point-mass set, which extends to infinite wave
number, is matched to that of the gravity field which is band-limited. The third method is essentially a space-domain technique

Development of a Jurassic volcano-tectonic rift basin in the southern Andes created a setting in which thick, rhyolitic volcaniclastic sequences accumulated in submarine environments and were penetrated by hypabyssal intrusions during or shortly after deposition. In the Ultima Esperanza District of southern Chile, extensive masses of peperite were produced when rhyolite magma underwent quenching, disruption, and commingling with wet, unconsolidated sediments during intrusion at shallow levels beneath the sea floor. The peperite forms discordant intrusive masses with volumes of up to several cubic kilometers, in which large, widely spaced, coherent rhyolite feeder pods are surrounded by, and grade into closely packed and dispersed peperite. Closely packed peperite consists of tightly fitting clasts separated by sediment-filled fractures. In dispersed peperite, the sediment forms a matrix surrounding large masses of fractured rhyolite and smaller more widely separated rhyolite clasts; evidence of in situ quench fragmentation is well preserved on both outcrop and thin-section scales. Thin sections show that clast margins and, in some cases, entire small clasts underwent cooling-contraction granulation, releasing shards of quenched rhyolite and fragments of phenocrysts into the adjacent sediment.Interaction between magma and wet sediment was non-explosive and involved fluidization of the host sediments, creating space for the intruding magma and causing pervasive injection of highly mobile sediment along thermal contraction cracks in quench-fragmented rhyolite. The ability of the magma to undergo complex intermixing with large volumes of sediment, with widespread preservation of in situ fragmentation textures, is interpreted to reflect a relatively low magma viscosity, presumably caused by retention of volatiles in the magma at the ambient pressures involved.Beds of redeposited peperite within the rift-basin fill indicate that some of the intrusive peperite masses reached the sea floor, undergoing slumping and mass flow. Sensitivity experiments with a simple water-balance model were used to constrain the possible climatic causes of distinct Holocene patterns of lake-level variation in different regions of Europe. Lakes in S Sweden were low at 9 ka, high around 6.5 ka, low again around 4 ka and are high now. Lakes in Estonia show similar but weaker trends. Lakes in S France were highest around 9 ka, lowest around 4 ka, intermediate now. Lakes in Greece were also high around 9 ka but continued rising until 7.5 ka, then fell gradually from 5 ka with a brief high phase around 3 ka, and are low now. The model was forced with insolation anomalies deduced from orbital variations, temperature anomalies inferred from the pollen record and cloudiness anomalies derived from changes in the position of the subtropical anticyclone (inferred from reconstructed changes in the equator-to-pole temperature gradient), in order to evaluate the effects of resultant evaporation changes on catchment water balance. The resulting simulated changes in runoff (precipitation minus actual evapotranspiration) were slight, and frequently opposite to the observed trends. Larger changes in precipitation are plausible and are required to explain the data. The required precipitation increase in N Europe from 9 ka (low) to 6 ka (high) is suggested by GCM experiments to have been a consequence of interacting insolation and residual ice-sheet effects on the atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic. The explanation of other observed changes, including the drying trend during the Holocene in S Europe, has not been provided by GCM experiments to date. Explanations may lie in changes in mesoscale circulation, sea-surface temperature patterns and the coupling between these phenomena that may not follow orbital changes in any simple way.

Laboratory rainfall simulation experiments indicate greater splash losses for hydrophobic (water repellent) than for wettable sandy loam soils at different rainfall intensities, durations and soil surface inclinations. Using synchronized video cameras with different shutter speeds and stroboscopically illuminated 35 mm still photography, differences in splash droplets and ejection trajectory characteristics are examined. For hydrophobic soil, raindrop impact gives rise to fewer, larger, slower-moving daughter ejection droplets which carry more sediment and hence follow shorter range trajectories compared with wettable soil. Thirty-three bottom sediments were collected from the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, Tidal Basin, and Washington Ship Channel in June 1991 to define the extent of trace metal contamination and to elucidate source areas of sediment contaminants. In addition, twenty-three sediment samples were collected directly in front of and within major storm and combined sewers that discharge directly to these areas. Trace metals (e.g., Cu, Cr, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Zn) exhibited a wide range in values throughout the study area. Sediment concentrations of Pb ranged from 32.0 μg Pb g?1 to 3,630 μg Pb g?1, Cd from 0.24 μg Cd g?1 to 4.1 μg Cd g?1, and Hg from 0.13 μg Hg g?1 to 9.2 μg Hg g?1, with generally higher concentrations in either outfall or sewer sediments compared to river bottom-sediments. In the Anacostia River, concentration differences among sewer, outfall, and river sediments, along with downriver spatial trends in trace metals suggest that numerous storm and combined swers are major sources of trace metals. Similar results were observed in both the Tidal Basin and Washington Ship Channel. Cadminum and Pb concentrations are higher in specific sewers and outfalls, whereas the distribution of other metals suggests a more diffuse source to the rivers and basins of the area. Cadmium and Pb also exhibited the greatest enrichment throughout the study area, with peak values located in the Anacostia River, near the Washington Navy Yard. Enrichment factors decrease in the order: Cd>Pb>Zn>Hg>Cu>Cr. Between 70% and 96% of sediment-bound Pb and Cd was released from a N2-purged IN HCl leach. On average, ≤40% of total sedimentary Cu was liberated, possibly due to the partial attack of organic components of the sediment. Sediments of the tidal freshwater portion of the Potomac estuary reflect a moderate to highly components area with substantial enrichments of sedimentary Pb, Cd, and Zn. This study was designed to determine the amount of particulate organic carbon (POC) introduced to the Gulf of Mexico by the Mississippi River and assess the influence of POC inputs on the development of hypoxia and burial of organic carbon on the Louisiana continental shelf. Samples of suspended sediment and supporting hydrographic data were collected from the river and >50 sites on the adjacent shelf. Suspended particles collected in the river averaged 1.8±0.3% organic carbon. Because of this uniformity, POC values (in μmol l?1) correlated well with concentrations of total suspended matter. Net transport of total organic carbon by the Mississippi-Atchafalaya River system averaged 0.48×1012 moles y?1 with 66% of the total organic carbon carried as POC. Concentrations of POC decreased from as high as 600 μmol l?1 in the river to <0.8 μmol l?1 in offshore waters. In contrast, the organic carbon fraction of the suspended matter increased from <2% of the total mass in the river to >35% along the shelf at ≥10 km from the river mouth. River flow was a dominant factor in controlling particle and POC distributions; however, time-series data showed that tides and weather fronts can influence particle movement and POC concentrations. Values for apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) increased from ~60 μmol l?1 to >200 μmol l?1 along the shelf on approach to the region of chronic hypoxia. Short-term increases in AOU were related to transport of more particle-rich waters. Sediments buried on the shelf contained less organic carbon than incoming river particles. Orgamic carbon and δ13C values for shelf sediments indicated 3 that large amounts of both terrigenous and marine organic carbon are being decomposed in shelf waters and sediments to fuel observed hypoxia. 相似文献

Summary Distributions through the year of temperature, geopotential height and specific humidity, and of their standard deviations, over southern African radiosonde stations are studied through harmonic analysis. Characteristics of annual and semi-annual cycles vary across the subcontinent as a result of thermal and mechanical effects induced by the land mass. Over the interior plateau temperatures and geopotential heights through to 100 hPa respond directly to solar heating of the surface and resultant seasonal changes in surface-at-mosphere heat fluxes. Around the coast temperatures and geopotential heights are additionally influenced by seasonally-varying ocean-atmosphere heat fluxes. Cycles of atmospheric moisture are dependent on properties of the low-level circulation rather than on temperature per se. The results demarcate the two inversions frequently located over the subcontinent and indicate that the local subtropical jet stream is displaced latitudinally on a semi-annual cycle, lying furthest south in February and August.With 12 Figures 相似文献
