Metabolism of metals was assessed in populations of Mytilus edulis exposed to metals in the laboratory and in the field. Chronic exposure to metals in both environments resulted in increased concentrations of metals in both the low molecular weight metal-binding protein fraction, which contains metallothioneins, and in the high molecular weight metal-binding protein fraction, which contains metalloenzymes. Our results from analysis of laboratory-exposed populations and from monitoring indigenous and transplanted populations indicate that the capacity for production of metallothioneins is limited and that the quantities present differ greatly with seasonal changes in the environment. 相似文献

The present study indicates that most semiconductor components are fabricated such that they are not affected by operation in a dielectric oil environment. A quantitative estimate of the conditions under which oil-soluble ions will invert semiconductor surfaces and interfere with proper device operation is developed. The results are discussed in terms of pressure-tolerant electronic systems—solid-state components operated immersed in chemically inert dielectric oils when these components are subject to, and experience, ambient hydrostatic pressures of the ocean depths. A new approach to the classification of estuaries is described. The estuary environment classification (EEC) is based on a hierarchical view of the abiotic components that comprise the environments of estuaries. The EEC postulates that climate, oceanic, riverine and catchment factors ‘control’ a hierarchy of processes and broadly determine the physical and biological characteristics of estuaries. The classification differentiates estuaries at four levels of detail. Level 1 differentiates global scale variation based on differences in climatic and oceanic processes, which are discriminated by the factors: latitude, oceanic basins and large landmasses. Level 2 differentiates variation in estuary hydrodynamic processes, which are discriminated by estuary basin morphometry, river and oceanic forcing. Level 3 differentiates variation among estuaries that are due to catchment processes, which are discriminated by catchment geology and catchment land cover. The approach has been applied to all the estuaries in New Zealand using existing data sources. Estuaries were assigned class membership at each level of the classification by applying criteria in the form of decision rules to the database of assignment characteristics. GIS was then used to map the estuaries with classes being defined by colour at any level of the classification. The resulting map provides a multi-scale spatial framework that is suitable for many environmental or conservation management applications. 相似文献

The S(1) line of the pressure-induced fundamental band of H2 was identified and measured in the spectra of Saturn and Jupiter. This broad line at 4750 cm?1 lies in a region free from telluric and planetary absorptions. It is about 99% absorbing in the core; the high-frequency wing extends to at least 5100 cm?1. We compare the obseved line shape to the predictions of both a reflecting-layer model (RLM) and a homogeneous scattering model (HSM). The RLM provides a good fit to the Saturn line profile for temperatures near 150K; the derived base-level density is 0.52 (+0.26, ?0.17) amagat and the H2 abundance is 25 (+10, ?9) km-amagat, assuming a scale height of 48 km. The Jupiter line profile is fit by both the RLM and HSM, but for widely differing temperatures, neither of which seems probable. The precise fitting of the observed S(1) line profile to computed models depends critically on the determination of the true continuum level; difficulties encountered in finding the continuum, especially for Jupiter, are discussed. Derived RLM densities and abundances for both planets are substantially lower than those derived from RLM analyses of the H2 quadrupole lines, the 3ν3 band of CH4, and from other sources. 相似文献

River ice break‐up is known to have important morphological, ecological and socio‐economic effects on cold‐regions river environments. One of the most persistent effects of the spring break‐up period is the occurrence of high‐water events. A return‐period assessment of maximum annual nominal water depths occurring during the spring break‐up and open‐water season at 28 Water Survey of Canada hydrometric sites over the 1913–2002 time period in the Mackenzie River basin is presented. For the return periods assessed, 13 (14) stations are dominated by peak events occurring during the spring break‐up (open‐water) season. One location is determined to have a mixed signal. A regime classification is proposed to separate ice‐ and open‐water dominated systems. As part of the regime classification procedure, specific characteristics of return‐period patterns including alignment, and difference between the 2 and 10‐year events are used to identify regime types. A dimensionless stage‐discharge plot allows for a contrast of the relative magnitudes of flows required to generate maximum nominal water‐depth events in the different regimes. At sites where discharge during the spring break‐up is approximately one‐quarter or greater than the magnitude of the peak annual discharge, nominal water depths can be expected to exceed those occurring during the peak annual discharge event. Several physical factors (location, basin area, stream order, gradient, river orientation, and climate) are considered to explain the differing regimes and discussed relative to the major sub‐regions of the MRB. East-west trending magnetic anomalies in the Southern Hemisphere of Mars: Modeling analysis and interpretation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Maps of the vector components of the martian crustal magnetic field over the strongly magnetized Terra Cimmeria/Sirenum region are constructed using Mars Global Surveyor magnetometer data. Although pronounced east-west trending anomalies are present on the radial and north field component maps at the mapping altitude (∼360-380 km), these trends are much less prominent at the lower aerobraking altitude (∼90-150 km). Comparisons with similar maps produced using artificial data at the aerobraking altitude indicate that elongated sources in this region may have maximum lengths along the martian surface of ∼500 km and maximum aspect ratios of ∼2. Iterative forward modeling of several relatively isolated anomalies in the mapped region yields paleomagnetic pole positions consistent with those estimated in previous studies of other anomalies using mapping phase and science phasing orbit data. On this basis, it is inferred that sources in the studied region are most probably magnetized primarily in northward or southward directions. Using this additional constraint, iterative forward modeling is then applied to determine a magnetization distribution that is consistent with data at both the aerobraking altitude and the mapping altitude. The model magnetization distribution, which includes 41 discrete sources, again indicates no highly elongated sources. An examination of surface geology in the region as well as a consideration of the global distribution of anomalies suggests that magmatic intrusions (e.g., subsurface dike swarms), cooling in the presence of water, are the most likely sources of the magnetic anomalies. 相似文献

Summary The relationship between European surface temperature and winds over the eastern North Atlantic are investigated for the
years 1988 to 1997. Daily Special Sensor Microwave Imager SSM/I observations are used to evaluate a monthly surface wind index
that quantifies the influence of southwesterly flow. Our wind index and the monthly-mean surface-air temperatures in late
winter and early spring over France and northern-latitude Europe are highly correlated. In February, the year-to-year increases/decreases
match every year for France (correlation of 0.82 with the Index); and every year with just one exception for Europe (correlation
with the Index of 0.76 for a longitudinal strip through Europe 45–50° N, and 0.73 for the 50–60° N strip). In March, the increases/decreases
of the wind Index and of the temperatures for France also match, but the correlation with the Index is lower, 0.65.
The high correlation between our Index and the large interannual fluctuations in the monthly temperature in late winter and
early spring indicate that the onset of the spring conditions in Europe is significantly influenced by the wind patterns over
the eastern North Atlantic.
Coinciding with the fluctuations from warm-Europe/high-Index winter to the opposite conditions, we observe “seesaw” effects,
fluctuations over the North Atlantic, in opposite directions in the east (25–5° W), and the west (65–45° W). In the low-Index
years we find that: (a) the surface-air temperatures in the west are appreciably higher than in the east (but slightly lower
in the high-Index year), and (b) the difference between the 500 mb meridional wind in the west and that in the east is positive
and large, exceeding 10 m s−1 (but it becomes negative and small in the high-Index years). The “seesaw” effects suggest that a positive feedback exits
between these cross-Atlantic temperature differences and the surface winds.

The kinetics of non-convergent cation ordering in MgFe2O4 have been studied by measuring the Curie temperature (T
c) of synthetic samples as a function of isothermal annealing time. The starting material was a synthetic sample of near-stoichiometric
MgFe2O4, synthesised from the oxides in air and quenched from 900 °C in water. Ordering experiments were performed using small chips
of this material and annealing them at temperatures between 450 °C and 600 °C. The chips were periodically removed from the
furnace, and their Curie temperatures were determined from measurements of alternating-field magnetic susceptibility (χ) as
a function of temperature (T) to 400 °C. The Curie temperature of MgFe2O4 is very sensitive to the intracrystalline distribution of Fe3+ and Mg cations between tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel crystal structure, and hence provides a very sensitive
probe of the cation ordering process. The χ-T curve for the starting material displays a single sharp magnetic transition at a temperature of 303 °C. During isothermal
annealing, the χ-T curve develops two distinct magnetic transitions; the first at a temperature corresponding to T
c for the disordered starting material and the second at a higher temperature corresponding to T
c for the equilibrium ordered phase. The size of the magnetic signal from the ordered phase increases smoothly as a function
of time, until equilibrium is approached and the shape of the χ-T curve corresponds to a single sharp magnetic transition for the homogeneous ordered phase. These observations demonstrate
that cation ordering in MgFe2O4 proceeds via a heterogeneous mechanism, involving the nucleation and growth of fine-scale domains of the ordered phase within
a matrix of disordered material. Disordering experiments were performed by taking material equilibrated at 558 °C and annealing
it at 695 °C. The mechanism of isothermal disordering is shown to involve nucleation and growth of disordered domains within
an ordered matrix, combined with continuous disordering of the ordered matrix. This mixed mechanism of disordering may provide
an explanation for the difference between the rates of ordering and disordering observed in MgFe2O4 using X-ray diffraction. The origin of the heterogeneous ordering/disordering mechanism is discussed in terms of the Ginzburg-Landau
rate law. It is argued that heterogeneous mechanisms are likely to occur in kinetic experiments performed far from equilibrium,
whereas a homogeneous mechanism may operate under slow equilibrium cooling. The implications of these observations for geospeedometry
are discussed.

We present a summary of the kinds of outputs submitted to the Geography and Environmental Studies sub-panel (H-32) for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), and examine the relationships between the peer assessment of research quality that the RAE process has typified, and alternative modes of assessment based on bibliometrics. This comparison is effected using (in aggregate form) some of the results from the RAE, together with citation data gathered after completion of the RAE assessment, specifically for the purpose of this paper. We conclude that, if it continues to be necessary and desirable to assess, in some measure and however imprecisely, research quality, then peer assessment cannot be replaced by bibliometrics. Bibliometrics permit measurement of something that may be linked to quality but is essentially a different phenomenon – a measure of 'impact', for example. 相似文献
