Estuarine turbidity maxima (ETM) play an important role in zooplankton and larval fish productivity in many estuaries. Yet in many of these systems, little is known about the food web that supports this secondary production. To see if phytoplankton have the potential to be a component of the ETM food web in the Chesapeake Bay estuary a series of cruises were carried out to determine the biomass distribution and floral composition of phytoplankton in and around the ETM during the winter and spring using fluorometry, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and microscopy. Two distinct phytoplankton communities were observed along the salinity gradient. In lower salinity waters, biomass was low and the community was composed mostly of diatoms, while in more saline waters biomass was high and the community was composed mostly of mixotrophic dinoflagellates, which were often concentrated in a thin layer below the pycnocline. Phytoplankton biomass was always low in the ETM, but high concentrations of phytoplankton pigment degradation products and cellular remains were often observed suggesting that this was an area of high phytoplankton mortality and/or an area where phytoplankton derived particulate organic matter was being trapped. These results, along with a box model analysis, suggest that under certain hydrodynamic conditions phytoplankton derived organic matter can be trapped in ETM and potentially play a role in fueling secondary production. 相似文献
Maps of the vector components of the Mars crustal magnetic field are constructed at the mapping altitude (360 to 410 km) using a selected set of data obtained with the Mars Global Surveyor magnetometer during 2780 orbits of the planet in 1999. Forward modeling calculations are then applied to six relatively strong and isolated, dominantly dipolar, magnetic anomalies for the primary purpose of estimating bulk directions of magnetization. Assuming that the magnetizing field was a (dipolar) core dynamo field centered in the planet, paleomagnetic pole positions are calculated for the six primary source bodies together with that for a seventh anomaly analyzed earlier. In agreement with several previous studies, it is found that six of the seven pole positions are clustered in what is now the northern lowlands in a region centered northwest of Olympus Mons (mean pole position: 34°±10° N, 202°±58° E). Assuming that the dynamo dipole moment vector was approximately parallel to the rotation axis, the modeling results therefore suggest a major reorientation of Mars relative to its rotation axis after magnetization was acquired. Such a reorientation may have been stimulated by internal mass redistributions associated with the formation of the northern lowlands and Tharsis, for example. A comparison of the mean paleo (magnetic) equator to the global distribution of crustal fields shows that magnetic anomalies tend to occur at low paleolatitudes. The same appears to be true for the Noachian-aged valley networks, which exhibit a broad spatial correlation with the magnetic anomalies. A possible interpretation is that the formation of magnetic anomalies and the valley networks was favored in the tropics where melting of water ice and snow was a stronger source of both surface valley erosion and groundwater recharge during the earliest history of the planet. This would be consistent with models in which hydrothermal alteration of crustal rocks played a role in producing the unusually strong martian magnetic anomalies. 相似文献
The kink instability may be responsible for compact loop flares since the instability is triggered once the twist in a coronal loop exceeds a critical value. During the non-linear evolution of the instability a large current builds up, reconnection can occur and the magnetic energy released due to reconnection may explain the rapid heating of the flare. However, there has been some debate over the nature of the current concentration and, in particular, whether the current saturates or whether it is a current sheet, and what influences these possible states. In this paper we consider two similar equilibria having a twist function which rises to a peak and then falls off. One is steeper than the other allowing us to investigate whether the steepness of the peak has any effect on the nature of the current. For each profile, we run the code on five different grid resolutions and see how the maximum of the current scales with grid resolution. We also look for behavior in the x-component of the velocity which might be similar to the step-function behavior associated with singularities in the linear kink instability. For both profiles we find that the current scales almost linearly with resolution and that vx drops steeply at the position of the current concentration. This suggests that, for these particular profiles, there are indications of current sheet formation and that the steepness in the peak of the twist does not affect the nature of the current. 相似文献
A lack of equilibrium of twisted magnetic flux tubes emerging from the photosphere into the corona is considered. Assuming mass and flux conservation in the tube and an isothermal tube that is in thermal equilibrium with the surrounding plasma, it is shown that a sufficently rapid temperature increase through the transition zone may lead to the loss of magnetohydrostatic equilibrium of the emerging flux tube due to the enhancement of the plasma pressure inside the tube. The non-equilibrium leads to a rapid expansion of the tube to reach a new equilibrium state. The rise and expansion of the tube before and after the non-equilibrium are accompanied by an increase in the twist of the magnetic field. This may lead to the field exceeding the threshold for the onset of the kink instability and a subsequent explosive release of magnetic energy. 相似文献
Solar plasma that exists at around 105 K, which has traditionally been referred to as the solar transition region, is probably in a dynamic and fibril state with a small filling factor. Its origin is as yet unknown, but we suggest that it may be produced primarily by one of five different physical mechanisms, namely: the heating of cool spicular material; the containment of plasma in low-lying loops in the network; the thermal linking of cool and hot plasma at the feet of coronal loops; the heating and evaporating of chromospheric plasma in response to a coronal heating event; and the cooling and draining of hot coronal plasma when coronal heating is switched off. We suggest that, in each case, a blinker could be produced by the granular compression of a network junction, causing subtelescopic fibril flux tubes to spend more of their time at transition-region temperatures and so to increase the filling factor temporarily. 相似文献
A cylindrically-symmetric magnetic arcade with its axis on the photosphere is perturbed by means of an alteration in the pressure along the base. The perturbation is examined with a view to finding equilibrium configurations close to the original equilibrium. It is found that equilibria can only be found when the integral of the excess pressure along the base is zero. In other cases no equilibria can be found and the arcade is likely either to collapse or, in the case of a coronal mass ejection, to erupt. For an initial arcade whose field increases linearly with radial distance from the axis, the neighbouring equilibria have been found. 相似文献
Properties of lunar crustal magnetization thus far deduced from Apollo subsatellite magnetometer data are reviewed using two of the most accurate presently available magnetic anomaly maps — one covering a portion of the lunar near side and the other a part of the far side.
The largest single anomaly found within the region of coverage on the near-side map correlates exactly with a conspicuous, light-colored marking in western Oceanus Procellarum called Reiner Gamma. This feature is interpreted as an unusual deposit of ejecta from secondary craters of the large nearby primary impact crater Cavalerius. An age for Cavalerius (and, by implication, for Reiner Gamma) of 3.2 ± 0.2 × 109 y is estimated. The main (30 × 60 km) Reiner Gamma deposit is nearly uniformly magnetized in a single direction, with a minimum mean magnetization intensity of 7 × 10−2 G cm3/g (assuming a density of 3 g/cm3), or about 700 times the stable magnetization component of the most magnetic returned samples. Additional medium-amplitude anomalies exist over the Fra Mauro Formation (Imbrium basin ejecta emplaced 3.9 × 109 y ago) where it has not been flooded by mare basalt flows, but are nearly absent over the maria and over the craters Copernicus, Kepler, and Reiner and their encircling ejecta mantles.
The mean altitude of the far-side anomaly gap is much higher than that of the near-side map and the surface geology is more complex, so individual anomaly sources have not yet been identified. However, it is clear that a concentration of especially strong sources exists in the vicinity of the craters Van de Graaff and Aitken. Numerical modeling of the associated fields reveals that the source locations do not correspond with the larger primary impact craters of the region and, by analogy with Reiner Gamma, may be less conspicuous secondary crater ejecta deposits. The reason for a special concentration of strong sources in the Van de Graaff-Aitken region is unknown, but may be indirectly related to the existence of strongly modified crustal terrain which also occurs in the same region. The inferred directions of magnetization for the several sources of the largest anomalies are highly inclined with respect to one another, but are generally depleted in the north-south direction. The north-south depletion of magnetization intensity appears to continue across the far-side within the region of coverage.
The mechanism of magnetization and the origin of the magnetizing field remain unresolved, but the uniformity with which the Reiner Gamma deposit is apparently magnetized, and the north-south depletion of magnetization intensity across a substantial portion of the far side, seem to require the existence of an ambient field, perhaps of global or larger extent. The very different inferred directions of magnetization possessed by nearly adjacent sources of the Van de Graaff-Aitken anomalies, and the depletion in their north-south component of magnetization, do not favor an internally generated dipolar field oriented parallel to the present spin axis. A variably oriented interplanetary magnetizing field that was intrinsically strong or locally amplified by unknown surface processes is least inconsistent with the data. 相似文献
Extensive portions of the continental shelf off the coast of British Columbia were subaerially exposed during Late Wisconsinan deglaciation due to lowering of relative sea level by as much as 150 m. Paleoecological analyses were conducted at two sites on the emergent continental shelf where terrestrial surfaces with in situ conifers are preserved. The woody plant remains confirm that, during the latest period of subaerial exposure, terrestrial vegetation was established on the continental shelf. Microscopic identification of fossil wood, and analyses of pollen and plant macrofossils from the associated paleosols and overlying shallow pond sediments indicate that productive Pinus contorta-dominated communities with abundant Alnus crispa and ferns grew on the shelf adjacent to and on the Queen Charlotte Islands around 12,200 14C yr B.P. Dwarf shrubs including Salix and Empetrum, and herbaceous plants such as Heracleum lanatum and Hippuris vulgaris, were also important components of the shelf vegetation. Near northern Vancouver Island, mixed coniferous forests dominated by Pinus contorta with Picea, Tsuga spp., Alnus spp., and ferns occupied the shelf at 10,500 14C yr B.P. 相似文献
Representation of the subsurface light field is a crucial component of pelagic ecosystem and water quality models. Modeling
the light field in estuaries is a particularly complicated problem due to the significant influence of high concentrations
of dissolved and particulate matter that are derived from both terrestrial and estuarine sources. The goal of this study was
to develop a relatively simple but effective way to model light attenuation variability in a turbuid estuary (Chesapeake Bay,
United States) in a coupled physical-biological model. We adopted a simple, nonspectral empirical approach. Surface water
quality data (salinity was used as a proxy of chromophoric dissolved organic matter [CDOM]) and light measurements from the
Chesapeake Bay Program were used to determine the absorption coefficients in a linear attenuation model using regression methods.
This model predicts Kc (specific attenuation due to phytoplankton/chlorophylla [chla]), Kt (specific attenuation due to total suspended solids), and Ks (a function of specific attenuation coefficients of CDOM in relation to salinity). The Bay-wide fitted relation between the
light attenuation coefficient and water quality concentrations gives generally good estimates of total light attenuation,
Kd. The direct inclusion of salinity in the relationship has one disadvantage: it can yield negative values for Kd at high salinities. We developed two separate models for two different salinity regimes. This approach, in addition to solving
the negative Kd problem, also accounts for some changes in specific light absorption by chla, seston (nonphytoplankton particulate matter), and CDOM that apparently occur in different salinity regimes in Chesapeake
Bay. The resulting model predicts the statistical characteristics (i.e., the mean and variance) of Kd quite accurately in most regions of Chesapeake Bay. We also discuss in this paper the feasibility and caveats of using Kd converted from Secchi depth in the empirical method. 相似文献
