We determined the range of the tidal variations in nutrient flux across the sediment–water interface and elucidated mechanisms of the flux variation in two estuarine intertidal flats (one sand, one mud) in northeastern Japan. Nutrient flux was measured using in situ light and dark chambers, which were incubated for 2 h, 2–6 times per day. Results showed that nutrient concentration in overlying water varied by tide and was also affected by sewage-treated water inflow. The nutrient fluxes responded quickly to the tidal variation in overlying water chemistry and the range of the variation in flux was as large as the seasonal-scale variation reported in previous studies. In the sand flat, salinity increase likely enhanced benthos respiration and led to increases in both O2 consumption and PO43− regeneration under low illumination, while benthic microalgae were likely to actively generate O2, uptake PO43− and suppress PO43− release under high illumination (>900 μmol photons m−2 s−1). Also in the mud flat, PO43− flux was related with O2 flux, although the range of temporal variation in PO43− flux was small. In both the flats, NH4+ flux was always governed by NH4+ concentration in the overlying water; either an increase in NH4+ uptake or a decrease in NH4+ release was observed as the NH4+ concentration rose due to inflow of river water or input of sewage-treated water. Although NO3− tended to be released in both tidal flats when low NO3− concentration seawater dominated, their relationship was likely to be weakened under conditions of low oxygen consumption and suppressed denitrification. It is likely that tidal variation in nutrient flux is governed more by the nutrient concentration than other factors, such as benthic biological processes, particularly in the case where nutrient concentration in the overlying water is relatively high and with wide amplitude. 相似文献

Megalobenthic samples trawled from the bathyal zone in Sagami Bay contain some probable subarctic elements, such asSebastolobus macrochir, Clidoderma asperrimum, Solaster paxillatus, Macoma calcarea, Cryptonatica clausa, Eunatica pallida, Volutomitra alaskana, Paralomis multispina andPandalus hyspinotus, among others. The mechanism and process of invasion of such cold-water species into the deep-sea zone in Sagami Bay are not simple. There are some evidences that these animals are propagating in Sagami Bay. The occurrences of subarctic fish there are not unusual because of their strong swimming ability. The benthic animals that have planktonic larval stages might be dispersed in the same process as in the Oyashio plankton translocated by Oyashio Undercurrent. However, the mechanism and process of dispersions of egg-carrying crustaceans and egg-case producing gastropods remain unanswered. The sea surface emissivity in the infrared region is determined on the basis of data analyses. Net radiation, surface irradiance and other oceanographical and meteorological variables are measured throughout most of the year at the oceanographical observatory tower in Tanabe Bay, Japan. We have found that 0.984±0.004 is a reliable emissivity value from the night time data. Surface emission radiates not from the subsurface water but from the sea surface. The thermal skin layer on the sea surface, however, is disturbed and disappears under high wind speed over 5 m/s through the analyses of the radiation observation using the emissivity value of 0.984. Under low wind speed, the sea surface can be cooler or warmer than the subsurface due to overlying thermal conditions and the skin layer can be neutral as the transient process between them. By using an emissivity value of 0.984, the temperature difference between the sea surface temperature and the temperature determined from surface irradiance that has been reported in the satellite data analyses is found to be reduced by half. 相似文献

Eight submersible dives between 3000 and 4200 m water depth were made off southern Japan in the eastern Nankai subduction zone. Benthic communities associated with chemosynthetic processes were discovered along the 800 m wide active tectonic zone, at the toe of the accretionary prism. A benthic community was also discovered along a zone of active compression, at the foot of Zenisu Ridge, 30 km south of Nankai Trough. Temperature measurements within the sediments below the benthic communities confirm that upward motion of interstitial water occurs there. Studies of water samples indicate advection of methane and light hydrocarbons. Specimens of the benthic community have been shown to have included in their shells carbonate resulting from methane consumption. Thus the benthic communities are related to overpressure-driven fluid advection along tectonic zones with active surface deformation. A 300 m high active scarp at the toe of the accretionary prism is related to relative motion in a 280° direction which is close to the 305° average direction of subduction in this area. The dives establish further that compressive deformation is presently occurring at the foot of Zenisu Ridge. The previous interpretation of the Zenisu Ridge as a zone of recent north-south intraplate shortening, 40 km south of the Nankai Trench, is confirmed. We conclude that tectonic evolution might well lead to future detachment of the Zenisu Ridge and overthrusting of this large piece of oceanic crust over the continental margin. Such a process might be an efficient one to emplace ophiolites over continents. 相似文献

Abstract An overview of the regional metamorphic belts of Japan is given in the context of the tectonic evolution of the Japanese Islands. The Japanese Islands were situated on an active margin of the Eurasian continent or its constituent landmass before their assembly during the Phanerozoic. The Japanese Islands are composed mainly of metamorphosed and unmetamorphosed accretionary complexes, granitoids and their effusive equivalents that were formed by the Cordilleran-type orogeny. The metamorphic belts are regarded essentially as a deep-seated portion of an accretionary complex. In spite of continuous subduction of oceanic plates beneath the continents, these orogenic rocks were formed quite episodically, as evidenced by discontinuous matrix ages of the accretionary complexes and a striking concentration of isotopic ages of the granitoids. A systematic along-arc age shift of Cretaceous large-scaled granitic magmatism and regional metamorphism suggests a tectonic control such as ridge subduction, which triggered the episodic orogeny. A tectonic model based on the paired metamorphic belts, combined with the non-steady tectonic control, works well to explain this magmatism and metamorphism in a single arc-trench system as a continental margin process. However, the juxtapositional process of the paired metamorphic belts is still a problem. Two possible cases, namely transcurrent displacement and back-arc overthrusting are discussed. 相似文献

Geochemical analyses of lakebed and core sediments from Lake Sambe on the outskirts of Oda City in Shimane prefecture in southwestern
Japan were carried out in order to assess the water quality and the concentration and distribution patterns of sixteen elements.
The lake water showed a stratified condition with respect to dissolved O2, and As, Fe, and Mn concentrations in the bottom layers which increased in the summer. The chemical composition of the sediments,
as measured by X-ray fluorescence, included major and trace elements (P, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sr, Zr, Pb,
and Th), and total sulfur (TS). Elevated values of As, Zn, V, Fe, P, and TS were present in several layers of the upper cores
(from 0 to 5 cm) and other surface sediments. Increases in the abundances of these metals in lake sediments are probably related
to the reducing condition of the sediments, fine-grained organic rich sediments, and post-depositional diagenetic remobilization.
Moreover, correlations between the concentrations of trace metals and iron in the sediments suggest their adsorption onto
Fe (oxy)hydroxides, whereas correlations with sulfur indicate that they were precipitated as Fe-sulfides. The average abundances
of As, Pb, Zn, and Cu exceeded the lowest effect level and Interim Sediment Quality Guideline values that the New York State
Department of Environmental Conservation and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment determined to have moderate
impact on aquatic organisms. In addition, concentrations of As and Zn exceeded the Coastal Ocean Sediment Database threshold
value, indicating potentially toxic levels. Therefore, the presence of trace metals in the lake sediments may result in adverse

The pattern of the ionospheric electric field around the westward travelling surge (WTS) is theoretically studied. This is obtained by solving the current continuity equation at the ionospheric altitude for temporal and spatial development of the field-aligned current density modelled as the WTS phenomenon. The results show that the divergence of the ionospheric electric field is significantly changed depending on the dawn-to-dusk convection electric field E0 because of non-uniformity in the ionospheric conductivity: the ionospheric electric field diverges in the upward current region (around the head of the WTS) when a westward electric field E0 of 10 mV m−1 is uniformly applied. On the other hand, the ionospheric electric field converges without E0. From the observational inference that the ionospheric electric field converges around the head of the WTS, it is suggested that the WTS phenomenon may not be accounted for by the discharging process in the presence of the enhanced dawn-to-dusk convection electric field and non-uniform conductivity as was studied by previous authors. 相似文献

Trace elements in the Geological Survey of Japan carbonate reference materials Coral JCp-1 and Giant Clam JCt-1 were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry after digestion with 2% v/v HNO3 . A standard addition method was adopted in this determination in order to neutralise the Ca matrix effect. In addition, Sc, Y, In and Bi were used as internal standards to control the matrix effect and correct instrumental drift. Of the eighteen elements measured in JCp-1, precisions for fourteen elements, including Cu, Cd and Ba, were better than 10% RSD and concentrations ranged from 0.002 μg g-1 (Cs) to 8.02 μg g-1 (Ba). The concentrations of measured trace elements in JCt-1, except for Cu, were lower than those in JCp-1. Precisions for all elements with concentrations higher than 0.04 μg g-1 in JCt-1 were also better than 10% RSD and concentrations were found to be between 0.001 μg g-1 (Cs) and 4.84 μg g-1 (Ba). The concentrations of more than fifteen trace elements in the aragonite reference materials are reported here for the first time. Both reference materials are suitable for use in geochemical studies of environmental reconstruction based upon biogenic carbonate materials. 相似文献

A fractal theory of rock fragmentation is applied to block-and-ash flow deposits from the Fugendake dome, Unzen Volcano, Kyushu, Japan, in order to analyze the material strength and the energy required for size reduction of the source lava dome. Two fractal dimensions h and Ds, which are mutually interchangeable, represent the relative strength and energy for particles reduced to a given size. They can be theoretically estimated from the power relations of a reference grain size to the cumulative mass and number of fragments smaller than that size. The Unzen–Fugendake block-and-ash flow deposits have been further modified by size sorting and secondary fragmentation that occurred during flowage, so that the h value decreases (or Ds value increases) with increasing distance from the source. Coarse, reversely graded deposits are, however, found to retain the original size population relatively well. The Ds values estimated from deposits of this type are compatible with those previously reported from decompression–fragmentation experiments conducted on the same dome material. The employed fractal approach could thus give insights into the potential mode of dome collapse that generates block-and-ash flows. 相似文献

Mosses are a dominant component of high-arctic terrestrial ecosystems, yet little is known regarding the abundance and diversity of fungi associated with these abundant plants. We investigated vertical patterns of abundance and diversity of fungi and their relationship with chemical properties within profiles of Hylocomium splendens and Racomitrium lanuginosum collected in the Oobloyah Bay area on Ellesmere Island, Canada. The moss profiles were divided into 6 (H. splendens) and 5 (R. lanuginosum) layers according to the color and texture, and hyphal length, fungal assemblages, and contents of organic chemical components (acid-unhydrolyzable residues, total carbohydrates, extractives) and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) were measured. Total hyphal length was greatest at the middle layers of H. splendens and at the deepest layers of R. lanuginosum and was significantly affected by moss species and nutrient contents. A total of 18 and 19 fungal taxa was isolated from the profiles of H. splendens and R. lanuginosum, respectively, with 11 taxa being common to both moss species. Moss species significantly affected the species distribution of fungi. Individual fungal taxa showed patterns of vertical distribution within the moss profiles. The contents of acid-unhydrolyzable residues and nutrients increased and the content of total carbohydrates decreased down the profile, which was attributable to the ability of fungi to decompose carbohydrates selectively and to immobilize nutrients in decomposed moss residues. 相似文献
