Following a major beach closure due to bacterial contamination, a survey of beachgoers was conducted in Huntington Beach, California in 1999 to assess perceived health risk from swimming. Responses were compared to those of beachgoers at the unaffected Laguna Main Beach. No significant differences were found in risk perception. Respondents were aware of the closures (83%), yet the majority (83%) felt the water was safe for swimming. Proximity of residence to the beach was strongly associated with closure awareness (Spearman's rho=0.427, p<0.0001). Although 83% of respondents felt that water quality was important in deciding to go to the beach, only 25% of respondents who did not plan to swim cited pollution or contamination as a reason not to swim. Most respondents (70%) trusted local health agency officials' decisions about when to open/close beaches. Surveyed beach visitors were likely to bathe (84%) and were not highly concerned with swimming-related health risks.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that, during recent years, the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of the large basin of the Swan-Canning Estuary has changed in ways consistent with deteriorating environmental conditions in that estuary. Between 1986/7 and 2003/4, the compositions of that fauna altered markedly at the species and even family levels. Thus, the densities and number of species of molluscs, and especially of crustaceans, which are particularly susceptible to environmental stress, declined, while those of the more tolerant polychaetes increased. However, taxonomic distinctness declined consistently only at one of the four widely-spaced sampling sites and the dispersion of samples did not differ markedly between periods, indicating that the benthic fauna has not undergone such extreme changes as in the nearby Peel-Harvey Estuary. It is thus proposed that benthic macroinvertebrates can act as important indicators of the severity of environmental degradation in microtidal estuaries in regions where such perturbations are increasing.  相似文献

CHAMP satellite data and ground-based magnetic observations are used and combined to map the lithospheric magnetic field over China by means of the revised spherical cap harmonic analysis(R-SHCA)modeling technique.The magnetic field is described to a spatial resolution of 150 km at the mean Earth’s radius,which represents a good compromise between the resolutions afforded by surface and satellite data.We compare the magnetic anomalies modeled at the regional scale with composite regions containing large-scale of tectonic structures.These regions,including the Tarim Basin and the Tibetan Plateau,are correlated with regional magnetic anomalies at satellite altitude but contain a significant number of small-scale and complex magnetic structures at the mean Earth’s radius.These magnetic anomalies are globally consistent with the known geological features in China but also offer a way to delineate the contours of the geological blocks and to discuss the connection between magnetic anomalies and the heat flow distribution in this region.  相似文献

In this paper, we described the applications of two-photon laser confocal scanning microscopy (TPLCSM) for in situ monitoring and visualizing the localizations and movements of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene into living Aegiceras corniculata (L.) Blanco seedlings (A. corniculata). Experimental results demonstrated that all of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were observed entering into the root of A. corniculata and being transmitted to the stem. The transport processes and subsequent storages of the three typical PAHs into A. corniculata were similar. Further studies indicated that the transmission rates of the PAHs in A. corniculata were in the order of naphthalene>phenanthrene>pyrene. Compared with the control group, the growth of the A. corniculata was inhibited by these three specific PAHs, and the inbibitional effect of naphthalene was the most obvious (P<0.05). Furthermore, without the need for sample manipulation or modification this TPLCSM provides us a real-time tool for direct observation of organic chemicals within plants.  相似文献

By comparing benthic foraminiferal and macrofaunal responses to sewage sludge disposal in the Firth of Clyde (Scotland), we wanted to investigate the possibility of using foraminifera as bio-indicators of marine environmental degradation. Both groups present a similar distributional pattern, with poor faunas composed of species tolerant to strong oxygen depletion near to the disposal site, surrounded by high density of opportunistic species. Farther away, faunal density decreases and equilibrium taxa gradually replace opportunistic species. No more environmental impact is perceptible beyond 3 km. Nevertheless, some differences exist: foraminifera appear to be more impacted at the disposal site, probably as a consequence of the low pH, a supplementary stress factor for organisms provided with a calcareous test. At 3 km west of the disposal site, macrofauna is comparable to the reference station, whereas foraminifera still indicate environmental degradation, suggesting their higher sensitivity to this type of pollution. It appears that benthic foraminifera may add valuable information to open marine environmental monitoring.  相似文献
