Carbonaceous matter, which constitutes up to 1% by weight of McArthur River and Mount Isa sulphide ores, occurs both as relatively large discrete flakes and as dispersed films. The flakes, observed on freshly fractured surfaces in the electronprobe, show no clearcut association with other elements. The dispersed films are probably closely related to fine-grained framboidal pyrite, although direct observation in the electron microscope is possible only after demineralization of the original ores. The organic matter in McArthur River ore (84% carbon) is in general more diffusely distributed within the ore than the graphitic material (93% carbon) in the Mount Isa ores. The nature and distribution of carbonaceous matter in these ores is consistent with their genesis under low temperature, sedimentary conditions. — The analytical methods are carefully considered.
Zusammenfassung Die organische Substanz, die bis zu 1 Gewichtsprozent der McArthur River-und Mount Isa Sulfiderze ausmacht, kommt sowohl in der Form von verhältnismäßig großen begrenzten Flocken als auch dispersen Schichten vor. Die frisch gebrochene Oberfläche der Flocken, mit der Elektronensonde untersucht, zeigt keine eindeutige Beziehung zu anderen Elementen. Die dispersen Schichten sind wahrscheinlich nahe verwandt mit feinkörnigem framboidalem Schwefelkies, obwohl eine direkte Beobachtung im Elektronenmikroskop erst nach der Entmineralisierung der ursprünglichen Erze möglich ist. Das ornische Material im McArthur River Erz (84% Kohlenstoff) ist im allgemeinen stärker verstreut innerhalb des Erzes als das graphitische Material (93% Kohlenstoff) in den Mount Isa Erzen. Die Art und Verteilung der carbonischen Substanz in diesen Erzen entspricht ihrer Entstehung bei niedriger Temperatur und sedimentären Bedingungen. — Auf die analytischen Methoden wird genau Bezug genommen.

Geoscience and high-level nuclear waste disposal: the Nordic scene   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In Norden, two countries, Sweden and Finland, are actively engaged in site investigations for the location of deep repositories for spent nuclear fuel from powerproducing nuclear reactors. These investigations are being carried out in crystalline rocks of the Fennoscandian Shield. In Sweden, a long history of site selection has led to the identification and investigation of two sites, Forsmark and Laxemar/Simpevarp, based on a strategy of combining favourable bedrock with consent by the local population. Surface-based geoscientific investigations of the two candidates, with extensive deep drilling, are now drawing to a close. A proposal as to which of the sites would be most suitable for the development of a deep repository will be submitted to the governmental regulatory authorities in 2009. In Finland, the site selection process was shorter and less politically controversial, and led to a "Decision in Principle" by the Finnish parliament, in May 2001, to develop a deep repository at the Olkiluoto site. The access tunnel to an underground rock characterisation facility at 400-500 m depth is at present under construction, accompanied by extensive geoscientific investigations in the subsurface. An application for a construction licence for a deep repository will be submitted in 2012. Although all sites are located in Precambrian crystalline rocks, the Swedish homogeneous granitic rocks, sites both lie in relatively whilst the Finnish site is located in an heterogeneous migmatite complex. The Nordic approach to high-level nuclear waste disposal in crystalline rock will be the theme of a Topical Symposium at the 33rd International Geological Congress at Oslo, in August 2008, and the three sites mentioned above will be the focus of Congress Excursion no. 14.  相似文献

Pillow lavas containing an eclogitic mineral assemblage, locally with glaucophane/crossite, are described from the Tsäkkok Lens within the Seve Nappes, north-central Scandinavian Caledonides. Critical primary relationships to the host metasedimentary rocks which are dominated by marble and quartz-garnet-phengite schist are preserved. It is argued that these clastic rocks, and the ongoing igneous activity in the Tsäkkok Lens, are late Precambrian to Cambrian in age and that these rocks were deposited/emplaced along the outermost part of a continental margin related to the continent Baltica.Variations in the whole-rock chemistry of the eclogitic rocks within the Tsäkkok Lens suggest that most elements were mobile during post-extrusive/intrusive evolution. Only Ti, P and Y show significant magmatic trends in element vs Zr plots. Discriminant diagrams employing the elements Ti, P, Zr, Y, Nb and Cr suggest a tholeiitic protolith with a tendency towards enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB) affinity characterized by a relatively low Zr/Nb ratio. A similarity to metabasic rocks occurring in other Seve thrust sheets but lacking evidence for high-P metamorphism is apparent. A common origin for all these rocks is inferred. The Tsäkkok eclogites formed by in situ high-P metamorphism and provide further evidence for subduction of continental crustal material down to mantle depths. This subduction event has been related to collision of Baltica with an outboard are system during the late Cambrian to early Ordovician.  相似文献

The propagation of cosmic ray electrons in the framework of the Disk-Halo diffusion model in which the diffusion coefficientD z E (wherez is the distance from the galactic plane andE is the energy), and the magnetic fieldHz has been examined by making use of the recently available radio data up to 8 GHz toward the Anticenter (A) and Halo Minimum (M). The following inferences are then made. From the difference in the frequency at which steepening occurs in the radio spectra towardA andH, it is found that the observations are consistent with the magnetic field decreasing withz such that =0.24–0.37. An electron injection spectrum with a single power law down to energies well below 1 GeV cannot explain satisfactorily the observed radio spectra. All observations, however, can be understood in a self consistent way if the observed steepening of the radio spectra, and hence the interstellar electron spectrum, is due partly to the deviation in the power law electron injection spectrum below a few GeV and partly to the first break arising from electron energy losses occurring in the same energy region. In this case, using the value of obtained above and a value of =0.3–0.6, it is found that the spectral index 0 of the injected electrons above a few GeV has a value between 1.9 and 2.3 and the index a value between 0.5 and 1. Contrary to general belief, not all large igneous provinces (LIPs) are characterised by rocks of basaltic composition. Silicic-dominated LIPs, such as the Whitsunday Volcanic Province of NE Australia, are being increasingly recognised in the rock record. These silicic LIPs are consistent in being: (1) volumetrically dominated by ignimbrite; (2) active over prolonged periods (40–50 m.y.), based on available age data; and (3) spatially and temporally associated with plate break-up. This silicic-dominated LIP, related to the break-up of eastern continental Gondwana, is also significant for being the source of >1.4×106 km3 of coeval volcanogenic sediment preserved in adjacent sedimentary basins of eastern Australia.The Whitsunday Volcanic Province is volumetrically dominated by medium- to high-grade, dacitic to rhyolitic lithic ignimbrites. Individual ignimbrite units are commonly between 10 and 100 m thick, and the ignimbrite-dominated sequences exceed 1 km in thickness. Coarse lithic lag breccias containing clasts up to 6 m diameter are associated with the ignimbrites in proximal sections. Pyroclastic surge and fallout deposits, subordinate basaltic to rhyolitic lavas, phreatomagmatic deposits, and locally significant thicknesses of coarse-grained volcanogenic conglomerate and sandstone are interbedded with the ignimbrites. The volcanic sequences are intruded by gabbro/dolerite to rhyolite dykes (up to 50 m in width), sills and comagmatic granite. Dyke orientations are primarily from NW to NNE.The volcanic sequences are characterised by the interstratification of proximal/near-vent lithofacies such as rhyolite domes and lavas, and basaltic agglomerate, with medial to distal facies of ignimbrite. The burial of these near-vent lithofacies by ignimbrites, coupled with the paucity of mass wastage products such as debris-flow deposits indicates a low-relief depositional environment. Furthermore, the volcanic succession records a temporal change in: (1) eruptive styles; (2) the nature of source vents; and (3) erupted compositions. An early explosive dacitic pyroclastic phase was succeeded by a later mixed pyroclastic-effusive phase producing an essentially bimodal suite of lavas and rhyolitic ignimbrite. From the nature and distribution of volcanic lithofacies, the volcanic sequences are interpreted to record the evolution of a multiple vent, low-relief volcanic region, dominated by several large caldera centres.  相似文献

This study examines the remediation of surface water quality in a severely degraded coastal acid sulfate soil landscape. The remediation strategy consisted of partial restoration of marine tidal exchange within estuarine creeks and incremental tidal inundation of acidified soils, plus strategic liming of drainage waters. Time-series water quality and climatic data collected over 5 years were analysed to assess changes in water quality due to this remediation strategy. A time-weighted rainfall function (TWR) was generated from daily rainfall data to integrate the effects of antecedent rainfall on shallow groundwater levels in a way that was relevant to acid export dynamics. Significant increases in mean pH were evident over time at multiple monitoring sites. Regression analysis at multiple sites revealed a temporal progression of change in significant relationships between mean daily electrical conductivity (EC) vs. mean daily pH, and TWR vs. mean daily pH. These data demonstrate a substantial decrease over time in the magnitude of creek acidification per given quantity of antecedent rainfall. Data also show considerable increase in soil pH (2–3 units) in formerly acidified areas subject to tidal inundation. This coincides with a decrease in soil pe, indicating stronger reducing conditions. These observations suggest a fundamental shift has occurred in sediment geochemistry in favour of proton-consuming reductive processes. Combined, these data highlight the potential effectiveness of marine tidal inundation as a landscape-scale acid sulfate soil remediation strategy.  相似文献

Sub-estuaries, i.e. tidal creeks and also larger estuaries that branch off the stem of their main estuary, are commonplace in many estuarine systems. Their physical behaviour is affected not only by tributary inflows, winds and tides, but also by the properties and behaviour of their main estuary. Measurements extending over more than an annual cycle are presented for the Tavy Estuary, a sub-estuary of the Tamar Estuary, UK. Generally, waves are small in the Tavy because of the short wind fetch. A several-hour period of up-estuary winds, blowing at speeds of between 7 and 10 m s−1, generates waves with significant wave heights of 0.25 m and a wave periodicity of 1.7 s that are capable of eroding the bed over the shallow, ca. 1.5 m-deep mudflats. Waves also influence sedimentation within and near salt marsh areas. An estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) occurs in the Tavy's main channel, close to the limit of salt intrusion at HW. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations typically are less than 40 mg l−1 at HW, although concentrations can exceed 80 mg l−1 when tides and winds are strong. Flood-tide SPM inputs to the Tavy from the Tamar are greater during high runoff events in the River Tamar and also at spring tides, when the Tamar has a high-concentration ETM. Higher SPM concentrations are experienced on the mudflats following initial inundation. Without wave resuspension, this is followed by a rapid decrease in SPM for most of the tide, indicating that the mudflats are depositional at those times. SPM concentrations on the mudflats again increase sharply prior to uncovering. Peak ebb tidal speeds at 0.15 m above the mudflat bed can exceed 0.26 m s−1 at spring tides and 0.4 m s−1 following high runoff events, which are sufficient to cause resuspension. Time-series measurements of sediment bed levels show strong seasonal variability. Higher and lower freshwater flows are associated with estimated, monthly-mean sediment transport that is directed out of, or into, the upper sub-estuary, respectively. Seasonal sediment transfers between the estuary and its sub-estuary are discussed.  相似文献

We recorded 101 new rotation lightcurves of five Koronis family members, and then combined the new observations with previous data to determine the objects' sidereal rotation periods, spin vector orientations, and model shape solutions. The observing program was tailored specifically for spin vector analyses by determining single-apparition Lumme–Bowell solar phase coefficients, and by measuring synodic rotation periods precisely enough to unambiguously count the rotations between two consecutive oppositions, which is a prerequisite for identifying the correct sidereal period. The new data make possible first pole and shape determinations for (263) Dresda, (462) Eriphyla, and (1289) Kutaïssi, and they improve the models for (277) Elvira and (534) Nassovia, two objects previously studied by Slivan et al. [Slivan, S.M., Binzel, R.P., Crespo da Silva, L.D., Kaasalainen, M., Lyndaker, M.M., Kr?o, M., 2003. Icarus 162, 285–307]. Our results increase the number of Koronis family spin vectors reported in the literature to fourteen, a sample which now includes the seven largest family members. The spin properties of Eriphyla (rotation period , spin vector obliquity ε=51°) and Kutaïssi (P=3.62 h, ε=165°) are consistent with the markedly nonrandom distribution reported by Slivan [Slivan, S.M., 2002. Nature 419, 49–51], and explained by Vokrouhlický et al. [Vokrouhlický, D., Nesvorný, D., Bottke, W.F., 2003. Nature 425, 147–151] as the result of the effects of thermal “YORP” torques combined with solar and planetary gravitational torques. Dresda (P=16.81 h, ε=16°) is the first prograde Koronis member whose spin obliquity and spin rate significantly differ from the clustered spin properties previously found for other prograde Koronis members; nevertheless, its spin vector is consistent with several of the spin evolution possibilities that were identified in the YORP modeling.  相似文献
