A multidisciplinary approach for rock spreading and block sliding investigation in the north-western coast of Malta 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Landslides are widespread along the north-western coast of the Island of Malta and are strictly linked to the structural setting. Exemplary cases of rock spreading and block sliding phenomena characterise this stretch of coast. They are favoured by the overposition of two different geological units widely outcropping there, the Blue Clay Formation and the Upper Coralline Limestone Formation. The latter forms a wide plateau, bordered by vertical cliffs. At the foot of the cliffs, clayey terrains crop out and develop gentle slopes covered by large blocks detached and moved by rock spreading and block sliding phenomena. These mass movements are favoured by the fragile behaviour of limestones, which cap clays, otherwise characterised by visco-plastic properties. In order to investigate the kinematics and the evolution of these types of coastal landslides, a multidisciplinary and multitechnical approach was applied on a study site, named Il-Prajjet, which provides a spectacular case of rock spreading evolving into block sliding. This paper illustrates the results achieved by means of different engineering geological and geophysical techniques allied with traditional detailed geomorphological survey and mapping. In particular, the surface displacements of the landslides were determined using long-term GPS observations, acquired approximately every 6 months, over a 4.5-year period. A network of GPS benchmarks were distributed on the edge of a limestone plateau affected by rock spreading and on a series of displaced blocks making up a large block slide, finally enabling the definition of the state of activity and the rates of movement to be performed. In addition, the results deriving from two continuous fissurimeters more recently installed at the edge of two persistent joints over the block sliding area are outlined, with reference to the correlation between variations of crack apertures and precipitation input. In order to identify main structural discontinuities and to reconstruct variability of underground surface contact between clays and overlying limestones, Resistivity Tomography profiles and GPR investigations were carried out. Finally, the results obtained by combining the outputs of geophysical surveys and different field monitoring activities can be considered a first step on which numerical models can be developed and validated, in order to assess landslide hazard and risk of this stretch of Maltese coastline. 相似文献

One of the most complex hydrogeological problems in the design and maintenance of drainage systems in abandoned mining sites is quantifying the maximum water infiltration and, therefore, the amount that is potentially drainable by the tunnels. This problem is compounded when water-inflow data are limited or lacking. The aim of the study was to present a single but reliable model for making this evaluation; this model was applied to the case history of the abandoned Cogne iron ore mining complex (Western Alps, Aosta Valley Region, NW Italy). The study focused on quantifying the amount of water infiltrating into the mine drifts, using a water balance model in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. In the model, five different infiltration scenarios were calculated, including a detailed analysis of rainfall data, snow density and thickness (Snow Water Equivalent calculation), and melting periods. The maximum water discharge that could affect the mine tunnels was, therefore, determined under several scenarios of normal precipitation conditions and during heavy rainfall, including the case of the Cogne valley flood in October 2000, used as a reference for the limit conditions. Taking into account the various approximations considered, the results can be considered a good indication of the magnitude of the total amount of water that should be drained out through abandoned mine drifts and in the drainage network during implementation of final closure of the mine. 相似文献

This paper reports experimental data on surface and deep displacements evaluated by means of GPS stations and inclinometers
in two rototranslational deep landslides in a clayey slope of the Italian Southern Apennines. The displacements of the landslides
cause continuous damage to buildings and infrastructures. To study these phenomena and control their effects, the local public
administration provided financial support for a geotechnical investigation that started in 2004. Laboratory tests, in situ
pore pressure and inclinometer measurements were carried out. In July 2006, systems of fixed-in-place inclinometer probes
with continuous data acquisition were installed in two of the eleven guide casings, in correspondence to the slip surfaces
detected by previous periodical measurements. In the meanwhile, a GPS network was installed, consisting in six permanent stations
and ten non-permanent ones. Among the latter, five were installed on the top of five inclinometer casings. The experimental
results show that, in the case under study, the surface displacements evaluated by means of the GPS stations are consistent
with the surface displacements evaluated by means of the inclinometer measurements. This implies mutual data validation, availability
of considerable amount of continuous data, as well as monitoring continuity when, for some reason, one of the instruments

The effectiveness of viscous dampers in mitigating the seismic excitation impacts upon building structures has been widely proved. Recently, with reference to the specific case of equal mass, equal stiffness, shear-type structures, the authors developed a direct practical procedure which gives the mechanical characteristics of the manufactured viscous dampers capable of providing the frame structure with a prescribed value of the first damping ratio. In this paper, a comprehensive rational framework is presented, which allows to formally extend the validity of the proposed procedure to the more realistic case of a generic moment-resisting frame structure. Polarimetry is an area of high energy astrophysics which is still relatively unexplored, even though it is recognized that this type of measurement could drastically increase our knowledge of the physics and geometry of high energy sources. For this reason, in the context of the design of a Gamma-Ray Imager based on new hard-X and soft gamma ray focusing optics for the next ESA Cosmic Vision call for proposals (Cosmic Vision 2015-2025), it is important that this capability should be implemented in the principal on-board instrumentation. For the particular case of wide band-pass Laue optics we propose a focal plane based on a thick pixelated CdTe detector operating with high efficiency between 60–600keV. The high segmentation of this type of detector (1–2mm pixel size) and the good energy resolution (a few keV FWHM at 500keV) will allow high sensitivity polarisation measurements (a few % for a 10mCrab source in 106s) to be performed. We have evaluated the modulation Q factors and minimum detectable polarisation through the use of Monte Carlo simulations (based on the GEANT 4 toolkit) for on and off-axis sources with power law emission spectra using the point spread function of a Laue lens in a feasible configuration. 相似文献

finally determined to study the relationship of QSOs and BL Lacs—then considered rather exotic object—with normal galaxies.
In the years I have continued on this line of research, reacting far too slowly to the wealth of new ideas that Alfonso has
been continuously injecting in our conversations. As examples I will report two recent results on the chemical abundances

It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma-ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between
cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. Such emission can be amplified if cosmic rays penetrate into dense molecular clouds.
The propagation of cosmic rays inside a molecular cloud has been studied assuming an arbitrary energy and space dependent
diffusion coefficient. If the diffusion coefficient inside the cloud is significantly smaller compared to the average one
derived for the galactic disk, the observed gamma-ray spectrum appears harder than the cosmic ray spectrum, mainly due to
the slower penetration of the low energy particles towards the core of the cloud. This may produce a great variety of gamma-ray
