We study the dynamics of the Friedmann–Lemaitre–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) flat cosmological models in which the vacuum energy varies with time,  Λ( t )  . In this model, we find that the main cosmological functions such as the scale factor of the universe and the Hubble flow are defined in terms of exponential functions. Applying a joint likelihood analysis of the recent Type Ia supernovae data, the cosmic microwave background shift parameter and the baryonic acoustic oscillations traced by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies, we place tight constraints on the main cosmological parameters of the  Λ( t )  scenario. Also, we compare the  Λ( t )  model with the traditional Λ cosmology and we find that the former model provides a Hubble expansion which compares well with that of the Λ cosmology. However, the  Λ( t )  scenario predicts stronger small scale dynamics, which implies a faster growth rate of perturbations with respect to the usual Λ cosmology, despite the fact that they share the same equation of state parameter. In this framework, we find that galaxy clusters in the  Λ( t )  model appear to form earlier than in the Λ model.  相似文献

Historical and seismotectonic data from the broader Aegean Region have been collected and all possible information relative to ground deformation associated to earthquakes that hit the area have been re-evaluated. All events associated to co-seismic surface faulting have been selected and further investigated, while geomorphologic and geological criteria have been used to recognise and characterise the seismogenic faults associated to these ‘morphogenic earthquakes’ (sensu [Bull. INQUA 16 (1993) 24]). In particular, in order to perform seismic hazard analyses, we compiled a list of all earthquakes where the surface rupture length (SRL), the maximum vertical displacement (MVD) or the average displacement (AD) is available. We thus obtained reliable values of these source parameters for 36 earthquakes, of which 26 occurred during the 20th century, 6 in the 19th century and the 3 remaining earlier. Magnitude versus SRL and MVD has been compiled for estimating empirical relationships. The calculated regression equations are: Ms=0.90·log(SRL)+5.48 and Ms=0.5·9log(MVD)+6.75, showing good correlation coefficients equal to 0.84 and 0.82, respectively. Co-seismic fault rupture lengths and especially maximum displacements in the Aegean Region have systematically lower values than the same parameters worldwide, but are similar to those of the Eastern Mediterranean–Middle East region. The envelopes of our diagrams are also calculated and discussed for estimating the worst-case scenario. Furthermore, for all investigated seismogenic structures, based on several geological criteria, we measured the ‘geological’ fault length (GFL), which is the total length of the neotectonic faults showing cumulative recent activity. We then compared SRL with GFL and their ratio shows a clear bimodal distribution with a major peak at 0.8–1.0, indicating that about 50% of the investigated earthquakes ruptured almost the entire fault length, while a second peak around the value of 0.5 is clearly related to a segmentation process of longer neotectonic structures. Further implications of this distribution are also discussed. Eventually, from the distribution of GFL versus magnitude we also infer an important geological threshold for the occurrence of ‘morphogenic earthquakes’ at about 5.5 degrees.  相似文献

Northern Thessaly may represent an important seismic gap within the broader Aegean Region, with major faults bordering the ESE–WNW trending Late Pleistocene–Holocene Tyrnavos Basin. In order to obtain information about the characteristics of past earthquakes and improve our knowledge on the seismic potential of the investigated area, historical and archaeological observations are analysed and compared with the results of palaeoseismological trenches excavated across one of the major bordering structures, the Tyrnavos Fault. The former data clearly document (i) a strong seismic activity affecting the area during the last 2–3 ka and (ii) the occurrence of recent earthquakes not included in the seismic catalogues. Also, the sedimentological, structural and chronological data (TL, OSL and AMS) obtained from the palaeoseismological trenches indicate Late Pleistocene to Holocene morphogenic activity of the Tyrnavos Fault, characterised by vertical co-seismic displacements of 20–40 cm and possible return periods of a few thousands of years. Advantages and limitations in using historical and archaeoseismological data are discussed, as well as the problems arising from analysing low slip-rate faults.  相似文献

Naturalization of the flow hydrograph and ice regime is a key step in assessment of ecological and socioeconomic impacts of regulation across large portions of Europe, Asia and North America, where many rivers are dammed for hydropower generation. Building on previous naturalization of early-freshet flows that influence the nature of breakup and jamming events, novel methodology is developed to estimate natural freezeup flows and thence determine associated water levels, also known to influence subsequent breakup events. Using reservoir inflows, the new methodology is applied to the lower portion of the regulated Peace River, Canada, which forms the northern boundary of the Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD), a Ramsar wetland of international importance that partially depends on spring ice-jam flooding for recharge of its high-elevation, or “perched” basins. The PAD provides habitat for numerous aquatic, terrestrial and avian species and is vital to the maintenance of indigenous culture and lifeways. Naturalized freezeup levels in the lower Peace River are shown to be nearly always lower than corresponding regulated values, with the difference averaging ~1.6 m. Consistent with known physics of river ice breakup processes, the present results suggest that ice-jam flood frequency would likely have been greater under natural conditions. Though potentially adverse from the ecological standpoint, reduction of spring ice-jam flooding can benefit riverside communities. Implications of the present results to and comparison with, other Canadian and international rivers are discussed.  相似文献

Soil salinization is an environmental problem having significant impacts on the soil–water–plant system. This problem is more frequent in coastal areas due to seawater intrusion into the land. Assessing the soil salinization is a critical issue for the agricultural areas situated in the Mediterranean basin. This paper examines the deterioration of soil quality in the cultivated land of a Mediterranean site (Agoulinitsa district—West Greece). Soil samples were collected in both pre-irrigation and post-irrigation seasons. Electrical conductivity (EC), pH and the ions Br?, Ca2+, Cl?, F?, K+, Li+, Mg2+, Na+, NH4 +, NO2 ?, NO3 ?, PO4 3? and SO4 2? were determined by the 1:2 (soil/water ratio on weight basis) method. The salts which were present in both seasons in the soils of the area studied are KCl, MgCl2, NaCl, CaSO4 and K2SO4. The wide spatiotemporal variation of EC in the cultivated land in both seasons demonstrates that soil salinity is controlled mainly by seawater intrusion and anthropogenic factors such as the application of salt-rich water which is directly pumped from the drainage ditches. Seawater intrusion provides the affected soil with elevated contents of Ca2+, Cl?, K+, Mg2+, Na+ and SO4 2?. Classification of the soils by using criteria given by the literature is discussed. Practices to prevent, or at least ameliorate, salinization in the cultivated land of Agoulinitsa district are proposed.  相似文献

This is the first landslide inventory map in the island of Lefkada integrating satellite imagery and reports from field surveys. In particular, satellite imagery acquired before and after the 2003 earthquake were collected and interpreted with the results of the field survey that took place 1 week after this strong (Mw?=?6.3) event. The developed inventory map indicates that the density of landslides decreases from west to east. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of landslides was statistically analyzed in relation to the geology and topography for investigating their influence to landsliding. This was accomplished by overlaying these causal factors as thematic layers with landslide distribution data. Afterwards, weight values of each factor were calculated using the landslide index method and a landslide susceptibility map was developed. The susceptibility map indicates that the highest susceptibility class accounts for 38 % of the total landslide activity, while the three highest classes that cover the 10 % of the surface area, accounting for almost the 85 % of the active landslides. Our model was validated by applying the approaches of success and prediction rate to the dataset of landslides that was previously divided into two groups based on temporal criteria, estimation and validation group. The outcome of the validation dataset was that the highest susceptibility class concentrates 18 % of the total landslide activity. However, taking into account the frequency of landslides within the three highest susceptibility classes, more than 85 %, the model is characterized as reliable for a regional assessment of earthquake-induced landslides hazard.  相似文献

In the past two decades, several publications have been presented concerning the recent and active fault geometry, kinematics and geodynamics of the Aegean Region and particularly of the northern sector. Data and results are often contradictory and because of the complexity of the area most hypotheses and models should be considered carefully. The right-lateral movement of the North Anatolia Fault continues into some branches of the North Aegean fault system. There, strike-slip motion along NE–SW trending faults coexists with dip-slip E–W trending faults in the frame of an extensional regime related to N–S crustal stretching. If we take into account the geodynamic environment of the region, several mechanical problems arise. To the east, the Aegean is compressed by the westward convergence of Anatolia, while to the south and west along the Hellenic Arc, a hemiradial compression occurs due to subduction. Although the North Anatolia–North Aegean Trough fault system resembles a restraining bend, the whole area is in fact affected by pure extension and local transtension, along NE–SW trending structures. Accordingly, the major paradox of the area and especially in the western sector (fault termination?) is the occurrence of extension where compression should regionally, or at least locally, predominate.  相似文献

Paleoseismological research by means of trenching in the area that was affected by the Kozani-Grevena strong (Ms = 6.6) earthquake sequence, revealed evidence for past reactivations of the same seismogenic fault. Five trenches were excavated along the Palaeochori-Sarakina part of the fault, in which three surface faulting paleoevents were identified at ca. 8.97, 36.7 and 72.5 ka BP (TL dates). Recurrence interval based on these datings is about 30 ka, which is very long, verifying the ‘low seismicity’ status of the area. On this basis, the 1995 earthquake was an out of sequence event, because the elapse time since the last major event is 8.97 ka instead of 30. Assuming a constant rate of strain accumulation, this would also explain the small amount of surface displacement that was observed during the 1995 earthquake (maximum 18 cm, usually up to 10 cm) in respect to the displacements observed in the trenches (> 25 cm) for previous paleoevents.  相似文献
