Increasingly, remote sensing has become a useful tool for mapping and measuring terrestrial and aquatic environments. Advances in the spatial and spectral resolution of satellite-borne sensors have allowed affordable investigations of littoral macrotidal coastal systems that previously required more costly aircraft-based imagery. In this communication, we compare the results from analysis of a 4 m spatial resolution, multispectral IKONOS satellite image of the intertidal habitats of Islesboro, Maine, USA with that of an aerial compact airborne spectral imager survey of the same regions captured 4 years earlier. There was 72% agreement between the surveys in spite of the temporal gaps between the images. Accuracy varied by habitat class and the perceived error can be assigned to temporal and definitional issues rather than basic acquisition and analytic protocols. Most of the error can be explained by: (1) inadequacy of training sites, (2) temporal variations and (3) class definitions. We conclude that IKONOS imagery provides sufficient spatial and spectral resolution to map and monitor diverse intertidal habitats as found in the macrotidal Gulf of Maine. 相似文献

Viriobenthos in aquatic sediments: variability in abundance and production and impact on the C-cycle

In the last 15 years viruses have been acknowledged as important components of the benthic microbial community, but our understanding of their role in the functioning of aquatic systems remains poor. Viruses can affect bacterial assemblages and mineralization activities, but the extent of their influence remains unclear. We synthesised available data on viriobenthos dynamics to understand which factors drive the variability in their abundance and production and to quantify their influence on the benthic carbon cycle. Results highlighted a large variability in viral abundance (from 2 × 108 to 7 × 109 virus ml?1) and production estimates (from 1 × 107 to 5 × 108 virus ml?1 h?1) obtained with different techniques. This variability limits the comparability of data across studies and indicates the need to improve protocols and develop standard methods. The dynamics of viruses infecting prokaryotes appeared linked to prokaryotic metabolism, supporting the hypothesis that benthic viruses originate directly in the sediment as a result of infection events rather than sinking from the water column. Sediment characteristics (porosity, temperature, depth) appeared to effect viral production, mostly indirectly by influencing bacterial productivity and abundance, but possibly also interfering with the rate of virus–host encounter. Conversely, trophic status appeared unrelated to viral parameters. Viral contribution to carbon turnover appeared low and unrelated to temperature, water depth, trophic status and salinity. More detailed studies are needed to understand the pelagic contribution to the viriobenthos and the extent to which dissolved organic carbon released by viruses is effectively used by bacteria. 相似文献

A joint Monte Carlo and fuzzy possibilistic simulation (MC-FPS) approach was proposed for flood risk assessment. Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate parameter uncertainties associated with inundation modeling, and fuzzy vertex analysis was applied for promulgating human-induced uncertainty in flood damage estimation. A study case was selected to show how to apply the proposed method. The results indicate that the outputs from MC-FPS would present as fuzzy flood damage estimate and probabilistic-possibilistic damage contour maps. The stochastic uncertainty in the flood inundation model and fuzziness in the depth-damage functions derivation would cause similar levels of influence on the final flood damage estimate. Under the worst scenario (i.e. a combined probabilistic and possibilistic uncertainty), the estimated flood damage could be 2.4 times higher than that computed from conventional deterministic approach; considering only the pure stochastic effect, the flood loss would be 1.4 times higher. It was also indicated that uncertainty in the flood inundation modeling has a major influence on the standard deviation of the simulated damage, and that in the damage-depth function has more notable impact on the mean of the fitted distributions. Through applying MC-FPS, rich information could be derived under various α-cut levels and cumulative probabilities, and it forms an important basis for supporting rational decision making for flood risk management under complex uncertainties. 相似文献

The history of the Lateglacial and Preboreal sedimentary succession from the Store Slotseng kettle hole basin, SW Denmark is presented. A tephrostratigraphical and multi‐proxy investigation of the sediments, including stable isotope geochemistry, reveals small‐ and large‐scale changes in the surrounding environment through time. Three distinct tephra horizons are observed. Two of them are identified as the Preboreal Hässeldalen Tephra and the Younger Dryas Vedde Ash. The third was deposited around the Pre‐Bølling/Bølling transition. The Preboreal sediments record two significant decreases in authigenic carbonate content. Using tephrostratigraphy the lower one is identified as occurring during the Preboreal Oscillation, while the upper one is contemporaneous with the Rammelbeek Phase, which by some is recognised above the Preboreal Oscillation. This period has not previously been observed in this region. The discovery of the Hässeldalen Tephra in the Store Slotseng basin expands the known southwestern limit of the ash cloud, and increases the area for potential future observations. The Hässeldalen Tephra (c. 11.3 cal. ka BP) was deposited just prior to the Preboreal Oscillation and as such has a large potential for precise correlation and characterization of this short climatic perturbation. 相似文献

In this study we have obtained 17 cosmogenic exposure ages from three well‐developed moraine systems – Halland Coastal Moraines (HCM), Göteborg Moraine (GM) and Levene Moraine (LM) – which were formed during the last deglaciation in southwest Sweden by the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS). The inferred ages of the inner HCM, GM and LM are 16.7 ± 1.6, 16.1 ± 1.4 and 13.6 ± 1.4 ka, respectively, which is slightly older than previous estimates of the deglaciation based on the minimum limiting radiocarbon ages and pollen stratigraphy. During this short interval from 16.7 ± 1.6 to 13.6 ± 1.4 ka a large part (100–125 km) of the marine‐based sector of the SIS in southwest Sweden was deglaciated, giving an average ice margin retreat between 20 to 50 m a?1. The inception of the deglaciation pre‐dated the Bølling/Allerød warming, the rapid sea level rise at 14.6 cal. ka BP and the first inflow of warm Atlantic waters into Skagerrak. We suggest that ice retreat in southwest Sweden is mainly a dynamical response governed by the disintegration of the Norwegian Channel Ice Stream and not primarily driven by climatic changes. From the viewpoint of precision and reliability of radioisotopic dating, deposits whose quantitative age can be determined through several methods of geochronometry are of special interest. The mutually conforming finite 14C and 230Th/U dates of buried Neopleistocene organic deposits, taken from the Tolokonka section by the North Dvina River (100 km downstream from the city of Kotlas), have been obtained for the first time in Russia. The stratigraphical reference of these results to those obtained via the optically induced luminescence for upper and lower bedding layers has been established. The presented geochronometric data have allowed us to consider the age of oxbow lake organic deposits completely reliable and refer the time of their formation to the Tyrbei warming within the MIS-3. The applicability of the new version of the 230Th/U method for dating of interglacial and interstadial deposits, for the purpose of solving the Middle and Late Neopleistocene chronostratigraphy issues, is confirmed. 相似文献

The Norwegian Channel between Skagerrak, in the southeast, and the continental margin of the northern North Sea, in the northwest, is the result of processes related to repeated ice stream activity through the last 1.1 m yr. In such periods the Skagerrak Trough (700 m deep) has acted as a confluence area for glacial ice from southeastern Norway, southern Sweden and parts of the Baltic. Possibly related to the threshold in the Norwegian Channel off Jæren (250 m deep), the ice stream, on a number of occasions over the last 400 ka, inundated the coastal lowlands and left an imprint of NW‐oriented ice directional features (drumlins, stone orientations in tills and striations). Marine interstadial sediments found up to 200 m a.s.l. on Jæren have been suggested to reflect glacial isostasy related to the Norwegian Channel Ice Stream (NCIS). In the channel itself, the ice stream activity is evidenced by mega‐scale glacial lineations on till surfaces. As a result of subsidence, the most complete sedimentary records of early phases of the NCIS are preserved close to the continental margin in the North Sea Fan region. The strongest evidence for ice stream erosion during the last glacial phase is found in the Skagerrak. On the continental slope the ice stream activity is evidenced by the large North Sea Fan, which is mainly a result of deposition of glacial‐fed debris flows. Northwards of the North Sea Fan, rapid deposition of meltwater plume deposits, possibly related to the NCIS, is detected as far north as the Vøring Plateau. The NCIS system offers a unique possibility to study ice stream related processes and the impact the ice stream development had on open ocean sedimentation and circulation. 相似文献

Recent studies in the Arkhangelsk region, northwest Russia, have identified at least three consecutive tills all associated with the last Valdaian (Weichselian) glaciation. The Scandinavian ice sheet deposited a Late Valdaian till (ca. 17 ka BP), whereas two tills were deposited in the Early–Middle Valdaian by the Barents/Kara Sea ice sheet (ca. 45–60 ka BP) and an older ice sheet with an eastern centre (ca. 74 ka BP). This article expands on previous stratigraphical work on the discrimination of regional till units by a combination of compositional characteristics and directional properties. Tills associated with the Scandinavian ice sheet were deposited by a glacier advancing from west or northwest, transporting predominantly material from the Fennoscandian shield and the White Sea area. The Barents/Kara Sea ice sheet moved from the north and northeast, whereas the oldest ice advance came from the east–southeast. Although, the two oldest tills both contain material with an eastern provenance, the Viryuga Till is dominated more by local carbonate-rich material. This study demonstrates that detailed investigation of till units facilitate the distinction of glacial events imperative for the reconstructing of the last glaciation in northern Russia. 相似文献
