Direct observations of thermal microstructure within the main stream of the Kuroshio show that within the region of the most steeply sloping isotherms, from about 180 to 360 m depth near the current axis, considerable microstructure is present, and the laminae tend to be approximately aligned along the sloping isothermal surfaces rather than horizontally. Away from the axis, the slopes of the isotherms are considerably less so that the tendency for alignment along isotherms, if present, is not noticeable. Laminae rarely if ever extend for as much as 6 miles in the cross-current direction. Lateral temperature variations within individual laminae are small; to the extent that they do occur there is no apparent tendency for density to be conserved.Some of the temperature features seem to correspond to small local maxima in the vertical salinity profile. More experimental evidence and better understanding of STD spiking (from causes other than the time-constant mismatch, which is clearly not the cause here) is required before it can be concluded that these local maxima are real. If real, they would provide evidence that local vertical mixing alone cannot produce the thermal microstructure in this region. The main conclusion, however, is that STD salinity measurements are not very reliable at the present time.  相似文献

A strategy for a successful climate protection convention must highlight the role of equity in order to bring more nations to the bargaining table. The authors propose two commercial energy protocols for consideration by negotiators in this light. The first links international trading in greenhouse-gas emission ‘rights’ to a country's historical per capita carbon emissions. The charge for these rights should be based on the negotiated reduction in global emissions and the demand for them, via the marketplace. The second requires inefficient countries to make steady improvements in energy efficiency or fuel substitution away from carbon as their economies develop.  相似文献

Quantitative evaluation of groundwater/surface water exchange dynamics is universally challenging in large river systems, because existing methodology often does not yield spatially-distributed data and is difficult to apply in deeper water. Here we apply a combined near-surface geophysical and direct groundwater chemical toolkit to refine fresh groundwater discharge estimates to the Colorado River through a 4-km2 wetland that borders the town of Moab, Utah, USA. Preliminary characterization of raw electromagnetic imaging (EMI) data, collected by kayak and by walking, was used to guide additional direct-contact electrical measurements and installation of new monitoring wells. Chemical data from the wells strongly supported the EMI spatial characterization of preferential fresh groundwater discharge embedded in natural brine groundwaters and weighted to the southern wetland section. Inversion of the EMI data revealed sub-meter scale detail regarding bulk electrical conductivity zonation across approximately 15.5 km of transects, collected in only 3 days. This electrical detail indicates processes such as salinization of the unsaturated zone and direct discharge through the Colorado River sediments and a tributary creek bed. Overall, the study contributed to a substantial reduction in fresh groundwater discharge estimates previously made using sparse existing well data and a simplified assumption of diffuse fresh groundwater discharge below the entire wetland. EMI will likely become a widely used tool in systems with natural electrical contrast as groundwater/surface water hydrogeologists continue to recognize the prevalence of preferential groundwater discharge processes.  相似文献

Pollen was collected from modern alluvium and from the atmosphere to document the nature and amount of paleoenvironmental information reflected by alluvial pollen chronologies. Results indicate that pollen in alluvium is a homogeneous mixture derived almost entirely from the floodplain itself. The few pollen grains derived from nonfloodplain plant communities and preserved in alluvial sediments are so well mixed that their frequencies no longer reflect the geographic distribution of the specific plant communities in which they originated. In contrast, the abundance of alluvial pollen grains, derived from the major floodplain taxa (Chenopodiineae, Ambrosia type), varies with summer and winter climate. This annual variation is preserved in alluvial pollen assemblages through a combination of processes within sedimentation basins involving discontinuous deposition events and mechanical pollen degradation. The high-frequency, wide-amplitude pollen variance in alluvial pollen assemblages contrasts with the low-frequency, narrow-amplitude pollen variance in sediments of lakes and ponds. The slight geographic variance in alluvial pollen assemblages, in contrast to the large variance in soil pollen, allows use of alluvial pollen to infer climate throughout the watershed in which pollen is sampled.  相似文献

Under the WCoE/IPL project, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) and ASTER GDEM data were used to analyze factors associated with frequent debris flow and rock-debris avalanche on the Nigeria-Cameroon mountain range. Detailed processing of the ETM+ imageries of the vulnerable portions on the western part of Adamawa plateau was carried out to identify structural trends relatable to the slope failures. The processing identified the structural characteristics of the study area and clearly distinguished the lineaments associated with the debris flow and rock-debris avalanches. The strongly weathered and fragmented gneissic rocks, shallow groundwater table, as well as the distribution of faults and joint sets were significant factors predisposing the slopes to rapid movements. Recent landslides occurred at the locations with high lineament density and in areas close to major faults and long lineaments. The interaction among the moving mass, slope geometry, local geology, topography, and drainage then resulted in a long runout and a high degree of spreading. Analysis of the ASTER–GDEM delineated landforms, slope morphology, and drainage patterns, which was not possible with conventional mapping techniques. Integration of these results yielded reasonable interpretation of the predisposing factors for the long runout failures and provided logical basis for future landslide susceptibility analysis in the area. Accurate investigation of the predisposing factors and characteristics of landslides in environments that have experienced past failures is therefore important in understanding areas that may be susceptible to landsliding in future.  相似文献

We develop a method for spatio-spectral localization of harmonic data on a sphere and use it to interpret recent high-resolution global estimates of the gravity and topography of Venus in the context of geodynamical models. Our approach applies equally to the simple spatial windowing of harmonic data and to variable-length-scale analyses, which are analogous to a wavelet transform in the Cartesian domain. Using the variable-length-scale approach, we calculate the localized RMS amplitudes of gravity and topography, as well as the spectral admittance between the two fields, as functions of position and wavelength. The observed admittances over 10 per cent of the surface of Venus (highland plateaus and tessera regions) are consistent with isostatic compensation of topography by variations in crustal thickness, while admittances over the remaining 90 per cent of the surface (rises, plains and lowlands) indicate that long-wavelength topography is dominantly the result of vertical convective tractions at the base of the lithosphere. The global average crustal thickness is less than 30 km, but can reach values as large as 40 km beneath tesserae and highland plateaus. We also note that an Earth-like radial viscosity structure cannot be rejected by the gravity and topography data and that, without a mechanical model of the lithosphere, admittance values cannot constrain the thickness of the thermal boundary layer of Venus. Modelling the lithosphere as a thin elastic plate indicates that at the time of formation of relief in highland plateaus and tesserae, the effective elastic plate thickness, Te , was less than 20 km. Estimates of Te at highland rises are consistently less than 30 km. Our inability to find regions with Te > 30 km is inconsistent with predictions made by a class of catastrophic resurfacing models.  相似文献

The coordination environment of Fe(II) has been examined in seven anhydrous ferrosilicate glasses at 298 K and 1 bar using 57Fe Mössbauer, Fe K-edge X-ray near edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), UV-Vis-NIR, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies. Glasses of the following compositions were synthesized from oxide melts (abbreviation and nonbridging oxygen:tetrahedral cation ratio (NBO/T) in parentheses): Li2FeSi3O8 (LI2: 1.33), Rb2FeSi3O8 (RB2: 1.33), Nal.08Fel.l7Si3.l3O8 (NAl: 1.09), Nal.46Ca0.24Fel.08Si2.97O8 (NC6: 1.38), Nal.09Ca0.51Fe0.72Si3.10O8 (NC2: 1.15), Na0.99Ca0.92Fe0.24 Si3.17O8 (NCl: 1.04), and Na0.29Mg0.53Ca0.52Fe0.56Al0.91Si2.44O8 (BAS: 1.05). Mössbauer, XANES, and EXAFS information suggests that iron is dominantly ferrous in all glasses (<10 atom% Fe(III)) with an average first-neighbor Fe(II) coordination varying from ∼ 4 to 5.2 (±0.2) oxygens. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of each sample exhibits intense absorption centered near 8100-9200 cm−1 and weak absorption near 5000 cm−l, which cannot be assigned unambiguously. The MCD spectrum of NC6 glass, which is the first such measurement on a silicate glass, shows three transitions at ∼8500 cm−1, ∼6700 cm−1, and ∼4500 cm−1. The behavior of these MCD bands as a function of temperature (1.6 K to 300 K) and magnetic field strength (1 T to 7 T) indicates that they most likely arise from three distinct Fe(II) sites with different ground states, two of which are 5-coordinated and one of which is 4-coordinated by oxygens.The combined results suggest that Fe(II) predominantly occupies 5- and 4-coordinated sites in each glass, with the ratios differing for the different compositions. Small amounts of 6-coordinated Fe(II) are possible as well, but primarily in the more basic glass compositions such as BAS. The substitution of Li(I) for Rb(I) in the M2FeSi3O8 base glass composition causes a weakening of the average Fe(II)-O bond, as indicated by the longer Fe(II)-O distance in the latter. The basalt composition glass was found to have the largest Fe(II) sites relative to those in the other glasses in this study. A bond valence model that helps predict the coordination number of Fe(II) in silicate glasses is proposed. The structural information extrapolated to Fe(II)-bearing melts is parameterized using bond valence theory, which helps to rationalize the melt-crystal partitioning behavior of ferrous iron in natural and synthetic melt-crystal systems.  相似文献
