The mechanisms of interaction between stream life and habitat are often complex and poorly understood. We explored the response of a freshwater crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons) to the functions of large wood with a view towards possible future use of wood in stream restoration in New Zealand. We compared three sub‐reach types within a native forest stream in the central North Island, New Zealand; complex wood‐rich, simple (straight) woodless, and geomorphically complex woodless. Stable logs embedded across the channel created considerable habitat heterogeneity, particularly diversity of substrate, water depths and velocities, that was associated with a significantly higher abundance and biomass of crayfish compared with a straight woodless reach. Although undercut banks in woodless sub‐reaches also supported abundant crayfish, wood increased the proportion of stream area used as habitat, apparently by providing surrogate edge habitat. Wood appeared to increase stream complexity by retaining streambed substrate and providing microhabitat with stable cover.  相似文献

A transformation method is presented by which current profiles (of tidal or wind-induced origin) can be extracted at any horizontal position and moment in time from a vertically integrated, two-dimensional, hydrodynamic numerical model. An arbitrary vertical variation of eddy viscosity can be included in the method, which can incorporate a no-slip bottom boundary condition. The technique assumes that the sea is homogeneous.The method is used to improve the representation of bottom stress within the two-dimensional model, whereby the bottom stress is no longer related simply to the depth-mean current as in the “conventional” two-dimensional, vertically integrated model.Idealized calculations for a range of eddy viscosity profiles, show that elevations, current profiles, and time series of current extracted from this “enhanced” two-dimensional numerical model are in good agreement with currents obtained from a full three-dimensional model.  相似文献

A new model is presented for the propagation of monochromatic surface waves over a region of arbitrary, one-dimensional bottom topography. The smoothly varying bed profile is divided into a series of shelves separated by abrupt steps. The wave fields on either side of each step are related by a “transfer matrix”, and the propagation of waves along the shelf between adjacent steps is described by a “rotation matrix”. Starting from a point where the surface wavefield is known, the step by step application of the appropriate combination of these matrices allows computation of the wavefield over the region of interest. If the individual steps are small then the transfer matrix reduces to a simpler plane-wave form, with considerable savings in computational effort. Comparisons are made with an exact potential solution for single and double steps in order to investigate the accuracy and validity of the matrix method. Finally, the model is applied to the case of wave reflection by fixed sinusoidal bottom undulations, and good agreement is found between its predictions and existing laboratory data.  相似文献

Pervasive carbonatization of metabasalts is characteristic of many large gold-producing regions such as the Timmins district. Weight per cent CO2 however, does not readily identify specific potential gold-bearing targets. Molar CO2/CaO ratios, which reflect proportions of calcite and dolomite, and ppm arsenic are somewhat more effective than weight per cent CO2. The most effective indicator of gold mineralization is provided by a discriminant function involving both molar CO2/CaO and As.  相似文献

The estimation of net radiation within a mature sweet corn canopy is examined using measurements of net radiation at one level above and three levels within the canopy during seven days in 1969. It is shown that Beer's Law, with a constant extinction coefficient, cannot be used to estimate hourly net radiation within the canopy. Functions of zenith angle and relative solar azimuth are incorporated into the model to account for the diurnal variation of optical density. These modifications, which are based on the characteristics of the crop, allow a constant extinction coefficient to be used to calculate hourly net radiation to an acceptable level of accuracy.  相似文献

A detailed petrographic, major and trace element and isotope (Re–Os) study is presented on 18 xenoliths from Northern Lesotho kimberlites. The samples represent typical coarse, low-temperature garnet and spinel peridotites and span a PT range from 60 to 150 km depth. With the exception of one sample (that belongs to the ilmenite–rutile–phlogopite–sulphide suite (IRPS) suite first described by [B. Harte, P.A. Winterburn, J.J. Gurney, Metasomatic and enrichment phenomena in garnet peridotite facies mantle xenoliths from the Matsoku kimberlite pipe, Lesotho. In: Menzies, M. (Ed.), Mantle metsasomatism. Academic Press, London 1987, 145–220.]), all samples considered here have high Mg# and show strong depletion in CaO and Al2O3. They have bulk rock Re depletion ages (TRD) >2.5 Ga and are therefore interpreted as residua from large volume melting in the Archaean. A characteristic of Kaapvaal xenoliths, however, is their high SiO2 concentrations, and hence, modal orthopyroxene contents that are inconsistent with a simple residual origin of these samples. Moreover, trace element signatures show strong overall incompatible element enrichment and REE disequilibrium between garnet and clinopyroxene. Textural and subtle major element disequilibria were also observed. We therefore conclude that garnet and clinopyroxene are not co-genetic and suggest that (most) clinopyroxene in the Archaean Kaapvaal peridotite xenoliths is of metasomatic origin and crystallized relatively recently, possibly from a melt precursory to the kimberlite.

Possible explanations for the origin of garnet are exsolution from a high-temperature, Al- and Ca-rich orthopyroxene (indicating primary melt extraction at shallow levels) or a majorite phase (primary melting at >6 GPa). Mass balance calculations, however, show that not all garnet observed in the samples today is of a simple exsolution origin. The extreme LREE enrichment (sigmoidal REE pattern in all garnet cores) is also inconsistent with exsolution from a residual orthopyroxene. Therefore, extensive metasomatism and probably re-crystallization of the lithosphere after melt-depletion and garnet exsolution is required to obtain the present textural and compositional features of the xenoliths. The metasomatic agent that modified or perhaps even precipitated garnet was a highly fractionated melt or fluid that might have been derived from the asthenosphere or from recycled oceanic crust. Since, to date, partitioning of trace elements between orthopyroxene and garnet/clinopyroxene is poorly constrained, it was impossible to assess if orthopyroxene is in chemical equilibrium with garnet or clinopyroxene. Therefore, further trace element and isotopic studies are required to constrain the timing of garnet introduction/modification and its possible link with the SiO2 enrichment of the Kaapvaal lithosphere.  相似文献

As the majority of the data on Quaternary sediments from the North Sea Basin are seismostratigraphical, we analysed the Elsterian Swarte Bank Formation, the Late Saalian Fisher Formation and the Late Weichselian (Dimlington Stadial) Bolders Bank Formation in order to determine genesis and provenance. The Swarte Bank Formation is a subglacial till containing palynomorphs from the Moray Forth and the northeastern North Sea, and metamorphic heavy minerals from the Scottish Highlands. The Fisher Formation was sampled from the northern and central North Sea. In the north, it is interpreted as a subglacial till, with glaciomarine sediments cropping out further south. These sediments exhibit a provenance signature consistent with the Midland Valley of Scotland, the Eocene of the North Sea Basin, the Grampian Highlands and northeast Scotland. The Bolders Bank Formation is a subglacial till containing palynomorphs from the Midland Valley of Scotland, northern Britain, and a metamorphic heavy‐mineral suite indicative of the Grampian Highlands, Southern Uplands and northeast Scotland. These data demonstrate that there was repeated glaciation of the North Sea Basin during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, with ice sheets originating in northern Scotland. Oxygen isotope ratios from oak tree rings are used to extend the May–August precipitation totals of the England and Wales precipitation series back to 1201 ce. The agreement between instrumental and reconstructed values is unusually strong, with more than half of the variance explained and standard verification tests passed. The stability of this relationship is confirmed using split-period calibration and verification. This allows the reconstruction to be variance-scaled to the full length of the instrumental series back to 1766. Direct comparison with historical reports of very wet and dry summers show good agreement. Near-constant replication, with a minimum of 10 timbers sourced from historic buildings across central southern England ensures signal strength does not change over time. Summers during the late 20th century appear anomalously dry and those of the 21st century very close to the pre-20th century average with no evidence in the record of prolonged ‘megadroughts’ across England and Wales.  相似文献
