The Trobriand Subduction System in the Western Solomon Sea

A south-dipping Subduction system which underlies the Trobriand Trough and 149° Embayment, on the southern margin of the Solomon Sea, is active or was recently active. Oceanic basement is overlain by 2.5 s, two-way travel time (TWTT), of sediment that shows at least two stages of deformation: early thrusts (inner wall) and normal faults (outer wall), and later normal faults that have elevated the outer trench margin. Thrust anticlines and slope basins are developed on the inner wall. The floor of the Solomon Sea Basin arches upward between the Trobriand Trough and the New Britain Trench to form isolated peaks and ridges in the east (152° Peaks) and an east-west Central Ridge in the west. Structures in the subduction system, and in the Solomon Sea Basin, plunge westward towards the point of collision with the New Britain Trench.     

Cypermethrin induces glutathione S-transferase activity in the shore crab,Carcinus maenas

Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that is particularly toxic to crustacea. It is therefore applied as a chemotherapeutant in the salmonid aquaculture industry for the treatment of sea lice infestations. After use, cypermethrin is released directly into the marine environment, to be diluted by fresh seawater. The shore crab, Carcinus maenas is found in the vicinity of fish farms, and may come into contact with released cypermethrin. The detoxification enzyme, glutathione S-transferase (GST) has been implicated in cypermethrin metabolism in terrestrial arthropods, but this has not yet been demonstrated in crustacea. In this paper we investigate the response of GST activity in Carcinus to cypermethrin exposure, and also the time course of the induction process. GST activity is significantly increased in Carcinus exposed to nominal concentrations of 50 and 500 ng/l of water-borne cypermethrin. Carcinus demonstrate a significant elevation in GST activity following intra-cephalothoracic injection with 10 ng of cypermethrin. GST activity returns to basal levels after 36 h. The potential application of GST activity in Carcinus as a biomarker of cypermethrin exposure is discussed.     

Induction of cytochrome p-450 monooxygenase activities in plaice by ‘model’ inducers and drilling muds

The hepatic cytochrome P-450-dependent monooxygenase system of the marine fish plaice has been characterised by i.p. injection with chemical inducing agents, followed by measurement of a variety of monooxygenase activities. The results suggest that more than one isozyme is present in these fish. The response to oil-based drilling fluids, a major contaminant of the North Sea, has also been examined and indicates that more than one isozyme is responsive to these products.     

Multifrequency study of the nuclei of Sbc galaxies

A sample of 100 Sbc galaxies has been observed at different wavelengths and resolutions. The ultimate aim of the project is to probe the origin of their nuclear activity, e.g., blackhole, starbust, etc.The results from radio observations with the VLA (New Mexico) at 20 and 6 cm, with a resolution of 1–2 arc sec, for the inner kpc of nineteen sources are presented. Six of the galaxies show extended emission consistent with starburst activity. The remaining thirteen are unresolved or marginally resolved compact sources. Their steep spectra indicate synchrotron emission. They show total nuclear energies similar to those found for a sample of Seyfert galaxies.Optical spectroscopic observations with a similar resolution to the radio data have been made for approximately 90 galaxies. A sample of the derived rotation curves is included.
