The dynamic character of the phase transition in anorthite from Monte Somma has been studied by high-temperature hard mode infrared spectroscopy. The mean local order parameter, as revealed by the temperature evolution of the frequencies of absorption bands between 540 and 620 cm-1, follows classical second-order Landau behaviour with a critical exponent β = 1.. There is no observable first-order step. Anomalous line broadening of the 582 cm-1 band indicates that dynamic fluctuations with a relaxation time τ ≈ 10−10 s exist over a limited temperature interval of approximately 150 K about Tc, and decay rapidly as T becomes greater than Tc. Previous order-disorder models of the high-temperature phase are not supported by these results. The Ca-flip motions, which we link to the line broadening, stabilize the driving soft mode of the transition. These flip motion fluctuations do not give rise to departures from the classical Landau theory because of the essential co-elastic nature of the phase transition. In the light of these results the structural instability can be described as an essentially displacive transition.  相似文献

In this paper, quasistatic models are developed for the slow flow of compressible fluids through porous solids, where the solid exhibits fading memory viscoelasticity. Problems of this type are important in practical geomechanics contexts, for example, in the context of fluid flow through unconsolidated reservoir sands and of wellbore deformation behaviour in gas and oil shale reservoirs, all of which have been studied extensively. For slow viscous fluid flow in the poro-viscoelastic media we are able to neglect the dynamic effects related to inertia forces, as well as the dissipation associated with the viscous flows. This is in contrast to the vast body of work in the poro-elastic context, where much faster flow of the viscous fluids may give rise to memory effects associated with microflows in pores of the solid media. Such problems have been treated extensively in both the dynamic and quasistatic cases. We are taking a specific type of the porous medium subject to slow deformation processes possibly inducing moderate pressure gradients and flow rates characterised by negligible inertia effects. As the result of homogenisation of such a two-phase medium, we observe the fading memory behaviour in the Biot modulus which controls the pressure increase due to skeleton macroscopic deformation and pore fluid content. Although our derivation leads to a result which is consistent with the formal phenomenological approach proposed by Biot (J Appl Phys 23:1482–1498, 1962), we offer the reader more insight into the structure of the poro-viscoelastic constitutive relations obtained; in particular, we can show that the Biot compressibility evolves in time according to the creep function while the skeleton stiffness is driven by the relaxation function.  相似文献

Alluvial channel bed incision and bank widening have been reported in both the south‐western and south‐eastern US throughout the past century. Distinct regional differences in climate and landscape properties likely influence the rate of erosion. This study discusses regional differences in hydraulic driving forces and substrate resistance and tests the hypothesis that regional differences exist in average rates of channel incision, bank erosion, and knickpoint retreat. Specifically, we hypothesize that erosion rates are higher in south‐western US streams and reason that this is because of greater flood magnitudes and limited substrate resistance. A review of the literature documenting incision, bank erosion, and knickpoint retreat, however, indicates that intra‐regional differences are larger than inter‐regional differences and that average rates in the south‐western US are either statistically similar or less than the rates in parts of the south‐eastern US. This could either be a result of strong intra‐regional hydroclimatic and substrate variability or because average erosion rate may not be an appropriate metric for inter‐regional comparisons because of the variability between case studies associated with the field methods to measure erosion, duration of study period, and time since disturbance to the channel. Nevertheless, these findings provide a basis for future evaluations of the relative importance of different controls on driving and resisting forces in these and other landscapes characterized by rapid channel incision and arroyo formation. X-ray emission from a comet was observed for the first time in 1996. One of the mechanisms believed to be contributing to this surprisingly strong emission is the interaction of highly charged solar wind ions with cometary gases. Reported herein are total absolute charge-exchange and normalized line-emission (X-ray) cross sections for collisions of high-charge state (+3 to +10) C, N, O, and Ne ions with the cometary species H2O and CO2. It is found that in several cases the double charge-exchange cross sections can be large, and in the case of C3+ they are equal to those for single charge exchange. Present results are compared to cross section values used in recent comet models. The importance of applying accurate cross sections, including double charge exchange, to obtain absolute line-emission intensities is emphasized.  相似文献

Numerical integration of a meteor stream over a long period is a very time consuming process, especially if a number of different models have to be investigated. In this paper we demonstrate that using the distribution of orbital energy as a vector in a Markov process can be a useful tool and that meaningful results can be obtained with far less computation than is normally required.  相似文献

The hydrodynamic properties of a pair of long floating pontoon breakwaters of rectangular section are investigated theoretically. The structures are partially restrained by linear symmetric moorings fore and aft. The fluid motion is idealized as linearized, two-dimensional potential flow. The breakwater motions are assumed to be two-dimensional, in surge, heave and pitch. The solution for the fluid motion is obtained by the boundary integral equation method using an appropriate Green's function. Numerical results are presented that illustrate the effects of the various wave and structural parameters on the efficiency of the breakwaters as barriers to wave action. It is found that the wave reflection properties of the structures depend strongly on their width, draft and spacing and the mooring line stiffnesses, while their excess buoyancy is of lesser importance.  相似文献

The fission track technique was used not only to determine the U distribution, but indirectly, to locate the host minerals of other incompatible elements such as P, Ti, Y, Zr and Nb in spilitic pillow lavas from SW England. The majority of U was introduced early in the alteration process probably due to interaction with sea-water. At a later stage in the process, these elements, some previously considered to be relatively immobile during low-grade alteration, were mobilised and subsequently redeposited in stable secondary phases. The hydrothermal fluid responsible for mobility was rich in CO2 and H2O. Carbonate complexes were the most likely mobile species.  相似文献

High energy, rocky coastlines often feature sandy beaches within headland‐bound embayments. Not all such embayments have beaches however, and beaches in embayments can be removed by storms and may subsequently reform. What dictates the presence or absence of an embayed beach and its resilience to storms? In this paper, we explore the effect of offshore slope and wind conditions on nearshore sediment transport within idealised embayments to give insight into nearshore sediment supplies. We use numerical simulations to show that sand can accumulate near shore if the offshore slope is >0.025 m/m, but only under persistent calm conditions. Our modelling also suggests that if sediment in an embayment with an offshore gradient steeper than 0.025 m/m is removed during a period of persistent stormy conditions, it will be unlikely to return in sub‐decadal timescales. In contrast, sediment located in embayments with shallower gradients can reform swiftly in both calm and stormy conditions. Our findings have wide implications for contemporary coastal engineering in the face of future global climate change, but also for Quaternary environmental reconstruction. Our simple method to predict beach stability based on slope can be used to interpret differing responses of embayments to periods of changing coastal storminess such as the medieval climate anomaly‐little ice age (MCA‐LIA) transition. © 2018 The Authors. The uranium-series isotope signatures of the suspended and dissolved load of rivers have emerged as an important tool for understanding the processes of erosion and chemical weathering at the scale of a watershed. These signatures are a function of both time and weathering-induced fractionation between the different nuclides. Provided appropriate models can be developed, they can be used to constrain the residence time of river sediment. This chronometer is triggered as the bedrock starts weathering and the inferred timescale encompasses the residence time in the weathering profile, storage in temporary sediment deposits (e.g. floodplain) and transport in the river. This approach has been applied to various catchments over the past five years showing that river sediments can reside in a watershed for timescales ranging from a few hundreds of years (Iceland) to several hundreds of thousands of years (lowlands of the Amazon). Various factors control how long sediment resides in the watershed: the longest residence times are observed on stable cratons unaffected by glacial cycles (or more generally, climate variability) and human disturbance. Shorter residence times are observed in active orogens (Andes) or fast-eroding, recently glaciated catchments (Iceland). In several cases, the residence time of suspended sediments also corresponds to the time since the last major climate change. The U-series isotope composition of rivers can also be used to predict the river sediment yield assuming steady-state erosion is reached. By comparing this estimate with the modern sediment yield obtained by multi-year sediment gauging, it is clear that steady-state is seldom reached. This can be explained by climate variability and/or human disturbance. Steady-state is reached in those catchments where sediment transport is rapid (Iceland) or where the region has been unaffected by climate change and/or human disturbance. U-series are thus becoming an important tool to study the dynamics of erosion.  相似文献

Tourmalinization associated with peraluminous granitic intrusions in metapelitic host-rocks has been widely recorded in the Iberian Peninsula, given the importance of tourmaline as a tracer of granite magma evolution and potential indicator of Sn-W mineralizations. In the Penamacor-Monsanto granite pluton (Central Eastern Portugal, Central Iberian Zone), tourmaline occurs: (1) as accessory phase in two-mica granitic rocks, muscovite-granites and aplites, (2) in quartz (±mica)-tourmaline rocks (tourmalinites) in several exocontact locations, and (3) as a rare detrital phase in contact zone hornfels and metapelitic host-rocks. Electron microprobe and stable isotope (δ18O, δD, δ11B) data provide clear distinctions between tourmaline populations from these different settings: (a) schorl–oxyschorl tourmalines from granitic rocks have variable foititic component (X□ = 17–57 %) and Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios (0.19–0.50 in two-mica granitic rocks, and 0.05–0.19 in the more differentiated muscovite-granite and aplites); granitic tourmalines have constant δ18O values (12.1 ± 0.1 ‰), with wider-ranging δD (?78.2 ± 4.7 ‰) and δ11B (?10.7 to ?9.0 ‰) values; (b) vein/breccia oxyschorl [Mg/(Mg + Fe) = 0.31–0.44] results from late, B- and Fe-enriched magma-derived fluids and is characterized by δ18O = 12.4 ‰, δD = ?29.5 ‰, and δ11B = ?9.3 ‰, while replacement tourmalines have more dravitic compositions [Mg/(Mg + Fe) = 0.26–0.64], close to that of detrital tourmaline in the surrounding metapelitic rocks, and yield relatively constant δ18O values (13.1–13.3 ‰), though wider-ranging δD (?58.5 to ?36.5 ‰) and δ11B (?10.2 to ?8.8 ‰) values; and (c) detrital tourmaline in contact rocks and regional host metasediments is mainly dravite [Mg/(Mg + Fe) = 0.35–0.78] and oxydravite [Mg/(Mg + Fe) = 0.51–0.58], respectively. Boron contents of the granitic rocks are low (<650 ppm) compared to the minimum B contents normally required for tourmaline saturation in granitic melts, implying loss of B and other volatiles to the surrounding host-rocks during the late-magmatic stages. This process was responsible for tourmalinization at the exocontact of the Penamacor-Monsanto pluton, either as direct tourmaline precipitation in cavities and fractures crossing the pluton margin (vein/breccia tourmalinites), or as replacement of mafic minerals (chlorite or biotite) in the host-rocks (replacement tourmalinites) along the exocontact of the granite. Thermometry based on 18O equilibrium fractionation between tourmaline and fluid indicates that a late, B-enriched magmatic aqueous fluid (av. δ18O ~12.1 ‰, at ~600 °C) precipitated the vein/breccia tourmaline (δ18O ~12.4 ‰) at ~500–550 °C, and later interacted with the cooler surrounding host-rocks to produce tourmaline at lower temperatures (400–450 °C), and an average δ18O ~13.2 ‰, closer to the values for the host-rock. Although B-metasomatism associated with some granitic plutons in the Iberian Peninsula seems to be relatively confined in space, extending integrated studies such as this to a larger number of granitic plutons may afford us a better understanding of Variscan magmatism and related mineralizations.  相似文献
