We analyze the variability of the ambient magnetic field near Titan during Cassini encounters TA-T62 (October 2004-October 2009). Cassini magnetometer (MAG) data show that the moon's magnetic environment is strongly affected by its proximity to Saturn's warped and highly dynamic magnetodisk. In the nightside sector of Saturn's magnetosphere, the magnetic field near Titan is controlled by intense vertical flapping motions of the magnetodisk current sheet, alternately exposing the moon to radially stretched lobe-type fields and to more dipolar, but highly distorted current sheet fields. In southern summer, when most of the Cassini encounters took place, the magnetodisk current sheet was on average located above Titan's orbital plane. However, around equinox in August 2009, the distortions of Titan's magnetic environment due to the rapidly moving current sheet reached a maximum, thus suggesting that the equilibrium position of the sheet at that time was significantly closer to the moon's orbital plane. In the dayside magnetosphere, the formation of the magnetodisk lobes is partially suppressed due to the proximity of the magnetopause. Therefore, during most encounters that took place near noon, Titan was embedded in highly distorted current sheet fields. Within the framework of this study, we not only provide a systematic classification of all Titan flybys between October 2004 and October 2009 as lobe-type or current sheet scenarios, but we also calculate the magnetospheric background field near Titan's orbit whenever possible. Our results show that so far, there is not a single Cassini flyby that matches the frequently applied picture of Titan's plasma interaction from the pre-Cassini era (background field homogeneous, stationary and perpendicular to the moon's orbital plane). The time scales upon which the ambient magnetospheric field close to Titan undergoes significant changes range between only a few minutes and up to several hours. The implications for the development of numerical models for Titan's local plasma interaction are discussed as well.  相似文献

Tag recovery rate is an important parameter for estimating exploitation and natural mortality in fished populations. Passive integrated transponder (PIT) technology can record 100% of PIT tagged animals passing within the detection limit of a PIT tag scanner. However PIT tags and PIT tag scanners are expensive compared with conventional visual tags and PIT tags are not detectable without scanners. We used simulation to evaluate the hybrid PIT tag which has the PIT tag incorporated into a conventional tag allowing both electronic detection capability by a scanner and visual detection by fishers. Simulated estimates of the precision and accuracy of exploitation and natural death rates for two lobster fishery management regimes: a 7‐month season for both sexes and a fishery with a 10‐ and 6‐month season for males and females, respectively, were used to determine the benefit of PIT tags. For a project budget of AU#DL200,000, hybrid PIT tags and 10% of the fleet being equipped with scanners produced more precise and accurate estimates of exploitation rate and natural death rate until tag reporting rate by fishers exceeds 40% for the two‐gender management regime and 90% for the 7‐month combined sex regime. Increasing the number of scanners to 20% of the fleet resulted in fewer hybrid PIT tags being inserted for the same cost and did not improve the precision or accuracy of estimates. Increasing the number of lobsters tagged by tagging during a higher catch rate period improved the precision of exploitation and natural death rate estimates at lower tag reporting rates for the conventional tag scenario, but did not alter the tag reporting rate required to make conventional tagging more beneficial than hybrid PIT tagging. Increased tag reporting rate by the 90% of the fleet that were not equipped with scanners had no significant impact on the precision or accuracy of estimates for either management regime.  相似文献

The fecundity of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) was estimated from maturing fish captured by anglers in the lower Waitaki River in 1985 and 1987–89, and from mature fish spawned at the Glenariffe Research Station on the Rakaia River in 1992. Fecundity was positively correlated with fork length (FL); estimated fecundities at 750 mm FL were 5024 eggs for Waitaki and 4829 eggs for Glenariffe salmon. The slopes of the regressions of fecundity on FL differed between the populations but the Glenariffe data did not differ from Rakaia River samples from 1967, 1973, and 1976. Significant inter‐annual variation in the FL‐fecundity relationship was detected in Waitaki River samples. Egg weights, taken from the Glenariffe samples, were positively correlated with length and averaged 0.17 g. However, salmon with high fecundity for their FL tended to have small eggs, and vice versa.  相似文献

Estuarine and sheltered coastal habitats that contain physical structure are potentially important nurseries for juvenile fish. Many of these structured habitats, however, are potentially vulnerable to stressors such as elevated turbidity. Quantifying the benefits that structured habitats provide to juvenile fish may therefore be an important step in the management process. We investigated the value of structured habitat for juvenile fishes in northeastern New Zealand, using artificial seagrass units (ASUs) with varying blade density. ASUs were predominantly settled by juvenile snapper (Pagrus auratus) and spotty (Notolabrus celidotus). The density of both snapper and spotty was greatest on ASUs with the highest blade density. For snapper, a gradient in abundance was present (with higher abundance closer to the harbour mouth), suggesting either a gradient in the supply of recruits or a potential recruitment shadow effect. The size distribution of juvenile snapper (12–70 mm fork length) was very similar on both sampling trips, despite the 2‐month interim period, suggesting an ontogenetic habitat shift dependent on size. The condition of juvenile snapper from ASUs with the highest blade density was also greater than the other ASU treatments. Overall, these results provide new empirical evidence that habitats with physical structure within shallow estuarine systems are important to early stage juvenile fishes such as snapper, and indicate that the location‐specific context of that habitat is also likely important.  相似文献

The importance of near real‐time access to environmental data has increased steadily over the last few years. In this article, the focus is on the European Environment Agency (EEA), which receives environmental data from a large number of providers. The heterogeneous data formats and data transfer mechanisms make the data collection and integration a difficult task for the EEA. An approach is needed for facilitating the interoperable exchange of environmental data on a large scale. A core element of this approach is the Sensor WebEnablement (SWE) technology of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) which allows the standardized, interoperable, vendor and domain independent exchange of sensor data. The main contribution of this article is a lightweight profile for the OGC Sensor Observation Service that ensures the necessary interoperability for seamlessly integrating the environmental data provided by the EEA's member states and thus forms the foundation for the developed data exchange mechanisms. This is complemented by information about the resulting Sensor Web architecture and the integration into the EEA's existing IT infrastructure. In summary, this article describes a practical scenario in which SWE technology enables the exchange of near real‐time environmental data on a large scale.  相似文献

This contribution reports our preliminary work to determine Cu isotope ratios for various granite rocks and examine the Cu isotope systematics within granite suites. A chemical procedure, modified from Maréchal [Maréchal, C.N., Télouk, P. and Albarède, F., 1999. Precise analysis of copper and zinc isotopic compositions by plasma-source mass spectrometry. Chemical Geology, 156(1–4): 251–273.], was used to separate Cu from rock matrix. Quantitative recovery (100.6 ± 1.6%), with a low total procedural blank (2.65 ± 0.66 ng) for Cu, has been achieved, allowing Cu isotopic measurements on samples with as little as 10 ppm Cu. The Cu isotope ratios (δ65Cu relative to NIST SRM 976) of 32 rock samples, ranging from mafic to felsic compositions, from 3 batholiths (2 I-type, 1 S-type) from the Lachlan Fold Belt in southeastern Australia, vary from ? 0.46‰ to 1.51‰. Most of them cluster around zero, with mean values for the I-type and S-type granites of 0.03 ± 0.15‰ and ? 0.03 ± 0.42‰ (2 sigma) respectively. These data, together with Cu isotope ratios of two loess samples, provide preliminary evidence that the baseline Cu isotopic composition of the crystalline part of upper continental crust is close to zero. The tight clustering of Cu isotope ratios of rocks from the I-type suites suggests that high-temperature magmatic processes do not produce significant Cu isotope fractionation. However, two granites with abnormally heavy Cu isotope signatures (up to 1.51‰) appears to be the result of localized hydrothermal alteration. Measurable variation in Cu isotopic composition of the S-type granite may reflect isotopic heterogeneity in the sedimentary source region as a result of redox processes or may be due to hydrothermal overprinting. Thus, Cu isotope geochemistry may be a useful tracer for studying hydrothermal alteration and source heterogeneity of granitic rocks.  相似文献

The solubility and partitioning of Pt in a S-free vapor - brine - rhyolite melt - Pt metal assemblage has been quantified at 800 °C, fO2=NNO and pressures of 100 and 140 MPa. Vapor and brine were sampled at run conditions by trapping these phases as glass-hosted fluid inclusions as the melt cooled through the glass transition temperature. The vapor and brine were in equilibrium with the melt at the time of trapping and, thus, represent fluids which were sampled at the termination of each experimental run. The microthermometrically determined salinities of vapor and brine are ∼2 and ∼63 wt.% NaCl eq. and ∼9 and ∼43 wt.% NaCl eq. at 100 and 140 MPa, respectively. Platinum solubilities in vapor, brine and glass (i.e., quenched melt) were quantified by using laser ablation - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Equilibrium is discussed with reference to the major and trace element concentrations of glass-hosted fluid inclusions as well as the silicate melt over run times that varied from 110 to 377 h at 140 MPa and 159 to 564 h at 100 MPa. Platinum solubility values (±1σ) in H2O-saturated felsic melt are 0.28 ± 0.13 μg/g and 0.38 ± 0.06 μg/g at 140 and 100 MPa, respectively. Platinum solubility values () at 140 and 100 MPa, respectively, in aqueous vapor are 0.91 ± 0.29 μg/g and 0.37 ± 0.17 μg/g and in are brine 16 ± 10 μg/g and 3.3 ± 1.0 μg/g. The measured solubility data were used to calculate Nernst-type partition coefficients for Pt between vapor/melt, brine/melt and vapor/brine. The partition coefficient values () for vapor/melt, brine/melt and vapor/brine at 140 MPa are 2.9 ± 1.0, 67 ± 27, and 0.13 ± 0.05 and at 100 MPa are 1.0 ± 0.2, 6.8 ± 2.4, and 0.15 ± 0.05. The partitioning data were used to model the Pt-scavenging capacity of vapor and brine during the crystallization-driven degassing (i.e., second boiling) of a felsic silicate melt over a depth range (i.e., 3-6 km) consistent with the evolution of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits. Model calculations suggest that aqueous vapor and brine can scavenge sufficient quantities of Pt, and by analogy other platinum group elements (PGE), to produce economically important PGE-rich magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits in Earth’s upper continental crust.  相似文献

The presence of glacial sediments across the Rauer Group indicates that the East Antarctic ice sheet formerly covered the entire archipelago and has since retreated at least 15 km from its maximum extent. The degree of weathering of these glacial sediments suggests that ice retreat from this maximum position occurred sometime during the latter half of the last glacial cycle. Following this phase of retreat, the ice sheet margin has not expanded more than ∼ 1 km seaward of its present position. This pattern of ice sheet change matches that recorded in Vestfold Hills, providing further evidence that the diminutive Marine Isotope Stage 2 ice sheet advance in the nearby Larsemann Hills may have been influenced by local factors rather than a regional ice-sheet response to climate and sea-level change.  相似文献

Assessments of carbonate platform reef–lagoon sediments and benthic habitats around Rodrigues Island (south-west Indian Ocean) have been undertaken in order to examine carbonate sediment textural properties and the controls on texturally-defined sediment fabrics. Reef–lagoon sediments, sampled from across the expansive (~ 8 km wide) carbonate-dominated windward platform, principally comprise poorly sorted medium- to coarse-grained bioclastic sands, composed of a low diversity of grain constituents — predominantly non-geniculate coralline algal bioclasts. Despite a marked homogeneity in sediment compositional and grain size properties, eight distinct sediment textural groups can be identified that form a heterogeneous mosaic across the contemporary reef–lagoon system. Only along the narrow outer platform margins (reef crest, sand apron and outermost lagoon environments) do we observe consistent (predictable) transitions in sediment textural groups, where physical processes are the primary drivers of selective sediment transport and sorting. In contrast, across the main expanse of the lagoon, the sediment substrates are characterised by an irregular mosaic of texturally-defined sediment groups — formed primarily as a function of sediment bio-retexturing. The burrowing activities of alpheid and callianassid shrimps are particularly important in this respect and impart a distinctly unique textural fabric to the upper sediment horizons in the environments in which the respective organisms occur. The consequence of this is that, at the platform system scale, individual, texturally-defined sediment groups are relatively poor indicators of prevailing hydrodynamic regimes or of local sediment production, reflecting more the biological action of organisms inhabiting the substrate. This has important implications for understanding the development of carbonate sediment fabrics in the context of palaeoenvironmental reconstructions and for interpreting a key diagnostic criteria of carbonate microfacies.  相似文献
