Pressures on braided river systems in New Zealand are increasing due to anthropogenic stresses such as demand for irrigation water, braidplain conversion to farmland and invasive vegetation, as well as extreme natural events associated with earthquakes and climate change. These pressures create issues around preserving braided river physical environments and associated ecosystems, and managing hazards such as floods, aggradation and erosion. A need for more robust understanding and quantification of braided river morphodynamic processes underpins many of these issues. Here, we present eight morphodynamic research challenges to service this need. The first four research challenges relate to managing aggradation-related flooding hazards; the last four address issues stem largely from recent dairy expansion, which has created huge pressure to take land and irrigation water from the alp-fed braided rivers and to alter flow regimes at their mouths. Hāpua, the freshwater lagoons found where most braided rivers meet the coast, show complex morphodynamic behaviour in response to the interplay of river and coastal processes, and their special ecosystems are sensitive to river flow and sediment load changes. We discuss how physical laboratory experiments and novel numerical modelling can help to understand the morphological processes braided rivers undergo, and we show how those research advances could inform planning and legal decisions to regulate land rights and irrigation water allocation on New Zealand's braidplains. We illustrate these environmental and engineering issues and research challenges with examples from the Kowhai, Waiho, Waiau, Rangitata and Hurunui Rivers. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Daytime variations of ozone eddy fluxes to maize   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The vertical fluxes of ozone, momentum and heat in the atmospheric surface layer have been measured by eddy correlation above both mature and senescent maize canopies. Aerodynamic formulae are applied to find that the bulk canopy surface resistancer c to ozone uptake and destruction varies between 4.0 and 0.5 s cm−1 during the daytime. Apparently, surface properties tend to control the removal of ozone at the surface of the earth. For a lush canopy, the stomatal diffusion resistance is the most important property, while changes in surface temperature have little effect. Destruction at the soil and exterior plant surfaces appears to account for 20–50% of the total loss if leaf mesophyll resistances are assumed to be very small. Free water at leaf surfaces may at times inhibit ozone removal by both senescent and healthy plants.  相似文献

E-region electron density profiles with high resolution in time and altitude (5 s and 2 km, respectively) measured by the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar are used to examine the conductivity changes during substorm growth, onset and expansion phases for seven substorms occurring in the local evening sector. The measurements are related to electric fields and neutral winds measured by the radar, to ground magnetometer and riometer records, and to optical features, including the westward-travelling surge and auroral bulge. Auroral features are identified using all-sky camera photographs and images from the Viking satellite. Conductances and electric fields in the zone of diffuse aurora corresponding to the westward substorm electrojet are found to be consistent with existing models. Conductances in the discrete auroral arcs marking the expanding edge of the substorm are found to be much higher, and electric fields rather lower, than previously assumed. The magnetic signatures of the discrete arcs are found to be best explained by Hall and Pedersen currents driven by a southward neutral wind, as is observed by the radar. The highest conductances observed, with Hall and Pedersen conductances reaching 120 and 48 S, respectively, are found to be associated with arcs appearing at the southern edge of activity in the vicinity of a westward-travelling surge.  相似文献

We present an overview of the low-frequency array (LOFAR) that will open a window on one of the last and most poorly explored regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. LOFAR will be a large (baselines up to 400 km), low-frequency aperture synthesis array with large collecting area ( at ) and high resolution (1.5 at 100 MHz), and will provide sub-mJy sensitivity across much of its operating range. LOFAR will be a powerful instrument for solar system and planetary science applications as reviewed by papers in this monogram. Key astrophysical science drivers include acceleration, turbulence, and propagation in the galactic interstellar medium, exploring the high red-shift universe and transient phenomena, as well as searching for the red-shifted signature of neutral hydrogen from the cosmologically important epoch of re-ionization.  相似文献

The Black Swan Ultramafic Succession hosts a number of magmatic Fe–Ni–Cu–PGE sulfide ore shoots, ranging from high grade massive ore to low grade disseminated sulfides. Of these, the most economically significant is the Silver Swan massive sulfide orebody, associated with the basal contact of the succession. The deposit varies in thickness between 5 and 20 m, reaches a N–S strike length of 75 m, extends for at least 1.2 km of vertical plunge and is open at depth. Overlying matrix (net-textured) ore is rare. Inclusions of dacite are abundant within the lower 5 m of the massive sulfide. They range from angular fragments through smooth sinuous and plumose morphologies to fine lace-like intergrowths with the sulfide matrix, and comprise variable proportions of cores of porphyritic dacite and carapaces with skeletal plagioclase phenocrysts. Dynamic crystallisation and kinetic melting textures in the carapaces indicate that the inclusions have been heated to various temperatures, some well above their liquidus temperature. The composition of the inclusions ranges from a perfect match with the immediate footwall dacites to mixtures of dacite with up to 30% komatiite. The consistent thickness of the inclusion-bearing basal layer within the massive sulphide is interpreted as the extent of 3-D physical connectivity between the inclusions and a partially molten underlying hybrid layer. Primary contacts between the Silver Swan massive sulfide orebody and overlying ultramafic rocks are marked by thin rinds containing coarse-grained chevron-textured chromites with skeletal textures. Compositions of these chromites match those from Kambalda, Perseverance and other localities, and are inconsistent with a metamorphic origin. They are interpreted as markers of primary magmatic contacts. The combination of this feature with the general paucity of matrix ore implies that the massive ore accumulated and solidified before the accumulation of the overlying thick sequence of olivine cumulates. Taken together with observations on the internal fractionation of platinum group elements within the massive ores, these observations are consistent with a model where the massive ore were emplaced at the floor of a small partially drained lava tube. The floor of the tube had been previously heated by passage of large volumes of lava, such that it had reached its melting range. The felsic inclusions within the ore are the result of buoyant ascent of partially molten substrate into the ore magma. This constitutes strong evidence for the operation of thermo-mechanical erosion during ore emplacement. The disseminated Cygnet and Black Swan orebodies show a number of distinctive features. Cygnet contains a assemblage of clasts and inclusions which are interpreted as the result of rip-up, transport and redeposition of sulfides from a pre-existing massive sulfide orebody, of which Black Duck may be a remnant. The Black Swan orebody, by contrast, does not show xenolithic features, but is characterised by an association of sulfide blebs with segregation vesicles, and by unusually coarse-grained olivine. —?Detailed studies of the low to intermediate seismicity in two coastal regions of Norway have been used in a comparison between earthquake locations from local high-precision networks on the one side and locations using a sparse regional array network on the other side. To this end, a reference set of 32 low-magnitude earthquakes have been located using two local temporary networks in northern and western Norway, with estimated epicenter accuracies better than 5 and 10?km, respectively. Comparisons are made between the local network solutions and the NORSAR Generalized Beamforming (GBF) system, which provides automatic phase association and location estimates using the Fennoscandian regional array network. The median automatic GBF location error is of the order of 20–30?km when four or more arrays detect the event, increasing to about 80–100?km when only two arrays are available, and the automatic GBF bulletin is essentially complete down to magnitude ML = 2.0. Most of the mislocation vectors of the NORSAR GBF solutions are oriented perpendicular to the Norwegian coast, and with a tendency to pull the location in a southeasternly direction. The GBF performance is clearly better, both in terms of accuracy and completeness, than the performance of the automatic bulletin of the Prototype International Data Center (PIDC) which uses data from essentially the same network. The analyst reviewed NORSAR and PIDC bulletins show, not unexpectedly, an improvement in location accuracy compared to the automatic solutions and appear to be of similar quality for the few common events, with an average mislocation of about 20?km. The NORSAR reviewed bulletin is more complete at low magnitudes compared to PIDC, and there appears to be a potential for significant improvements in the PIDC processing of small seismic events in this region.  相似文献

— In recognition of growing needs for forecasts of air quality and atmospheric deposition to accompany classical weather forecasts, a new generation of atmospheric prediction models is slowly evolving. These share the common feature that atmospheric chemistry will be directly incorporated into advanced forecast schemes. It is argued that in most practical applications, the over-riding need is not for accurate prediction of some quantifiable air quality component, but rather a forecast of the probability of harmful consequences to exposure. In this event, it is not concentrations that need to be forecast, but the probability that concentrations will exceed some predetermined level at which consequences could be harmful. A method suitable for predicting bulk transfer coefficients appropriate to any reasonable height of measurement in the atmospheric surface boundary layer and incorporating the effects of atmospheric stability is based on the assumption that eddy and molecular diffusivities are additive near a water surface. This assumption is supported in the case of sensible heat, by results obtained over Lake Michigan and over an industrial cooling pond at Dresden, Illinois, as well as by published measurements made over Lake Flevo, Holland. The verification appears to extend to wind speeds in the range 10–15 m s–1. The results permit evaluation of transfer coefficients applicable in the demanding situations of inland lakes and artificial cooling ponds.Work performed under the auspices of the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration.  相似文献

Operation of a monostatic acoustic sounder on the campus of The University of Calgary for the period March to September, 1976, has provided data on the atmospheric boundary layer over Calgary. The formation and dissipation of the nocturnal temperature inversion layer leaves a clear signature in the sounder records. A trend is discerned in which the nocturnal layer tends to form at sunset, whereas convective instability is established some 2–3 hours after sunrise. Comparison of sounder records with an extensive set of radiosonde temperature profiles has shown that the height of the inversion layer can be determined reliably when a single, dark, ground-based return is visible on the sounder charts. On many occasions, however, the sounder detects multiple structures in the atmosphere. In these cases, it is difficult to establish a systematic correspondence of the turbulent structure as observed in the sounder records with the temperature profile as observed by the radiosonde.  相似文献
