Reflection of stratospheric planetary waves and its impact on tropospheric cold weather over Asia during January 2008 were investigated by applying two dimensional Eliassen-Palm (EP) flux and three-dimensional Plumb wave activity fluxes.The planetary wave propagation can clearly be seen in the longitude-height and latitude-height sections of the Plumb wave activity flux and EP flux,respectively,when the stratospheric basic state is partially reflective.Primarily,a wave packet emanating from Baffin Island/coast of Labrador propagated eastward,equatorward and was reflected over Central Eurasia and parts of China,which in turn triggered the advection of cold wind from the northern part of the boreal forest regions and Siberia to the subtropics.The wide region of Central Eurasia and China experienced extreme cold weather during the second ten days of January 2008,whereas the extraordinary persistence of the event might have occurred due to an anomalous blocking high in the Urals-Siberia region. 相似文献

I explore the effect of leadership on the trade-off between social and ecological outcomes of community driven efforts in governing forests globally. I do so by using logistic regression and QCA (qualitative comparative analysis) for the analysis of cross-sectional data from the International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research program. While the net effect of leadership on the trade-off in forestry outcomes is significant, there are multiple causal paths via which various factors influence the trade-off in forestry outcomes. Some of these paths take place in the presence of leadership, while the presence or the absence of leadership is irrelevant for the rest of the paths. This finding indicates that leaders often play an important role in the decisionmaking process during the governance of forests, especially when hard decisions need to be taken. 相似文献

Site response in and around Delhi is studied using digital seismograms recorded by a thirteen-station VSAT-based 24-bit digital
Delhi telemetry network of the India Meteorological Department. Nine local (M
l ≥ 2.3) and nine regional (M
l ≥ 3.9) earthquakes are selected for the estimation of site amplification factor using the classical standard spectral ratio
for regional events (Ridge Delhi Observatory being the reference station), normalized standard spectral ratio for local events,
horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio or receiver function and the generalized inversion techniques in the frequency range
of 0.5 to 7.5 Hz. Site response curves at all the thirteen stations exhibit station to station variation of the site amplification
factor reflecting the changes in geologic/geotectonic/soil conditions. A comparison of the site response values obtained by
the generalized inversion with those computed using receiver function technique shows a large scatter even though the pattern
of the curves remain more or less similar. However, the site effects computed by generalized inversion and standard spectral
ratio exhibit a good 1:1 correspondence. The peaks yielded by all the methods have been observed to occur at the same frequencies.
It is evident that the softer fluvial deposits of the newer alluvium of the east Yamuna sector show steeper site amplification
gradient at lower frequencies, while the greater Delhi experiences moderate site amplification. The variation of site response
corroborates the abrupt changes in intensity from one location to another due to local site condition. 相似文献

Stable carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses of the planktonic foraminifera (Globigerinoides ruber) from a deep sea sediment core (GC-1) in the Andaman Sea show high glacial-to-Holocene δ18O amplitude of 2.1%o which is consistent with previously published records from this marginal basin and suggest increased
salinity and/or decreased temperature in the glacial surface waters of this region. A pulse of18O enrichment during the last deglaciation can be attributed to a Younger Dryas cooling event and/or to a sudden decrease of
fresh water influx from the Irrawady and Salween rivers into the Andaman Sea. High δ13C values observed during the isotopic stages 2 and 4 are probably due to the enhanced productivity during glacial times in

The ability of atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs), that are forced with observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs),
to simulate the Indian monsoon rainfall (IMR) variability on interannual to decadal timescales is analyzed in a multimodel
intercomparison. The multimodel ensemble has been performed within the CLIVAR International “Climate of the 20th Century”
(C20C) Project. This paper is part of a C20C intercomparison of key climate time series. Whereas on the interannual timescale
there is modest skill in reproducing the observed IMR variability, on decadal timescale the skill is much larger. It is shown
that the decadal IMR variability is largely forced, most likely by tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs), but as well by
extratropical and especially Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) related SSTs. In particular there has been a decrease
from the late 1950s to the 1990s that corresponds to a general warming of tropical SSTs. Using a selection of control integrations
from the World Climate Research Programme’s (WCRP’s) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3), it is shown that
the increase of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the twentieth century has not significantly contributed to the observed decadal

Limestone defluoridation by fixed bed reactor has been studied with water pre‐acidified with edible organic acids, viz. acetic acid (AA) and citric acid (CA). The study has been carried out by varying acid concentration, contact time (t), number of repeated use of the same limestone bed (n), and chip size of the crushed limestone using fixed fluoride concentration of 10 mg/L in distilled water and groundwater amended to that concentration of fluoride. The presence of both the acids considerably improved the fluoride removal and the removal increased with increase in the acid concentration. Fluoride removal to less than 0.5 and 1.0 mg/L from initial 5 and 10 mg/L, respectively, have been achieved by the method on treatment with single reactor. The mechanism of fluoride removal in the process thought to be the increase in Ca2+ activity by dissolution of limestone, which precipitates as CaF2. XPS analysis reveals that adsorption also contribute to the fluoride removal along with precipitation. The final pH of water remained within acceptable range for drinking water. Initial concentration of fluoride, effects the removal ability of the limestone particles only to some extent. The influence of other anions on fluoride removal process has a little influence which follows the order phosphate > sulfate > bromide > chloride > nitrate. 相似文献

A novel finite element method has been described in this paper for the solution of the steady-state scalar wave equation in two dimensions. In this method the physical domain of the problem is mapped into an image domain; the governing equation and the prescribed boundary conditions are also appropriately transformed. Because logarithmic mapping functions are used, the physical domain is logarithmically condensed in the image plane. The method is therefore particularly suitable for the efficient and economical solution of large or very large aspect ratio problems. The high degree of accuracy which the method is capable of is demonstrated by means of two typical examples. The succession of lithofacies of a part of the Barren Measures Formation of the Talchir Gondwana basin has been studied by
statistical techniques. The lithologies have been grouped under five facies states viz coarse-, medium-, and fine-grained
sandstones, shale and coal for statistical analyses. Markov chain analysis indicates the arrangement of Barren Measures lithofacies
in the form of fining upward cycles. A complete cycle consists of conglomerate or coarse-grained sandstone at the base sequentially
succeeded by medium-and fine-grained sandstones, shales and coal at the top. The entropy analysis puts the Barren Measures
cycles into A-4 type cyclicity, which consists of different proportions of lower, upper and side truncated cycles of lithologic
states. Regression analysis indicates a sympathetic relationship between total thickness of strata (net subsidence) and number
of cycles and an antipathic relationship between average thickness and number of sedimentary cycles. The cyclic sedimentation
of the Barren Measures Formation was controlled by autocyclic process which occurred due to the lateral migration of streams
triggered by intrabasinal differential subsidence. In many instances, the clastic sediments from the laterally migrating rivers
interrupted the cyclic sedimentation resulting in thinner cycles in areas where the number of cycles are more. Principal component
and multivariate regression analyses suggest that the net subsidence of the basin is mostly controlled by the thickness of
sandstones, shale beds and coal stringers. 相似文献
