Beidellite, a low-cost, locally available and natural mineral was used as an adsorbent for the removal of lead and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions in batch experiments. The kinetics of adsorption process was tested for the pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order reaction and intra-particle diffusion models. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetic models were calculated. Comparison amongst the models showed that the sorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo second-order model. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to the experimental equilibrium data for different temperatures. The adsorption capacities (Q°) of beidellite for lead and cadmium ions were calculated from the Langmuir isotherm. It was found that adsorption capacity was in the range of 83.3–86.9 for lead and 42–45.6 mg/g for cadmium at different temperatures. Thermodynamic studies showed that the metal uptake reaction by beidellite was endothermic in nature. Binary metal adsorption studies were also conducted to investigate the interactions and competitive effects in binary adsorption process. Based on the optimum parameters found, beidellite can be used as adsorbent for metal removal processes.  相似文献

The first combined mineralogical and geochemical investigation of coal ashes from the Northwest Thrace Coal Basin, Turkey, was performed as a case study. The coal ash samples were obtained at 525 °C (group I), 750 °C (group II), and 1000 °C (group III) ashing temperatures from coal samples from the basin and were studied in terms of their mineralogical and geochemical composition using XRD and ICP-MS methods. The determination of the mineralogical composition was done for all of the groups; the geochemical analysis was carried out only for group II. In accordance with the high SiO2, Fe2O3, CaO, and SO3 content of the ash, quartz (SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), and anhydrite (CaSO4) are the major crystalline phases for all of the ash groups. The other minerals are muscovite, thenardite, tridymite, calcite, wollastonite, anorthite, cristobalite, gibbsite, ternesite, mullite, nahcolite, and nacrite. High-temperature phases such as mullite, wollastonite, and anorthite were observed at 750 and 1000 °C. According to the (Fe2O3 + CaO + MgO+ K2O+ Na2O)/(SiO2 + Al2O3+ TiO2) ratios varying from 0.19 to 5.65, the ashes are highly prone to slagging. Compared to average values of low-rank coal ashes, the contents of V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cs, W, and U of the ash are higher, whereas the total content of rare earth elements (REEs) (Σ 163.7 ppm) are lower. Based on upper continental crust normalization, As, Se, Th, and U are enriched in all of the samples. The higher trace element contents in the ashes might be considered as a possible health hazard. The correlation analyses indicated that Ca is associated with anhydrite and As with hematite. The correlation analyses also showed that newly formed Al and Ca silicates may contain the elements such as Ti, K, Na, Cr, Sn, and Pb.  相似文献

Summary The hydrothermal synthesis of kaolinite from various alumina and silica starting materials reacted at 200°C in aqueous solutions of oxalic acid and H2SO4 with the corresponding saturated water vapour pressure, in periods of time from 10 to 25 days, has been followed by X-ray diffraction measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive analysis of the products. The temperature and time periods of reactions were chosen on the basis of previously collected data on the effects of H4EDTA, a complex-forming agent, and of H2SO4, an inorganic acid, on the rate of formation of kaolinite. Aluminium-complexing acids increase the rate of formation or decrease the temperature of formation of kaolinite as shown by evidence from X-ray diffraction patterns. The influence of the starting materials as sources of aluminum, amorphous aluminum hydroxides, pseudoboehmite, allophane or gibbsite, has also been examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and by energy dispersive analysis. Scanning electron micrographs indicated that silica is a more mobile phase than alumina, based on the progressive formation of a thin coating on gibbsite during early reaction, then by growth of clusters of platy crystals of kaolin, and finally by production of pellets of stacked crystal flakes. Characteristics of seismic activity along the North Anatolian Fault Zone are analyzed between 1970 and 2010. Magnitude completeness changes between 2.7 and 2.9 in the North Anatolian Fault Zone. The frequency-magnitude distribution of earthquakes is well represented with a b-value typically close to 1. A clear decrease in temporal distribution of b-value is observed before the strong main shocks. Correlation dimension values are relatively large and the seismic activity is more clustered at larger scales in the North Anatolian Fault Zone.  相似文献

In this study, the spatial and temporal impacts of the Atatürk Dam on agro-meteorological aspects of the Southeastern Anatolia region have been investigated. Change detection and environmental impacts due to water-reserve changes in Atatürk Dam Lake have been determined and evaluated using multi-temporal Landsat satellite imageries and meteorological datasets within a period of 1984–2011. These time series have been evaluated for three time periods. Dam construction period constitutes the first part of the study. Land cover/use changes especially on agricultural fields under the Atatürk Dam Lake and its vicinity have been identified between the periods of 1984–1992. The second period comprises the 10-year period after the completion of filling up the reservoir in 1992. At this period, Landsat and meteorological time-series analyses are examined to assess the impact of the Atatürk Dam Lake on selected irrigated agricultural areas. For the last 9-year period from 2002 to 2011, the relationships between seasonal water-reserve changes and irrigated plains under changing climatic factors primarily driving vegetation activity (monthly, seasonal, and annual fluctuations of rainfall rate, air temperature, humidity) on the watershed have been investigated using a 30-year meteorological time series. The results showed that approximately 368 km2 of agricultural fields have been affected because of inundation due to the Atatürk Dam Lake. However, irrigated agricultural fields have been increased by 56.3% of the total area (1552 of 2756 km2) on Harran Plain within the period of 1984–2011.  相似文献

Sand and dust storms are causing hazards and problems in aviation as well as the dangers and distresses they cause on living things. The low meteorological visibility, the presence of strong winds with gust, and the transport of dust and sand particles by the wind are dangerous on landing and departure of aircrafts, and even on planes that are parked. The main aim of the study is to examine the meteorological conditions causing the dust storm that took place in the Arabian Peninsula on February 28, 2009, and to determine the source of dust caused dust storm, sand storm, blown sand, and blown dust at the airports. Within the scope of the study, aviation routine weather report (METAR) and aviation selected special weather report (SPECI) reports have been assessed at many airports over Arabian Peninsula (AP), the northern part of the AP and North Africa. As model outputs; NCEP–DOE Reanalysis 2 data, BSC–DREAM8B, and HYSPLIT model were used. In the satellite images; METEOSAT MSG dust RGB images, MODIS, and Kalpana-1 data were used. According to obtained results, dust storms were detected in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (UAE). At Al-Ahsa Airport in Saudi Arabia, the lowest visibility measured on February 28, 2009, dropping to 200 m, which was dominated by blowing sand. The source region of the dust observed at Dubai Airport in UAE is the eastern regions of the Rub’al Khali Desert located between Saudi Arabia, Oman, and UAE.  相似文献

The Taurus Mountain is one of the most important karstic region of the world and dolines are characteristics landforms of this area. However, the number and distribution of doline are unknown in the study area. The aims of this study are to explain the total number of dolines, distribution of doline density, effects of slope conditions and the change of doline orientation in the Taurus Mountains. According to the 1/25000 scale topographic maps utilized in this study, a total of 140,070 dolines were determined in a 13,189 km2 area on eleven high karstic plateaus bordered by steep slopes and deep gorges. These plateaus are substantially affected by highly-faulted and jointed systems and about 80% of each plateau is covered with neritic limestone. The dolines are located at an elevation between 10 and 2870 m. Average elevation of all dolines is 1842 m. 90% of dolines are located between 1300 and 2270 m and only 5% of dolines found under 1330 m. According to this results, the densest doline zone corresponds to the alpine and periglacial zone above the treeline. Doline density reaches?>?100 doline/km2 on Mt. Anamas and the Seyran, Geyik and Akda? ranges as well as the Ta?eli plateau. Maximum density (187 doline/km2) is found on the Akda? Mountains. However, 66% of the study area is characterized by low density, 29.9% with moderate density, 3.4% with high density and 0.7% with very high density. The highest doline densities are seen on gentle slopes (15°–25°/km2) and steep slopes (>?35°/km2) are limited doline distribution. According to the rose diagram formed by the azimuths of the long axis of the dolines at the Central Taurus, two direction are dominant in doline orientations (NW–SE and NE–SW). However, dominant directions are NE-SW at eastern, NE–SW and NW–SE at central and NW-SE at western part of the Central Taurus. According to this elongations, doline orientations are formed an arc which is formed by tectonic evolution of the Central Taurus.  相似文献

Large areas of acid sulfate (AS) soils are located along the coastal plains of Finland, and previous studies have shown that after reclamation they release extreme quantities of metals to watercourses in mid-western and northern Finland. In this study on streams of south-western Finland, where little information about AS soils is available, these soils were found to exhibit the same pattern of elevated metal- and sulfate concentrations as in the notorious AS soil landscapes of mid-western Finland. Meteorologically/hydrologically driven temporal variations of these elements were great in the most affected streams. There were also significant positive implications regarding future environmental work; AS soils in the highlighted region were found to cause sudden temporal influxes of acidic water only in the most affected streams, indicating that the overburden and soils of the area discharge well buffered water. Moreover, it was indicated that the high (less toxic) metal concentrations are largely caused by erosion of suspended phyllosilicates (<0.45 μm) from farmland rather than by AS soils.  相似文献

Some earthquakes in the Eastern Mediterranean are tsunamigenic and some of their tsunamis affected the coastal area of the Gulf of Fethiye, SW Turkey. Recent trenching surveys on the low-lying coastal areas of Dalaman delta beach across the Rhodes Pass revealed three probable tsunami impacts as a result of the historical earthquakes of 1303, 1481 and 1741. Yet, there have been relatively few studies of the processes associated with tsunami sediment transport, their deposition and nature in geological record. In addition to the interpretation of sedimentary features, accurate paleoenvironmental assessments might be possible by distinctive biogeochemical researches on marine-sourced organic matters, geochemical properties, quantitative amounts of marine-sourced biomarkers and deterministic ratios. The identification of major lipid biomarkers (fatty acids and sterols) in the samples recovered from the sidewalls of the studied trench, for example, indicated biogenic contributions due to the presence of phytoplankton, zooplankton, dinoflagellates and bacteria. Quantitative estimation of biomarkers and deterministic ratios also indicated some evidences for marine-sourced organic matters, implying that biomarkers can be used to answer the open questions in tsunami and paleotsunami researches.  相似文献
