Biogeochemistry of metals in aquatic sediments is strongly influenced by bioturbation. To determine the effects of biological transport on cadmium distribution in freshwater sediments, a bioturbation model is explored that describes the conveyor-belt feeding of tubificid oligochaetes. A stepwise modelling strategy was adopted to constrain the many parameters of the model: (i) the tubificid transport model was first calibrated on four sets of microspheres (inert solid tracer) profiles to constrain tubificid transport; (ii) the resulting transport coefficients were subsequently applied to simulate the distribution of both particulate and dissolved cadmium. Firstly, these simulations provide quantitative insight into the mechanism of tubificid bioturbation. Values of transport coefficients compare very well with the literature, and based on this, a generic model of tubificid bioturbation is proposed. Secondly, the application of the model to cadmium dataset sheds a light on the behaviour of cadmium under tubificid bioturbation. Cadmium enters the sediment in two ways. In one pathway, cadmium enters the sediment in the dissolved phase, is rapidly absorbed onto solid particles, which are then rapidly transported to depth by the tubificids. In the other pathway, cadmium is adsorbed to particles in suspension in the overlying water, which then settle on the sediment surface, and are transported downwards by bioturbation. In a final step, we assessed the optimal model complexity for the present dataset. To this end, the two-phase conveyor-belt model was compared to two simplified versions. A solid phase-only conveyor-belt model also provides good results: the dissolved phase should not be explicitly incorporated because cadmium adsorption is fast and bioirrigation is weak. Yet, a solid phase-only biodiffusive model does not perform adequately, as it does not mechanistically capture the conveyor-belt transport at short time-scales.  相似文献

As they are the largest virialized structures formed in the universe, galaxy clusters are good probes of evolution of dark matter haloes since their formation from the fluctuation of the CMB. While the local cluster abundance allows us to constrain the shape and amplitude of the mass distribution regarding to the matter density, their redshift distribution is much more sensitive to the matter density of the universe and allows us to break the degeneracy. Here I compare the modelized distribution of clusters with existing catalogs such as EMSS to derive constraints on ΩM, σ8 and γ.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to use Monte Carlo simulations to provide atomic-level insights into the dissolution behavior of borosilicate and aluminoborosilicate glasses in dilute aqueous solutions. In the first part of this work, the effects of different structural features, such as the presence of non-bridging oxygens (NBO) or the formation of boroxol rings, on glass dissolution were evaluated separately and led to the following conclusions. (1) The dependence of the dissolution rate on the amount of NBO was found to be linear at all Si/B ratios and the accelerating effect of NBO was shown to increase with increasing Si/B ratio. (2) The formation of boroxol rings and of clusters of boroxol rings resulted in an increase of the dissolution rate at all Si/B ratios and, again, the extent of the rate increase was strongly dependent on the Si/B ratio. (3) For aluminosilicate glasses, the implementation of the aluminum avoidance rule was found to increase the rate of dissolution relative to that obtained for a random distribution.In the second part of this work, the dissolution of the NeB glasses studied by Pierce et al. (2010) was modeled in dilute aqueous solutions. Pierce et al. concluded from their study that either the rupture of the Al-O bonds or that of the Si-O bonds was the rate-limiting step controlling the dissolution of the NeB glasses. The simulations refined this conclusion and showed that, at low B/Al ratios, the rupture of both Al-O-Si and Si-O-Si linkages contributed to the dissolution rate whereas, at high B/Al ratios, the dissolution rate was independent of the rupture of Al-O-Si linkages and was controlled by S1 sites (silicon sites at the glass-water interface with one connection to nearest-neighbor sites) and dissolution via detachment of clusters.  相似文献

Uncertainty about the timing and location of the initiation of convergence in the western and south‐western Pacific greatly hinders accurate plate tectonic reconstructions of subduction systems in that area. The chemistry and age of dikes intruding mantle peridotite in the ophiolite of New Caledonia infer that subduction‐related magmatism began before 53 Ma. These new results infer that obduction in the south‐west Pacific is unrelated to the reorientation of the Pacific plate motion that occurred c. 43 Ma and confirm new interpretations showing that changes in mantle flow, hotspot and plate motion may have occurred as soon as late Paleocene or early Eocene.  相似文献

The Proterozoic Oonah Formation comprises a thick sequence of turbidites and mafic rocks that is widely exposed in western and northern Tasmania. The regional significance of the Oonah Formation is poorly understood as its contacts are faulted and estimates of its depositional age range from 1450 Ma to 700 Ma. Here we refine the depositional age of the Oonah Formation and clarify its relationship to other Proterozoic sequences in Tasmania. Magmatic apatite from the syn-sedimentary Cooee Dolerite has a 207Pb-corrected 238U/206Pb age of 733 ± 9 Ma that provides a robust estimate of the depositional age of the Oonah Formation. The Oonah Formation contains abundant 750 Ma detrital monazite and has detrital zircon age populations at 1800–1700 Ma, 1590 Ma, and 1450 Ma. The new age and provenance data support the interpretation that the Oonah Formation is a lateral equivalent of the base of the Togari Group and correlatives in Tasmania. We demonstrate that the stratigraphy and provenance of Neoproterozoic strata in Tasmania differ from time-equivalent sequences in Adelaide Rift Complex but are similar to the Pahrump Group (Death Valley, California) and the Cobham Formation (Transantarctic Mountains), which supports a southwest Laurentia—Tasmania—East Antarctica connection within supercontinent Rodinia.  相似文献

Understanding the age and construction quality of embankments used for road and rail infrastructure is critical in the effective management and maintenance of our transport networks, worth £billions to the UK economy. This paper presents for the first time results from full-scale, carefully controlled experiments on a unique model embankment conducted over the 4-year period between 2008 and 2011. It combines point location and spatially distributed measurements of pore water pressures and water content with outputs from hydrological modelling to draw conclusions of significance to both ongoing research in this field and to the asset management practices of infrastructure owners. For researchers, the paper highlights the crucial importance of transient permeability and soil water retention behaviour of fill materials in controlling the magnitude and distribution of pore water pressure in response to climate and weather events. For practitioners, the work demonstrates that there are significant differences in pore water pressure behaviour across the embankment, which is influenced by construction-related issues such as compaction level, aspect and presence of a granular capping material. Permeability was also observed to vary across the embankment both spatially and with depth, being dependent on degree of saturation and macroscale effects, particularly within a ‘near surface zone’. It is proposed that this ‘near surface zone’ has a critical effect on embankment stability and should be the focus of both ongoing scientific research and inspection and monitoring as encompassed by asset management regimes.  相似文献

In the last 10 years, Multiple-Point Statistics (MPS) modeling has emerged in Geostatistics as a valuable alternative to traditional variogram-based and object-based modeling. In contrast to variogram-based simulation, which is limited to two-point correlation reproduction, MPS simulation extracts and reproduces multiple-point statistics moments from training images; this allows modeling geologically realistic features, such as channels that control reservoir connectivity and flow behavior. In addition, MPS simulation works on individual pixels or small groups of pixels (patterns), thus does not suffer from the same data conditioning limitations as object-based simulation. The Single Normal Equation Simulation program SNESIM was the first implementation of MPS simulation to propose, through the introduction of search trees, an efficient solution to the extraction and storage of multiple-point statistics moments from training images. SNESIM is able to simulate three-dimensional models; however, memory and speed issues can occur when applying it to multimillion cell grids. Several other implementations of MPS simulation were proposed after SNESIM, but most of them manage to reduce memory demand or simulation time only at the expense of data conditioning exactitude and/or training pattern reproduction quality. In this paper, the original SNESIM program is revisited, and solutions are presented to eliminate both memory demand and simulation time limitations. First, we demonstrate that the time needed to simulate a grid node is a direct function of the number of uninformed locations in the conditioning data search neighborhood. Thus, two improvements are proposed to maximize the ratio of informed to uniformed locations in search neighborhoods: a new multiple-grid approach introducing additional intermediary subgrids; and a new search neighborhood designing process to preferentially include previously simulated node locations. Finally, because SNESIM memory demand and simulation time increase with the size of the data template used to extract multiple-point statistics moments from the training image and build the search tree, a simple method is described to minimize data template sizes while preserving training pattern reproduction quality.  相似文献

Coronation Hill is a U?+?Au?+?platinum group elements deposit in the South Alligator Valley (SAV) field in northern Australia, south of the better known unconformity-style U East Alligator Rivers (EAR) field. The SAV field differs from the EAR by having a more complex basin-basement architecture. A volcanically active fault trough (Jawoyn Sub-basin) developed on older basement and then was disrupted by renewed faulting, before being buried beneath regional McArthur Basin sandstones that are also the main hanging wall to the EAR deposits. Primary mineralisation at Coronation Hill formed at 1607?±?26 Ma (rather than 600–900 Ma as previously thought), and so it is likely that the SAV was part of a single west McArthur Basin dilational event. Most ore is hosted in sub-vertical faults and breccias in the competent volcanic cover sequence. This favoured fluid mixing, acid buffering (forming illite) and oxidation of Fe2+ and reduced C-rich assemblages as important uranium depositional mechanisms. However, reduction of U in fractured older pyrite (Pb model age of 1833?±?67 Ma) is an important trap in diorite. Some primary ore was remobilised at 675?±?21 Ma to form coarse uraninite?+?Ni-Co pyrite networks containing radiogenic Pb. Coronation Hill is polymetallic, and in this respect resembles the ‘egress’-style U deposits in the Athabascan Basin (Canada). However, these are all cover-hosted. A hypothesis for further testing is that Coronation Hill is also egress-style, with ores formed by fluids rising through basement-hosted fault networks (U reduction by diorite pyrite and carbonaceous shale), and into veins and breccias in the overlying Jawoyn Sub-basin volcano-sedimentary succession.  相似文献

Studies on air pollution and climate change have shown that forest fires constitute one of the major sources of atmospheric trace gases and particulate matter, especially during the dry season. However, these emissions remain difficult to quantify due to uncertainty on the extent of burned areas and deficient knowledge on the forest fire behaviours in each country. This study aims to estimate emissions from forest fires in Thailand by using the combination of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for active fire products and country-specific data based on prescribed burning experiments. The results indicate that 27817 fire hotspots (FHS) associated with forest fires were detected by the MODIS during 2005–2009. These FHS mainly occurred in the northern, western, and upper north-eastern parts of Thailand. Each year, the most significant fires were observed during January–May, with a peak in March. The majority of forest FHS were detected in the afternoon. According to the prescribed burning experiments, the average area of forest burned per fire event was found to fall within the range 1.09 to 12.47 ha, depending upon the terrain slope and weather conditions. The total burned area was computed at 159309 ha corresponding to the surface biomass fuel of 541515 tons dry matter. The forest fire emissions were computed at 855593 tons of CO2, 56318 tons of CO, 3682 tons of CH4, 108 tons of N2O, 4928 tons of PM2.5, 4603 tons of PM10, 357 tons of BC and 2816 tons of OC.  相似文献
