The combined use of field investigation and laboratory analyses allowed the detailed stratigraphic reconstruction of the Pollena eruption (472 AD) of Somma-Vesuvius. Three main eruptive phases were recognized, related either to changes in the eruptive processes and/or to relative changes of melt composition. The eruption shows a pulsating behavior with deposition of pyroclastic fall beds and generation of dilute and dense pyroclastic density currents (PDC). The eruptive mechanisms and transportation dynamics were reconstructed for the whole eruption. Column heights were between 12 and 20 km, corresponding to mass discharge rates (MDR) of 7×106 kg/s and 3.4×107 kg/s. Eruptive dynamics were driven by magmatic fragmentation of a phono-tephritic to tephri-phonolitic magma during Phases I and II, whereas phreatomagmatic fragmentation dominated Phase III. Magma composition varies between phonolitic and tephritic-phonolitic, with melt viscosity likely not in excess of 103 Pa s. The volume of the pyroclastic fall deposits, calculated by using of proximal isopachs, is 0.44 km3. This increases to 1.38 km3 if ash volumes are extrapolated on a log thickness vs. square root area diagram using one distal isopach and column height.Editorial responsibility: R Cioni 相似文献
Summary An attempt is made to show possible ways of predicting radio wave absorption in the midlatitude lower ionosphere using relations between absorption and the intensity of solar ionizing radiation and/or common solar activity indices, and between absorption and f0F2.

The paper presents geological and petrological data on one of the alkaline ranges developed along the borders of the Afar depression (Ethiopia). These alkaline ranges occur in a position transversal to the dominant NNW trend of the spreading zones of northern and central Afar which are characterized by magmas of tholeiitic affinity. The Edd-Bahar Assoli volcanic range consists of broad fields of basic lavas and numerous spatter cones outcropping in the area extending between 13°25′ and 13°75′ lat. N and 41°38′ and 42°15′ long. E. The mineralogical assemblage and the chemical data point to an alkaline nature for this range consisting mainly of alkali olivine basalts and basalts tending to hawaiites, the most evolved terms being largely subordinate. Petrologic differences between the Assab, Edd-Bahar Assoli and Erta Ale ranges are shown. The Edd-Bahar Assoli alkaline volcanism would be related to tectonic patterns trending both from NNW-SSE to N-S and from NE-SW to E-W. The supposed similarity with the transverse structure of the equatorial Atlantic ocean would thus not completely be ascertained in this zone. In Afar, the coexistence of an axial volcanism of tholeiitic affinity with an alkaline volcanism at the margin can better be explained by models based upon the upper mantle temperature distribution in a zone under oceanization. 相似文献

The relationships between cities and underlying groundwater are reviewed, with the aim to highlight the importance of urban groundwater resources in terms of city resilience value. Examples of more than 70 cities worldwide are cited along with details of their groundwater-related issues, specific experiences, and settings. The groundwater-related issues are summarized, and a first groundwater-city classification is proposed in order to facilitate a more effective city-to-city comparison with respect to, for example, the best practices and solutions that have been put in practice by similar cities in terms of local groundwater resources management. The interdependences between some groundwater services and the cascading effects on city life in cases of shock (e.g., drought, heavy rain, pollution, energy demand) and chronic stress (e.g., climate change) are analyzed, and the ideal groundwater-resilient-city characteristics are proposed. The paper concludes that groundwater is a crucial resource for planning sustainability in every city and for implementing city resilience strategies from the climate change perspective.
Summary The nighttime LF radio wave absorption in the lower ionosphere measured at two frequencies in central Europe over 1963–1985
is used to infer planetary wave activity and its long-term trend in the upper middle atmosphere (∼90–100 km). The observed
positive trend is roughly consistent with results based on daytime absorption. Nighttime results are less pronounced and less
statistically significant probably due to perturbing effects of geomagnetic activity. The observed trends, which are probably
of anthropogenic origin, are together with the daytime results [3,4] the first evidence of long-term trends in planetary wave
activity in the upper middle atmosphere. 相似文献
