Trace element geochemistry of coesite-bearing eclogites from the Roberts Victor kimberlite, Kaapvaal craton 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Trace element characteristics of seven coesite-bearing eclogitic xenoliths from the Roberts Victor kimberlite demonstrate that this suite of eclogites originated as gabbroic cumulates in oceanic crust that was subsequently subducted. All but one of the garnets show positive Eu anomalies, accompanied by a flat heavy rare earth pattern, which is atypical of garnet, but characteristic of plagioclase, arguing for a considerable amount of plagioclase in the protoliths. Forward modelling of the accumulation of liquidus minerals from primitive komatiitic, picritic, and basaltic liquids suggests that at least some of the eclogite protoliths were not derived from basaltic parental liquids, whereas derivation from either komatiitic or picritic liquids is possible. The reconstructed eclogite bulk rocks compare favourably with oceanic gabbros from ODP hole 735B (SW Indian Ridge), even to the extent that oxygen isotopic systematics show signs of low-temperature seawater alteration. However, the oxygen isotope trends are the reverse of what is expected for cumulates in the lower section of the oceanic crust. These new findings show that δ18O values in eclogitic xenoliths, despite being sound indicators for their interaction with hydrothermal fluids at low pressure, do not necessarily bear a simple relationship with the inferred oceanic crustal stratigraphy of the protoliths. 相似文献

Mantle xenoliths and xenocrysts from Guaniamo, Venezuela kimberlites record equilibration conditions corresponding to a limited range of sampling in the lithosphere (100-150 km). Within this small range, however, compositions vary considerably, but regularly, defining a strongly layered mantle sequence. Major and trace element compositions suggest the following lithologic sequence: highly depleted lherzolite from 100 to 115 km, mixed ultra-depleted harzburgite and lherzolite from 115 to 120 km, relatively fertile lherzolite from 120 to 135 km, and mixed depleted harzburgite and relatively fertile lherzolite from 135 to 150 km. Based on comparison with well-documented mantle peridotites and xenocrysts from elsewhere, we conclude that the Meso-proterozoic Cuchivero Province (host to the Guaniamo kimberlites) is underlain by depleted and ultra-depleted shallow Archean mantle that was underplated, and uplifted, by Proterozoic subduction, perhaps more than once. These Proterozoic subduction events introduced less-depleted oceanic lithosphere beneath the Archean section, which remains there and is the source of the abundant Guaniamo eclogite-suite diamonds that have ocean-floor geochemical signatures. Although diamond-indicative low-Ca Cr-pyrope garnets are abundant, they are derived primarily from the shallow depleted layer within the field of graphite stability, and the rare peridotite-suite diamonds are either metastably preserved at these shallow depths, or were derived from the small amount of depleted lithosphere sampled by these kimberlites that remains within the diamond stability field (the mixture of Archean and Proterozoic mantle in the depth range 135-150 km). 相似文献

Thirty-four silicate and oxide inclusions large enough for in situ WDS electron microprobe analysis were exposed by grinding/polishing of 19 diamonds from the Kelsey Lake Mine in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line Kimberlite district. Eighteen olivines, seven Cr-pyropes, four Mg-chromites, and one orthopyroxene in 15 stones belong to the peridotite (P) suite and three garnets and one omphacite in three stones belong to the eclogite (E) suite. The fact that this suite is dominated by the peridotite population is in stark contrast to the other diamond suites studied in the State Line district (Sloan, George Creek), which are overwhelmingly eclogitic. Kelsey Lake olivine inclusions are magnesian (17 of 18 grains in 9 stones are in the range Fo 92.7-93.1), typical of harzburgitic P-suite stones worldwide, but unlike the more Fe-rich (lherzolitic) Sloan olivine suite. Mg-chromites (wt% MgO = 12.8-13.8; wt% Cr2O3 = 61.4-66.6) are in the lower MgO range of diamond inclusion chromites worldwide. Seven harzburgitic Cr-pyropes in five stones have moderately low calcium contents (wt% CaO = 3.3-4.3) but are very Cr-rich (wt% Cr2O3 = 9.7-16.7). A few stones have been analyzed by SIMS for carbon isotope composition and nitrogen abundance. One peridotitic stone is apparently homogeneous in carbon isotope composition (δ13CPDB = −6.2‰) but with variable nitrogen abundance (1296-2550 ppm). Carbon isotopes in eclogitic stones range from “normal” for the upper mantle (δ13CPDB = −5.5‰) to somewhat low (δ13CPDB = −10.2‰), with little internal variation in individual stones (maximum difference is 3.6‰). Nitrogen contents (2-779 ppm) are lower than in the peridotitic stone, and are lower in cores than in rims. As, worldwide, harzburgite-suite diamonds have been shown to have formed in Archean time, we suggest that the Kelsey Lake diamond population was derived from a block of Archean lithosphere that, at the time of kimberlite eruption, existed beneath the Proterozoic Yavapai province. The mixed diamond inclusion populations from the State Line kimberlites appear to support models in which volumes of Wyoming Craton Archean mantle survive buried beneath Proterozoic continental crust. Such material may be mixed with eclogitic/lherzolitic regimes emplaced beneath or intermingled with the Archean rocks by Proterozoic subduction. 相似文献

In situ analysis reveals that eclogite-facies garnets are zoned in δ18O with lower values in the core and rims that are ~1.5 to 2.5 ‰ higher. This pattern is present in 9 out of 12 garnets analyzed by SIMS from four orogenic eclogite terranes, and correlates with an increase in the mole fraction of pyrope and Mg/Fe ratio from core to rim, indicating prograde garnet growth. At the maximum temperatures and the time-scales experienced by these garnets, calculated intragranular diffusion distances for oxygen are small (<5 μm), indicating that δ18O records primary growth zoning and not diffusive exchange. The oxygen isotope gradients are larger than could form due to temperature changes during closed-system mineral growth. Thus, gradients reflect the compositions of fluids infiltrating during prograde metamorphism. Values of δ18O in garnet cores range from ?1 to 15 ‰, likely preserving the composition of the eclogite protoliths. Two garnet cores from the Almenningen eclogite in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway, have δ18O ~?1 ‰ and are the first negative δ18O eclogites identified in the region. In contrast with orogenic eclogites, seven high δ18O garnets (>5 ‰) from two kimberlites are homogeneous in δ18O, possibly due to diffusive exchange, which is possible for prolonged periods at higher mantle temperatures. Homogeneity of δ18O in garnets outside the normal mantle range (5–6 ‰) may be common in kimberlitic samples. 相似文献

Two xenoliths of garnet harzburgite from the Finsch kimberlite, South Africa, have been found to contain diamond. One of the xenoliths has mineral compositions typical of low-T coarse textured garned peridotites, whereas minerals in the other are similar but not identical to most peridotite-suite minerals included in diamonds, especially in the low-CaO content of garnet. Geothermobarometric calculations show both xenoliths equilibrated at temperatures above 1,100°C and pressures>55 kbar, which is near the low-pressure end of the range of equilibration conditions for diamond-free garnet lherzolites and garnet harzburgites from Finsch. The chemistries of the minerals in the two rocks are distinctly different to most of the mineral inclusions in Finsch diamonds. This, as well as the different 13C compositions between xenolith diamonds (-2.8 to-4.6) and diamonds in the kimberlite (generally<-4.3) suggest different origins or sources for the diamonds.

Summary The more or less lamprophyric dikes formed in the late stage of variscan orogeny in the immediate neighborhood of an Oberharz lead-zinc vein are petrographically, petrochemically und geochemically characterized. The petrochemical and geochemical relationship between dikes and initial spilitic diabases of middle Devonian and Culm age as well as between dikes and late orogenic rocks of Harzburg Gabbro Massif are discussed also the relation of dike to vein. The lamprophyres have developed from a volatile rich basaltic melt (postmagmatic deuteric effects) which is contaiminated in varying degree by assimilation of clastic sedimentary rock (spilitic albite diabase—spilitic kersantite).

A wide-angle seismic profile across the western peninsulas of SW Ireland was performed. This region corresponds to the northernmost Variscan thrust and fold deformation. The dense set of 13 shots and 109 stations along the 120 km long profile provides a detailed velocity model of the crust.
The seismic velocity model, obtained by forward and inverse modelling, defines a five-layer crust. A sedimentary layer, 5–8 km thick, is underlain by an upper-crustal layer of variable thickness, with a base generally at a depth of 10–12 km. Two mid-crustal layers are defined, and a lower-crustal layer below 22 km. The Moho lies at a depth of 30–32 km. A low-velocity zone, which coincides with a well-defined gravity low, is observed in the central part of the region and is modelled as a Caledonian granite which intruded upper-crustal basement. The granite may have acted as a buffer to northward-directed Variscan thrusting. The Dingle–Dungarvan Line (DDL) marks a major change in sedimentary and crustal velocity and structure. It lies immediately to the north of the velocity and gravity low, and shows thickness and velocity differences in many of the underlying crustal layers and even in the Moho. This suggests a deep, pre-Variscan control of the structural development of this area. The model is compatible with thin-skinned tectonics, which terminated at the DDL and which incorporated thrusts involving the sedimentary and upper-crustal layers. 相似文献
