A continuum representation for soil which incorporates the concepts of hypoelasticity and critical state theory is proposed. General, three-dimensional constitutive equations are formulated to relate specific volume, stress, rate of deformation and rate of change of stress, resulting in a mathematical material model which exhibits phenomenological features typical of soil response. The general constitutive equations are specialized to represent the particular cases of isotropic compression, constant, volume deformation, uniaxial compression and biaxial deformation. Methods are suggested for determining the model parameters to represent a specific soil using conventional triaxial test data. Comparisons of stress-strain response with published experimental data are shown.  相似文献

Radar backscatter measurements made as part of Project MARSEN in 1979 from the Noordwijk tower off the Dutch coast are used to calculate apparent ripple (capillary and short-gravity wave) spectra by inverting the small-perturbation scattering theory. The measurements were made at 10 and 15 GHz for angles of incidence ranging from20degto70deg; this means that the range of Bragg-resonant spatial wavenumbers covered is from 1.43 to 5.90 cm-1. Results of coincidentC- andX-band experiments by the Institute Francais du Petrole (IFP) andX-band experiments by a group of Dutch researchers (TNO) are compared with our results and good general agreement is found. Our initial results show a steeper falloff of the spectra with increasing wavenumber than reported previously, particularly at low windspeeds. When the spectra are modified to account for the difference between previous aircraft and tower measurements [1], the observed spectra agree well with the appropriate part of Pierson's wave spectrum as modified by Fung and Lee [2].  相似文献

The distribution of ammonium citrate-leachable lead, zinc and cadmium among size fractions in stream sediments is strongly influenced by the presence of hydrous Mn-Fe oxides in the form of coatings on sediment grains. Distribution curves showing leachable metals as a function of particle size are given for eight samples from streams in New York State. These show certain features in common; in particular two concentrations of metals, one in the finest fractions, and a second peak in the coarse sand and gravel fraction. The latter can be explained as a result of the increasing prevalence and thickness of oxide coatings with increasing particle size, with the oxides serving as collectors for the heavy metals. The distribution of Zn and Cd in most of the samples closely parallels that of Mn; the distribution of Pb is less regular and appears to be related to Fe in some samples and Mn in others. The concentration of metals in the coarse fractions due to oxide coatings, combined with the common occurrence of oxide deposition in streams of glaciated regions, raises the possibility of using coarse materials for geochemical surveys and environmental heavy-metal studies.  相似文献

We propose a chronology of late Wisconsinan glacial fluctuations in middle North America, from Alberta to Wisconsin, based on radiocarbon dates derived solely from wood. Previous chronologies of the southwestern margin of the North American Continental Ice Sheet have depended to a considerable degree on radiocarbon dates from fine-grained organic sediment. This material is commonly contaminated with older carbon, resulting in chronologic confusion. By using only dates from wood, much of the confusion disappears. However, because of the scarcity of wood dates, only four of the sixteen identified fluctuations are accurately dated: an advance into Iowa about 14,000 to 13,500 BP, an advance into South Dakota and Iowa about 12,300 BP, an advance into the Lake Michigan basin about 11,700 BP, and an advance into the Lake Superior basin about 9900 BP. In addition, the beginning of late Wisconsinan glaciation, before 20,000 BP, is fairly well documented. None of the fluctuations in the western part of the region are accurately dated.  相似文献
