This study discusses the scaling properties of the spatial distribution of the December 26, 2004, Sumatra aftershocks. We estimate the spatial correlation dimension D 2 of the epicentral distribution of aftershocks recorded by a local network operated by Geological Survey of India. We estimate the value of D 2 for five blocks in the source area by using generalized correlation integral approach. We assess its bias due to finite data points, scaling range, effects of location errors, and boundary effects theoretically and apply it to real data sets. The correlation dimension was computed both for real as well as synthetic data sets that include randomly generated point sets obtained using uniform distributions and mimicking the number of events and outlines of the effective areas filled with epicenters. On comparing the results from the real data and random point sets from simulations, we found the lower limit of bias in D 2 estimates from limited data sets to be 0.26. Thus, the spatial variation in correlation dimensions among different blocks using local data sets cannot be directly compared unless the influence of bias in the real aftershock data set is taken into account. They cannot also be used to infer the geometry of the faults. We also discuss the results in order to add constraints on the use of synthetic data and of different approaches for uncertainty analysis on spatial variation of D 2. A difference in D 2 values, rather than their absolute values, among small blocks is of interest to local data sets, which are correlated with their seismic b values. Taking into account the possible errors and biases, the average D 2 values vary from 1.05 to 1.57 in the Andaman–Nicobar region. The relative change in D 2 values can be interpreted in terms of clustering and diffuse seismic activity associated with the low and high D 2 values, respectively. Overall, a relatively high D 2 and low b value is consistent with high-magnitude, diffuse activity in space in the source region of the 2004 Sumatra earthquake. 相似文献

This paper investigates the writing of situated knowledge and explores the possibilities of enacting difference by writing differently. We present a selection of research stories in which carrier bags, sounds, baskets, gardens and potatoes are interpreted less as objects of research or metaphors to aid in analysing phenomena, than as mediators of the stories. Our stories emphasise the ontological politics of engaging with and representing the relational, the messy, the spontaneous, the unpredictable, the non‐human and bodily experiences. Managers are moving from a model of managing individual sectors, human activities, or ecosystem services to an ecosystem-based management (EBM) approach which attempts to balance the range of services provided by ecosystems. Applying EBM is often difficult due to inherent tradeoffs in managing for different services. This challenge particularly holds for estuarine systems, which have been heavily altered in most regions and are often subject to intense management interventions. Estuarine managers can often choose among a range of management tactics to enhance a particular service; although some management actions will result in strong tradeoffs, others may enhance multiple services simultaneously. Management of estuarine ecosystems could be improved by distinguishing between optimal management actions for enhancing multiple services and those that have severe tradeoffs. This requires a framework that evaluates tradeoff scenarios and identifies management actions likely to benefit multiple services. We created a management action-services matrix as a first step towards assessing tradeoffs and providing managers with a decision support tool. We found that management actions that restored or enhanced natural vegetation (e.g., salt marsh and mangroves) and some shellfish (particularly oysters and oyster reef habitat) benefited multiple services. In contrast, management actions such as desalination, salt pond creation, sand mining, and large container shipping had large net negative effects on several of the other services considered in the matrix. Our framework provides resource managers a simple way to inform EBM decisions and can also be used as a first step in more sophisticated approaches that model service delivery. 相似文献

Benthic dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux rates and changes in DOC isotope ratios, along with nutrient fluxes, phospholipid fatty acids concentration and carbon isotope ratios were measured in productive estuarine sediments over a diel cycle to determine the mechanisms driving benthic-pelagic coupling of DOC. There was uptake of DOC during the dark and efflux during the light at all sites. DOC uptake rates were related to benthic respiration (dark O2 uptake) and effluxes were coupled to the trophic status (ratio of production to respiration) of the sediments. Highest uptake and efflux rates were observed at two high nutrient concentration sites. The DOC:DON ratio of water column dissolved organic matter (DOM) decreased during the dark and increased during the light indicating preferential uptake and release of carbon rich dissolved organic matter. The calculated carbon isotope ratio of the DOC taken up by the benthos was significantly more depleted than the bulk water column DOC pool, suggesting preferential uptake of selected components of the water column DOC pool. Generally the isotope ratio of the DOC released during the light was more enriched than that taken up during the dark, which suggests that the benthos has the potential to significantly alter the estuarine DOC pool. Uptake and efflux were coupled to respiration and algal grazing/mineralization, therefore increased nutrient loading may shift the composition of the estuarine DOC pool through changes in the magnitude of benthic DOC fluxes. A combination of biological (diel shifts in DOC production and consumption) and abiotic processes (flocculation) appear to be driving the observed benthic DOC dynamics at the study sites. This study was the first to measure carbon isotopic changes in the water column DOC pool due to benthic processes, and shows that the benthos can alter the estuarine DOC pool through diel differences in DOC uptake and efflux. 相似文献

The Loihi hydrothermal plume provides an opportunity to investigate iron (Fe) oxidation and microbial processes in a system that is truly Fe dominated and distinct from mid-ocean ridge spreading centers. The lack of hydrogen sulfide within the Loihi hydrothermal fluids and the presence of an oxygen minimum zone at this submarine volcano’s summit, results in a prolonged presence of reduced Fe within the dispersing non-buoyant plume. In this study, we have investigated the potential for microbial carbon fixation within the Loihi plume. We sampled for both particulate and dissolved organic carbon in hydrothermal fluids, microbial mats growing around vents, and the dispersing plume, and carried out stable carbon isotope analysis on the particulate fraction. The δ13C values of the microbial mats ranged from −23‰ to −28‰, and are distinct from those of deep-ocean particulate organic carbon (POC). The mats and hydrothermal fluids were also elevated in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compared to background seawater. Within the hydrothermal plume, DOC and POC concentrations were elevated and the isotopic composition of POC within the plume suggests mixing between background seawater POC and a 13C-depleted hydrothermal component. The combination of both DOC and POC increasing in the dispersing plume that cannot solely be the result of entrainment and DOC adsorption, provides strong evidence for in-situ microbial productivity by chemolithoautotrophs, including a likelihood for iron-oxidizing microorganisms. 相似文献

This paper presents the development, implementation, and application of a probabilistic framework for the pseudo-static analysis of pile foundations in liquefied and lateral spreading soils. The framework allows for rigorous consideration and propagation of the large uncertainties regarding quantification of seismic loads and soil–pile interaction relationships, which exist in the pseudo-static method. Building upon previous relationships proposed by others, the key features of the presented framework are outlined. In particular, the uncertainty estimation of the induced lateral soil displacements; superstructure inertia loads; and stiffness and strength of the liquefied soils are discussed in detail. The results of applying the pseudo-static method to a case study bridge structure are compared to that obtained using a rigorous seismic effective stress analysis within a similar framework. It is illustrated that the consideration of uncertainties in the pseudo-static framework provides enhanced communication of the foundation's seismic performance to end-users, and that the pseudo-static method provides seismic performance prediction consistent with that obtained using advanced seismic effective-stress analyses. 相似文献

Gas-hydrate related processes in deep-water marine settings exist on spatial scales that challenge conventional seismic reflection profiling to successfully image them. The conventional approach to acoustic identification of buried hydrates is to use advanced, cost-prohibitive survey techniques and highly customized software to define subsurface structure wherein compositional changes may be modeled and/or interpreted. This study adopts a different approach derived from recent theoretical advancements in signal processing. The method consists in optimal filtering high resolution, single-channel seismic reflection data using the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). The time series is decomposed in sub-components and the noisy portions are suppressed adopting the technique that we referred as Weighted Mode(s) EMD. The optimal filtering greatly improves the resolution and fidelity of the seismic data set.High Resolution single channel seismic profiles, acquired over a carbonate\hydrates site in the northern Gulf of Mexico, manipulated in such way, show a complex, shallow subsurface, and suggest potential evidence for buried gas hydrates. 相似文献

Mineralization of 14C‐radiolabled vinyl chloride ([1,2‐14C] VC) and cis‐dichloroethene ([1,2‐14C] cis‐DCE) under hypoxic (initial dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations about 0.1 mg/L) and nominally anoxic (DO minimum detection limit = 0.01 mg/L) was examined in chloroethene‐exposed sediments from two groundwater and two surface water sites. The results show significant VC and dichloroethene (DCE) mineralization under hypoxic conditions. All the sample treatments exhibited pseudo‐first‐order kinetics for DCE and VC mineralization over an extended range of substrate concentrations. First‐order rates for VC mineralization were approximately 1 to 2 orders of magnitude higher in hypoxic groundwater sediment treatments and at least three times higher in hypoxic surface water sediment treatments than in the respective anoxic treatments. For VC, oxygen‐linked processes accounted for 65 to 85% of mineralization at DO concentrations below 0.1 mg/L, and 14CO2 was the only degradation product observed in VC treatments under hypoxic conditions. Because the lower detection limit for DO concentrations measured in the field is typically 0.1 to 0.5 mg/L, these results indicate that oxygen‐linked VC and DCE biodegradation can be significant under field conditions that appear anoxic. Furthermore, because rates of VC mineralization exceeded rates of DCE mineralization under hypoxic conditions, DCE accumulation without concomitant accumulation of VC may not be evidence of a DCE degradative “stall” in chloroethene plumes. Significantly, mineralization of VC above the level that could reasonably be attributed to residual DO contamination was also observed in several nominally anoxic (DO minimum detection limit = 0.01 mg/L) microcosm treatments. 相似文献

Zambian willemite (Zn2SiO4) deposits occur in the metasedimentary carbonate rocks of the Proterozoic Katangan Supergroup. The most important orebodies
are located around Kabwe and contain both sulphides and willemite in dolomites of low metamorphic grade. The Star Zinc and
Excelsior prospects (Lusaka area), discovered in the early 1920s, occur in the metamorphic lithotypes of the late Proterozoic
Zambezi Supracrustal sequence, which were deposited in a transtensional basin formed during the oblique collision of the Kalahari
and Congo cratons. The deposits are hosted by the limestone and dolomitic marbles of the Cheta and Lusaka Formations. Structural
analysis indicates that several fracture sets host the deposits, which may be genetically related to the Pan-African Mwembeshi
dislocation zone (a major geotectonic boundary between the Lufilian Arc and the Zambezi Belt). In both prospects, willemite
replaces the marbles and is found along joints and fissures with open-space filling textures and locally may develop colloform
and vuggy fabrics as well. Silver as well as traces of germanium and cadmium have been detected within the willemite ore,
and lead or zinc sulphides are scarce or absent. Calcite locally replaces willemite. Willemite is associated with specular
hematite and franklinite and post-dates the Zn-spinel gahnite in the paragenesis. Genthelvite [Zn4Be3(SiO4)3S] occurs as a minor phase in irregular aggregates. The willemites from the Lusaka area, though Mn-poor, show green cathodoluminescence
colours and bright green fluorescence in short-wave UV (as the high-temperature willemites in USA). Thermometric analyses
of primary fluid inclusions in willemite yield homogenization temperatures that range from 160°C to 240°C and salinities of
8–16 wt.% equiv. NaCl. The homogenization temperatures suggest a hypogene–hydrothermal origin for the willemite concentrations.
The geochemistry of fluid inclusion leachates suggests that the hydrothermal fluids were brines derived from highly evaporated
seawater. Precise age constraints are currently lacking for the Lusaka area deposits, though the deposits are not deformed,
indicating that they post-date the Lufilian orogeny (~520 Ma). The possibility of precursor ores exists; the gahnite–franklinite–willemite
deposits could have been derived from a metamorphosed primary sulphide (or even nonsulphide) concentration that has subsequently
been completely destroyed. However, there is no real evidence of such a primary source for the willemite mineral association.
The Lusaka zinc ores may have been produced by an extensive hydrothermal system, with fluids discharging along basinal fracture
zones controlled by the pre-Pan-African rifting stage. A paragenesis similar to that of the Lusaka prospects has been proposed
to be a vector towards massive sulphide ores in several parts of the world; therefore, it is possible that these small willemite
showings in Zambia may be part of a much bigger, and still unexplored, zinc province. 相似文献

At several times during the Quaternary, a major eastward-flowing outlet glacier of the former Patagonian Ice Sheet occupied the Lago San Martin Valley in Argentina (49°S, 72°W). We present a glacial chronology for the valley based on geomorphological mapping and cosmogenic nuclide (10Be) exposure ages (n = 10) of boulders on moraines and lake shorelines. There are five prominent moraine belts in the Lago San Martin Valley, associated with extensive sandar (glaciofluvial outwash plains) and former lake shorelines. Cosmogenic nuclide exposure ages for boulders on these moraines indicate that they formed at 14.3 ± 1.7 ka, 22.4 ± 2.3 ka, 34.4 ± 3.4 ka to 37.6 ± 3.4 ka (and possibly 60 ± 3.5 ka), and 99 ± 11 ka (1σ). These dated glacier advances differ from published chronologies from the Lago San Martin Valley based on 14C age determinations from organic sediments and molluscs in meltwater channels directly in front of moraines or in kettleholes within end moraine ridges. The moraine boulder ages also point to possible pre-LGM glacial advances during the last glacial cycle and a key observation from our data is that the LGM glaciers were probably less extensive in the Lago San Martin Valley than previously thought. 相似文献
