Summary Three sets of different formulae expressed as functions of dynamic elastic constants of rock and some design parameters involved in a buried explosion are derived explicitly for the prediction of peak particle velocity (PPV) and peak air pressure (PAP). Separate equations are derived to estimate PPV and PAP for inside, outside, and at the boundary of the crater zone. The equations incorporate the physical parameters including (i) longitudinal wave velocity, (ii) shear wave velocity, (iii) density of rock, (iv) characteristic impedance of air, (v) detonation pressure of explosive, (vi) depth of hole, (vii) radius of hole, (viii) distance of the measuring transducer. Suggested equations are tested for a few hard and medium-hard rocks. Characteristic features and important conclusions are described.  相似文献

A field survey of thirty stream junctions from a small watershed, together with data collected by Miller (1958), allowed us to investigate morphometric adjustments occurring at confluences. The model proposed by Roy and Woldenberg (1986) was slightly modified and used as a tool for morphometric analysis. Two parameters are necessary in order to evaluate the rate of change in channel size at a confluence: the area ratio (channel capacity above the confluence: channel capacity below the confluence) and the discharge ratio (discharge of the minor tributary: discharge of the major tributary). Our data show that total channel capacity tends to decline below most confluences. A reduction in cross-sectional area implies an increase in average flow velocity. This interpretation is consistent with Lyell's observations and with results from recent flume experiments (Best and Reid, 1984).  相似文献

This investigation presents an analysis of the mobility of 37 organic solvents in saturated soil-water systems, focusing on adsorption phenomena at the solid-liquid interface This analysis was made, in part, by applying predictive expressions that estimate the potential magnitude of adsorption by soil materials Of the 37 solvents considered, 19 were classified as either “very highly mobile” or “highly mobile” and, thus, would have little tendency to be retained by soils to a significant extent, 12 were considered to have medium mobility and 6 low mobility None of these solvents were in the immobile class The limited information available indicates that these predictive expressions yield satisfactory first approximations of the magnitude of adsorption of these solvents by soil materials  相似文献

Mathematical modeling founded on a strong field data base can be a valuable tool for the analysis of ground-water contamination problems. The purposes of this paper are threefold: (1) we demonstrate the dilemma of a knowledgeable ground-water quality regulator whose regulatory decision-making process is confronted with the output of a mathematical model that is based on very limited field test data; (2) we demonstrate a method available to a knowledgeable regulator for assessing approximately a range of possible performances of a contaminated ground-water recovery well field using a range of input data derived from a very limited data base; and (3) we present a strong case for presenting mathematical model outputs as ranges of values rather than as unique solutions. A range is determined by an examination of the level of sophistication of the field data base. Our experience with 12 field sites wherein ground-water contamination has occurred has led us to conclude that field data are seldom, if ever, adequate to defend a unique solution from a mathematical model. Regulatory decisions generally can be reduced to minimization of risks based on the smallest range of model outputs that can be defended on the basis of the field data base. The more limited the field data base, the greater must be the range of defensible model outputs, and consequently, the greater the risk inherent in subsequent regulatory decisions. The knowledgeable regulator can assess the risks in the regulatory decision-making process only if he is able to assess the extent to which the field data base for the mathematical model output reflects state-of-the-art data collection and analysis technologies and methodologies. If an applicant for a permit or license submits a less than adequate data base and concomitantly a broad range of defensible model outputs, he inherently requests that the knowledgeable regulator accept a risk greater than that required if adequate aquifer testing techniques had been employed.  相似文献

A simple and inexpensive procedure is presented for the measurement of gaseous accommodation coefficients upon liquid or solid surfaces. The gas of interest is passed in laminar flow through an annular reactor and the profile of deposition is subsequently determined. The Cooney-Kim-Davies theoretical treatment of deposition in cylindrical systems is adapted to describe uptake on the walls of the annular reactor as a function of accommodation coefficient and diffusion coefficient. The accommodation coefficient () of ammonia on oxalic acid is determined in both cylindrical and annular systems and good agreement is found. Uptake of nitrogen dioxide on wet alkaline surfaces yields a value for of 2.5×10–4, and on solely wet surfaces a value of 8.7×10–5. Nitric and nitrous acids deposit to aqueous sodium carbonate/glycerol surfaces with values of of 1.5 × 10–2 and 4.3×10–3, respectively.  相似文献

The study presents digital preprocessing techniques, visual mapping capability of airborne X-band SAR data having diverse vegetation types in tropical wet climate. Spatial textural analysis methods have also been evaluated to enhance discriminability of the forest types and features. Attempt has been made to enhance the information by merging optical remote sensing data with microwave X-band response. Finally, the backscattering digital values have been correlated with qualitative and quantitative vegetation parameters. The Leaf Area Index has shown significant relationship with SAR image digital number value.  相似文献

In the first part of the paper, we study the relations between the frequency of maximum radio flux f max and the magnetic field strength at the photosphere B p and between the maximum radio flux F max and the field and its scale L for two differing flares occurring above very different photospheric conditions. It is shown that the simple relations predicted by the gyro-synchrotron emission mechanism f max B p and F max B 2 L 2 account for the fact that the flares produced microwave bursts of about the same F max, but of differing f max.The spectra of type IV radio bursts associated with three large proton flares with post-flare loops have been analyzed. It is found that the decimetric peak vanishes with the onset of the first optical loops. This is consistent with the model of Kopp and Pneuman (1976) which associates growing systems of loops with gradual fieldline reconnection above flaring regions.  相似文献

Observations of a surge prominence event on 31 May 1971 are discussed. The continuum emission observed during the upward acceleration of the surge is attributed to the scattering of photospheric radiation by free electrons. The observed scattered light intensity amounts to a few times 10–5 that of the central disk intensity leading to a column density of n e L1020 cm–2. The actual electron density when taking into account the presence of inhomogeneities is n e 1012 cm–3. The dynamic and morphological behaviour of the surge is considered.  相似文献

Geospatial presentation of habitat has become a key issue for planning conservation and management of any ecosystem. Hokersar wetland, one of the best resorts of migratory waterfowl in Kashmir, is under anthropogenic pressure and siltation due to floods. This has resulted in the degradation and change in the habitat quality of varied aquatic flora and fauna. Moreover, the seasonal changes affect the water level and land cover characteristics of the landscape. In the present study temporal mapping of the wetland has been carried out using the data sets for the autumn and spring seasons to assess the land cove/land use dynamics. The temporal change analysis, in the urban sprawl and the wetland, has been carried out to assess the rate of changes in the wetland and its environs. The wetland initially comprised of patch of marshy waterfowl habitat with some open water bodies. It has been fragmented into a large number of land uses because of anthropogenic activities. The increase in the settlement has been observed proportionate to the rate of fragmentation in the wetland. This study has created an information base, which will help to design conservation schemes for long term maintenance of the wetland.  相似文献

Following recommendations by the 19th Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, the area, causes and rates of upland soil erosion in England and Wales were investigated between 1997 and 1999. This paper describes the methods and results of the field survey of 1999 in which the extent of eroded ground was determined. 2. The area of degraded soil and the volume of eroded material were both determined from the dimensions of individual erosion features at 399 field sites located on an orthogonal grid across the uplands. Using measurements of individual erosion features, degraded soil extent in upland England and Wales was estimated at almost 25 000 ha, 2·46 per cent of the total upland area surveyed. Half this eroded area was revegetated and no longer subject to continued accelerated soil loss in 1999. The total volume of eroded material was estimated at 0·284 km3. Although deposition of eroded material occurred within 20 per cent of eroded field sites, the total volume of redeposited material was less than 1 per cent of the total volume of eroded soil. 3. Erosion was more extensive on peat soils than on dry, wet mineral or wet peaty mineral soils. In addition, the higher incidence of erosion at high altitudes and on low slopes reinforced the relationship between erosion and areas of peat formation.
