Summary In the present paper, a generalized method of solution of the problem of incompressible, unsteady, laminar boundary layer flow with the main-stream velocity of the formX(x) N(t) is developed. In many practical problems, the external velocity potential may be given in the above separable form, from theoretical and or experimental considerations.Presented in the Advance Level Winter Workshop in Fluid Dynamics, 1970, I.I.T. Summary The methods of transform calculus are made use of in finding the disturbances in a piezoelectric layer with an impulsive force at its free faces in presence of a magnetic field. The problem is solved for time dependent elastic compliance of the material of the layer.  相似文献

Summary A combination of Schwarz-Christofel method and numerical methods of solving non-linear differential equations has enabled us to solve for the effect of an anticline on the telluric field and apparent resistivity. From the computed anomaly curves we conclude that complete information about an anticline can be obtained only if its height is at least thirty per cent of the total depth to the basement. However, partial information; e.g., depth to the top of an anticline, can be obtained even for smaller anticlines.  相似文献

An area of 2300 sq km s has been mapped around Bundi based on aerial photo-interpretation, with selected field checks at key areas. The oldest rocks exposed are Aravallis comprising a thick pile of argillaceous sediments with thin interbeds of quartzite. The Aravalli rocks have been subjected to two phases of folding and have undergone a low grade of metamorphism. The Vindhyan rocks which comprise arenaceons, argillaceous and calcareous sediments constitute the Kaimur, Rewa and Bhander groups. These rocks occur south of the Aravallis with a faulted contact (Great Boundary Fault) for the major part, and also with unconformable contact at places. The upliftment of the Aravallis on the northern side of the Great Boundary Fault might have created the Vindhyan Basin south of it. The movement appears to have been gradual, keeping pace with the Vindhyan sedimentation, and was possibly revived even after the Vindhyan sedimentation as evidenced by the presence of folding and faulting in Vindhyans in the vicinity of the boundary fault. Strike faulting parallel to the boundary fault is very conspicious resulting in the repetition of the Vindhyan strata in the area east of Bundi. The Vindhyans of Bundi area indicate deposition of sediments in shallow water coastal barrier and lagoonal set-up as evidenced by sedimentary features such as tabular current bedding, ripple marks, huge blankets of sandstone, alternation of shale and limestone etc. Geomorphologically the area may be divided into three units namely:-(a) Pediment on Aravallis, (b) Structural hills on Vindhyan, expressing generally as hogback and cuesta ridges and strike valleys, and (c) Piedmont and alluvial plains (Chambal valley). The photo characters of the different litho-units have been described.  相似文献

The seasonal cycle of water masses and sea ice in the Hudson Bay marine system is examined using a three-dimensional coastal ice-ocean model, with 10 km horizontal resolution and realistic tidal, atmospheric, hydrologic and oceanic forcing. The model includes a level 2.5 turbulent kinetic energy equation, multi-category elastic-viscous-plastic sea-ice rheology, and two layer sea ice with a single snow layer. Results from a two-year long model simulation between August 1996 and July 1998 are analyzed and compared with various observations. The results demonstrate a consistent seasonal cycle in atmosphere-ocean exchanges and the formation and circulation of water masses and sea ice. The model reproduces the summer and winter surface mixed layers, the general cyclonic circulation including the strong coastal current in eastern Hudson Bay, and the inflow of oceanic waters into Hudson Bay. The maximum sea-ice growth rates are found in western Foxe Basin, and in a relatively large and persistent polynya in northwestern Hudson Bay. Sea-ice advection and ridging are more important than local thermodynamic growth in the regions of maximum sea-ice cover concentration and thickness that are found in eastern Foxe Basin and southern Hudson Bay. The estimate of freshwater transport to the Labrador Sea confirms a broad maximum during wintertime that is associated with the previous summers freshwater moving through Hudson Strait from southern Hudson Bay. Tidally driven mixing is shown to have a strong effect on the modeled ice-ocean circulation.  相似文献

There has been a significant advancement in the application of remote sensing from various space altitudes for inventorying and monitoring ofjhum (shifting) cultivation associated forest loss. The dynamic nature ofjhum system, complex physiography, small size of individualjhum plots and their discontinuous nature of distribution, highly heterogeneous vegetation and ever-changing atmospheric condition in the Arunachal Himalaya posses a great challenge to local flora and fauna. Indian Remote Sensing (IRS)-1C/1D LISS-III data were used to classify the current and abandonedjhum areas in Dibang valley district. The amount of area occupied by current and abandonedjhum corresponds to 199.34 km2(1.53%) and 225.40 km2(1.73%) respectively. Field data were collected following stratified random sampling method to gather information on plant community occurring in abandonedjhum cultivated areas. It was observed that only nine species out of 45 contribute to 50% of the important value index (IVI). Of the 45 species, 7 species (15.56%) have been found to be endemic to Eastern Himalayas. Population inducedjhum cultivation has led to deforestation, biodiversity loss, increased surface soil erosion, and sedimentation of water bodies in this area. The potential use of satellite-derived maps can best be used for better management and land use planning.  相似文献

A scanning t-test algorithm for detecting multiple time-scale abrupt changes in the level of a time-series was used to analyze an 8000 year time series of annual precipitation which was reconstructed from tree rings for the Nevada Climate Division 3 in the western USA. The tree ring samples were gathered from eight states in the southwestern USA. Twenty-two change-points were identified by the algorithm and these were used to partition the tree-ring series into twenty-three relatively Wet/Normal/Dry episodes. These twenty-three episodes were collaborated by a coherency analysis of abrupt changes between the precipitation reconstruction series and the TIC/δ18O records from cored sediments of Pyramid Lake in Nevada, and by comparison with published results from related studies. These episodes were also compared with studies of the global climate change and with records of climate change in China during the same periods. The results suggest that the precipitation reconstruction series is quite valuable for climate-change research on multi-centurial time-scales in the western USA, and that the scanning t-test and coherency detection algorithms may have a wide use for detecting multiple time-scale abrupt changes in a long time series. As the TIC and δ18O record series are high resolution with unequal sampling intervals ranging between 3 and 14 years, a new algorithm was developed to deal with the unequal time intervals in the series.  相似文献

The Indian crust, generally regarded as a stable continental lithosphere, experienced significant tectono-thermal reconstitution during the Phanerozoic. The earliest Phanerozoic tectonic process, which grossly changed the geological and geophysical character of the Precambrian crust, was during the Jurassic when this crustal block broke up from the Gondwana Supercontinent. There were two earlier abortive attempts to fragment the supercontinent in the Palaeozoic. Different types of geological processes were associated with these aborted events. The first was the intrusion of anorogenic alkali granites during the Early Palaeozoic (at 500±50 Ma), while the second was linked with formation of the Gondwana rift basins during Late Palaeozoic. The tectonic history of the Indian Shield subsequent to its separation from the Gondwanaland at around 165 Ma is a complex account of its northward journey, which was culminated with its collision with the northern continental blocks producing the mighty Himalayas in the process. Considerable reconstitution of the Indian Shield took place due to magma underplating when this lithospheric block passed over the four mantle plumes. While the underplating events grossly changed the geophysical character of the Indian Shield in isolated patches, the propagation of the underplated materials was assisted by the deep crustal fractures (geomorphologically expressed as lineaments), which formed during the break-up of the Gondwanaland. Several of these deep fractures evolved through the reactivation of the pre-existing (Precambrian) tectonic grains, while some others developed as new fractures in response to either the extensional stresses generated during the supercontinental break-up or the plume-lithosphere reactions. Significant geomorphological changes occurred in peninsular India subsequent to the continental collision. Most of these changes were brought about by the movements along the lineaments, which fragmented the Indian Shield into a number of rigid crustal blocks. The present day seismic behaviour of the Indian Shield is a reflection of movements of the rigid crustal blocks relative to each other. An interesting feature of the Phanerozoic geological history of the Indian Shield is the evolution of a number of sedimentary basins under different tectono-thermal regimes.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out at seven underground coal mines in India to characterise the responses of roof and pillars of underground workings to the vibrations induced by adjacent open-pit blasting. The roof rocks of the selected underground instrumented panels were having RMR between 36.7 to 57. Monitoring of strata behaviour was carried out before and after blasts. Arrangements were made to mount the transducers of seismographs in roof and pillars to monitor the vibration. Attempts were made to monitor the vibration simultaneously, for a blast, in the pillar and at the junction of the roof or away from the junction in the gallery. 102 sets of such vibration data were recorded in the underground mines. It was observed that the roof of underground roadways vibrated with higher peak particle velocity (PPV) compared to pillars. The amplification of vibration in the roof compared to pillars, away from the junction, was 1.02 to 2.58 times whereas at the junctions, it was 2.04 to 5.57 times.  相似文献
