Abstract On the basis of two well‐known ozone‐weather relationships, an algorithm is proposed that estimates total ozone amounts using readily available meteorological information. The technique has been labelled METOZ from Meteorological Total Ozone. A rationale and derivation of the technique is presented. METOZ total ozone amounts were generated for Toronto and Edmonton locations and compared with ground‐based Brewer spectrophotometer measures for these two stations in the Canadian ozone monitoring network for data from January to April 1989. Per cent differences between METOZ and Brewer total ozone measurements were calculated and are presented. This mid‐latitude wînter metoz algorithm was also used to produce a hemispherical total ozone field for 16 March 1986, which was compared with the corresponding TOMS data to demonstrate other potential applications of the technique. 相似文献

The intermediate polar (IP) HT Cam is unusual in that it shows no evidence for dense absorption in its spectrum. We analyse an XMM–Newton observation of this star, which confirms the absence of absorption and shows that the X-ray spin pulse is energy independent. The modulation arises solely from occultation effects and can be reproduced by a simple geometrical model in which the lower accretion footprint is fainter than the upper one.
We suggest that the lack of opacity in the accretion columns of HT Cam, and also of EX Hya and V1025 Cen, results from a low accretion rate owing to their being below the cataclysmic variable period gap. 相似文献

Along the south coast of Ireland, a shelly diamict facies, the Irish Sea Till, has been variously ascribed to subglacial deposition by a grounded Irish Sea glacier or to glacimarine sedimentation by suspension settling and iceberg rafting. Observations are presented here from five sites along the south coast to directly address this question. At these sites, sedimentary evidence is preserved for the onshore advance of a grounded Irish Sea glacier, which glacitectonically disturbed and eroded pre‐existing sediments and redeposited them as deformation till. Recession of this Irish Sea glacier resulted in the damming of ice‐marginal lakes in embayments along the south coast, into which glacilacustrine sedimentation then took place. These lake sediments were subsequently glacitectonised and reworked by overriding glacier ice of inland origin, which deposited deformation till on top of the succession. There is no evidence for deposition of the Irish Sea diamicts by glacimarine sedimentation at these sites. The widespread development of subglacial deforming bed conditions reflected the abundance of fine‐grained marine and lacustrine sediments available for subglacial erosion and reworking. Stratigraphical and chronological data suggest that the advance of a grounded Irish Sea glacier along the south coast occurred during the last glaciation, and this is regionally consistent with marine geological data from the Celtic Sea. These observations demonstrate extension of glacier ice far beyond its traditional limits in the Celtic Sea and on‐land in southern Ireland during the last glaciation, and remove the stratigraphical basis for chronological differentiation of surficial glacial drifts, and thus the Munsterian Glaciation, in southern Ireland. We present FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph-1 spectra (from the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope) of a sample of 34 faint 20.0 < g * < 21.1 A-type stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release, with the goal of measuring the velocity dispersion of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars in the remote Galactic halo, R ∼ 80 kpc . We show that colour selection with 1.08 < u *− g * < 1.40 and −0.2 < g *− r * < −0.04 minimizes contamination of the sample by less luminous blue stragglers. In classifying the stars we confine our attention to the 20 stars with spectra of signal-to-noise ratio >15 Å−1 . Classification produces a sample of eight BHB stars at distances 65–102 kpc from the Sun (mean 80 kpc), which represents the most distant sample of Galactic stars with measured radial velocities. The dispersion of the measured radial component of the velocity with respect to the centre of the Galaxy is 58 ± 15 km s−1 . This value is anomalously low in comparison with measured values for stars at smaller distances, as well as for satellites at similar distances. Seeking an explanation for the low measured velocity dispersion, further analysis reveals that six of the eight remote BHB stars are plausibly associated with a single orbit. Three previously known outer halo carbon stars also appear to belong to this stream. The velocity dispersion of all nine stars relative to the orbit is only 15 ± 4 km s−1 . Further observations along the orbit are required to trace the full extent of this structure on the sky. 相似文献

A number of symbiotic stars have been observed with ISO. In addition to a number of emission lines, SWS observations of the
symbiotic novae RR Tel and V1016 Cyg reveal prominent, broad 10 & 18 μm silicate dust features. The 10 μm features are similar
to the crystalline silicate profiles seen in classical novae. There is some evidence that the silicate brightness in V1016
Cyg varies with Mira-component phase. However, the silicate feature in RR Tel also showed some variation even though observations
were made at very similar Mira-component phases. PHT observations of S-type symbiotic stars show the IR emission to be dominated
by the red-giant component. However, an excess in the PHT-P filters from 10 to 15 μm is evident in all the stars, and there
may be a broad 3.2 μm absorption feature or a broad 3.8 μm emission feature. At this time we have no adequate physical explanations
for any of these features.
