Photosystem II (PSII) herbicides have been shown to affect the photosynthesis of corals at low, environmentally relevant concentrations. The recent detection of the PSII herbicide Irgarol-1051 in coastal waters of Hong Kong at concentrations above the EC(50) for reduction of photosynthesis of corals prompted further investigation into the extent of PSII herbicide pollution in coral reefs of Hong Kong. Snap-shot and passive samples were taken from coral reef sites and evaluated via HPLC/MS-MS and a novel bioanalytical technique. Low concentrations (less than 10 ng L(-1)) of diuron and atrazine were found at all study sites. Extracts from these samples concentrated by a factor of 10 were found to reduce the photosynthetic yield of zooxanthellae. It appears unlikely that herbicide pollution is a key issue in isolation but may act synergistically with other stressors to reduce the viability of Hong Kong's coral reefs. The study has also demonstrated the feasibility of combining sample extraction techniques with a coral specific bioanalytical technique for a sensitive assessment of risks associated with herbicide exposure in corals.  相似文献

This study numerically investigates effects of cutting riparian vegetation on flow characteristics by using a two-dimensional numerical model. The numerical model is based on depth-averaging the time- and volume-averaged Navier–Stokes equation with turbulent effects determined by the standard kε turbulence model. Drag forces exerted by the flow on vegetation are considered by adding source terms into momentum equations. In a rectangular channel and compound channel with vegetation along one side, numerical predictions show are in good agreement with those of previous studies. Five cutting scenarios, including the original, cutting along the main channel side, cutting along the bank side, alternative cutting, and reducing vegetative density, are analyzed in this study. The influences of the cutting scenarios on hydrodynamic behaviors are evaluated via numerical simulations. Simulation results suggest that cutting along the main channel side is the most effective scenario for reducing water depth and flow velocities.  相似文献

Two classes of anthropogenic landforms can be recognized in the permafrost environment of northern Alaska. Primary anthropogenic landforms result from the operation of natural geomorphic processes on man-made features such as roads or gravel berms. Secondary anthropogenic forms are identical to natural geomorphic features, but evolve as indirect consequences of human actions. The first group is illustrated by a badly thermokarsted road, which has caused serious drainage disruptions likely to persist over a long time period. Secondary forms are exemplified by fields of palsa-like features, which are common where pipeline-related construction activities or structures cause shallow ponding. Because they evolve rapidly, anthropogenic permafrost landforms can provide great insight into the development of natural periglacial features.  相似文献

Unrepresentative subsamples can be obtained from a sedimentary sample through repeated subdivision when using a mechanical microsplitter. Physical biases are often compounded by repetition and can result in wide variations among the estimates computed from the relative proportion of foraminifera of a given species. A new microsplitter, designed on a new principle, has been built to separate small representative subsamples. The device is based on the uniform distribution of unconsolidated sediments suspended in water. A subsample of the desired size is obtained by collecting sediment from an appropriate sedimentation area. Operation of this sampler is rapid and convenient and requires only one step, thus eliminating sampling biases introduced by repeated operations with other splitters. This new device was tested and found to be superior to the Otto Microsplitter according to some statistical goodness-of-fit tests conducted on the series.  相似文献

Measurements in Alaska in sub-polar night conditions have indicated that the size distribution of atmospheric aerosols varies significantly and systematically depending upon the type of air mass. Atmospheric aerosol particles are small and numerous in warm Pacific marine air mass systems and large and sparse in cold, Arctic-derived air mass systems. In a previous paper this was hypothesized to be associated with the progressive loss of the smallest particles by attachment to cloud droplets under the driving influence of thermal Brownian motion. A theory involving two parameters, (mean particle radius), and n0 (aerosol number concentration) was developed to describe the process. In the previous paper, the relationship where ν is the Junge power law exponent (ν 3) was derived and has recently been confirmed to acceptable accuracy with the use of a simple experiment which employed diffusive separation. The diffusion experiment has also allowed us to estimate that the fraction of time, φ, that the aerosol-laden polar air masses coexist in the presence of cloud is 0.01 < φ < 0.1. The submicron aerosol particles in Arctic-derived air masses flowing into central Alaska are deduced to have residence times on the order of 10 days.  相似文献

The Blackspring Ridge (BSR), located in south-central Alberta, Canada, is dominated by a prominent flute field. Flutes (elongated streamlined depressions) and ridges (elongate streamlined hills) are up to 15 km long and are composed of two material types: in situ bedrock, and in situ pre-Laurentide glaciation fluvial sand and gravel beds. The preglacial beds are Tertiary or early Quaternary in age. The beds are undisturbed, maintain primary bedding structures, and even maintain clast imbrication. No till overlies the gravel beds, although in places large granite boulder erratics lie on the surface, indicating that ice was present in the region in the past. Because the ridges are composed of preglacial materials, they are remnant erosional landforms rather than constructional landforms. Geomorphic and sedimentary evidence favor subglacial meltwater as the erosional agent, rather than ice. We suggest that the elevation of the BSR relative to basal ice would have resulted in confined subglacial meltwater flow, with associated flow acceleration and increased scouring resulting in flute formation. This meltwater stripped away any till cover, leaving behind only a few boulders. Observations at the BSR flute field preclude the possibility that flutes and remnant ridges are the result of deformation of soft clayey beds.  相似文献

Exposures of the Pleistocene Miami oolite in South Florida provide excellent examples of preserved primary sedimentary features and subsequent diagenetic changes of a ‘fossilized’ ooid sand body that has been subaerially exposed in a tropical climate since its deposition during the last interglacial highstand – Marine Isotope Stage 5e. Using a robust airborne light detection and ranging digital terrain model and select outcrops, a detailed analysis of the morphologies and dimensions of the different portions of the Miami oolite was conducted. The sand body, extending 95 km north to south and approximately 15 km wide, consists of shoals (or bars) separated by tidal channels and is partly bounded on the ocean‐facing side by a prograding barrier bar that collectively cover an area of approximately 1000 sq. km. Results of the quantitative interrogation of the Miami oolite are compared with those of previously published work from modern sand bodies on Great Bahama Bank including the Exumas, Schooners Cays and Tongue of the Ocean. Digital terrain models developed for these modern sand bodies on the Great Bahama Bank and the ancient Miami oolite were used as the basis for the definition of shoals, shoal crests (peaks) and channels which were examined with respect to their size, shape and orientation. The Exumas sand body is the best morphometric match when analysing the bars and the channels, and the Joulter Cays area is an analogue for the formation of the barrier bar and for burrow reworking of cross‐bedding within stabilized sand shoals. The Exumas is a particularly compelling analogue for the Miami oolite with respect to length and overall visual comparison between the morphologies of the sand bodies, shoal (or bar) shape, number of tidal channels, channel length and width, and high areas parallel to the strike trend of the sand body (islands in the Exumas and possible islands as part of the Miami oolite barrier bar). Despite ca 115 kyr of subaerial exposure and meteoric diagenesis including karst, the morphology of the Miami oolite is still relatively intact to the point where it can be easily analysed and meaningful comparisons to modern systems can be made. The Miami oolite serves as a key reference example for comparison to Holocene sand units in the Bahamas – it validates the concept of comparative sedimentology and in particular emphasizes how results from the modern can improve the interpretation of a fossilized example.  相似文献

We propose a climate stabilizing feedback loop involving biogenic sulfur. The mechanism is similar to the "CLAW" hypothesis (Charlson et al., 1987) but does not require the active participation of the ocean biota. The magnitude of the feedback response in this loop is derived by convective transport of biogenic sulfur over tropical oceans into the middle and high troposphere. Once aloft, the sulfur is oxidized into low-volatile species which nucleate new particles that later subside back into the subtropical marine boundary layer (MBL) and serve as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The MBL clouds are susceptible to albedo modification by changes in CCN concentrations (Platnick and Twomey, 1995). We envision that as global temperatures rise the sea surface warms, convective mass transport of sulfur will rise and the increased mass of sulfur in the upper troposphere will lead to higher numbers of particles or a shift in the particle size distribution to larger sizes. In either case, there is an increase in the number of particles large enough to act as CCN in the air subsiding backinto the MBL. The increase in CCN increases the cloud albedo, decreases the solar input to the surface and the temperature decreases. More measurements are needed to confirm whether the magnitude of increased sulfur carried through the loop as a function of increased sea surface temperature is sufficient to close the loop and regulate the climate.  相似文献
