Interplanetary dust grains entering the Jovian plasmasphere become charged, and those in a certain size range get magneto-gravitationally trapped in the corotating plasmasphere. The trajectories of such dust grains intersect the orbits of one or more of the Galilean satellites. Orbital calculations of micron sized dust grains show that they impact the outermost satellite Callisto predominantly on its leading face, while they impact the inner three — Io, Europa and Ganymede — predominantly on the trailing face. These results are offered as an explanation of the observed brightness asymmetry between the leading and trailing faces of the outer three Galilean satellites. The albedo of Io is likely to be determined by its volcanism. 相似文献

We report on large-scale horizontal flows in the solar convection zone and their variability in time and space using a local-helioseismology technique known as ring-diagram analysis. By performing this analysis on a dense mosaic of individual regions on the solar disk, i.e., a `Dense-Pack' sampling, and repeating the analysis periodically on several time scales, we are able to assess the variation of horizontal flows from day-to-day, week-to-week, and year-to-year. We find that although there are changes in the flows on all these time scales, there are also basic patterns that persist. On a daily time scale we observe that the flow is reduced in those areas which are occupied by large active regions. On somewhat longer time-scales we see bands of persistent fast and slow zonal flow that are identifiable as torsional oscillations. As we examine these bands during a series of years, we find that these bands migrate toward the equator as solar activity increases. Similarly, the latitudes at which the meridional flow reaches maximum follow these regions of fast zonal flow as they migrate equatorwards. Water column optical properties of Greater Florida Bay were investigated in the context of their impacts on seagrass distribution.
Scattering played an important role in light attenuation throughout the shallow water system. The northwest region was characterized
by an absence of seagrasses and the highest scattering by particles, mostly from resuspended carbonate sediments. Higher seagrass
densities were observed in the open waters just north of the Florida Keys, where absorption coefficients were dominated by
colored dissolved organic material and scattering was lower than in the northwest region. Patchy dense seagrass meadows were
observed in the clear waters south of the Keys where scattering and absorption were low and contributed equally to light attenuation.
In general, seagrasses were observed in areas where >7.5% of surface irradiance reached the plants and where optical properties
were not dominated by scattering. Although the prevention of eutrophication and nuisance algal blooms may be necessary for
preserving seagrass meadows in this system, our observations and model calculations indicate that nutrient control alone may
be insufficient to permit seagrass recolonization if optical properties are dominated by particulate scattering from resuspended

We present measurements of the solar meridional flow using time-distance analysis based on Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) data. In an attempt to detect the deep equatorward flow, which is believed to be a very small amplitude motion, we averaged time-difference measurements over a 15-year period and utilized both phase-velocity and high-m filtering techniques. These method seem to be capable of extending the meridional-flow measurements to the deep layers of the convection zone, down to 0.7?R ⊙. Typical uncertainties for most depths within ±?35° latitude are less than 0.03 s. At higher latitudes, the uncertainties are about 0.06 s. There is a significant abrupt decrease in the nature of the travel-time differences for measurements that probe the bottom of the convection zone. 相似文献

The Practical Salinity Scale 1978 (PSS) defines the relationship among salinity, electrical conductivity, temperature, and pressure. Strictly speaking, the PSS is only applicable to waters with the same relative chemical composition as standard seawater. We have tested the predictions of the PSS for samples of Atlantic and Pacific waters. The results indicate that the PSS is valid for these natural seawaters over the defined temperature range of the scale. 相似文献
