We revisit a fundamental question in mineral dissolution kinetics, namely: is the function of dissolution rate versus the distance from equilibrium continuous, or does the “switch” between two different reaction mechanisms cause a discontinuity, i.e., a kinetic bifurcation? Based on new insight from experimental results, including direct observations of retreating crystal surfaces with vertical scanning interferometry (VSI), we present evidence that a discontinuity does indeed exist. Through a carefully designed near-equilibrium albite dissolution experiment, we show how a non-steady-state dissolution rate observed on a crystal surface reflects reactivity inherited from earlier episodes of undersaturation. This outcome forces us to re-think the common practice of extrapolating overall dissolution rates measured far-from-equilibrium to near-equilibrium conditions. 相似文献

Atlanta’s urban heat island under extreme heat conditions and potential mitigation strategies 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The urban heat island (UHI), together with summertime heat waves, foster’s biophysical hazards such as heat stress, air pollution, and associated public health problems. Mitigation strategies such as increased vegetative cover and higher albedo surface materials have been proposed. Atlanta, Georgia, is often affected by extreme heat, and has recently been investigated to better understand its heat island and related weather modifications. The objectives of this research were to (1) characterize temporal variations in the magnitude of UHI around Metro Atlanta area, (2) identify climatological attributes of the UHI under extremely high temperature conditions during Atlanta’s summer (June, July, and August) period, and (3) conduct theoretical numerical simulations to quantify the first-order effects of proposed mitigation strategies. Over the period 1984–2007, the climatological mean UHI magnitude for Atlanta-Athens and Athens-Monticello was 1.31 and 1.71°C, respectively. There were statistically significant minimum temperature trends of 0.70°C per decade at Athens and −1.79°C per decade at Monticello while Atlanta’s minimum temperature remained unchanged. The largest (smallest) UHI magnitudes were in spring (summer) and may be coupled to cloud-radiative cycles. Heat waves in Atlanta occurred during 50% of the years spanning 1984–2007 and were exclusively summertime phenomena. The mean number of heat wave events in Atlanta during a given heat wave year was 1.83. On average, Atlanta heat waves lasted 14.18 days, although there was quite a bit of variability (standard deviation of 9.89). The mean maximum temperature during Atlanta’s heat waves was 35.85°C. The Atlanta-Athens UHI was not statistically larger during a heat wave although the Atlanta-Monticello UHI was. Model simulations captured daytime and nocturnal UHIs under heat wave conditions. Sensitivity results suggested that a 100% increase in Atlanta’s surface vegetation or a tripling of its albedo effectively reduced UHI surface temperature. However, from a mitigation and technological standpoint, there is low feasibility of tripling albedo in the foreseeable future. Variation of stream temperature among mesoscale habitats within stream reaches: southern Appalachians 下载免费PDF全文
Stream mesoscale habitats have systematic topographic relationships to hyporheic flow patterns, which may create predictable temperature variation between mesoscale habitat types. We investigated whether systematic differences in temperature metrics occurred between mesoscale habitats within reaches of small streams tributary to the upper Little Tennessee River, southern Appalachians. Surface water temperature was recorded over three or four mid‐summer days in four mesoscale habitat types: riffle, main riffle, pool and alcove in 44 stream segments (sites). Temperature metrics were calculated for each mesoscale habitat relative to the mean value of the metric over the stream: Δ maximum temperature, Δ average maximum temperature and Δ maximum daily variation and also for each site: standard deviation of the maximum temperature and average diurnal variation (ADV). Sites were categorized as fully or partially forested. Pool tailouts had statistically significantly lower Δ maximum temperature and Δ average maximum temperature than riffle tailouts in partially forested sites, although differences were small. This was the opposite of what was expected in the presence of hyporheic exchange, indicating hyporheic exchange is not a dominant driver of mesoscale habitat temperatures at these sites. Temperature differences between mesoscale habitat units were small and unlikely to have ecological significance. We also evaluated relationships between stream temperature and riparian condition, watershed % impervious surfaces, watershed % non‐forested and elevation. ADV and standard deviation of the maximum temperature were significantly higher in partially forested sites, indicating that partially forested sites have greater temperature ranges and spatial variation of maximum temperatures. Watershed simulation models are used extensively to investigate hydrologic processes, landuse and climate change impacts, pollutant load assessments and best management practices (BMPs). Developing, calibrating and validating these models require a number of critical decisions that will influence the ability of the model to represent real world conditions. Understanding how these decisions influence model performance is crucial, especially when making science‐based policy decisions. This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model in West Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) to examine the influence of several of these decisions on hydrological processes and streamflow simulations. Specifically, this study addressed the following objectives (1) demonstrate the importance of considering intra‐watershed processes during model development, (2) compare and evaluated spatial calibration versus calibration at outlet and (3) evaluate parameter transfers across temporal and spatial scales. A coarser resolution (HUC‐12) model and a finer resolution model (NHDPlus model) were used to support the objectives. Results showed that knowledge of watershed characteristics and intra‐watershed processes are critical to produced accurate and realistic hydrologic simulations. The spatial calibration strategy produced better results compared to outlet calibration strategy and provided more confidence. Transferring parameter values across spatial scales (i.e. from coarser resolution model to finer resolution model) needs additional fine tuning to produce realistic results. Transferring parameters across temporal scales (i.e. from monthly to yearly and daily time‐steps) performed well with a similar spatial resolution model. Furthermore, this study shows that relying solely on quantitative statistics without considering additional information can produce good but unrealistic simulations. Paleomagnetic studies have been made of certain constituents of the Bay St. George sub-basin. Specifically, results are reported from the Spout Falls Formation (Tournaisian), the Jeffreys Village Member of the Robinsons River Formation (Visean), and the Searston Formation (Namurian-Westphalian). The following magnetizations have been isolated: Spout Falls A (Tournaisian) with D = 343.5°, I = ?22.7°, k = 61.2, α95 = 7.1° and the corresponding pole at 28.6°N, 139.5°E (4.5°, 8.5°); Spout Falls B (Kiaman) with D = 166.7°, I = 12.2°, k = 51.7, α95 = 10.7° and the corresponding pole at 34.5°S, 42.7°W (5.5°, 10.9°); Jeffreys Village A (Visean) with D = 351.2°, I = ?27.3°, k = 54.0, α95 = 7.6° and the corresponding pole at 26.5°N, 130.7°E (4.5°, 8.3°); Searston A (Namurian) with D = 161.7°, I = 11.7°, k = 107, α95 = 7.4° and the corresponding pole at 33.9°S, 37.2°W (3.8°, 7.5°); and Searston C with D = 111.6°, I = ?13.8°, k = 28.8, α95 = 14.5° and the corresponding pole at 19.6°S, 19.0°E (7.6°, 14.8°). After comparison with paleopoles of similar ages derived from eastern and western Newfoundland rocks, from constituents of the east coast basin and for interior North America, it is concluded that: (1) it is unlikely that any large scale relative motion took place since the Early Carboniferous between eastern and western Newfoundland; (2) it is unlikely that any north-south relative motion took place between the east coast basin and the Bay St. George sub-basin; and (3) the Bay St. George sub-basin results do not support the earlier proposed displaced terrane hypothesis of the northern Appalachians in as much as the motions during the Carboniferous are not supported. There is evidence of the northward motion of the Appalachians and North America as a whole during the Carboniferous. The magnetostratigraphic horizon marker in the Carboniferous separating a dominant normal and reversed magnetization on the older side and an entirely reversed (Kiaman) magnetization on the younger side may be placed in the Bay St. George sub-basin at the base of the Searston Formation. 相似文献
