Net ecosystem metabolism (NEM) is becoming a commonly used ecological indicator of estuarine ecosystem metabolic rates. Estuarine
ecosystem processes are spatially and temporally variable, but the corresponding variability in NEM has not been properly
assessed. Spatial and temporal variability in NEM was assessed in four western Gulf of Mexico shallow water estuaries. NEM
was calculated from high-frequency dissolved oxygen measurements. Interbay, intrabay, and water column spatial scales were
assessed for NEM, gross primary production (GPP), and respiration (R) rate variability. Seasonal, monthly, and daily temporal
scales in NEM, GPP, and R were also assessed. Environmental conditions were then compared to NEM to determine which factors
were correlated with each temporal and spatial scale. There was significant NEM spatial variability on interbay, intrabay,
and water column spatial scales. Significant spatial variability was ephemeral, so it was difficult to ascertain which environmental
conditions were most influential at each spatial scale. Significant temporal variability in NEM on seasonal, monthly, and
daily scales was found and it was correlated to temperature, salinity, and freshwater inflow, respectively. NEM correlated
strongly with dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity, but the relationships where different in each bay. The dynamics
of NEM on daily scales indicate that freshwater inflow events may be the main driver of NEM in the semiarid estuaries studied.
The variable nature of NEM found here is further evidence that it is not valid to use single station monitoring deployments
for assessment of whole estuarine ecosystem metabolic rates in large ecosystems. The relationship between NEM and temperature,
salinity, and freshwater inflow events could drive predictive models assessing the potential influence of projected climate
change and watershed development scenarios on estuarine metabolic rates. 相似文献

Management actions to control invasive aquatic species can have significant ecosystem-scale effects. We evaluated the water
chemistry and nutrient effects of mechanical shredding to control water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in an agricultural slough and a tidal wetland on the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California. Shredding was conducted
with two types of shredder boats in fall of 2003 and another boat in spring of 2004. Shredding measurably affected water quality,
but specific effects varied as a function of shredding site and season. Significant increases were observed for total Kjeldahl
nitrogen and total phosphorus for all experiments. Dissolved oxygen effects varied by site, decreasing after shredding at
the agricultural slough but increasing at the tidal wetland. The increase in dissolved oxygen likely resulted from tidal incursions
from the adjacent river. A year-long time series of dissolved oxygen data indicated a negative relationship between hyacinth
abundance and dissolved oxygen concentrations. Hyacinth contained similar tissue concentrations of mercury to underlying sediments,
suggesting that plant harvesting could aid mercury remediation efforts. Simple mass calculations indicated that Delta-wide
shredding operations could cause between 0.1% and 9.6% increases in the overall abundance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus
in the Delta water column. Results suggest that local effects of management actions to control invasive aquatic plants will
vary widely as a function of site-specific hydrology, but that estuary-wide effects would be limited. 相似文献

Multi-dimensional Markov chain conditional simulation (or interpolation) models have potential for predicting and simulating categorical variables more accurately from sample data because they can incorporate interclass relationships. This paper introduces a Markov chain random field (MCRF) theory for building one to multi-dimensional Markov chain models for conditional simulation (or interpolation). A MCRF is defined as a single spatial Markov chain that moves (or jumps) in a space, with its conditional probability distribution at each location entirely depending on its nearest known neighbors in different directions. A general solution for conditional probability distribution of a random variable in a MCRF is derived explicitly based on the Bayes’ theorem and conditional independence assumption. One to multi-dimensional Markov chain models for prediction and conditional simulation of categorical variables can be drawn from the general solution and MCRF-based multi-dimensional Markov chain models are nonlinear. 相似文献

The distribution of platinum group elements (PGEs) in massive sulfides and hematite–magnetite±pyrite assemblages from the
recently discovered basalt-hosted Turtle Pits hydrothermal field and in massive sulfides from the ultramafic-hosted Logatchev
vent field both on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was studied and compared to that from selected ancient volcanic-hosted massive sulfide
(VHMS) deposits. Cu-rich samples from black smoker chimneys of both vent fields are enriched in Pd and Rh (Pd up to 227 ppb
and Rh up to 149 ppb) when compared to hematite–magnetite-rich samples from Turtle Pits (Pd up to 10 ppb, Rh up to 1.9 ppb).
A significant positive correlation was established between Cu and Rh in sulfide samples from Turtle Pits. PGE chondrite-normalized
patterns (with a positive Rh anomaly and Pd and Au enrichment), Pd/Pt and Pd/Au ratios close to global MORB, and high values
of Pd/Ir and Pt/Ir ratios indicate mafic source rock and seawater involvement in the hydrothermal system at Turtle Pits. Similarly
shaped PGE chondrite-normalized patterns and high values of Pd/Pt and Pd/Ir ratios in Cu-rich sulfides at Logatchev likely
reflect a similar mechanism of PGE enrichment but with involvement of ultramafic source rocks. 相似文献

CdS/rectorite nanocomposite was synthesized via a cation-exchange reaction followed by a sulfurization process. The obtained
samples were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), transmission electron
microscope (TEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), and thermal analysis. The measured results indicate that CdS species
in the composites exist in the form of pillars and nanoparticles, the crystallized CdS particles are in the hexagonal symmetry.
The photocatalytic activities of the pillared nanocomposite were enhanced significantly comparing with the bare rectorite
and the pure CdS. Moreover, the photostabilities of the obtained nanocomposites are also better than that of the pure CdS

This paper shows a detailed study on the seismic passive earth pressure behind a non-vertical cantilever retaining wall using
pseudo-dynamic analysis. A planar failure surface has been considered behind the retaining wall. The effects of soil friction
angle, wall inclination, wall friction angle, horizontal and vertical earthquake acceleration on the passive earth pressure
have been explored. Unlike the Mononobe–Okabe method, which incorporates pseudo-static analysis, the present analysis predicts
a nonlinear variation of passive earth pressure along the wall. The results have been thoroughly compared with the existing

Effect of chemical fertilizers (urea, NH4Cl, Ca(NO3)2, KCl and KH2PO4) on the fractionation of Cu, Cr and Ni was studied by a 4-month incubation experiment. Using sequential extraction procedure,
it was found that the application of fertilizers could change the distribution of Cu, Cr and Ni in the fractions of soil.
Applying urea (CO(NH2)2) significantly decreased the concentrations of Cu, Cr and Ni in water soluble plus exchangeable (WE) fraction, but increased
those in Fe–Mn oxides bound (FM) fraction (p < 0.01). However, application of NH4Cl caused an increase in the WE fraction by 27.7% for Cu, 111.5% for Cr and 20.4% for Ni. The CO(NH2)2 raised the soil pH from 4.51 to 4.96, whereas NH4Cl lowered the pH of soil by 0.44 units. The WE fraction of the three heavy metals was significantly increased, while the
FM fraction was significantly decreased by adding KCl (p < 0.01). Moreover, the supply of KH2PO4 reduced the WE and carbonate bound (CB) fractions of Cu, Cr and Ni in the soil, however, it raised Cu and Ni in the residual
(RS) fraction and Cr in the FM fraction. In addition, the mobility index indicated that KCl and NH4Cl increased the mobility of Cu, Cr and Ni in the soil, whereas urea and KH2PO4 decreased the mobility of the three metals in the soil. These results suggest that applying chemical fertilizers does not
only provide plant nutrients, but may also change the speciation and mobility of heavy metals in the soil. 相似文献

The origin of compositional heterogeneities among the magmas parental to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) was investigated using
a single rock piece of the olivine-phyric basalt from 43°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge (AII D11-177). The exceptional feature of this
sample is presence of very primitive olivine crystals (90–91 mol% Fo) that are significantly variable in terms of CaO (0.15–0.35 wt%).
A population of low-Ca olivine (0.15–0.25 wt% CaO) is also notably distinct from high-Ca olivine population in AII D11-177,
and primitive MORB olivine in general, in having unusual assemblage of trapped mineral and glass inclusions. Mineral inclusions
are represented by high-magnesian (Mg# 90.7–91.1 mol%) orthopyroxene and Cr-spinel, distinctly enriched in TiO2 (up to 5 wt%, c.f. <1 wt% in common MORB spinel). Glass inclusions associated with orthopyroxene and high-Ti Cr-spinel have
andesitic compositions (53–58 wt% SiO2). Compared to the pillow-rim glass and “normal” MORB inclusions, the Si-rich glass inclusions in low-Ca olivine have strongly
reduced Ca and elevated concentrations of Ti, Na, K, P, Cl, and highly incompatible trace elements. Strong variability is
recorded among glass inclusions within a single olivine phenocrysts. We argue that the observed compositional anomalies are
mineralogically controlled, and thus may arise from the interaction between hot MORB magmas and crystal cumulates in the oceanic

Natural alexandrite Al2BeO4:Cr from Malyshevo near Terem Tschanka, Sverdlovsk, Ural, Russia, has been characterized by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microprobe, X-ray single-crystal diffractometry and by electronic structure calculations in order to determine oxidation state and location of iron. The sample contains 0.3 wt% of total iron oxide. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum can be resolved into three doublets. Two of them with hyperfine parameters typical for octahedrally coordinated high-spin Fe3+ and Fe2+, respectively, are assigned to iron substituting for Al in the octahedral M2-site. The third doublet is attributed to Fe3+ in hematite. Electronic structure calculations in the local spin density approximation are in reasonable agreement with experimental data provided that expansion and/or distortion of the coordination octahedra are presumed upon iron substitution. The calculated hyperfine parameters of Fe3+ are almost identical for the M1 and M2 positions, but the calculated ligand-field splitting is by far too large for high-spin Fe3+ on M1. 相似文献
