The stable carbon isotope ratios of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC) and methyl chloride emitted from biomass burning were determined by analyzing seven whole air samples collected during different phases of the burning process as part of a laboratory study of wood burning. The average of the stable carbon isotope ratios of emitted alkanes, alkenes and aromatic compounds is identical to that of the burnt fuel; more than 50% of the values are within a range of ±1.5 of thecomposition of the burnt fuel wood. Thus for the majority of NMHC emitted from biomass burning stable carbon isotope ratio of the burnt fuel a good first order approximation for the isotopic composition of the emissions. Of the more than twenty compounds we studied, only methyl chloride and ethyne differed in stable carbon isotope ratios by more than a few per mil from the composition of the fuel. Ethyne is enriched in 13C by approximately 20–30, and most of the variability can beexplained by a dependence on flame temperature. The 13C values decreaseby 0.019 /K (±0.0053/K) with increasing temperature. Methyl chloride is highly depleted in 13C, on average by25. However the results cover a wide range of nearly 30. Specifically, in two measurements with wood from Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus delegatensis) as fuel we observed the emission of extremely light methyl chloride (–68.5and–65.5). This coincides with higher than average emission ratiosfor methyl chloride (15.5 × 10–5 and 18 ×10–5 mol CH3Cl/mol CO2). These high emission ratios are consistent with the highchlorine content of the burnt fuel, although, due to the limited number of measurements, it would be premature to generalize these findings. The limited number of observations also prevents any conclusion on a systematic dependence between chlorine content of the fuel, emission ratios and stable carbon isotope ratio of methyl chloride emissions. However, our results show that a detailed understanding of the emissions of methyl chloride from chloride rich fuels is important for understanding its global budget. It is also evident that the usefulness of stable carbon isotope ratios to constrain the global budget of methyl chloride will be complicated by the very large variability of the stable carbon isotope ratio of biomass burning emissions. Nevertheless, ultimately the large fractionation may provide additional constraints for the contribution of biomass burning emissions to the atmospheric budget of methyl chloride.  相似文献

The intensive field study POPCORN (Photo-Oxidant Formation by Plant Emitted Compounds and OH Radicals in North-Eastern Germany) was carried out in a rural area of North-Eastern Germany during August 1994. An overview of the objectives, measurements and major results of this campaign is presented. Measurements of a set of relevant atmospheric trace compounds, including the hydroxyl radical, along with meteorological data were performed to increase the understanding of OH radical chemistry and photo-oxidant formation. Additionally, plant emissions and the exchange of trace gases between a maize field and the atmosphere were investigated. Budgets of selected trace gases were calculated to assess the relative importance of local sources, chemistry or transport. Intercomparisons between measurement techniques were a central issue of POPCORN and included measurements of OH, hydrocarbons, formaldehyde, photolysis frequencies and vertical fluxes. OH radical concentrations were measured simultaneously by LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) and DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy). Both methods showed good agreement. Maximum OH concentrations were around 107 cm–3 and the diurnal cycles closely followed the rate of primary production via ozone photolysis. Generally, the trace gas composition during POPCORN was characterized by relatively low concentrations of most compounds, e.g. CO: 85–200 ppb, ethane: 0.6–2 ppb, and moderate NOx levels: 0.5–5 ppb (at noontime). Concentrations of individual biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOC) were mostly well below 100 ppt. However, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde which partly originate from biological sources were observed at mixing ratios of some ppb.  相似文献

We report here our experiences from using easily acquired web-cam components for collaborative ventures in the Earth sciences. We have used a variety of hardware and different software. We demonstrate from various locations in the U.S.A. the feasibility of using web-cam in multitudinous activities, relevant for conducting research and knowledge dissemination. We summarize the quality of the connections from the various combinations of communicating parties. Today, web-cams can be utilized as an economical and viable means of point-to-point communication in the Earth science community. Greater bandwidth is sorely needed for activities such as multi-party conferencing on the present internet network. We propose that web-cam can be readily deployed as a web-service for facilitating collaborative research over the GRID infrastructure, using the middleware Narada-Brokering. The space density of life-bearing primordial planets in the solar vicinity may amount to ~8.1×104?pc?3 giving total of ~1014 throughout the entire galactic disk. Initially dominated by H2 these planets are stripped of their hydrogen mantles when the ambient radiation temperature exceeds 3?K as they fall from the galactic halo to the mid-plane of the galaxy. The zodiacal cloud in our solar system encounters a primordial planet once every 26 My (on our estimate) thus intercepting an average mass of 103 tonnes of interplanetary dust on each occasion. If the dust included microbial material that originated on Earth and was scattered via impacts or cometary sublimation into the zodiacal cloud, this process offers a way by which evolved genes from Earth life could become dispersed through the galaxy.  相似文献

An alternative approach is proposed to develop an improved permeability model for coalbed methane (CBM) and CO2-enhanced CBM (ECBM) recovery, and CO2 geosequestration in coal. This approach integrates the textural and mechanical properties to describe the anisotropy of gas permeability in coal reservoirs. The model accounts for the stress dependent deformation using a stress–strain correlation, which allows determination of directional permeability for coals. The stress–strain correlation was developed by combining mechanical strain with sorption-induced strain for any given direction. The mechanical strain of coal is described by the general thermo-poro-elastic constitutive equations for solid materials under isothermal conditions and the sorption-induced strain is approximated by treating the swelling/shrinkage of coal matrix equivalent to the thermal contraction/expansion of materials. With directional strains, the permeability of coal in any given direction can be modeled based on the theory of rock hydraulics. In this study, the proposed model was tested with both literature data and experiments. The experiments were carried out using a specially designed true tri-axial stress coal permeameter (TTSCP). The results show that the proposed model provides better predictions for the literature data compared with other conventional coal permeability models. The model also gives reasonable agreement between the predicted and measured stress–strains and directional permeabilities under laboratory conditions.  相似文献

During the field campaign POPCORN (Photo oxidant formation by plant emitted compounds and OH radicals in North-eastern Germany) in Pennewitt (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) in August 1994, carbon monoxide and nonmethane hydrocarbons were measured over a large maize field by in-situ gas chromatography. Throughout the campaign CO and NMHC showed, even for a remote rural area, unexpectedly low mixing ratios. Except a few episodes, CO mixing ratios were around 120 ppb. Ethane was the only hydrocarbon showing mixing ratios exceeding 1 ppb. The mixing ratios of all other NMHC ranged between several hundred ppt and the lower limit of detection which was between 20 and 5 ppt depending on the compound. During three frontal passages CO and NMHC mixing ratios increased significantly, while between August 13 and 16, 1994, polar air masses were encountered with CO and NMHC mixing ratios dropping to values which are typical for North Atlantic background air. During this period average CO mixing ratios were 85 ppb and ethane as the most abundant hydrocarbon decreased to 650 ppt. The large-scale meteorological situation is reflected in an unusual frequency distribution of CO. The distribution shows three maxima which can be assigned to the periods of the frontal passages, to the observation of polar air masses and the rest of the campaign. Two-day backward trajectories were calculated in order to obtain information about the origin of the air masses transported to the site. The observed NMHC and CO data can be attributed to the origin of the air masses and the air mass trajectories. NMHC and CO mixing ratios were well correlated indicating that these compounds originated from similar mostly anthropogenic sources. An exception was isoprene which showed no correlation with CO. With values below 100 ppt the mixing ratio of isoprene, which is emitted by terrestrial vegetation, was also unexpectedly low during the first half of the campaign although the maximum temperatures were around 35°C.  相似文献

The results of an intercomparison campaign of eight different long path UV-visible DOAS instruments measuring NO2, O3 and SO2 concentrations in a moderately polluted urban site are presented. For effective optical path lengths of 230 and 780 m the overall spread of these measurements (±1) are 5×1010, 6×1010 and 1×1010 molec·cm-3 (2.0, 2.4, and 0.4 ppb) for these molecules respectively when all instruments used a common set of absorption cross sections. The remaining differences are not completely random and the systematic differences are attributed to the different retrieval methods used for each instrument.  相似文献

During the POPCORN campaign between 3 and 24 August 1994 we measured peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) in a rural area of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (North-Eastern Germany) above a corn field. A total of about 5000 PAN measurements were carried out within the three weeks of the campaign. Measured PAN mixing ratios ranged from below the detection limit of 10 ppt up to an afternoon maximum of 1 ppb. The mean value of all data was 140 ppt. The daily mean PAN mixing ratios were typically in the range of 50 to 250 ppt, but during a clean air episode PAN mixing ratios of well below 40 ppt were observed. The characteristic relative diurnal variation of the PAN mixing ratios with a late night/early morning minimum and an afternoon maximum persisted during these episodes. The daily averages of the PAN mixing ratios showed clear episodic variations which coincided with the duration of typical synoptic episodes of two to six days duration. Based on the measurements of the various parameters determining the PAN formation and destruction rates, the local budget for PAN was calculated. During daytime the calculated net photochemical formation rate of PAN was nearly always significantly higher than the observed change of the PAN concentration. This demonstrates that substantial amounts of PAN (often in the range of several hundred ppt/h) were exported from the corn field. The resulting removal of NOx to some extent effects the budget of nitrogen oxides (NOx), but the export of odd oxygen radicals in the form of PAN during daytime often amounted up to 30–50% of the OH-radical formation by ozone photolysis. Thus the importance of PAN as reservoir and transport medium for odd oxygen radicals can be very substantial and may have a significant impact on the budget and distribution of odd oxygen radicals.  相似文献

Mafic gneisses and associated paragneisses from the Cabo Frio Tectonic Domain in the southeastern part of the Ribeira Belt, along the coast of Rio de Janeiro State in southeast Brazil, were subjected to a geochemical and Sm–Nd isotope study. Four lithotypes are distinguished: aluminous paragneisses (mainly sillimanite–kyanite–garnet–biotite gneiss), calcsilicate lenses, quartzo–feldspathic metasedimentary gneisses and mafic–ultramafic lenses. The whole-rock major and trace, including rare earth element distributions in the mafic–ultramafic intercalations indicate that derivation from subalkaline basalt/gabbro of tholeiitic affinity with E-MORB signature from a non-subduction environment. These mafic rocks have positive εNd(t) and TDM of 1.1 Ga. The metasedimentary rocks have negative εNd(t) and TDM of 1.7 Ga. A Sm–Nd whole rock isochron of mafic rocks yielded an age of 604 ± 38 Ma for the crystallization. This matches with the age of some detrital zircon grains from the paragneisses. The depositional basin, named Buzios–Palmital, was active at least until 620 Ma (age of the youngest detrital zircon) and was subsequently deformed and metamorphosed at ca. 525 Ma (age of metamorphic zircons) during the Buzios Orogeny. It is interpreted as a back arc basin with relation to the 630 Ma magmatic arc of the Oriental Terrane in the Ribeira Belt to the NW. However, after 600 Ma, the Buzios–Palmital basin changed to an active margin setting because the arc collided with the continental margin and the subduction shifted to the back arc environment. By 610 Ma, most of the Brasiliano belts registered collisional events related to multiple convergent blocks. The stress fields and paleocontinent shapes would have allowed the occurrence of extensional areas with not only sedimentary deposition but also ocean floor spreading. Its remnants are preserved in this Brazilian coastal region as an ancient suture, reworked intensively during the Mesozoic rifting events. The reconnaissance of Late Neoproterozoic basins in the Brasiliano–Pan-African belts is of major importance to partially unravel the final amalgamation events of SW Gondwana. Considering that the Buzios–Palmital basin rock units are mostly covered by the marginal Atlantic basins, it is possible that other evidence could be preserved in the coastal regions of SW-Africa and SE-South America.  相似文献
