Shoreline gypsiferous sediments of an inland lake in central Spain furnishes valuable insight into reconstructions of early sedimentary changes related to shore fly–microbial mat interactions in fossil gypsum precipitating saline lake systems. The association of adult and larval forms of Ephydra (Diptera) with microbial matgrounds overlying the lake margin results in the formation of gypsiferous meniscate back‐filled burrows that provide an analogue for recurring, extensively developed trace fossils that occur in Cenozoic, but not older, lacustrine gypsum rocks. In this setting, sediment burrowing by ephydridae hinders significant preservation of microbialites. The overwhelming rise of Diptera at the onset of the Cenozoic resulted in extensive feeding and dwelling activity and contributed to reshape the saline aquatic habitat where microbial mats thrived, thus leading to the formation of specific trace fossils that are illustrative of the existence of microbes in the paleoenvironment. 相似文献

Reported herein are the results of eight soil CO2 efflux surveys performed from 2006 to 2011 at Timanfaya Volcanic Field (TVF), Lanzarote Island with the aim of evaluating the long- and short-term temporal variations of the diffuse CO2 emission. Soil CO2 efflux values ranged from non-detectable up to 34.2 g m−2 d−1, with the highest values measured in September 2008. Conditional sequential Gaussian simulations (sGs) were applied to construct soil CO2 efflux distribution maps and to estimate the total CO2 output from the studied area at the TVF. Soil CO2 efflux maps showed a high spatial and temporal variability. Total CO2 emission rates ranged between 41 and 518 t d−1, February 2011 (winter) being the season when maximum diffuse CO2 emission rates were observed. To investigate the influence of external variables on the soil CO2 efflux, a geochemical station (LZT01) was installed at TVF to measure continuously the soil CO2 efflux between July 2010 and March 2012 Since external factors such as barometric pressure, rainfall, soil water content, soil and air temperatures, and wind speed influence strongly the observed soil CO2 effluxes, multiple regression analysis was applied to the time series recorded by the automatic geochemical station LZT01 to remove the contribution of these external factors. The influence of meteorological variables on soil CO2 efflux oscillations accounts for 13% of total variance, with barometric pressure, rainfall and/or soil water content having the most influence in the control of the soil CO2 efflux. These observations along with the results from the eight soil gas surveys performed at TVF indicate that the short and long-term trends in the diffuse CO2 degassing are mainly controlled by environmental factors. 相似文献

The efficiency of inorganic fertilizers as stimulating agents for the bioremediation of oil-polluted environments can be increased with the addition of selected biostimulating compounds. In this study, the efficacy of different biostimulation treatments in the remediation of diesel-polluted soil in purpose-built microcosms has been evaluated. The treatments involved combinations of inorganic fertilizer with (a) Ivey surfactant, (b) Biorem organic fertilizer and (c) ethanol. Microbial activity was evaluated by monitoring the growth of heterotrophic and degrading bacteria and their dehydrogenase activity and carbon dioxide production. Hydrocarbon degradation was monitored by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results showed that all treatments enhanced microbial activity in comparison with natural attenuation and also that the combined treatments generally enhanced hydrocarbon biodegradation in comparison to both natural attenuation and the single inorganic fertilizer treatment. The inorganic fertilizer plus Ivey? surfactant was the most efficient treatment in terms of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon and light and heavy n-alkanes, showing an index of degradation of 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. Furthermore, biodegradation of heavy and branched n-alkanes was higher in microcosms treated with inorganic fertilizer plus ethanol (Index of degradation values of 1.6 and 1.5, respectively) indicating that combined treatments can be very effective in restoration of contaminated soil. 相似文献

The interplay of the geochemistry of the lower stretch of the Luján River is analyzed with its natural geomorphology (basin
features), local hydrometeorology (tidal regime and “sudestada” events) and the impact of polluted tributaries. Major ions,
dissolved heavy metals and limnological variables were analyzed using multivariate techniques. The water quality of the mainstream
of the Luján River, flowing through urbanized and industrialized areas is strongly and positively influenced by the input
of the Paraná River through deltaic watercourses and is negatively impacted after receiving the discharge from polluted watercourses.
The longitudinal spatial variations evidenced major discontinuities in the Lower Luján Basin, showing clearly the riverine
and the deltaic water influenced zones. Seasonal variations were also marked and were either temperature driven or associated

The biogeochemical cycling and isotopic fractionation of calcium during the initial stages of weathering were investigated in an alpine soil chronosequence (Damma glacier, Switzerland). This site has a homogeneous silicate lithology and minimal biological impacts due to sparse vegetation cover. Calcium isotopic compositions, obtained by TIMS using a 43Ca-46Ca double spike, were measured in the main Ca pools. During this very early stage of weathering, the young soils which have formed (δ44/42Ca=+0.44‰) were indistinguishable to the rocks from which they were derived (δ44/42Ca=+0.44‰) and stream water (δ44/42Ca=+0.48‰) was also within error of the average rock. This lack of variation indicates that the dissolution of the bulk silicate rock does not strongly fractionate Ca isotopes. The only Ca pool which was strongly fractionated from bulk rock was vegetation, which exhibited an enrichment of light Ca isotopes. Significant Ca isotope fractionation between bulk rock and the dissolved flux of Ca is likely to only occur where the Ca biogeochemical cycle is dominated by secondary processes such as biological cycling, adsorption and secondary mineral precipitation. 相似文献

Geothermal field Los Humeros, Mexico, is characterized by a high steam fraction in the well fluids, by extremely high B concentrations in separated water (grams per liter, with a magmatic B signature, δ11B ± 2σ = −0.8 ± 1.6‰), by the absence of correlation between B and Cl concentrations and by positive correlation between B content in separated water and fluid enthalpy. Such behavior is consistent with the existence of moderately acid brine (pH 3–5) at depth with a high B concentration (500–600 mg/kg). In this case a 3-level model can be suggested for Los Humeros: (1) immature, moderately acid brine at depth which is boiling at a temperature ∼350 °C producing the HCl-bearing vapor with a high B content; (2) partial condensation of this vapor at the upper level accompanying water–rock interaction and neutralization; (3) formation of a shallow water-dominated aquifer above a lithologic low-permeability boundary as has been proposed by other authors. A thermochemical computer code has been used to model boiling of an aqueous fluid at 350 °C with 0.1 M of NaCl, 0.05 M of H3BO3 and variable amount of HCl (0.001–0.1 M), then a partial condensation of the produced vapor at 250 °C and then separation of the steam–water mixture at 150 °C. Results of simulation are in a qualitative agreement with the observed data. 相似文献

This study explores the importance of bioenergy to potential future energy transformation and climate change management. Using a large inter-model comparison of 15 models, we comprehensively characterize and analyze future dependence on, and the value of, bioenergy in achieving potential long-run climate objectives. Model scenarios project, by 2050, bioenergy growth of 1 to 10 % per annum reaching 1 to 35 % of global primary energy, and by 2100, bioenergy becoming 10 to 50 % of global primary energy. Non-OECD regions are projected to be the dominant suppliers of biomass, as well as consumers, with up to 35 % of regional electricity from biopower by 2050, and up to 70 % of regional liquid fuels from biofuels by 2050. Bioenergy is found to be valuable to many models with significant implications for mitigation and macroeconomic costs of climate policies. The availability of bioenergy, in particular biomass with carbon dioxide capture and storage (BECCS), notably affects the cost-effective global emissions trajectory for climate management by accommodating prolonged near-term use of fossil fuels, but with potential implications for climate outcomes. Finally, we find that models cost-effectively trade-off land carbon and nitrous oxide emissions for the long-run climate change management benefits of bioenergy. The results suggest opportunities, but also imply challenges. Overall, further evaluation of the viability of large-scale global bioenergy is merited. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This investigation proposes the use of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate potential sites for stream monitoring and broadcast of flood warnings. The methodology adopts variables established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for the selection of stream-monitoring sites and incorporates new variables associated with the stream morphometry and hydraulics. The proposed approach quantifies subjective valuations through pairwise comparisons of judgements within the selection criteria. The uncertainty of expert judgement was assessed via Monte Carlo simulations and its effects on the resulting priority vector were analysed. This approach was applied on three main mountain watershed streams at which 11 alternative stream-gauging sites were evaluated and scored. According to our findings, six variables explain 0.711 of the total weight in the priority vector for the evaluation of a candidate site. Our approach is suitable for selecting the most stable alternative location based on a multi-criteria analysis in an inter-comparison arrangement. 相似文献
