Sediment accumulation rates were determined at several sites throughout Nauset Marsh (Massachusetts, U.S.A.), a back-barrier lagoonal system, using feldspar marker horizons to evaluate short-term rates (1 to 2 year scales) and radiometric techniques to estimate rates over longer time scales (137Cs,210Pb,14C). The barrier spit fronting theSpartina-dominated study site has a complex geomorphic history of inlet migration and overwash events. This study evaluates sediment accumulation rates in relation to inlet migration, storm events and sea-level rise. The marker horizon technique displayed strong temporal and spatial variability in response to storm events and proximity to the inlet. Sediment accumulation rates of up to 24 mm year−1were recorded in the immediate vicinity of the inlet during a period that included several major coastal storms, while feldspar sites remote from the inlet had substantially lower rates (trace accumulation to 2·2 mm year−1). During storm-free periods, accumulation rates did not exceed 6·7 mm year−1, but remained quite variable among sites. Based on137Cs (3·8 to 4·5 mm year−1) and210Pb (2·6 to 4·2 mm year−1) radiometric techniques, integrating sediment accumulation over decadal time scales, the marsh appeared to be keeping pace with the relative rate of sea-level rise from 1921 to 1993 of 2·4 mm year−1. At one site, the210Pb-based sedimentation rate and rate of relative sea-level rise were nearly similar and peat rhizome analysis revealed thatDistichlis spicatarecently replaced this onceS. patenssite, suggesting that this portion of Nauset Marsh may be getting wetter, thus representing an initial response to wetland submergence. Horizon markers are useful in evaluating the role of short-term events, such as storms or inlet migration, influencing marsh sedimentation processes. However, sampling methods that integrate marsh sedimentation over decadal time scales are preferable when evaluating a systems response to sea-level rise.  相似文献

Twenty-two sediment cores raised from the central and eastern parts of the Barents Sea have been studied to reconstruct the evolution of the facies system since the Late Weichselian glaciation. Multiproxy records reveal four lithostratigraphic units, which reflect major development stages of paleoenvironments. Age control is provided by 23 AMS 14C dates for Holocene sections of four cores. Continental moraine deposits of the last glaciation are overlain by proximal glaciomarine facies of the initial deglaciation phase. During this phase, the Barents Sea ice sheet detached from the ground resulting in seawater penetration into troughs, iceberg calving, deposition of IRD and fine-grained glacier meltwater load in newly formed marine basins. The main deglaciation phase is characterized by pulsed sedimentation from various gravity flows resulting in accumulation of distal glaciomarine facies comprising laminated clay and sand sequences with minor IRD. Redistribution of fine-grained suspended matter by bottom currents and brine-induced nepheloid flows combined with biogenic processes and minor ice rafting caused facies diversity of the Holocene marine sediments. The Holocene facies of shelf depressions reflect rather high, but variable productivity responding to climate changes and variations of Atlantic water inflow into the Barents Sea.  相似文献

The habitats utilized by small juvenile (<40 mm carapace length, CL) lobsters (Homarus americanus) are poorly known. We discovered and studied an undescribed juvenile lobster habitat in Nauset Marsh, Cape Cod. Juvenile lobsters (X=26.7 mm carapace length, 6 to 72 mm, n=38) were collected from suction samples primarily 0144 01 in “peat reef” habitats during the period from August 1985 through October 1986. The reefs consisted of large blocks ofSpartina alterniflora peat that had separated from the marsh surface and fallen into adjacent subtidal marsh channels. The smallest lobsters (6 to 7 mm CL) were collected from peat reefs in October 1985, and April and July 1986. In these habitats, juvenile lobster density averaged 2.5 individuals m?2 (range 0–5.7) in suction samples. Peat reef habitats occur in other salt marshes in the northeastern United States and may be an important nursery habitat for small juvenile lobsters.  相似文献

Since 2006 different remote monitoring methods for determining mixing-layer height have been operated in parallel in Augsburg (Germany). One method is based on the operation of eye-safe commercial mini-lidar systems (ceilometers). The optical backscatter intensities recorded with ceilometers provide information about the range-dependent aerosol concentration; gradient minima within this profile mark the tops of mixed layers. Special software for these ceilometers provides routine retrievals of lower atmospheric layering. A second method, based on sodar observations, detects the height of a turbulent layer characterized by high acoustic backscatter intensities due to thermal fluctuations and a high variance of the vertical velocity component. This information is extended by measurements with a radio-acoustic sounding system (RASS) that directly provides the vertical temperature profile from the detection of acoustic signal propagation and thus temperature inversions that mark atmospheric layers. Ceilometer backscatter information is evaluated by comparison with parallel measurements. Data are presented from 2 years of combined ceilometer and RASS measurements at the same site and from comparison with a nearby (60 km) radiosonde for larger-scale humidity information. This evaluation is designed to ensure mixing-layer height monitoring from ceilometer data more reliable.  相似文献

Gas samples were collected from high-temperature, rooted summit vents at Mount St. Augustine in 1979, 1982, and 1984. All of the gas samples exhibit various degrees of disequilibrium. Thermodynamic restoration of the analyzed gases permits partial or complete removal of these disequilibrium effects and allows inference of equilibrium gas compositions. Long-term (1979–1984) degassing trends within resampled or adjacent vents are characterized by increases (from 97.4 to 99.8 mole%) in the H2O fraction and major decreases in the residual gases. Over this same period total gas HCl contents decreased by a factor of 3 to 10 while dry gas (H2O-free recalculated) HCl contents increased by a factor of 1.6 to 3. Dry gas mole proportions at these sites changed from being CO2-dominated (46% CO2, 24% H2 in 1979) to H2-dominated (49% H2, 22% CO2 in 1984). The overall trends in gas chemistry and the stable isotope patterns in gases and condensates from the summit fumaroles can be explained by progressive magmatic outgassing coupled with increasing proportions of seawater in the fumarole emissions.Studies of the gaseous emissions following the 1976 and 1986 Mount St. Augustine eruptions confirmed the Cl- and S-rich nature of the Mount St. Augustine emanations. Seawater, possibly derived from magmatic assimilation or dehydration of near-surface seawater-bearing sediments, could supply a portion of the outgassed Cl and S. Continued seawater influx through subvolcanic fractures or permeable sediments would recharge the seawater-depleted zone and provide a near-surface Cl and S source for the next eruptive cycle,Various lines of evidence support a phreatomagmatic component in the 1976 and 1986 Mount St. Augustine eruptions. We suggest that seawater may interact with magma or volcanic gases during the early explosive phase of Mount St. Augustine eruptions and that it continues to influence high-temperature fumarole emissions as the volcanic system cools.  相似文献

We address the problem of assessing the statistical significance of candidate periodicities found using the so-called 'multiharmonic' periodogram, which is being used for detection of non-sinusoidal signals and is based on the least-squares fitting of truncated Fourier series. The recent author's investigation made for the Lomb–Scargle periodogram is extended to the more general multiharmonic periodogram. As a result, closed and efficient analytic approximations to the false alarm probability, associated with multiharmonic periodogram peaks, are obtained. The resulting analytic approximations are tested under various conditions using Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations showed a nice precision and robustness of these approximations.  相似文献

We describe the calibration, measurements and data reduction, ofthe dark current of the ISOCAM/LW detector. We point-out theexistence of two significant drifts of the LW dark-current, onethroughout the ISO mission, on a timescale of days, another within each single revolution, on a timescale of hours. We alsoshow the existence of a dependence of the dark current on thetemperature of the ISOCAM detector.By characterizing all these effects through polynomial fittings,we build a model for the LW calibration dark, that depends onthe epoch of observation (parametrized with the revolutionnumber and the time elapsed in that given revolution since theactivation) and on the temperature of the ISOCAM detector. Themodel parameters are tuned for each of ISOCAM/LW pixel.We show that the modelling is very effective in taking intoaccount the dark-current variations and allows a much cleanerdark subtraction than using a brute average of severalcalibration dark images.The residuals of the LW model-dark subtraction are, on average,similar to the pre-launch expectation.  相似文献

Many salt marshes throughout southern New England are exhibiting a trend toward submergence, as reported in this volume and other published literature. This paper provides a brief perspective on sea-level rise and the many other interacting factors that contribute to marsh submergence in this and other regions. Curtailing nutrient loading and removing or altering barriers (e.g., dams, dikes) to the delivery of suspended sediment to marshes are discussed as management or restoration techniques to consider for increasing long-term sustainability of marshes. Adaptation measures are many (e.g., thin-layer sediment application to marsh surface, facilitation of landward marsh migration, shoreline stabilization), but all require study to evaluate their potential for enhancing resilience. Research, monitoring, and dynamic modeling, coupled with appropriate management and adaptation approaches implemented at local and regional scales, will contribute to the challenge of sustaining salt marshes in an uncertain future of sea-level rise, other climate factors, and stressors associated with a developing coastal zone.  相似文献

Sustainable water management is one of humanity’s most important challenges—today and in the future. Germany does not face a significant water shortage problem, but it has three main challenges: protection of water quality, ensuring public water supply and public wastewater disposal, and protecting the public and infrastructure from floods. Capacity development is a key issue to overcome the challenges of water resources in any country including Germany. Engineers, technicians, and mechanics need to upgrade their knowledge on a regular basis to deal with the complex management and rapid technological developments. In order to create efficient training schemes, the Vocational Training Working Group of Global Water Partnership (GWP), part of the GWP Capacity Development Task Force, has worked on the definition of fundamental job profiles for the Water and Sanitation Sector (WASS). To cover all technical functions of the industrial water cycle, it was necessary to identify around thirty occupations. Then, a competence-based training approach was adopted. Additionally, an assessment approach was also developed based on comparing the level of competence of the workers to a standard level of competence for each job. The RWTH Aachen University with its partners have developed another game-based approach (SeCom2.0) based on serious gaming technology to enable water professionals dealing with flood risk management to be trained on different flood situations in a virtual environment. SeCom2.0 has three main components that are connected by a database layer. In addition to the serious games component, there is a collaboration component and a learning management system. For nearly 100 members from the flood competence centre (HochwasserKompetenzCentrum) in Cologne, Germany gave input to simulate the real flooding scenarios, and the learners will have to deal with a flood scenario by protecting the city in a given time and using a given resources and tools. This work concluded that both competence-based and game-based approaches could be significantly improved by blending both approaches. This will improve the process of training; for example, the competence-based approach can be enriched by using game-based simulation by introducing the trainees to a simulation of different technologies in water utilities. This can save resources and money and enrich the training. More importantly is modifying the game-based approach using the approach of competence-based to focus on specific competencies and to make use of the competence standards in its assessment component. The first section of this introduces and categorizes water challenges in Germany. In the second and third section, the two approaches are introduced in details. The competence-based approach is introduced to the WASS while the games-based to the flood risk management. Finally, a conclusion and recommendations are illustrated.  相似文献
