Health geography in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) has had a major impact on international sub‐disciplinary debates. It is timely to celebrate our domestic health geography achievements and alert ourselves to the challenges ahead. This reflection article provides a brief overview of Aotearoa NZ's maturing health geography community and includes the reflections of a panel discussion held during the bi‐annual NZ Geographical Society conference in 2016. We argue that the eclectism of health geography in NZ and beyond is both the sub‐discipline's major strength and challenge.  相似文献

Regional mapping of Middle Albian, shallow‐marine clastic strata over ca 100 000 km2 of the Western Canada Foreland Basin was undertaken to investigate the relationship between large‐scale stratal architecture and lithology. Results suggest that, over ca 5 Myr, stratal geometry and facies were dynamically linked to tectonic activity in the adjacent Cordillera. Higher frequency modulation of accommodation is most reasonably ascribed to eustasy. The Harmon and Cadotte alloformations were deposited at the southern end of an embayment of the Arctic Ocean. The Harmon alloformation, forming the lower part of the succession, constitutes a wedge of marine mudstone that thickens westward over 400 km from <5 m near the forebulge to >150 m in the foredeep. Constituent allomembers are also wedge‐shaped but lack distinct clinothems, a rollover point or downlapping geometry. Ubiquitous wave ripples indicate that the sea floor lay above storm wave base. Deposition took place on an extremely low‐gradient ramp, where accommodation was limited by effective wave base. Lobate, river‐dominated deltas fringed the southern margin of the basin. The largest deltas are stacked in the same area, suggesting protracted stability of the feeder river. A buried palaeo‐valley on the underlying sub‐Cretaceous unconformity may have influenced compaction and controlled river location for ca 3 Myr. Adjacent to the western Cordillera, a predominantly mudstone succession is interbedded with abundant storm beds of very fine‐grained sandstone and siltstone that reflect supply from the adjacent orogen. Bioturbation indices in the Harmon alloformation range from zero to six which reflects the influence of stressors related to river‐mouth proximity. Harmon alloformation mudstone grades abruptly upward into marine sandstone and conglomerate of the overlying Cadotte alloformation. The Cadotte is composed of three allomembers ‘CA’ to ‘CC’, that represent the deposits of prograding strandplains 200 × 300 km in extent. Allomembers ‘CA’ and ‘CB’ are strongly sandstone‐dominated, whereas allomember ‘CC’ contains abundant conglomerate in the west. The dominantly aggradational wedge of Harmon alloformation mudstone records flexural subsidence driven by active thickening in the adjacent orogen: the high accommodation rate trapped coarser clastic detritus close to the basin margin. In contrast, the tabular, highly progradational sandstone and conglomerate bodies of the Cadotte alloformation record a low subsidence rate, implying tectonic quiescence in the adjacent orogen. Erosional unloading of the orogen through Cadotte time steepened rivers to the extent that they delivered gravel to the shore. These observations support an ‘anti‐tectonic’ model of gravel supply proposed previously for the United States portion of the Cretaceous foreland basin. Because Cadotte allomembers do not thicken appreciably into the foredeep, accommodation changes that controlled these transgressive–regressive successions were probably of eustatic origin.  相似文献

This paper describes the formation, migration and sedimentology of sandwaves along the distal end of Long Point, a 40 km long spit in Lake Erie. Some seven to nine sandwaves occur in a zone over the last 14 km of the spit. They are characteristically 50–100 m wide at the downdrift end, range in length from 350 m to > 1500 m and migrate alongshore at rates that are typically 100–300 m year−1. Measurements over a 7-year period show two forms of alongshore sandwave migration: (1) a migratory jump; and (2) downdrift accretion. The migratory jump is commonly 200–500 m year−1 and results from the onshore migration and welding of an inner nearshore bar to the downdrift end of the sandwave. This in turn leads to emergence of the bar over a distance of several hundred metres downdrift of the sandwave and isolation of the trough landward of the bar. Infilling of the trough abstracts large volumes of sediment from the local sediment transport system and may affect movement of the sandwave in the following year or movement of the next sandwave downdrift. Downdrift accretion commonly results in migration of 50–150 m year−1 and results from the refraction of waves around the distal end of the sandwave and episodic accretion of small swash bars. This mechanism occurs less frequently and appears to reflect a local condition of lower sediment abundance, often triggered by a large migratory jump in the previous year. The process of bar emergence and infilling produces a distinct suite of sedimentary structures associated with the infilling of the landward trough and building of the sandwave berm. The initial shoreline perturbation that generates the sandwave results from onshore migration and welding of inner nearshore bars, and the development and growth of the sandwaves is promoted by refraction of highly oblique waves.  相似文献

There is growing recognition in the human dimensions research community that climate change impact studies must take into account the effects of other ongoing global changes. Yet there has been no systematic methodology to study climate change vulnerability in the context of multiple stressors. Using the example of Indian agriculture, this paper presents a methodology for investigating regional vulnerability to climate change in combination with other global stressors. This method, which relies on both vulnerability mapping and local-level case studies, may be used to assess differential vulnerability for any particular sector within a nation or region, and it can serve as a basis for targeting policy interventions.  相似文献

In this paper, the “Expérience sur Site pour COntraindre les Modèles de Pollution atmosphérique et de Transport d'Emissions” (ESCOMPTE) program is presented. The ESCOMPTE program is used to produce a relevant set of data for testing and evaluating regional pollution models. It includes high-resolution (in space and time) atmospheric emission inventories and field experiments, and covers an area of 120×120 km, centered over the Marseilles-Berre area in the southeast of France during Summer 2001. This region presents a high occurrence of photochemical pollution events, which result from numerous industrial and urban sources of primary pollutants. From the dynamical characteristics of the area, sea-breeze circulation and channeling effects due to terrain features highly influence the location of the pollutant plumes. ESCOMPTE will provide a highly documented framework for dynamics and chemistry studies.Campaign strategies and experimental set up are described. During the planning phase, existing modeling results helped defining the experimental design. The campaign involved surface measurement networks, remote sensing, ship-borne, balloon-borne, and airplane measurements. Mean standard meteorological parameters and turbulent fluxes, ozone, ozone precursors, photochemically active trace gases, and aerosols were measured. Five intensive observation periods (IOPs) were documented using a wide spectrum of instruments, involving aircraft (7) (one of them equipped with a Doppler lidar, the others for in situ meteorological and chemical measurements), constant volume balloons (33), ozone lidars (5), wind profilers (15 sodars and radars), Doppler scanning lidar (1), radiosonde systems (at 4 locations), instrumented ships (2). In addition to the air quality networks from environmental agencies, 15 supplementary ground stations equipped for chemistry and/or meteorology and/or surface flux measurements, were operational. All instruments were calibrated and compared during a Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) week, at the very beginning of the campaign.Fifteen days were intensively documented during five IOPs, referenced as 1, 2a, 2b, 3, and 4. High pollution levels were encountered during sea-breeze conditions observed during IOPs 2b and 3, whereas IOPs 2a and 4 corresponded to moderate wind, and channeled plume regimes. In addition, hourly emissions inventories for all IOPs were established to complete data sets and to finalize the ESCOMPTE database (EDB).Two other projects were associated to ESCOMPTE: urban boundary layer (UBL) and tropospheric water vapor content by GPS tomography (GPS/H2O). They took advantage of the scientific environment provided by ESCOMPTE.  相似文献

The transition between the terminal cones and the ancestral edifices of Nevado de Colima and Fuego de Colima volcanoes is marked by the deposits of gigantic volcanic debris avalanches of the Mount St. Helens (MSH) or Bezymianny type. Unusual mafic juvenile fragments and cauliflower bombs as well as juvenile fragments of mixed and more evolved composition are abundant in dune-bedded pyroclastic-surge deposits directly associated with these catastrophic events at both volcanoes. At Nevado, these mafic juvenile fragments represent the most primitive magma ever erupted by the volcano (SiO252.50%). The lavas directly preceding and following the debris-avalanche event are silicic andesites (SiO259%). At Fuego these juvenile fregments have 56% SiO2. The lavas from the upper parts of the caldera wall are dacites (65% SiO2), whereas the terminal cone is composed of andesites (57% to 62% SiO2). At Nevado, petrologic evidence for interaction of mafic magma with andesitic or dacitic magma in a high-level magma chamber, just before the eruption of pyroclastic surge deposits, consists of: (1) banded juvenile bombs of intermediate composition; (2) the range of composition of these bombs from SiO252% to 58%; (3) the presence of highly magnesian olivine with reaction rims; (4) inverse zoning in clinopyroxene with strong Mg enrichment towards the rim; (5) resorption of plagioclase; and (6) significant compositional heterogeneity in the vitric phase. Volcanic debris-avalanche events at Nevado and Fuego de Colima may thus correspond with major breaks in the petrological evolution of the volcanoes and the start of a new magmatic cycle. Injection of mafic magma into the presently perched viscous surface dome of the active Fuego cone, as occurred in 1818 and 1913, could enhance the likelihood of southward collapse of the flank of an already unstable edifice, and it must be considered in future hazard assessment of this active volcano. Risk to life and property for the entire Colima region associated with such catastrophic phenomena would be immeasurably greater in comparison with hazards related to the last explosive outburst in 1913, which resulted in emplacement of pyroclastic flows over uninhabited areas of the upper flanks of the volcano.  相似文献

Fisheries development programmes should explicitly build capacity of local and regional consultants. These consultants should be integral components of strategies to make efficient use of expertise. Their importance as a source of expertise will increase as small fisheries departments reorient towards people-based approaches to management. They are presently undervalued and underdeveloped for several reasons, such as donor country preferences for using their own nationals and lack of support within their own countries and regions, often due to misconceptions regarding what is involved in being a self-employed consultant.  相似文献
