We present two-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection in a configuration relevant to two-ribbon solar flares. The calculations extend those of Forbes and Priest (1982a, b, 1983) and some puzzling aspects of their results are clarified. In particular, the roles of magnetic diffusion, of the tearing mode and of turbulence are individually examined. We stress the important part played by boundary conditions in determining the evolution of the initial current sheet and suggest that in future the evolution of the entire overlying magnetic arcade be modelled as well as the current sheet that is created below the rising arcade. Tearing at very high magnetic Reynolds numbers is likely to develop into an impulsive bursty regime of reconnection after a time which depends on the initial level of turbulence.  相似文献

Effects of waste water discharge from a major ocean outfall in Southern California to the benthic infaunal community were examined during a 5-year monitoring programme. Natural features, primarily water depth, accounted for 82% of the variability in the infaunal community, while discharge-related effects represented less than 8% of the variability. The area immediately adjacent to the diffuser had the strongest outfall effects. Infaunal abundance showed a pattern of enhancement centred at the outfall. Diversity was also high, indicating that the area was not characterized by a degraded community.  相似文献

We present the first near millennium-length, annually resolved stable isotope record from bristlecone pines (Pinus longaeva, D.K Bailey). The carbon isotope ratios from the cellulose of seven trees from the White Mountains of California, corrected for anthropogenic changes in atmospheric chemistry, are used to reconstruct growing season (June through August) precipitation back to AD 1085. Extremely negative isotope results are strongly correlated with proposed severest El Niño events over the last 500 yr, and similar values in the first half of the millennium are used to reconstruct a further 13 strong El Niño events, concentrated in the 12th Century and the mid 13th and 14th Centuries. Ring-width chronologies from adjacent sites in the White Mountains demonstrate a high degree of decadal covariance with the δ13C series, although there are several periods of notable divergence.  相似文献

During Late Palaeozoic time a wide ocean, known as Palaeotethys, separated the future Eurasian and African continents. This ocean closed in Europe in the west during the Variscan orogeny, whereas in Asia further east it remained open and evolved into the Mesozoic Tethys, only finally closing during Late Cretaceous–Early Cenozoic.Three Upper Palaeozoic lithological assemblages, the Chios Melange (on the Aegean Greek island), the Karaburun Melange (westernmost Aegean Turkey) and the Teke Dere Unit (Lycian Nappes, SW Turkey) provide critical information concerning sedimentary and tectonic processes during closure of Palaeotethys. The Chios and Karaburun melanges in the west are mainly terrigenous turbidites with blocks and dismembered sheets of Silurian–Upper Carboniferous platform carbonate rocks (shallow-water and slope facies) and poorly dated volcanic rocks. The Teke Dere Unit to the southeast begins with alkaline, within-plate-type volcanics, depositionally overlain by Upper Carboniferous shallow-water carbonates. This intact succession is overlain by a tectonic slice complex comprising sandstone turbidites that are intersliced with shallow-water, slope and deep-sea sediments (locally dated as Early Carboniferous). Sandstone petrography and published detrital mineral dating imply derivation from units affected by the Panafrican (Cadomian) and Variscan orogenies.All three units are interpreted as parts of subduction complexes in which pervasive shear zones separate component parts. Silurian–Lower Carboniferous black cherts (lydites) and slope carbonates accreted in a subduction trench where sandstone turbidites accumulated. Some blocks retain primary depositional contacts, showing that gravitational processes contributed to formation of the melange. Detached blocks of Upper Palaeozoic shallow-water carbonates (e.g. Chios) are commonly mantled by conglomerates, which include water-worn clasts of black chert. The carbonate blocks are restored as one, or several, carbonate platforms that collided with an active margin, fragmenting into elongate blocks that slid into a subduction trench. This material was tectonically accreted at shallow levels within a subduction complex, resulting in layer-parallel extension, shearing and slicing. The accretion mainly took place during Late Carboniferous time.Alternative sedimentary-tectonic models are considered in which the timing and extent of closure of Palaeotethys differ, and in which subduction was either northwards towards Eurasia, or southwards towards Gondwana (or both). Terrane displacement is also an option. A similar (but metamorphosed) accretionary unit, the Konya Complex, occurs hundreds of kilometres further east. All of these units appear to have been assembled along the northern margin of Gondwana by Permian time, followed by deposition of overlying Tauride-type carbonate platforms. Northward subduction of Palaeotethys beneath Eurasia is commonly proposed. However, the accretionary units studied here are more easily explained by southward subduction towards Gondwana. Palaeotethys was possibly consumed by long-lived (Late Palaeozoic) northward subduction beneath Eurasia, coupled with more short-lived (Late Carboniferous) southward subduction near Gondwana, during or soon after closure of Palaeotethys in the Balkan region to the west.  相似文献

Seven piston cores, 7–16 m long, taken between the Kuril Islands and Emperor Seamounts, have been dated using radiolarian and diatom extinction levels and correlated using volcanic ash layers. The average rate of deposition in the cores decreases from 6 cm/1000 years near the Kuril Trench to about 3.5 cm/1000 years near the seamounts. Dispersed volcanic ash is the main constituent of the cores and it comprises up to 80% of the sediments. The percentage of the ash in the sediments decreases eastward from the Kuril Islands as the rates of deposition decrease.The total thickness of the sediments in the same latitudinal belt also decreases eastward. The thickness of the sediment inferred from seismic data near the Kuril trench is about 600 m and rates of deposition are approximately 6 cm/1000 years in the Pleistocene cores. Sediment thickness near the seamounts is about 300 m, and rates of deposition are approximately 3 cm/1000 years in the Pleistocene cores. Extrapolated rates of deposition in these cores suggest that the age of the base of the sediment to the east of the Kurils is only about 10 m.y.The anomalously young age for the base of the sediments obtained by extrapolation of an assumed constant rate of deposition can be explained by Deep Sea Drilling Project data from the northwest Pacific. The sediment thickness at DSDP site 192 east of Kamchatka includes sediments from all the Cenozoic epochs except the Paleocene. Rates of deposition of sediment younger than Middle Miocene are an order of magnitude higher than those prior to this time. At DSDP sites east of Japan, either Late Miocene sediments lie directly on the basement, or sediments older than Late Miocene are very thin. Post-Middle Miocene sediments are composed primarily of glass shards. Thus, about 90% of the total thickness of sediments in the northwest Pacific is composed of sediments younger than Middle Miocene with volcanic ash as the main constituent. The volcanic ash results from the present phase of explosive volcanic activity which began in the Late Miocene in the northwest Pacific volcanic arcs.  相似文献

We utilize a variety of climate datasets to examine impacts of two mechanisms on precipitation in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) during northern-hemisphere summer. First, surface-pressure gradients draw moist air toward the GHA from the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Congo Basin. Variability of the strength of these gradients strongly influences GHA precipitation totals and accounts for important phenomena such as the 1960s–1980s rainfall decline and devastating 1984 drought. Following the 1980s, precipitation variability became increasingly influenced by the southern tropical Indian Ocean (STIO) region. Within this region, increases in sea-surface temperature, evaporation, and precipitation are linked with increased exports of dry mid-tropospheric air from the STIO region toward the GHA. Convergence of dry air above the GHA reduces local convection and precipitation. It also produces a clockwise circulation response near the ground that reduces moisture transports from the Congo Basin. Because precipitation originating in the Congo Basin has a unique isotopic signature, records of moisture transports from the Congo Basin may be preserved in the isotopic composition of annual tree rings in the Ethiopian Highlands. A negative trend in tree-ring oxygen-18 during the past half century suggests a decline in the proportion of precipitation originating from the Congo Basin. This trend may not be part of a natural cycle that will soon rebound because climate models characterize Indian Ocean warming as a principal signature of greenhouse-gas induced climate change. We therefore expect surface warming in the STIO region to continue to negatively impact GHA precipitation during northern-hemisphere summer.  相似文献

On-site disposal of sewage in septic systems can lead to groundwater plumes with NO(3)(-)-N concentrations exceeding the common drinking water limit of 10 mg/L. Currently, denitrification is considered as the principal natural attenuation process. However, at a large seasonal-use septic system in Ontario (256 campsites), a suboxic zone exists where nitrogen removal of up to 80% occurs including removal of NH(4)(+)-N. This zone has both NO(3)(-)-N and NH(4)(+)-N at >5 mg/L each. In the distal NH(4)(+)-rich zone, NH(4)(+)-N concentrations (8.1 ± 8.0 mg/L) are lower than in the proximal zone (48 ± 36 mg/L) and NH(4)(+)-N is isotopically enriched (concentration-weighted mean δ(15)N of +15.7‰) compared to the proximal zone (+7.8‰). Furthermore, δ(15)N-NH(4)(+) isotopic enrichment increases with depth in the distal zone, which is opposite to what would result if nitrification along the water table zone was the mechanism causing NH(4)(+) depletion. Bacterial community composition was assessed with molecular (DNA-based) analysis and demonstrated that groundwater bacterial populations were predominantly composed of bacteria from two Candidatus genera of the Planctomycetales (Brocadia and Jettenia). Together, these data provide strong evidence that anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) plays an important role in nitrogen attenuation at this site.  相似文献
