Hopper dredging operations release suspended sediment into the environment by agitation of the bed and by discharge of overflow slurries. Monitoring of turbidity and suspended sediment concentrations in central Chesapeake Bay revealed two plumes: (1) an upper plume produced by overflow discharge and (2) a near-bottom plume produced by draghead agitation and rapid settling from the upper plume. The upper plume dispersed over 5.7 km2 extending 5,200 meters form the discharge point. Redeposited sediment accumulated on channel flanks covering an area of 6.4 km2 and reached a thickness of 19 cm. Altogether dredging redistributed into the environment an estimated 100,000 tons of sediment or 12 percent of the total material removed.Near-field concentrations of suspended sediment, less than 300 m from the dredge, reach 840 to 7,200 mg/L or 50 to 400 times the normal background level. Far-field concentrations (>300 m) are enriched 5 to 8 times background concentrations and persist 34 to 50 percent of the time during a dredging cycle (1.5 to 2.0 h). The overflow discharge plume evolves through three dispersion phases: (1) convective descent, (2) dynamic collapse, and (3) long-term passive diffusion (Clark and others 1971). The bulk of the material descends rapidly to the bottom during the convective descent phase, whereas the cloud that remains in suspension is dispersed partly by internal waves. Although suspended sediment concentrations in the water column exceed certain water quality standards, benthic communities survived the perturbation with little effect. 相似文献
This paper briefly reviews several large-scale modeling systems for nuclear power plant accidents in the United States, and
summarizes our recent modeling results for the effects of key meteorological conditions, radioactive release characteristics,
and evacuation strategies on radiation doses. This work was intended to be useful in the formulation of emergency plans for
nuclear power plant accidents. The sensitivity analyses establish a scale for comparing impacts at various locations and over
time depending on the variation of those key parameters, and have clear implications for emergency planning. 相似文献
The local subduction geometry at a site south of Puget Sound in western Washington is investigated using teleseismicP-waveforms recorded on a three-component event triggered seismograph. The data are processed using source equalization deconvolution in order to isolate locally convertedP-to-S arrivals and stacked to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Stable arrivals in the radial component indicate an oceanic Moho within the subducted slab at a depth of about 53 km beneath the station. Observed amplitude variations with azimuth in the radial data, as well as qualitative aspects of the tangential data, are used to establish a slab dip of 16° to the southeast. Our results are compatible with previous results from a site 60 km to the west, and further confirm a substantial warp in the regional geometry of the subducted Juan de Fuca plate. 相似文献
Bed roughness characteristics in coarse-grained channels are fairly complex. A hierarchy of roughness elements can be observed, ranging from variable particle sizes and shapes and small-scale sedimentary structures, to large-scale bedforms such as riffle-pool sequences. The effects of these scales of roughness on the flow geometry still remain to be thoroughly investigated. The semivariogram has been suggested in the past as a means of quantifying bed roughness effects on streamflow, as well as for distinguishing between scales of roughness. However, field measurements are rather time-consuming. The low number of bed profiles measured in the field precludes the identification of generally applicable relationships between the statistical properties derived from the semivariograms (such as the Hausdorff dimensions and the scale of autocorrelation corresponding to each fractal band) and the bed configuration itself (geometrical and sedimentological properties). Simulation results of gravel-bed profiles are, therefore, presented in order to complement the original investigation of Robert (1988a). The simulation experiments, based on grain characteristics of sizes and shapes and on morphological properties of small-scale bedforms, yield very significant information on boundary roughness at the microscale and give insight into the interpretation of empirical semivariograms (derived from field measurements). Bed-material sorting, variable grain shapes, and height and spacing of cluster bedforms control the fractal dimensions obtained from the semivariograms, as well as the location of the break of slope and the range of the process. 相似文献
We report two examples from the south of the French Alps, showing that radon emanation monitored by alpha-sensitive film may be used to locate certain discrete structural features revealed in data collected by remote sensing from a satellite. The variations observed in our data, over a period of several months, are in accordance with atmospheric changes and might correlate with local seismic activity when the detectors are located directly above structural fractures and the magnitude of the seismic event is greater than 2. 相似文献
UPb geochronology provides an absolute time framework for the evolution of the Sigma gold deposit and surrounding rocks at Val d'Or, southern Abitibi subprovince. The Bourlamaque batholith, the largest pluton in the area, gives a 2699.8 ± 1.0 Ma UPb zircon age. This pluton cuts the Val d'Or Formation which hosts the mineralization. A UPb zircon age of 2704.9 ± 1.1 Ma on a felsic volcanic rock, the Colombière “rhyolite”, 13 km east of the mine dates that formation. The gold-bearing quartz vein system at Sigma is hosted by andesites and two generations of porphyry intrusions, all metamorphosed to the greenschist facies. The oldest porphyry (“porphyritic diorite”) shows the same deformation as the volcanic rocks, and has a 2703.7 ± 2.5 Ma UPb zircon age. The porphyritic diorite and volcanic rocks are cut by feldspar-porphyry dykes which post-date regional folding and have a 2694.0 ± 2.2 Ma UPb zircon age.Regional greenschist metamorphism has been dated directly, with a UPb date of 2684 ± 7 Ma on rutile in the Colombière “rhyolite”. The mineralization and hydrothermal alteration in the mine are superimposed on the metamorphic minerals. Hydrothermal rutile, from an alteration halo around the veins in andesite, has a 2599 ± 9 Ma UPb age. Textural evidence clearly indicates that the wall-rock alteration and vein filling are contemporaneous, and hence the vein system and gold mineralization appear to have developed at least 80 m.y. after the formation and metamorphism of host greenstones. 相似文献
In the tropical rain forests of the Congo during the dry season, from June to September 1987, carboxylic acid partial pressures (Pgas) in the air above the canopy, at ground level, and at the boundary layer, were estimated from water samples such as fog and rainwater. The concentrations of these acids were also measured in the sap of tree leaves. Tree leaves act as a sink or as a source if the acid Pgas is greater of lower than the acid concentrations in molecular form in sap. For each of these soluble gases, there is a value of Pgas where the exchange is nul. This is called the compensation point. Values of the compensation point for some tree leaves were evaluated according to Henry's law. Henry's law coefficients at ppm levels were redetermined for formic (HCOOH), acetic (CH3COOH), propionic (CH3CH2COOH), and isobutyric (CH3CH(CH3)COOH) acids.By comparison of Pgas and compensation points, it is concluded that the forest was a potential source for these acids. The soil-or the litter-acts as a significant source of a carboxylic acid of C3 or C4 atoms in the aliphatic chain. This carboxylic acid, not yet fully characterized, could play an important role in the rain acidity in forested zones of the equatorial areas. The direct emission of these carboxylic acids by vegetation was the main source in the boundary layer above the forest. The average emissions were 3.1×109, 7.8×109, and 8.4×109 molecules cm-2 s-1 for HCOOH, CH3COOH, and CH3CH2COOH, respectively. The savanna is an exogenous source of HCOOH and CH3CH2COOH during moderately rainy days for 30% of the time. The ozonolysis of isoprene seems to be a small source of HCOOH. 相似文献
A hierarchy of interpreted eustatic cyclicity in siliciclastic sedimentary rocks has a pattern of superposed cycles with frequencies in the ranges of 9–10 m.y., 1–2 m.y., 0.1–0.2 m.y., and 0.01–0.02 m.y. (second- through fifth-order cyclicity, respectively). Stratigraphic units displaying this cyclicity include composite sequences, sequences, and parasequences. On the Exxon global cycle chart, fundamental third-order cycles (1–2 m.y. average duration) stack into related groups (second-order cycles: 9–10 m.y. duration). A much larger pattern (about 200 m.y.) is interpreted as tectonically controlled eustasy probably related to sea-floor spreading rates.
One and probably two higher orders of cyclicity (fourth-order: 0.1–0.2 m.y.; and fifth-order: 0.01–0.02 m.y.) are now observed in work with well logs, cores, and outcrops in areas of very rapid deposition. These frequencies are in the range of Milankovitch cycles, and may represent part of the Milankovitch hierarchy which has been widely interpreted for cyclical units in carbonate rocks.
High-frequency (fourth-order) sequences, which form at a 0.1–0.2 m.y. cyclicity, have all the stratal attributes of conventional sequences, including constituent parasequences and systems tracts, and play a dominant role controling reservoir, source, and sealing rock distribution. A consistent hierarchy of stratigraphy is observed. Parasequences (probable fifth-order cyclicity) stack into sets to form systems tracts in fourth-order sequences. Groups (sets) of fourth-order sequences are deposited between major third-order boundaries within third-order composite sequences. Sequences in these sets stack in prograding and backstepping patterns to form third-order lowstand, transgressive, and highstand sequence sets.
Third-order sequence boundaries are marked by greater basinward shifts in facies, by larger more widespread incised valleys, and by more extensive onlap than are fourth-order sequence boundaries. Third-order condensed sections commonly are widespread, faunally rich, and widely correlated biozone and mapping markers. Fourth-order sequence analysis helps to understand reservoir, source, and seal distribution at the play and prospect scale. An example from the Gulf of Mexico is discussed. 相似文献
